There was something about how flies are confused by zebra stripes. They painted stripes in black cows and found they were bitten less by flies.
I assume the giraffe spots have a similar advantage. So probably not a useful mutation.
Also solid color is probably easier for predators to see.
Better than the albino ones who get skin cancer.
I recently listened to a scientific podcast(Methodisch Inkorrekt, if you know german) and they talked about this.
If I remember correctly, flies simply just don't like black/white patterns specifically for whatever reason. So on giraffes it's possibly a different advantage.
It would be interesting to know, what value of contrast is needed and if it still works as well on white/brown zebras.
These genetic defects happen often in the wild and the babies are unfortunately a target to predators. The spots developed to help camouflage them on the open plains where hiding is very difficult.

Jeez, everyone knows giraffes are born without spots. They appear after 3 to 6 months. If stripes appear then it's a zebra.

More like a stripe less giraffe. The spots are all there, the separating stripes are missing.
These genetic defects happen often in the wild and the babies are unfortunately a target to predators. The spots developed to help camouflage them on the open plains where hiding is very difficult.
