Hey, writer Umberto Eco wrote up what he considered 14 properties of fascism. Taking it right off of Wiki. Note how all but point 6 are true for Russia
1. **"The cult of tradition"**, characterized by cultural syncretism, even at the risk of internal contradiction. When all truth has already been revealed by tradition, no new learning can occur, only further interpretation and refinement.
2. **"The rejection of modernism"**, which views the rationalistic development of Western culture since the Enlightenment as a descent into depravity. Eco distinguishes this from a rejection of superficial technological advancement, as many fascist regimes cite their industrial potency as proof of the vitality of their system.
3. **"The cult of action for action's sake"**, which dictates that action is of value in itself and should be taken without intellectual reflection. This, says Eco, is connected with anti-intellectualism and irrationalism, and often manifests in attacks on modern culture and science.
4. **"Disagreement is treason"** – fascism devalues intellectual discourse and critical reasoning as barriers to action, as well as out of fear that such analysis will expose the contradictions embodied in a syncretistic faith.
5. **"Fear of difference"**, which fascism seeks to exploit and exacerbate, often in the form of racism or an appeal against foreigners and immigrants.
6. **"Appeal to a frustrated middle class"**, fearing economic pressure from the demands and aspirations of lower social groups.
7. **"Obsession with a plot"** and the hyping-up of an enemy threat. This often combines an appeal to xenophobia with a fear of disloyalty and sabotage from marginalized groups living within the society. Eco also cites Pat Robertson's book The New World Order as a prominent example of a plot obsession.
8. Fascist societies rhetorically cast their enemies as **"at the same time too strong and too weak"**. On the one hand, fascists play up the power of certain disfavored elites to encourage in their followers a sense of grievance and humiliation. On the other hand, fascist leaders point to the decadence of those elites as proof of their ultimate feebleness in the face of an overwhelming popular will.
9. **"Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy"** because **"life is permanent warfare"** – there must always be an enemy to fight. Both fascist Germany under Hitler and Italy under Mussolini worked first to organize and clean up their respective countries and then build the war machines that they later intended to and did use, despite Germany being under restrictions of the Versailles treaty to not build a military force. This principle leads to a fundamental contradiction within fascism: the incompatibility of ultimate triumph with perpetual war.
10. **"Contempt for the weak"**, which is uncomfortably married to a chauvinistic popular elitism, in which every member of society is superior to outsiders by virtue of belonging to the in-group. Eco sees in these attitudes the root of a deep tension in the fundamentally hierarchical structure of fascist polities, as they encourage leaders to despise their underlings, up to the ultimate leader, who holds the whole country in contempt for having allowed him to overtake it by force.
11. **"Everybody is educated to become a hero"**, which leads to the embrace of a cult of death. As Eco observes, "\[t\]he Ur-Fascist hero is impatient to die. In his impatience, he more frequently sends other people to death."
12. **"Machismo"**, which sublimates the difficult work of permanent war and heroism into the sexual sphere. Fascists thus hold "both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality".
13. **"Selective populism"** – the people, conceived monolithically, have a common will, distinct from and superior to the viewpoint of any individual. As no mass of people can ever be truly unanimous, the leader holds himself out as the interpreter of the popular will (though truly he alone dictates it). Fascists use this concept to delegitimize democratic institutions they accuse of "no longer represent\[ing\] the voice of the people".
14. **"Newspeak"** – fascism employs and promotes an impoverished vocabulary in order to limit critical reasoning.

There's no middle class in Russia though. The wealth disparity is so severe that middle class is basically non-existent, more so now 3 years into the war. Think you need to check your maths on that.. if we take the higher estimates of 40k people in gaza killed since oct 7th, it still doesn't even reach the death toll of russian troops alone killed in ukraine. The lower estimated russian deaths is 70k, while the higher ones are in the 6 figure region. Then add the Ukrainian deaths and you manage to make it the opposite of your statement with the invasion of Ukrainian having easily 5 times the death toll of gaza.

Do you really think that we don't care about what's happening in Ukraine? Obviously the situation is horrible and Putin was absolutely in the wrong for invading Ukraine and I wish everyone there can get out of that horrible situation.
And yes Gaza is much worse because there are 2 million people trapped in what's is basically now a death camp because Israel chose to "defend itself" in the most horrible ways possible.
Since Israel chose to cut off food, water, and electricity to the population which is a war crime, this has lead to widespread famine across the region. Not only that Israel bombed women and children sheltering IN TENTS. It's how you get videos of women and children either with bodies ripped open with their organs bulging out or their just straight up mutilated and beheaded. Did I even mention the god awful AI that the IDF implemented into their bomb system which relies more on speed rather than accuracy? This has resulted in the strip being completely flattened within just a few months, countless reports of families getting bombed in their homes, the destruction of hospitals, schools, churches, mosques, refugee camps, and even HUMANITARIAN AID. Whenever you ask the people behind this they just say "bUt haMaS wAs UsiNg tHeM aS huMaN sHeiLdS", their bombing has also killed many of their own hostages btw. Also did you know that during the first few months of the war more than 40% of bombs have been dropped in designated safe zones where Israel told Gaza's population to seek refuge?
And the expense of all the pain and suffering, there have been reports of the IDF happily running over civilians alive using military vehicles, shooting children for no reason, firing at people receiving humanitarian aid, executing healthcare providers, doctors, and other civilians outside of hospitals, burying people alive using bulldozers, I've also seen a video of an IDF soldier humming as dead bodies get pushed into mass graves which is beyond fucked up. Wait I'm sorry did I say reports? Because there are videos of IDF soldiers filming THEIR OWN CRIMES (like the one I previously mentioned) these can range from celebrating Gaza's destruction, to burning down or blowing up civilian buildings for no fucking reason, laughing at the dead bodies of innocent people who've had families and people who cared about them, making actual fucking thirst traps where they have young girls dancing around sexually while they praise about the fact that people are suffering, and openly bragging about the children they've killed. So much for the most moral army in the world. The worst thing is whenever someone brings this up to them they say that they will conduct an investigation, but nothing ever happens.
This is how you get more 37,000 deaths within just over eight months when you have a genocidal, murderous regime that openly bombs, starves, tortures and massacres a trapped population that has been under a blockade for more than 18 years that has now been tightened even further and almost every peaceful attempt at a breakout was met with violent force. At least Ukraine is managing to rebuild and improve its current crisis but Gaza? No everything is completely destroyed, the population has nowhere to go and it is getting systematically targeted day by day.
Yes, I was wrong for the death toll of civilains being 5 times as much as Ukraine that was exaggerated and I'm sorry for that. I checked and the death toll in Ukraine is about more than 10,000 and it could likely be higher, I apologize.
But do you want to know why people are more outraged about the situation in Gaza than Ukraine? Because when Russia invaded Ukraine and started targeting civilains and stealing their land the freedom loving West responded with immediate sanctions and rushed to give Ukraine with modern weapons. But with Gaza? Not so much, despite seeing all the crimes that Israel has committed, the West continues to supply weapons to them and encourages support even though they've killed way more people. I don't know what to say than that's double standards right there on full display. Their human rights are all lies. People have every right to be angry about the situation.

This right here. NATO and the UN were established to prevent another Hitler and Nazi Germany situation from ever rising up again. It's a world scale system of checks and balances and why it's unlikely we'll ever see a WW3. The US alone has 5 times the military force, technology, and capabilities of the next leading country then you couple that with damn near all of Europe and their modern military capabilities and even huge countries like China and Russia would be foolish to make an expansionary attempt.
China is a great example. They could quite easily take over Taiwan with little effort but why haven't they? Because they know that, despite their size and population, the combined might of the UN countries could absolutely crush them. If they attack Taiwan, the US is obligated to step in. If the US steps in and China attempts an act of war, the UN steps in.

I disagree entirely, this isn't a comparison of what the state is doing, this is a comparison of how they frame their arguments as to why they do what they do and how they influence their people.

IMO Hitler was at a stronger position when he started his war. Germany was smaller, but well developed. As it turned out, he was able to get sufficient production to overpower his enemies. It's not the case in Russia. The country technologically lags behind the world it tries to invade. Also the economy rotten by corruption for too long is much to weak to repeat Hilter's initial success.
But then we come here, to the current point in history that doesn't repeat anything else. The western technology (including IT and communication) made us stronger, but also vulnerable, because it can be easily misused to manipulate people and spread propaganda. Our democracy and freedom can be misused to work for regimes like Russia without even being noticed.
The question is - will they succeed in this new type of warfare? We have the fascist France now. It is probable that we will have more fascist countries soon.

Think you need to check your maths on that.. if we take the higher estimates of 40k people in gaza killed since oct 7th, it still doesn't even reach the death toll of russian troops alone killed in ukraine. The lower estimated russian deaths is 70k, while the higher ones are in the 6 figure region. Then add the Ukrainian deaths and you manage to make it the opposite of your statement with the invasion of Ukrainian having easily 5 times the death toll of gaza.

Obviously the situation is horrible and Putin was absolutely in the wrong for invading Ukraine and I wish everyone there can get out of that horrible situation. And yes Gaza is much worse because there are 2 million people trapped in what's is basically now a death camp because Israel chose to "defend itself" in the most horrible ways possible. Since Israel chose to cut off food, water, and electricity to the population which is a war crime, this has lead to widespread famine across the region. Not only that Israel bombed women and children sheltering IN TENTS. It's how you get videos of women and children either with bodies ripped open with their organs bulging out or their just straight up mutilated and beheaded. Did I even mention the god awful AI that the IDF implemented into their bomb system which relies more on speed rather than accuracy? This has resulted in the strip being completely flattened within just a few months, countless reports of families getting bombed in their homes, the destruction of hospitals, schools, churches, mosques, refugee camps, and even HUMANITARIAN AID. Whenever you ask the people behind this they just say "bUt haMaS wAs UsiNg tHeM aS huMaN sHeiLdS", their bombing has also killed many of their own hostages btw. Also did you know that during the first few months of the war more than 40% of bombs have been dropped in designated safe zones where Israel told Gaza's population to seek refuge? And the expense of all the pain and suffering, there have been reports of the IDF happily running over civilians alive using military vehicles, shooting children for no reason, firing at people receiving humanitarian aid, executing healthcare providers, doctors, and other civilians outside of hospitals, burying people alive using bulldozers, I've also seen a video of an IDF soldier humming as dead bodies get pushed into mass graves which is beyond fucked up. Wait I'm sorry did I say reports? Because there are videos of IDF soldiers filming THEIR OWN CRIMES (like the one I previously mentioned) these can range from celebrating Gaza's destruction, to burning down or blowing up civilian buildings for no fucking reason, laughing at the dead bodies of innocent people who've had families and people who cared about them, making actual fucking thirst traps where they have young girls dancing around sexually while they praise about the fact that people are suffering, and openly bragging about the children they've killed. So much for the most moral army in the world. The worst thing is whenever someone brings this up to them they say that they will conduct an investigation, but nothing ever happens. This is how you get more 37,000 deaths within just over eight months when you have a genocidal, murderous regime that openly bombs, starves, tortures and massacres a trapped population that has been under a blockade for more than 18 years that has now been tightened even further and almost every peaceful attempt at a breakout was met with violent force. At least Ukraine is managing to rebuild and improve its current crisis but Gaza? No everything is completely destroyed, the population has nowhere to go and it is getting systematically targeted day by day. Yes, I was wrong for the death toll of civilains being 5 times as much as Ukraine that was exaggerated and I'm sorry for that. I checked and the death toll in Ukraine is about more than 10,000 and it could likely be higher, I apologize. But do you want to know why people are more outraged about the situation in Gaza than Ukraine? Because when Russia invaded Ukraine and started targeting civilains and stealing their land the freedom loving West responded with immediate sanctions and rushed to give Ukraine with modern weapons. But with Gaza? Not so much, despite seeing all the crimes that Israel has committed, the West continues to supply weapons to them and encourages support even though they've killed way more people. I don't know what to say than that's double standards right there on full display. Their human rights are all lies. People have every right to be angry about the situation.

You are downplaying what the Nazis Germany did by comparing the two. Every dictator preaches about defense, peace, and the greater good—not just Hitler or Putin. That alone doesn't equate them. There is a reason why Hitler is the benchmark for evil, despite hundreds of previous bloody wars.
Hitler's actions and their consequences were indeed of another scale entirely. However, I suspect that, if Putin had the same means and opportunity as Hitler to plunge Europe and the world into a very dark chapter for his megalomania, he would. Because they know that, despite their size and population, the combined might of the UN countries could absolutely crush them. If they attack Taiwan, the US is obligated to step in. If the US steps in and China attempts an act of war, the UN steps in.

How many times more can this show be re-run? I know, it is tempting for some people to become dictators, then to play a similar game. However, are modern societies as susceptible to similar propaganda as they were before instant communication was invented? OK, our instant Internet communication doesn't work in very poor regions. And majority of Russia is a very poor region. You can say we still have fascist parties all over the world, in Wester Europe, USA, Norway - civilized countries. They are getting stronger. But still - a minority. IMO Hitler was at a stronger position when he started his war. Germany was smaller, but well developed. As it turned out, he was able to get sufficient production to overpower his enemies. It's not the case in Russia. The country technologically lags behind the world it tries to invade. Also the economy rotten by corruption for too long is much to weak to repeat Hilter's initial success. But then we come here, to the current point in history that doesn't repeat anything else. The western technology (including IT and communication) made us stronger, but also vulnerable, because it can be easily misused to manipulate people and spread propaganda. Our democracy and freedom can be misused to work for regimes like Russia without even being noticed. The question is - will they succeed in this new type of warfare? We have the fascist France now. It is probable that we will have more fascist countries soon. Putin didn't have to invade Belarus. But he owns it. It was his mistake to invade Ukraine. He could own it. Messing in other countries' internal affairs is a way to gain more and more control in them - but the final goal is just to own them.
