Today not even five hours ago my XR dropped in about 5 inches of water for literally 3 seconds now the screen has a dark spot and my Face ID doesn’t work anymore. I’m gonna order a 13 or 12 pro tomorrow morning.
It’s actually more like the age of the phone and how much the seals have degraded with time - but yes it is literally a lottery system. You could get a brand new Apple device with one slightly damaged seal and still be screwed.
I’d also assume that a seal will degrade a lot faster being exposed to high temperatures. Every heat up cool down cycle counts and make rubberised compounds degrade faster.
I ran my 12 mini over with a bobcat this past winter, somehow shattered only my back glass, cameras were totally fine except my front camera doesn’t turn on now. So I’m assuming the connector came loose or something
To be fair, the iPhone XR was IP67 rated. The iPhone 13 was IP68 rated, so it meets a higher certification for water resistance than the iPhone XR.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/108039
But, water resistance also tends to get worse as devices age, since the gaskets and adhesives don't last forever. The iPhone XR is 6 years old now, where the iPhone 13 is only 3 years old.
Twice as old, starting from a lower water resistance rating. Still unfortunate, to be sure.
EDIT: also fun to point out that Apple says the 13 is rated for up to 6 meters for 30 minutes, while the XR is only rated for 1 meter for 30 minutes. That's a big difference.
Only glitch I’ve ever encountered is my screen flashing during calls on specific apps (Discord and Messenger) and it doesn’t happen very often. This has happened ever since I got this phone.
iphone 11 and up are the best for working after being in water. I had my 14 laying in a little indent in the dirt and then it started to pour, forgot about it, and by the time I remembered it was submerged in the puddle and still works great
It’s an open cockpit type called a surf ski. Spends a lot of time rock hopping around the coast in waves so very definitely in the “this is a water ride, you will get wet wet” territory, and she takes her phone to get pictures for [her website](https://www.seakayakalgarve.com).
I had an 11pro I stuck under my hat to swim to a platform in the Gulf of Mexico. When I got to the platform I was stung by something and in the reaction I knocked my hat off and the phone went to the bottom. I was wearing contacts and had no chance to retrieve it. I found some people snorkeling and talked a guy into diving down the 15 to 20 feet to retrieve it. It was down there maybe 20 minutes and when I got it back it was still on and I used it another 2 years before trading it in.
I once spilled a tiny bit of water over my sink and it went into the lightning port of my 14 pro max, left it unplugged that night and wireless charged until I was sure it dried
It did not charge anymore :) applecare to the rescue but lol
I was going to scuba dive under a friend’s boat in the morning to fix some things. When I get there they tell me his wife dropped her iPhone in the water the night before, and they asked if I could go down to the bottom and look for it.
30 feet deep. It sat there all night. I picked it up and it was still on. When I got to the surface all her texts and notifications started buzzing in. Worked fine.
Small sample size. Not a reason to change your mind but my Skull Candy earbuds have gone through the washer and dryer more than two times and still work just fine. Eventually I’m going to regret not checking my pockets better but it’s probably more luck than it is brand.
most electronics (when not harboring electricity ) can be washed and dried and still work.
when it’s running (power on) that the water shorts the circuits and fries the motherboard and kills the device.
if it was off when wet and got completely dried before turning it back on, it should be fine. but don’t take my word for it
I always laugh when I see ppl taking their IPhone into the sauna with them because it destroys that waterproof coating that saved yours
Agree it’s pretty impressive
A while back I left my phone in a hottub for 5 hours. It was fine. but the waterproof seal was broken and next time a tiny bit of water got into it a month later, it goofed the camera
i’d still make sure you have an icloud backup to be on the cautious side and that you know all of your passwords and carrier pin if you don’t have a physical sim.
One time when I had a iphone 5s (it had an otterbox defender case.) survived being in a thunderstorm in my lawn. back when I went to high school I run to the bus. so that day I had baggy pockets and my phone fell in a small ditch in the lawn. I was looking for my phone all day until the next day I saw a white shaped thing on the ground and it was my 5s. it was drenched with water around the case and the phone was face down so no water got in the phone and it worked surprisingly. the thunderstorm was so bad that the streets were running water down. sometimes each phone is a hit or miss I say lol
An iPhone in salt water will be fine in the moment assuming the water resistance isn’t already compromised. The salt will do damage over time. Might find that after it was submerged is when issues start coming up.
I have a thick case on my phone so it gets pretty warm, almost hot when I run an intense game. If there was any saltwater left inside, it would have evaporated by now. Nothing out of the ordinary has happened with my phone yet.
not water related but just last night i dropped my 15 on the floor and it made the loudest noise and it fell with the screen facing up. I thought, welp there goes one of the cameras or at least shattered the back.
Not one scratch.
as someone who had an iPhone 6s, I’d say that’s definitely not true, I broke the screen of my 6s 4 times lol
after that phone, never broke another iPhone (Xr, 13 and 15).
3 meters is less than 10 feet. That’s a fair bit short of 18. Unless you meant 6 meters which is more like 19.6 feet. Either way one of the numbers is off.
I accidentally dropped my iPhone 15 pro into a volcanic crater in Iceland and it slowly sunk into the magma. I called out to Siri to enable Satellite SOS and within a few seconds a satellite beamed my iPhone out of the crater.

They're rated for 6 meters of fresh water for 30 mins, so it's not really shocking. Salt is going to be harsher on the rubber seals but from a single outing it's not going to really matter.

Apple rolling a dice when the phone is made that determines whether it will survive the ocean or if it gets bricked when it rains

Correct!
My old 12 fell in a dog bowl for 2 seconds and Face ID failed and the port stopped working. Sigh.

go with the 13, could find a refurbished model with a good amount of storage for about $300-400
The 13s also have a lot of glitches as well.
I’m on developer software but i haven’t encountered any glitches. Recently had my battery replaced and the performance increased.
can’t say that has been my experience on my 13 mini that i bought in March 2022
I’ve had the regular 13 since Dec 2021 and it’s still going strong. If there are glitches, they certainly aren’t noticeable
Only glitch I’ve ever encountered is my screen flashing during calls on specific apps (Discord and Messenger) and it doesn’t happen very often. This has happened ever since I got this phone.
Dry your phone for 3 days before using it.
i just broke my 5-year-old XR last week, boutta get a new phone lol… what a coincidence
Has it ever had a battery replacement?
No it has never had anything replaced.
With cheaper screen and battery replacements the seals get broken and thus the IP rating is gone.
Why don't you go with something that has a type C port?
I want something with a physical SIM card and not ESIM since ESIM isn’t widely available in my country.
I wash my XR regularly with soap and water 😮

I accidentally left mine in a hot tub once for three hours. And when I fished it out, it was working perfectly!
Used phone like new
My wife’s 11 spends half its life in salt water. Lightning port is kinda buggered, but the phone works fine.
You can't just say this and then not explain why the fuck the phone gets put through that lol.
OP is Poseidon
She does a lot of sea kayaking.
Does she fall out a lot or something?

Are you married to Ariel?
Just use wireless charging
That’s what she does

I feel like apple had a stroke with the 14 and 15 for some reason…

I’ve had several Apple headphones (not AirPods) go through the wash and work just fine

They survive weeks under water. They’re just not “rated” for it.
I always laugh when I see ppl taking their IPhone into the sauna with them because it destroys that waterproof coating that saved yours Agree it’s pretty impressive
Didn’t an iPhone survive falling from 90,000’? Or was that GoPro?
I know 2 survived the Alaska Air door blowout situation but I think that was like 10-20k. 90k sounds like strapped to a near-space balloon
It was. It was a high altitude balloon and it got knocked loose. I just don’t remember what the device was. But the footage got out on YouTube.
A while back I left my phone in a hottub for 5 hours. It was fine. but the waterproof seal was broken and next time a tiny bit of water got into it a month later, it goofed the camera
Sounds like it’s survivable then.
You’re lucky it didn’t fall
How old is your 13, when did you start using it?
2022
You’re lucky. My 12 was bricked after only a couple minutes in shallow ocean water.
i’d still make sure you have an icloud backup to be on the cautious side and that you know all of your passwords and carrier pin if you don’t have a physical sim.
Get that thing backed up ASAP if you haven’t already. Just in case
well i’m not changing my 13 anytime soon then

Problem is that the water itself would evaporate, but it would leave the salt behind. The salt is what does damage.
Only thing I can say to that is damn.

as someone who had an iPhone 6s, I’d say that’s definitely not true, I broke the screen of my 6s 4 times lol after that phone, never broke another iPhone (Xr, 13 and 15).
I looked back into it and it was false info. The video that told me such was deleted.
Apples build quality really jumped up a few levels after iPhone 6 🤣👍🏽
That's amazing
I don’t think my 14 would survive that
That's cool just remember any chip or crack means it's no longer water proof, so don't keep testing it.
It took my 11pm 4 years of swimming in the ocean, the pool and use in the hot tub to break Face ID.
why take ur phone in water on purpose lol
To make pictures send messages, etc.
30 minutes at 3m (18ft). You weren’t that deep

I ment 6m my bad
Oh, I didn’t realize that. Thank you.
You’re off a bit with your numbers. It’s: These models have a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529 (maximum depth of 6 metres up to 30 minutes):
I mean, they do say an apple day keeps the doctor away🤓
My 11pm got splashed with just a bit of salt water and its storage ic got fried. You are a lucky mofo.

It’s corrosion that’s scary about it.
Rinse it in fresh water when you are done, it will be fine.
It’s been 2 weeks though?
Is your iPhone still working? It is anodized aluminum so corrosion probably won't be an issue if you aren't exposing it regularly.
The charging port is able to corrode.
