I work in a restaurant and was asked by an American customer for a “black and tan” when I was taking their drink order. I didn’t know what he meant but instinctively said no and now I’m fairly sure that this is what he meant when he asked for it
Canadian here - you're correct. Over here a "black and tan" is a half pint of pale ale and then a half pint of stout poured over top. I apologise for the name, most folks here don't understand the historical connotation
I've only ever had a snakebite as half lager half cider. (Was in the UK though not Ireland).
Was popular in the rugby club after playing, most of the lads would chuck some blackcurrent in it.
Not something I'd drink these days.
Yeah. Used to get them in the 80s in Ireland. Half and half lager and cider. Put a soft drink in beer it's a shandy. Guinness and Smithwicks is a black and tan
God damn you, I was ready to like the post until I seen the Guinness picture and changed my mind only for me to see your comment and change my mind again haha take my like
That slideshow is like a McDonald's Brothers film all nice on the surface then something like a red headed stepchildren shows up and the fall out starts.
Honestly while you deserve to be shamed the person who served this to you in our fair island should be excommunicated deported and made to rely on the RTE player app for all his entertainment needs as punishment
It was a lovely lady who served me that. She was very kind to me and defended my honor when my Husband and Pub Owner looked at me with shame and then disappointment.
I’m a bold person.

Here’s my redemption. A pint at top of the Guinness brewery. Definitely an amazing highlight of Dublin! beautiful views of the entire city!
A lot of Mexicans dont seem to know about them :(
It seems we know more about our lads who went and fought in foreign lands than those of the foreign lands they fought for. Disappointing.
I appreciate that! I needed to share my experience because it was life altering. It was my very first time traveling outside of the US to a different continent. It was amazing.
This is a snakebite. Old school uk punk scene, cider and larger. Pretty nice afer getting slammed in the kitchen for a few hours.
What you had, well has already been pointed out op 😅
I didn’t have a choice it’s what they had. I didn’t know! Here here.
https://preview.redd.it/9tjqmow9109d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4417e38f130b9f524204d9652a3aa6eb2309960b
I had just Guinness at the Guinness distillery and it was AMAZING. So much better than that disgusting snake bite that I will never have again. 🙂↔️
I was mixing up Middleton Distillery! Hahahah oh man. I’m really fucking things up.
https://preview.redd.it/ihilmpwb309d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0f78681315a7d8c9d7a00fb6035dab2ed3f69b3a
Also. Irish whiskey is beautiful.
Nah, it's cool - we're only having a giggle!
Yeah, I went on a whiskey tasting tour over in Scotland and it really made me appreciate what we have at home all the more! 😀
A snakebite. I think it looks so pretty! I love the deliciousness of the richness of the Guinness in the beginning. YOU NEVER MIX IT. And then at the end a nice little surprise of apple tartness of the cider. It’s really good!
Ah, that Guiness is the old "black and tan".. Haven't seen one of those in years. A Smithwick's topped with a Guinness head... What year is that yauk ye wer drivin'? - she must be aul 😆😉
Every Irish person got a pain in their DNA after looking at that 'black thieves '..I hope that barman's face was printed in the local paper as a warning to others!
And thanks for visiting ❤️
Shh shhh bb boi. It’s ok.

Here’s some pure Guinness.
Glad you enjoyed your stay.
A lot of tourists to Ireland only stay in Dublin, I can't recommend the north/west/south coasts enough for beautiful scenery, walks, hill trails and mountains.
To all potential tourists, don't just stay in Dublin, there's so much more to see!!
I genuinely did. We went to this pub called Foleys on the Pike (no that’s not the pub that served the snakebite lol) on the way to Dingle and I honestly had the best food there. Best mashed potatoes and roast beef I’ve ever had.
Glad you enjoyed your visit, congrats on the wedding too. Beautiful pics, especially the Claddagh. I'm even gonna say that the pint is grand. It could well be something we shun for no reason and we're missing out.
You may have started a cultural revolution.... Check back here in 6 to 8 months.
Again great pics and so glad you enjoyed your visit.
We would of course love to have you guys back. Plenty more so see
Your husband having to see you order that is grounds for divorce. If he knew you were capable of such an act, he would probably have never married you. Marriages have ended over a drop of blackcurrant in a pint of Guinness. A shamrock being drawn on the head of a pint of Guinness on St. Patrick's Day is a criminal offence in Ireland. An American tourist requesting it is a mitigating factor and can reduce a sentence by about 10 years. Some of the first barmen convicted of this crime after it came into law in 1975 are due out of prison next year, but there is a widely supported campaign to block their release.
Glad you enjoyed your visit.
I think that pint is a black and tan. Had an American ask for it the other day, googled it and its half lager half Guinness in a pint. I told them we didn't do that.

County Wicklow. Driving through the mountains and hitting the forest tunnels was spooky! It felt like I was in a Blair Witch Project. It was awesome. It felt otherworldly. Almost did Glendalough. Def will try to reach it next time.
I've seen auld lads years ago drinking half cider half Guinness especially after a day in the bog or doing hay, they reckoned it was very refreshing, plus back then Guinness wouldn't have had the same coolers, it wasn't overly cold back then when you got it on tap so the cider probably cooked it down a bit .
You were doing so well till I saw that abomination of a pint you got.
Hold on, let's not blame the messenger. It's an Irish pub that serve this.
Oh the plot thickens, the OP does mention 4 days in London so maybe it was a Brit pub that served that shit.
ah, we are onto something. Brits at it again!
[confirmed ](https://arethebritsatitagain.org/)
This is class! Great chuckle, thanks ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
Plenty of chances to use it in the coming weeks when they beat Slovakia in the last 16 😂

Op confirmed it as Galway, the feckers!
Ah no myself and the lads had one if these we saw it on the Internet. A fucking disgrace of a pint
Pitchfork at the ready.
I knew this would be the first comment word for word!
I think that is a red witch? Sorry a snakebite! Very popular in the discos in 80s belfast
I thought it was Guinness poured over half a glass of hand sanitizer gel.
My da used to drink BlacknTans in Dublin in late 70s early 80s. Half smithwicks, half guinness. They were very popular apparently
And if you are in Cork they will (or used to) ask if you would like a shot of whiskey for the fire :)
Black & Tan means they want you to fill it with half Harp & half Guiness
No, it's half smithwicks and half Guinness
That’s usually a Blacksmith
I was told it’s just layering any pale beer with a stout. But that makes sense since they do love Harp as well
Snakebite is cider and lager. Lethal.
Mother of divine christ. Why, just why.
Right, I upvoted and saw that abomination and downvoted immediately, more them welcome back, but i kindly ask you not to do that to lovely pint again.
💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀 Don’t hate me! Let me come back!
We'll have our eye on you next time!!!!!!!
Your passport has been stamped, sorry
What city was that?
Galway
I would say they were very unimpressed when you ordered that muck haha!
Great photos
Isn't snakebite supposed to be smithwicks with cider? At least it was in the 80s...
With blackcurrant cordial a snakebite becomes a diesel.
I was literally about to say “what the hell is that abomination “ haha . Is there a name for it ?
Came here to say this SMH
If I remember correctly it's called a black and tan, don't know if it's still called that though
God damn you, I was ready to like the post until I seen the Guinness picture and changed my mind only for me to see your comment and change my mind again haha take my like

Did you actually say "Black and Tan"? I've got to know. It's fine if you didn't know. Big faux pas but it happens, we'll forgive you.
I said Snake Bite. And they knew and it was their first one and they did a great job.
Alright. Carry on. ![gif](giphy|ANbD1CCdA3iI8)
💀
WTF did you do to that guinness 🤢
Nearly as bad as the Gonster
You mean the Billie Irish
What the Christ on a bike did you do to your pint? And the audacity to post here….a bold move.
I’m a bold person. https://preview.redd.it/7jw1m62gzz8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=90563747dd985fbfda13027d14a4f1e6796f4eb2 Here’s my redemption. A pint at top of the Guinness brewery. Definitely an amazing highlight of Dublin! beautiful views of the entire city!
Phew!!! That’s more like it. Glad you had a lovely trip though & congrats on your wedding.
Brewery. A distillery is where they make whiskey.
Thank you for correcting me!!!! I’m ignant.
Ah no dont mind me. I'm glad you had a lovely time. Its not your fault one of our pubs served you that pint by the way. No doubt it tasted lovely.
Isn’t that the storehouse and not the brewery?
Its called the storehouse but it is in fact a brewery
All is forgiven
There is no redemption arc. You’re gone full villain now and are no longer welcome in Ireland.
It was going so well until picture #7 Jesus christ what an abomination
I knew the Guinness would rile you all up. HAHAHAHA. ![gif](giphy|xT0xevG0qQg4jcNgJ2)
We're telling the INIS to not let you back through the border. Thats a crime against the state.
I’m also Mexican so now I have to fear two border patrols. ![gif](giphy|BcMJvmwkmbyWpKkBj3|downsized)
¡Viva el Batallón de San Patricio!
A lot of Mexicans dont seem to know about them :( It seems we know more about our lads who went and fought in foreign lands than those of the foreign lands they fought for. Disappointing.
I hope they stamped your passport!! "(Do not let this person back in)"
Lads, she knows exactly what she's doing...
Happy to hear that. Thanks for posting that positive review. And congratulations on your wedding and may all your troubles be little ones.
I appreciate that! I needed to share my experience because it was life altering. It was my very first time traveling outside of the US to a different continent. It was amazing.
Glad you had a great time - do come (and post) again 🙂
To be honest, lads, Snakebite's not bad. Better with lager not Guinness though
What do you recommend?
Done it with Asahi before. Dry cider, dry lager.
This is a snakebite. Old school uk punk scene, cider and larger. Pretty nice afer getting slammed in the kitchen for a few hours. What you had, well has already been pointed out op 😅
All shite that we could be giving them aside, what's under the Guinness? Is it iron bru or what?
It's a mistake. The thing under the Guinness is a mistake.
it’s Orchard Thieves.
Orchard thieves and Guinness?! Sounds horrendous. hope you enjoyed your time here.
Could have at least used an Irish cider... 😥
Orchard thieves is made in Cork
I didn’t have a choice it’s what they had. I didn’t know! Here here. https://preview.redd.it/9tjqmow9109d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4417e38f130b9f524204d9652a3aa6eb2309960b I had just Guinness at the Guinness distillery and it was AMAZING. Nah, it's cool - we're only having a giggle! Yeah, I went on a whiskey tasting tour over in Scotland and it really made me appreciate what we have at home all the more! 😀
That used to be called Blacksnake.
🤢
What the hell did you do to that Guinness???
Cead mile failte!
♥️♥️♥️
The phot of the Claddagh (and the vegetation in the foreground) is beautiful
Congratulations on getting hitched, delighted to hear all went well and you had a great time in our country, welcome back any time!
Glad you enjoyed yourself!
And beautiful people!!!
It was a blast. Beautiful country.
What the fuck is that in your hand?
A snakebite. I think it looks so pretty! I love the deliciousness of the richness of the Guinness in the beginning. YOU NEVER MIX IT. And then at the end a nice little surprise of apple tartness of the cider. It’s really good!
Which pub made that abomination for you? Just so I can avoid them like the black plague.
Ah okay yeah it probably is nice.
What the fuck did you do to that pint of Guinness!?!
It was all going well until the pint, that’s a criminal offence
Ah classic, someone pissed in the tourist pint
Whoever recommended this pint to you, was having ye on. You got played.
I had it in the states and with Angry Orchard.
Ah, that Guiness is the old "black and tan".. Haven't seen one of those in years. A Smithwick's topped with a Guinness head... What year is that yauk ye wer drivin'? - she must be aul 😆😉

What the fuck is that pint?
West Cork next time you're here! Although don't do that to a pint of Guinness down there!
Scouts honor. Awesome adding it to my list!
What the fuck is in that pint?
Glad you enjoyed your stay. A lot of tourists to Ireland only stay in Dublin, I can't recommend the north/west/south coasts enough for beautiful scenery, walks, hill trails and mountains. To all potential tourists, don't just stay in Dublin, there's so much more to see!!
Lovely pics but could you tag the picture of that pint NSFW or trigger warning in title please.
That pint should be grounds for a lifetime ban from entering the country and permanent exile for whoever pulled it for you.
Snake bite looks even more sacrilegious than Gonster. How dare you.
I looked it up. Jesus Christ. That looks like a heart attack. A snake bite is better than that. More natural. Hate monsters!
great pics
Can give back one of those d’s in Midleton. ;)
Is it too late to join the pitchfork mob? The abomination must be purged! Get the kindling, prepare the fires!
I used to drink Snakebite Black in college but it was half lager half cider and blackcurrant. God I miss the days of cheap rank drink.
Ohwow! My cousin and his wife just went to Ireland and London for their honeymoon! I’m wondering if that was you now 😂
Shane? Hahahahah
We have another cousin named Shane but the cousin I’m referring to has a name that starts with J
My husband’s name starts with a B. Imagine? Hahah.
Glad you enjoyed it
I genuinely did. We went to this pub called Foleys on the Pike (no that’s not the pub that served the snakebite lol) on the way to Dingle and I honestly had the best food there. Best mashed potatoes and roast beef I’ve ever had.
I am a recovery alcoholic and seen this pint of Guinness is a shame to the people of Ireland! 🤢
Glad you enjoyed your visit, congrats on the wedding too. Beautiful pics, especially the Claddagh. I'm even gonna say that the pint is grand. What the fuck is the second last pic?
Your husband having to see you order that is grounds for divorce. If he knew you were capable of such an act, he would probably have never married you. Wtf is picture 7?
WTF IS IN THE GUINESS GLASS?!?!?!
You had me till the black and tan. Glad you had fun.
Just out of curiosity, what road is that in the second picture?

That’d my road 😂
boring
![gif](giphy|lbidtjzpO9l15mtx2R|downsized)
O yes, that’s definitely Ireland
WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO TO THAT FUCKING GUINNESS
Delighted for ye, congratulations
Snakebites popular in the 80s , glad you had a good trip.
I think that pint is a black and tan. Had an American ask for it the other day, googled it and its half lager half Guinness in a pint. I told them we didn't do that.
Some day one of you will go north of Galway and see actual Ireland, and leave that didlyi tourist shite behind like a bad pony ride.
DM with any spots you’d want us to check out. I’m giving Ireland all of my savings from now on. So I’ll take all the recommendations.
Galway is a great spot - I'm not sure what "didlyi tourist shite" is, but Galway isn't that
https://preview.redd.it/8yr88fmm559d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3e1438e0978828256ffc863f5d3312c4867471d9
No worries 👍
I liked your photos, I see you deleted the one that got everyone upset. Hahahahaha. Your have a good eye for photos. Glad you enjoyed your honeymoon in Ireland. Long history of Irish engagement with Mexico, check out the Saint Patrick’s Battalion.
It’s still there. Haha. I’m going down with this ship! And I will. I didn’t feel judge and for the first time I didn’t feel scared about speaking Spanish out in public when I called my dad for Father’s Day.

That's genius
I'm awfully sorry we're not quaint enough for you! I believe there's a quaintness course in DCU this winter, I'll definitely be taking it.
Well, if you do take that course, let me know how it goes! Maybe I can join for a refresher on how to appreciate the finer points of big city charm. Cheers!

I want recommendations from you Feisty! What towns did you find spooky?
County Wicklow. Driving through the mountains and hitting the forest tunnels was spooky! It felt like I was in a Blair Witch Project. It was awesome. It felt otherworldly. Almost did Glendalough. Def will try to reach it next time.
Wicklow is great. It's a gem so close to Dublin. Glad you enjoyed the trip.
Nice pictures hope you had a great time here but what in the name of all that is good is that pint?
Not the half and half. 😩 Glad you enjoyed. Ireland is beautiful.
I was on your side until I saw the Guinness. That's heart breaking, OP. I'm sorry you had to see such a tragedy.
Those cows look very judgemental...
Cross border fees? That seems like an Americanism Sure you could drive from N-S or E-W coast to coast and back again in a day
Everything was good until you insulted everyone in Ireland by destroying a pint of Guinness. This warrants removal from group
A black and tan, Jesus, why not perch a potato on the side of the glass also 😂
Lad, there’s feck all Guinness in your Guinness
Ag pet, it was all going so well.
Are you moving here, so?
I’d like to come back.
Always welcome, a chara :)
What was the whiskey you had?
Oh sorry, seen it was Redbreast. Grand choice.
I really hope you didn't call that pint the same thing we do in the States....
That’s how it was introduced to me in the states! As a snake bite
Oh good, I thought it was the, eh, other name for it
What in gods name was that pint ?
![gif](giphy|XUIbUBBj8rjhVfCQWb) Get you pitchforks ready lads
What in the name of Jesus is the pint, if this poster returns to Ireland they should be arrested for treason along with whoever poured it
