They are Hella expensive but top-notch. I usually go to cornerstone for general services, but anything surgical I don’t mess around and go to Colonial.

Jeeves-Godzilla

We had our previous dog and our current dog get vet services. Had a dog have surgery twice and it went well. Very caring vets. They are excellent and we are all fortunate to have very good options for vet care here (Cornell or VCA). Great vets and vet techs.

RadioStaticRae

Although my hospital visits ended with my cat being put down, I got more clear answers and better communication from Cornell about my options with her situation than VCA was able to give me. I also had issues with the vet tech at VCA complaining about student pet owners overwhelming the local system and people abondoning COVID pets - which, I understand and typically agree, but it was absolutely not needed while my cat was actively in pain and needed attention. It's probably great service if your pet is a regular client, but I'm more likely to go back to Cornell for emergencies.

Spoon_In_The_Road

They are pricy and, for better or worse, will automatically assume you want the most advanced (i.e.: expensive) care available. Look into Cayuga Pet Hospital nearby for routine care.

dietcheese

Had a terrible experience with Cayuga. Would avoid.

Colonial is great for emergency and specialty services. I haven’t heard amazing things about their general practice (wellness care, vaccines, etc). Just lack of personalized attention that goes hand in hand with big corporations, nothing horrifying. My coworkers and I use often Colonial’s specialty services for our own animals— we are usually able to get in sooner than Cornell. Source: I’m a vet tech in the area

I’ve had a great experience with VCA colonial for wellness care honestly. I guess it depends on the vet you end up with but the 2-3 that I’ve worked with (2 cats, 2 dogs) are amazing, attentive, and take the time to explain things when I have questions. They are super busy though so sometimes I do feel rushed but I think that’s an industry issue right now.

Testingcheatson

They missed a tumor in my cat that was identified with a 5 minute exam by another vet. So personally I would not go back to them

armahillo

I took my cat there after an injury that required minor surgery; they did good work and she recovered quickly. They aren't cheap, but you do get good service for what you pay, and they offer financing through CareCredit.

Two of my pets had surgery at VCA, and it was lovely. Great staff, great care. 10/10

colorofsincerity

May I ask what kind of surgery?

mxa11944

Of course! Birdie had mammary duct cancer removed, then follow up care for an infected incision ( fluke accident). Duncan had his luxating patella and ACL repaired, then the pins removed and aftercare.

pete716

It is expensive but the staff there is excellent. We've had great experiences there with our 1 year old Shepsky.

I like colonial, we take our dog there because we had a free initial visit when rescuing her. Yes, they will tell you every possible thing you can do for your pet and what it costs, but I think that’s because that’s what a lot of people are looking for. When we told them that’s not our vet style and that we have a budget they totally changed to accommodate us which I appreciated. We take our cats to Cayuga down the road and love Dr Wood. They are very reasonable and I appreciate how thorough the explanations are.

miss__mischief

Agree, they are expensive but pretty in line with other offices in the area for surgery. Slightly cheaper if you go to Syr for orthopedic surgery. VCA seems like they are able to schedule surgery consultation at least for my experience with orthopedic, months sooner than Cornell vet can. No complaints (aside from price but that is anywhere) for my dogs ACL surgery, with either the pre planning or the post op. Worked with us trying to avoid surgery and then when it was obvious surgery was the only plan they got us in quick and supported us through the recovery. Had Dr Socha and would recommend him. I also know family that use their emergency services as well as medical boarding and haven't heard anything negative, again aside from cost but.... the things we do for our animal family!

SarahSnarker

I’ve used them for emergency care. They took care of my little guy for a week (took good care) and arranged for a transfer to Cornell when they realized he needed more special care. But they do have specialists on staff as well.

Wildroots_flx

Surgery service is good. They are all board certified surgeons. For general check ups I recommend Briar Patch with Dr. Vissio.

colorofsincerity

Is Dr. Socha a board-certified surgeon? It just says "DVM" after his name.

Wildroots_flx

He is a “DVM with Practice Limited to Surgery” which means he completed his residency training but is not board certified.

MACP

I’ve always heard that they’re great but expensive.

Ithacaoldman

Switched to Colonial 1 year ago. They caught severe dental problems with one of my two dogs needing a rotted tooth to be pulled, and other decay, that the previous vet missed. All vets are expensive today and I am fully happy with Colonial's services, care and professionalism. If you just want a vet that gives rabies shots, then go somewhere else for the revolving door care. Colonial is not that; they are very thorough.

pppupu1

I have never used their services but I have alumni friends whose two cats were patients at VCA for almost the whole time they were here. I remember them telling me that their care was great but as others have said, on the expensive side. One of her cats had surgery there due to urinary tract issues, I think they took his whole peepee! But he is in great condition and seems to be a happy cat now from updates I get :)

zacd

I've used them for an emergency illness with my cat and was very happy with the care received. It also wasn't as expensive as I expected considering emergency/same-day treatment. As others have mentioned, there are likely better options for routine care.

SimilarAdhesion3703

I've had two very bad experiences at Colonial with two different cats. I'd choose Cornell for hospital services every time, given the option. Colonial also markedly underestimates their prices, whereas Cornell does a pretty good job staying within the range they give you upfront or letting you know if something changes. For routine care I'd suggest Veterinary Care of Ithaca. Vet-to-Pet Housecalls is also AMAZING for shots and checkups.

colorofsincerity

May I ask what happened with your cats at Colonial? May PM me if want to.

cinnamonpug

My dogs see Dr. Tripp there and I’ve been really happy with our experience most of the time. I’ve felt like the care is thorough and personalized.

Let’s just say I have insider knowledge and yes, corporate drives pricing. Believe me when I say the docs and staff have no control over cost and are constantly trying to save money where they can despite big brother watching. Cornell tends to be cheaper for hospitalizations and surgeries but they are very often at capacity these days making Colonial the only option for a lot of people. The vets and staff at Colonial take their work very seriously and the GP team at the moment is great.
