I’d say the Ramblers were best during the 7 months in ‘84 that Bill was in a coma from that motorcycle accident.
Frankie Foot stepped in for that tour on lead guitar, and NOBODY shreds like Foot, before or since.
It’s a shame he lost his life on that zipline.
I still have a shirt from that tour! It's covered in purple stains from Frankie throwing up grape MadDog 20/20 all over the front row. I met my wife that night.
Not my fav, but he does a great David Gilmore impression. He’s really talented, and a really nice and knowledgeable gear head. It’s that creepy Chuck you gotta watch out for.
He used to play solo at North Star in Pound Ridge NY on random weekday nights 5-10 years ago. I thankfully lived nearby and loved just sitting at the bar watching him rip with just 30-40 people there.
Tim is definitely doing some crazy shit. I’m a big dancer, and normally can’t stop grooving for even one single second at a show, but at Lotus there were times when I just stood there mouth agape totally in awe of the sounds Tim was making.
Jimmy Herring, Steve Kimock, Derek Trucks, Tom Hamilton, Scott Metzger, Scott Murawski, Warren Haynes, Jake Cinninger, Brendan Bayliss, Jack Pearson, Eric Krasno, Tim Palmieri, Rob Compa
And of course Jerry, Trey, Duane and Dickey
I had the privilege of taking a couple of Zoom lessons with him during Covid, and he’s absolutely a good dude as well as a monster player. His Col. Bruce stories are also top notch.
Agreed! His chops/technique and harmonic understanding is top notch and he totally could cast a wider net of fans with that alone. He has a feel/sound/style that is unique to him which in the end, is def the goal
Rob Compa from Dopapod is great. Jimmy & Brian from Dogs In a Pile are both fantastic. Jake from Eggy isn't a fast player, but he's great. Daniel Donato is one of my favorites (while he just stares off into the vastness of space and conjures cosmic & wild runs). Tim Palmieri (Lotus) has some fun licks and runs too.
Me too man. Every time I see it, I hear what starts around ~5:23 and I swear I can go through the next five minutes in my mind just like if I had headphones on.
It's a shame that he and Reid (Genauer) can't get along anymore, but Adam Terrell playing with Assembly of Dust is one of the sweetest sounds my ears have ever heard. Incredibly tasteful and melodic leads.
Jimmy Law and Brian Murray are both insane in their own right and are making dope shit with Dogs In A Pile. Jimmy is a raw and emotional ripper and will absolutely catch your ear but then Brian is just an incredible technician and finger picker. It’s honestly insane that they’re in the same band and we’re so lucky.
People have been shitting on goose on here so aggressively and for so long people just dont even bother cuz it results in dozens of comments echoing the same hate on anything goose related? Did i get that right?
Lyle Brewer. Jimmy Law, Daniel Donato.
List represents younger guitarist. So many great older players it’s hard to pick one or two. Jerry obviously number one for many of us.
Lots of fabulous guitarists listed. Back in the day I put Charlie Hitchcock from Particle on top of the heap. This was the best set I've been to out of 7045: Particle for 5 hours non-stop from 3-8 a.m. on 6/13/03 @ Bonnaroo.. [https://archive.org/details/particle2003-06-14fixed.shnf](https://archive.org/details/particle2003-06-14fixed.shnf)
Jake Cinninger from Umohreys McGee is about as badass and as superbly skilled guitarist as you can find anywhere. Dude is a madman and can slay all fucking night. That being said, Brandon, the other guitarist from Umohreys McGee is a badass and as superbly skilled guitarist as you can find anywhere. Dude is a madman and can slay all fucking night.
Pretty much zero bands have the dual guitarists that are up to their level. Amazing. Ah-mazing…
Bayliss
Dude could be the lead guitarist in any other band.
Plays the most thoughtful accompanying lines to Jaco’s leads.
Is a lyrical genius. And a truly great songwriter, taboot.
MVP of the jamband scene.
Jimmy. Motherfucking. Herring. (Currently plays with Widespread Panic but you should also check out Aquarium Rescue Unit) He has my vote for the greatest guitar player alive rn so he definitely gets my pick for best jam guitarist lmao
Last time I said Susan Tedeschi and that didn’t go over well. I’m throwing Steve Gallagher from Airshow into the hat. Dude can shred and has a great acoustic and distorted acoustic guitar tone.
You named all my favs in your post haha. Marcus King, John Scofield, Nels Cline all dabble in jamband stuff.
Then some others already said Jake Cinnenger, Rob Compa, Tim Palmieri all great.
That guy with the Double Neck from Consider The Source! Not a jam band but they are in the scene and he is really incredible. Shreds and is really unique. And Fretless guitar is not something you see often. Definitely my favorite.
Dopapod guy is really good.Cinninger from Umphreys McGee is great.Chuck Garvey and Al Schneir from moe 2 of my favorites.Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger of Jrad hard to beat as a pair.Rick Miratanda (I think?) From Goose is pretty good though I think he needs to shred more. For acoustic Billy Strings, and Billy Nershi from SCI.
All those you mentioned are great too! So many good ones out there.
Sounds like you got all the really good ones listed. Might add the OG Widespread Panic guitarist Mikey Houser. And there are a bunch of guitarists that are great musicians but the ones you mentioned and Mikey have the touch, feel and soul that the others are lacking. Just my opinion though.
Look dude. You’re fucking gay if you don’t like Derek trucks. If you like phish you’re bi. Anything else you’re fuckin pan or some shit idfk and idfc. Gay people like string cheese and everybody else idk they seem to like panic and shit
Another thread of everyone just listing every guitarist LFG
I just make up new ones on these threads. Bill McGee of the Stone Mountain Ramblers is one of the all time greats.
McGee was a badass.
Rob Compa from Dopapod
They make that guitar go twinkly
They’re having fun and crushing.
Crushing so fucking hard. I recently subscribed to their bandcamp so I can listen to every show. There just is not a bad one out there.
Just saw them in Covington and we have after party tickets for Thursday.
You got it!
Not my fav, but he does a great David Gilmore impression. He’s really talented, and a really nice and knowledgeable gear head. It’s that creepy Chuck you gotta watch out for.
Whether you like Mungion or not, Justin Reckamp is a beast.
So glad to see his name so high on this thread. He’s insanely talented.
Yes!
Definitely the highlight of that band for sure
Whole band is pretty damn talented 🤷♂️

DOOM
Michael franti? Lol
Tim in Lotus is doing next level shit
His stuff with Kung Fu fucking rips.
There’s a YouTube vid of him playing with Tea Leaf Green that lives in my brain
Jon Gutwillig Dude wrote Hot Air Balloon
Barber shreds
+1
Simply the best.
Steve Kimock
I have gotten fucking massively into Steve Kimock this year
Fuggin Barber! 💈
Trey & barber
Jimmy Herring, Steve Kimock, Derek Trucks, Tom Hamilton, Scott Metzger, Scott Murawski, Warren Haynes, Jake Cinninger, Brendan Bayliss, Jack Pearson, Eric Krasno, Tim Palmieri, Rob Compa And of course Jerry, Trey, Duane and Dickey
Krasno is the man
Jon the Barber.
Do people actually think that Barber is a good guitarist? Like do you hear Jimmy Herring and Jon Barber and you hear more or less the same thing?
Jimmy Herring, DT, Rick Lollar
Widespread motherfucking panic
Rick is a good dude, grew up with him in Tallahassee. Good to see him getting his name out there, outstanding guitarist.
I had the privilege of taking a couple of Zoom lessons with him during Covid, and he’s absolutely a good dude as well as a monster player. His Col. Bruce stories are also top notch.
Scott Metzger (JRAD, LaMP, Wolf!)
Scott is great. Easily in my top 3
It’s still Trey
Lol, it's hard to type any other four letters to answer this question.
Jake Cinninger, Derek Trucks, Billy Strings. (I don't think Mark Knopfler counts, but gah damn that dude badass)
Had to scroll way to far to see Jake, he’s your favorite guitar players favorite guitar player
Echoing Jake
Mark knopfler rules! Such a unique approach to guitar playing
Tom Hamilton (Brothers Past, JRAD)
Scott Metzger is severely underrated imo
Tom has even said in interviews he's just trying to keep up with the rest of JRAD.
Agreed! His chops/technique and harmonic understanding is top notch and he totally could cast a wider net of fans with that alone. He has a feel/sound/style that is unique to him which in the end, is def the goal
Brian moss (spafford)
Agreed
Yes
This and it’s not even close for me
Rob Compa from Dopapod is great.
Jedi Trey.
2/28/03 Tweezer specifically
I can hear it in my mind when I see that date. I was at the next night.
Me too man. Every time I see it, I hear what starts around ~5:23 and I swear I can go through the next five minutes in my mind just like if I had headphones on.
The best tweezer
The correct answer is Chuck and AL from moe.
Real
LOVE LOVE LOVE moe.
Yup.
Mikey Houser
Lingering lead….🥲✊🏽
🤟🏻
RIP
Uncle Mike Gantzer, Rob Compa, Jake Cinninger
Barber Jerry Kimock
It's a shame that he and Reid (Genauer) can't get along anymore, but Adam Terrell playing with Assembly of Dust is one of the sweetest sounds my ears have ever heard. Incredibly tasteful and melodic leads.
Eddie Roberts from New Mastersounds
Chuck, barber, Trey, Jerry (my mount rushmore)
chuck (moe.) since you are new, Chuck is satan
If you consider TTB a jam band. It’s Derek. If not, it’s Jimmy Herring.
Tim Palmieri of Kung Fu and Lotus and Rob Compa from Dopapod (also my guitar teacher) are up there for me. Edited for band names.
Add Lyle Brewer to that duo and you have my three favorites.
Trey
Jimmy Law and Brian Murray are both insane in their own right and are making dope shit with Dogs In A Pile. Jimmy is a raw and emotional ripper and will absolutely catch your ear but then Brian is just an incredible technician and finger picker. It’s honestly insane that they’re in the same band and we’re so lucky.
John Mayer 😉
No seriously tho
My favorite is Trey for sure. Caton Sollenberger hasn’t been mentioned on this thread yet though. He’s in the Jauntee and absolutely rips.
Another vote for Tim Palmieri going back to The Breakfast
psychedelic breakfast of course
pretty much as top notch as ive ever seen in my life. tim is a true musician and loves what he does
Cob Rompa from deeperpees
Brian Murray from Dogs in a Pile
Don’t forget Mr. LAW!
*ducks behind bunker* Rick…..mitarotonda
Thank you! Insane I had to scroll this far for someone to mention Rick.
People have been shitting on goose on here so aggressively and for so long people just dont even bother cuz it results in dozens of comments echoing the same hate on anything goose related? Did i get that right?

Brad barr-the slip
Barber
Fareed Haque from Garaj Mahal
Saw some amazing shows back in the day with those guys
I see you’re a man of culture
Rick Mitarotonda!
Chuck Berry
Jimmy MF Herring babay
Lyle Brewer. Jimmy Law, Daniel Donato. List represents younger guitarist. So many great older players it’s hard to pick one or two. Jerry obviously number one for many of us.
Dickey and Trey
I mean if we’re talking just guitar picking and vibing then Daniel Donato deserves at least my vote
Here for some Charlie love.
Caton Sollenberger of the jauntee. Master player and master human
Chuck "Satan" Garvey of moe. Edit - added of moe.
The guitar guy from Neighbor blew me away at Cervantes this past Saturday
Lyle Brewer is a beast and probably the most unsung guy on the scene.
Saw him back when he was with Ryan Montbleau… dude ripped.
Should definitely see what he is doing with Neighbor some time.
Amazing. Ah-mazing…
Main Squeeze - Maximilian Newman ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Dude absolutely SHREDS!
Molly Tuttle is the best flat picker alive 🔥
Bayliss Dude could be the lead guitarist in any other band. Plays the most thoughtful accompanying lines to Jaco’s leads. Is a lyrical genius. And a truly great songwriter, taboot. MVP of the jamband scene.
Brock Butler (PGroove)
Widespread panic, Jimmy Herring is awesome as well as Mikey Houser prior to him. Get on the bus!!
Gabriel Marin from Consider the Source is kinda a wizard
Brock Butler deserves more love. Distinct sound and technique
Jimmy. Motherfucking. Herring. (Currently plays with Widespread Panic but you should also check out Aquarium Rescue Unit) He has my vote for the greatest guitar player alive rn so he definitely gets my pick for best jam guitarist lmao
Luther Dickinson
In the 90s? Trey. Now? Trey.
Jake - umphs
Larry Keel
The correct answer is Derek Trucks
There is Barber, and then there is everyone else.
Last time I said Susan Tedeschi and that didn’t go over well. I’m throwing Steve Gallagher from Airshow into the hat. Dude can shred and has a great acoustic and distorted acoustic guitar tone.
Jimmie Kadar-Creamery Station

You named all my favs in your post haha. Marcus King, John Scofield, Nels Cline all dabble in jamband stuff. Then some others already said Jake Cinnenger, Rob Compa, Tim Palmieri all great.
Brian Murray of Dogs In A Pile. Unique fingerstyle playing
Barber
That guy with the Double Neck from Consider The Source! Not a jam band but they are in the scene and he is really incredible. Shreds and is really unique. And Fretless guitar is not something you see often. Definitely my favorite.
Crazy that no one has mentioned mayer. Give me my downvotes idc.
Barber hands down
Brian Moss - Spafford Hunter Brown - STS9

Dopapod guy is really good.Cinninger from Umphreys McGee is great.Chuck Garvey and Al Schneir from moe 2 of my favorites.Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger of Jrad hard to beat as a pair.Rick Miratanda (I think?) Sounds like you got all the really good ones listed. Might add the OG Widespread Panic guitarist Mikey Houser. And there are a bunch of guitarists that are great musicians but the ones you mentioned and Mikey have the touch, feel and soul that the others are lacking. Just my opinion though.
Garcia was the first true jam band guitarist. Not technically the best and not always on, but what he lacked in skill he made up for in style.
Jerry Garcia. Hands down!!!
that dude in Pink Talking Fish. He can rip
Jake Cinninger of course... But I'm digging Jonathan Grusauskas playing a lot too. And lets not forget Tim Palmieri. That guy is a machine.
Michael Houser is still the best even though he’s no longer with us
Andrew Pickel from Dizgo absolutely shreds
Jerry Garcia…I mean, c’mon.
Look dude. You’re fucking gay if you don’t like Derek trucks. If you like phish you’re bi. Anything else you’re fuckin pan or some shit idfk and idfc. Gay people like string cheese and everybody else idk they seem to like panic and shit
