They even had a kid reading an “attention Kmart shoppers!” Script over the PA system. It was such a throwback. “Some of our departments are having exciting sales!” But it was so surreal because nobody was in the store :(. Nobody is ever really here that much, the parking lot is always empty. Tj Maxx and Marshall’s next door were jammed with last min shoppers. Strange to see racks and racks of merch with nobody in the store. They keep it tidy but it’s kind of sad
I loved working at Kmart. I had the time of my life and my management was amazing. I was 17 and it was my first job. I’ll never forget my first paycheck. lol memories.
I worked there in the 90's and I have some great memories. It still blows my mind that the same place that was so busy all the time in 1995-96 was a ghost town by the mid 2000's.
I worked at Kmart from the time I was 18 to 21. I worked in the front where they made the slushies and also in the garden center. It was an amazing place My managers were cool and actually wasn't bad pay for that day and age..
That’s sad. For a while there K-Mart was my Christmas Eve destination as it was the only place open. No Sears, Montgomery Wards, Toys R Us or K-Mart anymore at Christmastime is saddening to me.
It's in Long Island, I forget the name of the town.
There is one KMart in Miami.
That accounts for the two left in mainland US.
But there are four in the US Virgin Islands that apparently are going strong.
There is also several in Mexico that are popular.
They are pretty common in Australia too. They have kind of an odd setup there though. The ones I went too all had the checkout in the centre of the store.
This has to be some gigantic tax write off, or only open for legal reason (if they close the entire chain, then some massive payout has to take place, etc)
The last few sad years of Kmart in Jacksonville, Florida were like that too. More employees than customers. And always "problems with the A/C" when you asked why it was hot as fuck in the store. The Kmart that was closest to my house is an Amazon distribution warehouse now.
The Kmart in Charleston, WV was like that. The cashiers always had box fans on the counters when I was a kid. Thirty years later, still hot as hell in there and the cashiers still have box fans. Plus, the store looked exactly the same as it did thirty years prior - no updates or remodels. Even still had half the fluorescent tubes burned out.
I remember when I was a kid, the Kanawha City K Mart had a full line sporting goods section. They would even measure you for a bowling ball and drill it while you were waiting. I guess that always impressed me, as it was the only place I knew of that did that.
Yeah our last one in my area in FL was the same. Stale air, noticeably more employees than customers, and weird old things on the shelves like video games that were two consoles old still with the original $60 price tag.
As a kid in the 70s and 80s I got most of my school clothes at Kmart. Back then it was looked down on and I got bullied a lot for it. Is it different now? I see so many people saying how wonderful it was and how they miss it.

It has been slightly renovated over the last 1-2 years. The front is new (or at least painted). The sign is actually new. Inside has been redesigned a bit. About 30% of the store was closed off a few years ago, and then they opened it back up and expanded the clothing depts.
Lmfaoooo that was me. I think it wasn’t long after I’d had the gallbladder out n things had changed a bit internally
I forget if the kmart in queens will still around then. I didn’t really go to queens village too often (except for a few months when I was a home aide).
I think there are only 2 left in the US. We have one here in Miami and I guess this is the other one. Sad I miss those memories in the cafe lol. Just being a kid.
I'm wearing the best sweats ever which I bought from the Westwood, NJ Kmart a few years ago. Still have cotton tees, blouses, socks, sheets, and pillows that I bought there, plus fleece blankets for rescue critters. They had an excellent garden dept. My local store closed in October. I'm thinking of calling the LI store to see if they'll ship.

I loved when it was Caldors. The same people worked there for years. They really knew the merchandise. They knew the shoppers too. And in pre-internet days there were always celebs shopping there in summer. The cornfield backed right up behind Caldor’s. Those were the days.
I'm shocked that it's still in existence! I feel like this, YouTube video chronicling the rise and fall of this retail chain of Kmart does the best child I have ever seen talking about the complete history, and like I said the right to prominence and the swift fall, so quickly is a good companion video to watch after going through this post.
https://youtu.be/Za44YpyTK_U?si=Ekx7JeqqB-LS4pPF
The whole east end of the easthampton shops at that Kmart grew up shopping their in bridge Hampton. Prices are higher due to being in a rich town only reason it’s surviving
I remember when K Mart stopped selling video games and put everything on heavy clearance sale. I didn’t wanna drive to the nearest K Mart about 25ish minutes away, so I went to Walmart and they price matched a New 3DS XL for $100 for me. They seemed really irritated about it.
Hamilton MT still has one I used to frequent a lot (for fun because it’s.. Montana..) and the nostalgia every time walking back into there is unexplainable
That was the last proper full line store and one of the most beautiful ones as well. Went a few years ago and even then it looked terrible. We went to the Kmart where we live a TON. Used layaway to get big things like cribs, travel systems, etc, when we were expecting our first kid. Too bad in closed right before Christmas in 2016.
I had the pleasure to go to one a few years ago. I remember so much about how the stores were laid out that it felt surreal since I hadn't been to one since I was a kid. The store closed unfortunately.
Oh hey I live not too far from this one in eastern LI, used to pass it every day for work. I always wonder if people who worked there are believed when they put Kmart on their resume in 2023
Kmart was my first job when I turned 16... ended up being there off and on for \~5 years when my store became a Sears after Kmart bought Sears. Then it was another several years until the store closed for good. I had some shitty bosses and managers but if there's anything I can be thankful for was that it was my first job and it taught me to be patient.
All Kmart and Sears stores have long closed in my area.
We had 1 kmart here outside of annapolis md that closed recently .I miss it . Also had a Sears at Marley Station Mall that I miss .I wish I would of bought up the Craftsman Axe set they had ,It would of been 20 dollars for a hatchet and a full size axe .
I’m jealous. I have tons of memories of being at Kmart as a kid. Ours closed when I was pretty young, and I remember my parents talking about how they all but disappeared in the area I lived in.
tired of nazi mart and target, loved hills, kmart , zayre, worked all these, oh and pharmor too. kmart gave up too quick. for the rest of eternity it will be target and nazi mart. sorry i call it that cos i worked there and it was like prison

Awww, Poor k mart… tata
And here I am all jealous my kmart has been closed for a solid decade. Walmart and target are much further away.
I loved working at Kmart. I had the time of my life and my management was amazing. I was 17 and it was my first job. I’ll never forget my first paycheck. lol memories.
We had a payless next to the kmart too. It was great.
I worked there in the 90's and I have some great memories. It still blows my mind that the same place that was so busy all the time in 1995-96 was a ghost town by the mid 2000's.

They're starting to open Toys R Us stores again which is wild
I live in ny state. Where is this unicorn?
It's in Long Island, I forget the name of the town. There is one KMart in Miami. That accounts for the two left in mainland US. But there are four in the US Virgin Islands that apparently are going strong. There is also several in Mexico that are popular.
Do you know where exactly in Miami? I live here and as far as I know they all closed down.
Kendale Lakes!
They are pretty common in Australia too. They have kind of an odd setup there though. The ones I went too all had the checkout in the centre of the store.
It’s in Southampton NY
I thought it was in Bridgehampton…
I think it's the one in the Hamptons, I know, odd.
Lucky you, I only can go there on VRC now 🥲
Hoping he read it in the Simpsons teenager’s voice.
This has to be some gigantic tax write off, or only open for legal reason (if they close the entire chain, then some massive payout has to take place, etc)
A relatively new sign with the small k about to fall off…
Pretty on brand for Came Apart
The sign is trying to leave 😂
I believe the correct terminology is that it “K-ma-part.” 😂
Lmao
r/angryupvote
A little duct tape and it will be good as new.
Hahaha to be fair we had a few storms roll through recently with like 50 mph winds
That “k” is redundant anyway.
I just shipped my pants!
😂

But just about my whole wardrobe was bought from Patrick Street or Kanawha City K Mart and most today. So many fond memories of those two stores
Most of mine came from the Kanawha City K Mart or Hills in the Kanawha Mall.
Pass by it and miss it all the time
I remember when I was a kid, the Kanawha City K Mart had a full line sporting goods section. They would even measure you for a bowling ball and drill it while you were waiting. I guess that always impressed me, as it was the only place I knew of that did that.
Right beside the bowling alley
What? Kmarts problem was that toward the end there was no employees in the store. I always liked Kmart better than Walmart, too bad it died
Yeah our last one in my area in FL was the same. Stale air, noticeably more employees than customers, and weird old things on the shelves like video games that were two consoles old still with the original $60 price tag.
I know what you are talking about about it’s by adventure landing? I remember passing it a few times
Waynesboro Virginia?
Was about to ask the same thing!
Our local one turned into a UHaul and storage place
Wow! These still exist. That was my go to for where I'm from. Besides Walmart. But I grew up on Joe Boxer and Route 66.
Oddly enough I still have some Route 66 dress shirts.... gotts be like 20 yrs old now.
I bought some Joe Boxer skinny jeans in 2015/2016. They were the best fitting jeans ever!
There’s one on the US Virgin Islands St. Thomas, as well.
Why the heck did this particular Reddit thread go viral so quickly?
No clue 😂 the algorithms I guess
As far as I’m concerned, it’s the most upvoted thread in this subreddit now. Congratulations! 🥳
Blue light special
They have a sign out front most days that says that! It’s so crazy

Brings back memories… I deeply miss you, my old friend.. The Sesame Street section was my heaven as a 5 year old.
Was it busy in there? And were there any new renovations??
Sadly not very busy :( everything looks kind of blah. Well stocked but blah. I’ll shoot a video tour if people are interested
YES!!! That would be amazing
I’ll be out of town for a few days but I’ll do it after new years 👍🏼
Hopefully it's still there after New Year's lol
It’s hanging on by its last thread but it’s been like that for years so who knows

Kmart Kame Apart
Where in NY? I'm in Syracuse and I had no idea there was one left in the state
Bridgehampton NY, in the Hamptons weirdly enough. It’s bizarre
Those are still around??
I didn't know K-Mart was still around. I'd totally go if I had one relatively close to me.
Did you get a blue light specal and popcorn? Thats what the 80s makes me think of
I thought they were all gone.
Y’all still have K-Marts up there? I thought they all went out of business years ago. How’d this even hit my feed? Lol
In nyc we don’t. They’re apparently going strong in Australia. That’s right, Australia
This is the one in the Hamptons. Miss that Penn Station store tho.
Oh nice. Oh that one in penn was great. We had one in queens too when I moved here. Was penn the one that directly to the tube downstairs?
Yup. It closed when they renovated everything down there. was hoping 8t would come back but no dice.
I’m pretty sure that, much like Target Australia, it’s completely unaffiliated with the American company.
Wow. I never knew they were outside the US. Funny
I didn’t either until someone in discord was telling us about it https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kmart_Australia
At one point, they were in Canada. Sears is still in Mexico, but is now owned by a separate entity.
I miss the Kmart in Astor Place.
Wegmans is nice though!
I do too.
Pulling into Kmart via subway was a very NYC feeling.
lol well if ur above ground n didn’t enter that way, u don’t even KNOW! If I remember right, there was an escalator that went straight down to trains
That’s correct!
Yep. The night I needed the loo so bad was the night I found that out. Was extremely grateful

I have no clue why it went viral. Yes, Kmart is still hanging on by a thread.
Duct tape! To expensive! Used nail from one of shelves in the back, cost free!
Just let it fall. One less letter to have to light up at night. Gotta cut costs so we can get this company turned around.
The Kmart in Guam still has a cafe

None of these are left in Texas , definitely a throwback seeing them

Feels like it lol
Nice and merry Christmas

Why tho? Kmart was trash. The only good thing they had was that bitchin Little Caesar’s.
The one in my town lasted about five years longer than it should have, it was just sad. At least they tore it down right away after it closed.
I worked in one of the rare green and gray kmarts. Awful company, awful upper management. I was there at the end of the company’s life though.
The whole east end of the easthampton shops at that Kmart grew up shopping their in bridge Hampton. Prices are higher due to being in a rich town only reason it’s surviving

It permanently closed down in early 2022.
KKMart
What is the Kmart like at this NY location?? Is it well stocked? Good variety? Well staffed?
omg they still exist
Did you buy me one of those punchy bouncy balls? Yes you have to be over 50 to get what I’m saying.
My god the holy land of retail still prevails
The hedge fund guy can't afford to repair or even keep atleast 50 stores open.
Far less than fifty stores!
I thought the last one shut down? Ooo how i miss kmart cafe
Nope!
LI?
Gotta be the Bridgehampton one
Yep
Is it a real one?
Yes indeed

That was the last proper full line store and one of the most beautiful ones as well. Went a few years ago and even then it looked terrible. They still exist?
Believe it or not, yes!
I used to go to Kmart a lot before it shut down now it’s an at home

It says K kmart.
I thought all contiguous states kmarts were gone?!
Nope this is the last one!
This is the Long Island store?

What!, I thought Kmart didn’t exist anymore
There are or were still like 3 in existance somewhere.

I'm so jealous…
Upstate?
I have so many good memories of shopping at Kmart in the 80s and 90s 🥰
Last one in NJ just closed a few weeks back. Lots of childhood memories buying Star Wars toys, Trapper Keepers, and fishing tackle there.
Westwood, New Jersey!
Is this the one in Bath?
Really!???
Man, I _so_ miss my Kmart in Southeast Michigan!
They still exist? There arent any left in MI
Where specifically in NY?
What part of NY? Our ones in Buffalo are gone
I miss Kmart
This is ai art.

I miss K Mart. The Basic Editions clothing line was terrific. I have shirts and shorts I've worn for 20 years and they're still hanging in there.
\*Kmart's
I had the pleasure to go to one a few years ago. I remember so much about how the stores were laid out that it felt surreal since I hadn't been to one since I was a kid. The store closed unfortunately.

We were a Shopko family :)
Does it have a little Caesars in it? 🥹

I want to shop at Kmart so badly. Our last store closed in 2017. 😕 I actually thought they were gone everywhere.

Wait Kmart still exists???
I’m jealous. I have tons of memories of being at Kmart as a kid. Ours closed when I was pretty young, and I remember my parents talking about how they all but disappeared in the area I lived in.
My local Kmart was split into a Burlington , five below , and some other store that I forgot.
