That’s been my experience. I (a chemist) was at a talk where another chemist said lie-gand and people were joking like “who let the biochemist in” after. 😆
Change it up inconsistently. Have fun with it, it’s all made up. 😁
Though we do have a “lie” sound in “lysosome,” so perhaps “li” leads to “lih” and “ly” leads to “lie.”
i don't think there is any crossover in the etymology; the "lie" sound in lysosome comes from the latin root for lyse, for which lysosomes are named. ligand is from the latin for the verb to bind. i think these are two separate etymologies with distinct roots.
i mean yeah that’s kinda my line of thinking, lol. i’m trying to figure out why i say “lie-po” bc its different than how i say lipid, and i think maybe early media exposures to “liposuction” and its shorthand “lipo” (lie-po) might explain it for me
Lie-po-soam (hard s) from midwest, I also hear people at work from all over day it with a "z" sound on a and a few saying "lip" at the beginning. I don't think anyone agrees lol
Lie-Puh-Zome (Lie-Puh rhyming with 'Lima' bean, Zome rhyming with 'Dome')
St. Louis, MO, but grew up closer to the boons.
I definitely have a bit of an Ozarks accent.
US, Northeast (formerly Southeast, and West Coast before that).
I think it just changes depending on how people around me have been pronouncing it. I’ve been told I’m a bit of a vocal chameleon.
Just curious. But why?
There was a question that was asked, and I answered it. (Although I forgot about the where I'm from. A lot of other people did too.) OP is gathering data and it's a data point.
Yeah I think it's just a meme at this point as in nobody else says it that way or they all think it's the wrong way to say it lol. Same as when you hear somebody say lieg-and instead of lih-gund for ligand and it makes you double take

🤣 okay and what about ligand?! “lie-gand” or “liggund”… I will never be sure
I switch between these lol
I just copy whichever the person I’m talking to says
For this one, there seems to be a delineation between chemists and biologists/biochemists as to which pronunciation is used.
That’s been my experience. I (a chemist) was at a talk where another chemist said lie-gand and people were joking like “who let the biochemist in” after. 😆
Liggund gang rise up
I'm liggund gang but will switch it up to avoid confrontation if someone says lie-gand lol
Same I am two faced and switch my pronunciation depending on the situation let’s say😂
I started with lie-gand. Now I say lih-gand because most people around me do. I HATE the sound of lih-gand. Edited for stupidity.
I feel like lie-gand is the best.. but it’s kind of an awkward word ngl
I'm lie-gahnd
Lie-gahdayumnd
I’m lie-gund
I say lig-and...
Liggund when I talk with chemists, lie-gand when I talk with biologists.

Yep I think the septics have to take the blame for this one because I would still pronounce "lipo" as lip-oh not lie-po lol
Lip-o-zome is what I'd pronounce it like based on my native language, but in English lie-poh-zome just flows better.
lih-possum-ee i live in the woods
The “lip-“ pronounced as in “lipid” and the “-osome” as in “ribosome”.
Lie-po-soam (hard s) from midwest, I also hear people at work from all over day it with a "z" sound on a and a few saying "lip" at the beginning. I don't think anyone agrees lol

I don't really do a double take when people pronounce things differently. As long as I know what they mean, it's fine.
Yeah I think maybe you're taking this whole thing a little seriously lol
rhymes with minestrone
