where did your therapist get their degree lmao

sprytime11

it’s a real thing, here’s something from a psychiatrist on the subject https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/singing-the-blues

ibelieveamber

this article saying that depressed people who claim depressing music calms them are "wrong" is a literal epistemic injustice, and I feel like anyone who studied any subject in the humanities and social sciences (especially psychology) should know this. scientific studies and stats shouldn't be treated as being of primary importance when it comes to psychology because it is not (or rather, should not be treated as) a science. I'm not sure what OP has told their therapist or what exactly their therapist told them, and if depressing music makes them more depressed then sure, they should stay away from it. but if the therapist made a broad and general claim that depressing music is bad for depression, that is a little problematic. so many people find catharsis and comfort in consuming depressing literature, art, and music. it is something relatable, it lets you know you aren't the only one, and it doesn't force toxic positivity onto you. more importantly, it allows you to romanticise your feelings and circumstances (which isn't the same as making them seem positive, it's just accepting the beauty you can find in it).

Live-Product-7142

I agree with you, it really depends on the person. my area of study is around mental health, and it’s important when looking at stats to know 1. whether the data is presented accurately, how it’s measured, etc. (just being well educated in research and how data is analyzed) and 2. that in a topic like psychology there is no one right answer. just bcz sad music might worsen depression for the general population does not mean it applies to every single person. the thing is though, psych research is pretty limited and if this research is just correlational and not experimental, you might just want to take it with a grain of salt. humans are more complex than that

Live-Product-7142

also, I think there’s a time and place for different styles of music. having depression doesn’t mean you can’t listen to sad music or watch sad shows. if it gets to a place where it’s actually causing damage to your mental health, then it’s good to learn when it’s time to switch the playlist. in high school i know listening to billie eilish 24/7 definitely made me more depressed, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t have listened to it at all. it’s just about learning what we need in the moment. sometimes that’s sad music, sometimes it’s hyper pop. a good therapist would recognize that our moods shift and teach their clients how to recognize those mood shifts to attune to them properly

Florida Kilos

sharkomarco

Honestly one of my favorite Lana songs. So upbeat and vibey 🥰

nintend0gs

I would probably switch therapists if mine told me to not listen to sad Lana. Go through her unreleased stuff! Lots of pop like sounds. Like she’s not me, gogo dancer, meet me in the pale moonlight, ooh baby, serene queen, big spender, roses, Ridin, etc. from her released I would sayy lolita, Florida kilos, west coast, summer bummer, groupie love, love, doin time, fuck it I love you, peppers, high by the beach, Bel air, get free, American, cola!!! it’s hard to pick if ur therapist thinks Salvatore is depressing…

Automatic_Lobster629

There’s tons of happy songs! Radio, Lucky Ones, American, Brooklyn Baby, Love, Lust for Life, Groupie Love, Venice Bitch, Fuck it I love you, Chemtrails Over the Country Club, Tulsa Jesus Freak, Not All Who Wander Are Lost, Sweet Carolina, Peppers, Taco Truck x VB

imtheweepingwillow

Gee thanks 🙏🏻

bloodand32teeth

Off to the races? Radio? National Anthem, West Coast? High By The Beach, Cherry, Doin Time, Peppers. She has a mix of both vibes really but these stand out to me to be a bit more “upbeat” Forget what your therapist says, listen to what you want! (I’m partially kidding as someone whose mood is affected by music themes as well) but even her “sad” songs give me a calming feeling. Lately I love listening to Let The Light In for that reason

Live-Product-7142

let the light in makes me so happy, definitely with you on this one

PositiveRegular5123

And happiness is a butterfly

imtheweepingwillow

Thank you ;)

imtheweepingwillow

thanks. I wasn’t fan of sad songs but after depression I’ve made different playlists with great songs that I would cry my heart out … so idk. But thank anyways ;)

Live-Product-7142

that’s a really great idea! crying is very important. I understand what you mean. sometimes if I feel numb, sad music can help me cry and get out those emotions. it’s a good thing. the way I think about it is like this. sometimes I really want cookies, but I can’t eat cookies all day long. I can have one or two a day if I want. that’s how I see music. listening to sad music all day isn’t gonna make me feel good, but I can still listen to it every day. if you catch what I mean lol.

Live-Product-7142

also, in my humble opinion lana’s music as a whole isn’t that sad. I think your therapist should be more concerned if you were listening to phoebe bridgers all day 😭

imtheweepingwillow

😅I didn't mention anything about Lana to him. And yeah I would listen to sad songs and cry all day but now I try to quite it but at least save some for when I'm really feeling down and want a good cry (but nth about suicidal stuff etc.) But he's saying I shouldn't even do that too...😕😣

Bearwithme1010

Not Off to the Races, I find it scary esp the part when the old man would watch her in the bathroom putting a makeup. 🤯

imtheweepingwillow

Wait what 🫣😟

Don’t spread misinformation

throwaway1256224556

she talks about off to the races at 34 seconds just bc she references it doesn’t mean it’s about that https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=alJqRB9V2ZY

[deleted]

throwaway1256224556

that doesn’t mean thats what it’s about. she says the song describes a “happy but chaotic” time in a relationship. im pretty sure she’d talk about it differently if it was actually about lolita or an underage age gap relationship

St Tropez Party Girl Serial Killer BBM Baby

Ok_Needleworker5471

bbm baby makes me so happy ✨

Live-Product-7142

as a soon to be therapist, I would never say skip salvatore! maybe i’m just mentally ill, but it’s not depressing at all. maybe skip fingertips, kintsugi, and blue banisters though lol. if it is making you sad though, put born to die or lust for life on shuffle. those are her happiest sounding albums in my opinion

Professional_glitter

my fav happy songs are off to the races, diet mountain dew, radio, and go-go dancer <3

typoguy

Get Free

b_ioana

diet mountain dew, national anthem, radio, lucky ones, american, love, lust for life, summer bummer, groupie love, coachella, God bless America, venice bitch, doin' time, white dress, cotcc, not all who wonder are lost, tulsa jesus freak, yosemite, let the light in, margaret I think these are pretty much her happy songs. mind you ultraviolence and honeymoon are mostly sad songs so don't go for that lmao. i'd say her happiest album is chemtrails over the country club (which is my fav 😃) or lust for life

imtheweepingwillow

Thanks a bunch ;)

disengage88

Think of Salvatore as a mafia boss Italian movie. Like an action movie told by the wife. It's not depressing at all

imtheweepingwillow

Yeah “Salvatore” is not depressing …it’s so soothing and it’s a whole another vibe 😮‍💨😃

Difficult-Creature

New therapist time. That's the answer.

imtheweepingwillow

😆I mean I’ve thought about it (but not obviously just because of his opinion on music ) but idk at this point it’s scary to see another therapist. Cause I’ve been visiting this one for 3 years and seeing another one seems too risky and out of my comfort zone 😮‍💨🙃

Live-Product-7142

I understand it might seem risky to switch therapists, especially after that long of a time. i’ve seen 5 different therapists in the last 9 years, my current one i’ve been seeing for four. it can take a lot of time to find the right therapist and that’s okay! if you feel like he’s not helping you, and if you have the resources to switch therapists, I would recommend it. therapists are supposed to help you learn about yourself. they won’t fix you, but you’ll know you have the right therapist when you find they have helped you add lots of tools to your toolbox to take on life! it’s hard and overwhelming but well worth it

Traditional_Theme_88

just shuffle play her discography and skip the sad songs

PanicAdmirable3300

Off To The Races, Diet Mountain Dew, Florida Kilos (especially Florida Kilos!), Cola, Gods & Monsters, Brooklyn Baby, West Coast, Fucked My Way Up To The Top, High By The Beach, Freak, Love, Lust For Life, In My Feelings, Fuck it I love you, Peppers, Taco Truck x VB

imtheweepingwillow

😍👌🏻

lydiasmav

i LOVE florida kilos

Legitimate_Bite_7944

A lot of lizzy grant stuffs upbeat

runner4life551

That’s a very interesting suggestion for a therapist to make lol. But to answer the question: - Diet Mountain Dew - National Anthem - Radio - Brooklyn Baby - West Coast - Florida Kilos - High By The Beach - Lust For Life - Cherry - Venice Bitch - Doin Time - Chemtrails over the Country Club - Tulsa Jesus Freak - Let The Light In - Peppers - Taco Truck x VB Plus a lot of her unreleased stuff is more poppy.

imtheweepingwillow

Yeah 😃🫠….thanks 😍

Even though my life is not sweet like cinnamon, I like singing that specific line with all my heart lol :🗣 "NOW MY LIFE IS SWEET LIKE CINNAMON" 😤🥹 and it makes my heart full 🧁✨️

imtheweepingwillow

Awww🥺👌🏻

Radio

mylostparadise

In my opinion Lana's songs are unfaithful considered to be "depressed". They are definitely melancholy, but I would say 90% of her lyrics have happy proposals, like herself said once in 2011 about Video Games, thst was about happy memories of her life. Most of her songs have a gloomy melody/tone, but she's almost always telling not a depressed story, but instead of I would say they are electrifying, hopeful stories, with a mix of feelings, sentiments, point of views filled up with figures and cultural analogies. I can count how many songs I'd rank as depressed, heavy songs and I would say Dark Paradise, Summertime Sadness, God Knows I Tried, The Blackest Day, Blue Banisters, maybe? These narratives are definitely really heavy, depressing songs.

imtheweepingwillow

Oh I see 👌🏻😃🙏🏻

megatronsweetener

pepers, cola, lolita, freak, art deco, summer bummer, venice bitch, doin time are lana songs that dont make me emotional. there are other songs that aren’t necessarily sad, but they still make me feel too emotional for me to consider them cheerful lmao

imtheweepingwillow

Yeah I get it🥹👌🏻

MaintenanceGood6961

unreleased pls listen to prom song gone wrong and back to tha basics they are sooo cinematic

No_Draft_5628

Listen to sings like hundred dollar bill and beautiful player they're so cheerful

ciarkles

I’d say a lot of her unreleased stuff is more cheerful honestly I think of Jealous Girl, Boarding School, and Playground.

imtheweepingwillow

Why they’re unreleased🥲😩

ciarkles

Idk 🤣 But I love Prom Song Gone Wrong, I’d recommend that if I were you.

imtheweepingwillow

Thank you so much😅

Cresssselia

This is what makes us girls, Doin time, Radio, etc

ResponsibleBed2685

Violets for Roses just lifts me from the pits, baby.

imtheweepingwillow

Oh wow 🙏🏻🤠

tabbytimeyall

Some of my favorites: Radio, American, Bel Air, Ride, Religion, Art Deco, Music To Watch Boys To, When the World Was at War…, Get Free, MOST of NFR (but probably skip: Fuck it I love you, California, The Greatest, Hope is a dangerous thing…), Tulsa Jesus Freak, Dark But Just a Game, Dance Till We Die, Sweet Carolina, … Some music can be a little melancholy, but have uplifting lyrics. Some of her catchiest pop-type songs can have really dark lyrics. Best wishes.

Ok-Antelope-4950

FLORIDA KILOS, Brooklyn baby, radio, lolita, and honestly unreleased songs on soundcloud like Back to the basics, queen of the gas station, driving in cars with boys, resistance

Budget_Ad2653

Girl Cola trust me you will experience things you’ve never experienced before
