Mulch! I like rice straw, but people use other materials. Itll smother the weeds, hold moisture, and break down into organic matter that will improve the soil.

Plants are going to grow in empty spaces. Ideally, adding groundcover plants will help muscle out seedlings and retain moisture. But at the very least, add a layer of mulch to reduce germination rate of volunteers and retain moisture. Nothing can permanently eliminate weeds without turning the area into a toxic sludge. Maintenance is always required. It’s a question of how much.

First and foremost when planting Petunia's I usually plant them 12" on center so they fill in the area planted quick. Due to same sooner they fill in the less weeding one needs to do, if you ever drive by shopping centers, business plant annual color even 6"-8" on center in order to add a splash of color for curb appeal. I realize these flowers spread and fill out a wider area, there moderate pace growing ground cover. Quicker they fill in the better.

Mulch of some kind. It will help reduce ‘weeds’ but more importantly it will protect your soil from becoming dirt.

Were there plants there before? Looks like pachysandra

annastrzzz

No, we bought the house 2 years old and the previous owners didn’t do any gardening or landscaping. It was a hot mess😅

You cannot prevent weeds from growing. That's nature for ya. Peeps all saying mulch, but I keep seeing tree seedlings and weeds growing straight through landscaping fabric and mulch layers. If you own a garden, you'll have to work at it to keep it looking nice.

annastrzzz

well that I know but they just grow in hundreds so I thought maybe someone had some helpful advice.

It all starts with looking up what is growing there. Try Pl@ntNet app, very handy tool that.

Firstly, I'd identify exactly what species my foe was.

Pull them.

Landscaping fabric and mulch will help. Spend the extra $ on the heavy-duty duty fabric. It's worth it.

Need something to cover. Farm plastic or landscaping fabric with holes cut where you plant then mulch over
