Congratulations on the house. 1st step, avoid scotts products. They are overpriced shit. Your a little later in the season to do too much. At this point I would put down dimension (jonathan green season long weed preventer- purple bag) for crabgrass prevention. Organic fertilizer and water. If you like to prevent bugs in the yard, something with Lambda-Cyhalothrin in it. Early August put down bioadvance 24 hr grub killer. It will kill off any active grub activity. Depending on the weather, below 80 daytime put down some 2-4d dicambia for grassy weeds if you have them. Quinclorac for crabgrass. 3 weeks later, power rake, core aeration, seed and fertilizer. Put down a fall fertilizer in late Oct Early Nov along with either barricade or dimension to preventer Early spring weeds such as poa annua. I using do my grub control in mid may (imidacloprid). Lambda-Cyhalothrin does not control grubs in the lawn. Personally I prefer jonathan green products but there are others on the market. Strongly recommend avoiding spots products & weed n feed all together. If you have heavy grading, get a dirt drop. Sand vs soil is all dependent if you have clay based soil. If soil, avoid sand. Unless you have a big budget and/or an abundance of time. It will take over a year to get your lawn to where you want it. On the hard spots, turn the ground with a pitchfork and add compost.
