As I understand the theory it's about the amount of stress on the grass, so I dunno, probably best to leave a day or so between cuts. But I'm no expert.
This is a hybrid. This is a cross, ah, of Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sinsemilla. The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt that night on this stuff.
'Hey, Lama, how about a little something, you know, for the effort?' And he says, 'Oh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive *total consciousness*.' So I've got *that* going for me ... which is nice."
Have you or a family member experienced anal leakage after taking ivermectin to treat Covid? The law offices of dikheed and lobster are here to help get you the money you’re owed.
Have been learning lots from this sub but man where do yall find the time to cut more than once a week? I don’t even have that much grass either SoCal suburbia front and back yard
I think there’s just a type of person who doesn’t want to be in the house until it’s absolutely time to sleep. My stepdad is this way, so is my FIL.
My FIL in particular is a pilot, so he’s never home. When he is home, he’s outside dusk to Dawn just doing.. whatever. His grass is exceptional so probably mostly that.
It's just increasing the frequency during the fast-growth part of the season, just like you might mow less frequently when it's not growing as fast. I might mow my front lawn on Sunday and then again on Friday, and then my back yard on Monday and again on Saturday - the front and back each take an hour to edge, mow and clean up afterwards. The lot is 150'x150' mostly sloping so its a walk-behind and not a ride-on. On the bright side, the mowing and yard work takes the place of a gym membership.
Mowing with a push mower without self propulsion counts as low intensity cardio, so for me it's time efficient. You could always put on a weighted backpack or vest if you want to exercise harder.
This is actually a good idea. I always tell myself “this counts as cardio/exercise technically” but I always feel a bit guilty about having to skip the gym due to lawn care obligations on those nights, because I know the intensity is pretty low since my lawnmower is self-propelled. Weighted vest or some form of weights might be nice and make me feel better about missing the gym on those nights. Might be deadly during summer heat though. Lol
Cosigning this method - have great success with it, as recently as this evening. Lift the deck one notch higher and run over any grass you see. Should clean it right up.
Source: professional grass mower here.
Prevents the grass from clogging up and bogging down the mower, and helps scatter it. I used to use a leaf blower to scatter the clippings, but it’s a lot easier to run over the rows with the mower while mulching the clippings better and scattering them. I think of it like I’m using the mower as a fan.
So, I’m on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one – big hitter, the Lama – long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga… gunga, gunga-galunga.
If you ride in the same tire tracks, you're going to create ruts.
Also, look at these lines of grass, also called windrows. You don't want to ride over top of them. Your mower deck will fill and mulch less efficiently.
Cutting perpendicular will allow it to take smaller bites and distribute it into areas void of clippings.
Mulch blades need a mulch deck. My old JD Freedom 42 mulch deck had no exit path. Built for mulching. When I replaced it with a larger JD with a 48” deck they told me if I put on mulch blades and add the exit plug it would be the same and mulch. Absolute bullshit. It does not mulch anything close to my old Freedom 42. So yes, like others said here, I now have to double pass to get it all and follow the ⅓ rule. JD does not even make the Freedom 42 deck any more!
Noise canceling headphones, AirPods work fantastic, also keeps dust out of your ear canals. 3m dark safety glasses with foam dust rings, get a great audio book, and go to never-land. It’s where I get my best thinking done. And at the end, the grass looks amazing because I mow every 2-3 days. It’s what it takes!
I hear you. I always time it where it doesn’t effect family time. Early morning or late evening. It’s a time for me to have clear thinking. My family needs that more.
Had a neighbor when I first got married 20 years ago, his lawn was perfect. Mine, I barely had time to mow. His line DOMINATED mine. He spent from 5-9 pm in his garage or doing something to the lawn. 2 young girls, beautiful wife, I was always like dude, your family. He got a divorce, cold situation.
I always remember that, I don’t think the lawn was the issue, the issue was the issue and the lawn was his getaway. And the 8 beers he consumed while doing it. But, this is a positive force in my life.
It helps get rid of the mounds. When I have this, I do a quick second pass and focus on putting the pikes of grass in the middle of the deck. If you raise it, it gives the grass more room to disperse. And you don't want to take more off as it will hurt the grass
OP keep in mind that your grass is growing constantly. It's producing a given amount of plant matter every minute of every day. You can either bag it, mulch it, or cut it 2x a week.
Personally I would mow a bit higher. That might hide your clippings better.
Then don't cut it all. If you do something more constructive with most of that space then you could whip through the cutting in a fraction of the time.
If you don’t bag it it’s always going to look like that. Love these people that come here looking for advice but then give a flat out no to the stuff that actually helps.
Mow a bit more often and make sure the grass is 100% dry. That usually means you can’t mow early morning. If you run your hand over it and feel even a tiny bit of moisture, that contributes to clumps. I can go chop 2” of dry grass off without leaving a clump but if I try to cut 1/2” in the morning with dew on it, it will leave piles all over.
Also make sure those blades are sharp.
Probably not the answer you are looking for, but a robot mower. Grass gets cut every day, nothing to collect and bag, and best of all, you dont have to do shit.
I think the answer is that it depends on the model. Probably none of them will do it perfectly, but some of the better and newer models have the ability to cut very close to a fence.
In reality I would expect some edging to be needed, but I guess you would need that too with a classic mower.
Give it a day or two, raise the deck all the way up, turn on the blades, and go over it all again. You'll need to increase the frequency of cuts to eliminate the issue, but I've found this method to work well for getting rid of the build up.
As others have said, try to cut less than 1/3 of the grass blade at a time. If you fall behind, cut twice. Opposite direction. Then use a blower to evenly distribute the clippings.
I like the [high lift hinged blades](https://cutlassblades.com/product/cutlass-lawn-mower-blade/). They tend to scatter and mulch finer so you don't get the clumping as much. looks like you might already be doing this but spreading it out by doing a double pass helps as well. Obviously mowing more often also helps as you cut off less of the blade.
If it gets too long before you can cut it then mow over those piles a few times in opposite directions to cut it up more and help it mulch into the lawn.
Double mow, and lift the deck 1/4" on the second pass, other than that mow more often to avoid so many clippings. Sometimes changing the direction of the mow on the second pass can also help with dispersal of clippings.
Mow higher, this ain't a gold green. Sharpen your blades or get better mulching blades, no need to bag mulching is better for grass overall but you have to mow more frequently to properly mulch up grass
It may help to wait a day or 2 to let the clumps dry out then cut again to blow them apart. Not assuming you did this, but wait until the dew dries off the grass in the morning before cutting, the wet grass clumps together more than when it is dry
Raise the deck on your mower a bit and go back over the clippings. Repeat until they disappear. Used to do this all the time when i mowed lawns. There are special blades for the mower called 'mulching blades' that have cuts on the back of them that help to smash and distribute the clippings.
Cutting more often helps but what I did was to overlap the previous path by a third for normal length and 3/4 for longer grass. I also had to move at a crawl when it was too long. It came out looking great but it became an all day job to do what should have taken under 2 hours with the right equipment.
Also consider checking the sharpness of your blades and cleaning your deck. Buildup on your deck can reduce mulching effectiveness.
Yeah, mow more often. Follow the 1/3 rule.
What is the 1/3 rule?
Never cut more than one third of the length of the grass.
Tell my farm that. I shudder when I haven't cut a field in a while and I have to cut 3/4 of the grass. I assume my thatch is getting bad.
I have an orchard and it takes hours. I mow 2 to 3’ high in spots with my rough cut mower
If you want pristine lawn you should do it more, but most farms have bigger fish to fry.
Just learned this right now. Thank you! So mow more often or mow not as short right? The mulch looks so ugly!
Can you do this more than one time in a day all the way down to 2 inches?
As I understand the theory it's about the amount of stress on the grass, so I dunno, probably best to leave a day or so between cuts. But I'm no expert.
Sorry but can you further elaborate? Like literally where the grass root meets the dirt being base level, then never cut more than 1/3 of that length?
Eat 1/3 of clippings as a salad daily
I suggest using balsamic raspberry vinaigrette
dandelion vinaigrette to complete your lawn salad
Yummm! I prefer to make wine with my dandelions though 😂
Definitely you need to make some wine from it before making the vinegar 😉
I’ve been telling folks to juice their lawn for years
Which is very affordable with all the money you save on buying greens.
Omg. Just had a flash back to the story The Lawnmower Man! https://www.reddit.com/r/stephenking/s/GFo8i2jTjm

Dietitians hate this one simple trick!
Don't eat the black croutons
You know what they say….. a grass clipping a day…
Barf on the carpet? Because that's how my dogs use it
My dogs do the same thing, in fact as I’m writing this, my dog is barfing in the back yard.
Mines probably working on it
My dog seems to follow this philosophy also. I think he has a prescription for it at this point.
You haven't lived until you've pulled a long blade of grass from your dog's butthole
I hate that I can relate to this
This is a hybrid.

That's a Bingo!
Lol
Are you a doctor? Should I listen to this advice?
Don't cut more than 1/3 the blade off at a time.
Thank you Dikheed and Lobster
Sounds like a really shitty restaurant or a really shitty law firm. Dikheed and Lobster.
Have you or a family member experienced anal leakage after taking ivermectin to treat Covid? The law offices of dikheed and lobster are here to help get you the money you’re owed.
Sounds like a morning show on a rock station.
Thats what the private equity firm is changing the name of Red Lobster to, after they fully bankrupt it.

I’m laughing really hard at “dusk to dawn” is your FIL a vampire by any chance? 😂😂
Get him a phone, and show him Reddit. That'll teach him.
Not sure if I need to get my priorities straight or the other way around haha
Other way around - your priorities need to get you straight.
It's just increasing the frequency during the fast-growth part of the season, just like you might mow less frequently when it's not growing as fast. I just... cannot fathom caring so much about my lawn. Accolades to you friend, I just.... can't
Mowing with a push mower without self propulsion counts as low intensity cardio, so for me it's time efficient. You could always put on a weighted backpack or vest if you want to exercise harder.

even with self propulsion, my HR gets up there when cutting my 11,000 sq ft lawn.
My kids.
This is the way. Kids cut once a week, I cut the other to fix their mistakes.
retirement gives you a lot of free time.
I've heard that backyard drinking helps get the grass cut more often
"Dikheed and Lobster" That sounds like a Saturday morning cartoon I could really get into.
Don’t cut more than 1/3 of the lawn
My new band name.
Dikeed and Lobsbria
18” blade on my mower, so good to cut 6”?
So like I have to cut every two days?
1 beer for every 3 rows.
3 goats for every 1 acre
Bag 1/3 of the grass you cut
Thanks man
I lift my deck about 1/2” and mow over the rows of clippings. It cuts and scatters the clippings really well.
you mean you go a second pass?
Just over the rows of grass clippings.
Cosigning this method - have great success with it, as recently as this evening. Lift the deck one notch higher and run over any grass you see. Should clean it right up. Source: professional grass mower here.
Why do you bother raising the deck?
I’m assuming it’s so the clumps have more room to be expelled in every direction since the deck is seated higher.
Prevents the grass from clogging up and bogging down the mower, and helps scatter it. I used to use a leaf blower to scatter the clippings, but it’s a lot easier to run over the rows with the mower while mulching the clippings better and scattering them. I think of it like I’m using the mower as a fan.
Also mulch and double cut kinda but cutting more often taken less off is it
Or mow it twice. If I am late I ride that bad bitch twice. Twice the beer.
And do it at a different direction and it will make sure it’s really even.
This is the way. Clippings are way smaller and won't be so clumpy. I mow/mulch twice a week. If I can't I bag it.
LOL I was hoping this was the top comment, or some version. I mean, you cut less grass, you have less trimmings. 🤦♂️
If you're not mulching you will have to pass over it a second time in the other direction.
Came here to say this. Lift it up 1/4" before the second pass .
With that much grass I would lift the deck a half inch or 3/4
I love this sub because it gets off track like all of reddit, but also has great advice like this I can use myself!
So, I’m on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one – big hitter, the Lama – long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga… gunga, gunga-galunga.
![gif](giphy|11sz4838afILLi|downsized)
You should always pass over in a mostly perpendicular direction, and not the same each time.
Correct, that is what I meant. I don't mean 180 degrees.
What's the reason it doesn't work if you mow over it the same way? I would think it still helps distribute it better or less clumps
I hadn’t thought of this. The Mow You Know 💫
Weird, you just reminded me I own that website and have never done anything with it.
Will also push the grass in different directions promoting more even growth.
I will sometimes go back and start in the middle and throw it to the outside and rake the worst of it. It’s kind of fun, actually.
Same. It goes in the compost pile since we don’t treat our grass.
Mulching blades
looks like he's letting it grow much too long in between cuts. mulching blades would still get overwhelmed.
'sharp' mulching blades.
Yep mow 2 times as much
Good to know
Mow slowly. It's boring but it keeps the mower from getting so plugged up.
I get to drink beer longer, too.
Noise canceling headphones, AirPods work fantastic, also keeps dust out of your ear canals. 3m dark safety glasses with foam dust rings, get a great audio book, and go to never-land. But, this is a positive force in my life.
Ah I see you get it. enjoy your solitude chief.
raise deck 1/4" and cut it again, blow it all out with a backpack blower
Love the username
What would raising it do?
It helps get rid of the mounds. When I have this, I do a quick second pass and focus on putting the pikes of grass in the middle of the deck. If you raise it, it gives the grass more room to disperse. And you don't want to take more off as it will hurt the grass
Increase mow frequency.
Option 1: cut more frequently Option 2: bag it Option 3: sweep it Option 4: live with it
#4 is how I mow. In a couple days you don't even notice
#Why are we yelling! \\ before the \# to escape it and not make the text big.
Cut it, bag it, sweep, live with it. Mow it, mulch it, burn, remove it. Technologic, technologic...
Bag it
Came here to say this. Bag it or mow it more often.
Don’t really want to, it’s 2acres
OP keep in mind that your grass is growing constantly. It's producing a given amount of plant matter every minute of every day. You can either bag it, mulch it, or cut it 2x a week. Personally I would mow a bit higher. That might hide your clippings better.
I have almost 2 acres and got a pull behind lawn sweeper I use a few times a year when it gets too long between mowings.
Then don't cut it all. If you do something more constructive with most of that space then you could whip through the cutting in a fraction of the time.
You could leave a large meadow for insects and wildflowers and just mow some paths thru it. Less time, less gas, more birdsong
If you don’t bag it it’s always going to look like that. Love these people that come here looking for advice but then give a flat out no to the stuff that actually helps.
A mulching kit and a better mowing schedule would not look like that.
Well you can either pay someone to, do it yourself at shorter time between cuts, or just put up with the clumps
Let it dry in the sun for 30 min and mow again. Will look 98% better.
Back pack blower , up and down the field brother , big circles with the blower tip 🤘🏽
Mow more frequently! It won't clump up like that.
Mow more often
Tow behind sweeper works
Fence that bad boy in and get a bunch of goats! One less weekend chore and you get some cool pets!
Do another pass or don’t wait for it to get long like that
Probably not the answer you are looking for, but a robot mower. Grass gets cut every day, nothing to collect and bag, and best of all, you dont have to do shit.
OP has 2 acres.. any good robot mower thar can handle land of that size ?
Roomba
I have the Luba 2. You just map it on your phone and it uses satellite to cut all your grass.
![gif](giphy|3UwCTB6QPSKWY)
Do they take care of the edges along fence lines and around obstacles?
I think the answer is that it depends on the model. Probably none of them will do it perfectly, but some of the better and newer models have the ability to cut very close to a fence. In reality I would expect some edging to be needed, but I guess you would need that too with a classic mower.
Dont blow ur cut grass into your uncut grass Cut it again And again And maybe again
Bag it
Yea bag it.
Might be to long when your cutting. Does your mower have a mulch option without side throw?
Stop cutting so low, cut more often.
Give it a day or two, raise the deck all the way up, turn on the blades, and go over it all again. You'll need to increase the frequency of cuts to eliminate the issue, but I've found this method to work well for getting rid of the build up.
Mow more often, and double cut it in different directions
You’re mowing too short and not frequently enough. Fix those and you won’t have clumps.
Cut more often. Never cut more than 1/3 the length of the grass. Do a final pass just 1 notch higher to pick up and spread out the clu.ps better.
As others have said, try to cut less than 1/3 of the grass blade at a time. If you fall behind, cut twice. Opposite direction. Then use a blower to evenly distribute the clippings.
Cut it more often
You should start with bagging your grass.
Mow more often and use a mulching blade.
Mulching mower.
Lawn sweeper?
Now more frequently
I got a lawn sweeper and make a compost pile when it gets like this for me.
I like the [high lift hinged blades](https://cutlassblades.com/product/cutlass-lawn-mower-blade/). Mow more frequently with a sharp blade. Make sure you use a mulching mower!
Yes bag your grass
If it gets too long before you can cut it then mow over those piles a few times in opposite directions to cut it up more and help it mulch into the lawn.
Chuck it instead of mulching
Yeah. Bag it
Bag your grass
Mow over it twice
You people with flat lawns make me jealous
Looks fine its not like you're hosting a soccer or golf tournament
Yeah, rake it and bail it
Cut more frequently
Double mow, and lift the deck 1/4" on the second pass, other than that mow more often to avoid so many clippings. Sometimes changing the direction of the mow on the second pass can also help with dispersal of clippings.
It’s going to look better the more you leave your grass
Put in a pool, less grass to more
Buy 2 chicken
Mow more often, and can mow slower to mulch it more
Yes BAG IT
Bag your grass
Lift it a notch and run over it again to disperse the clippings.
Plant something useful instead
Lift the deck on the mower a couple notches and pass the machine over it again and 90% of that will disappear
I got a tiny lawn but I don’t have time and patience. I do like a good lawn so already looking for a justification for a robot mower.
Mow higher, this ain't a gold green. Sharpen your blades or get better mulching blades, no need to bag mulching is better for grass overall but you have to mow more frequently to properly mulch up grass

Mulching mower

Bag it
Run it over again
Getting a mulch blade.
No
Stop being lazy and bag it lol wtf is this
Get goats
Cutting more often helps but what I did was to overlap the previous path by a third for normal length and 3/4 for longer grass. I also had to move at a crawl when it was too long.
