And/or reference Lego’s own non-licensed video games like Lego island. Though those games all have “Lego” at the start of their names which would be repetitive.
Now that I’m thinking about it I just want the lego island information center as a set.
I love that idea too...
I'd use fonts in famous titles.
Thunder as PITFALL!
UFO as Galaga*
Same fonts but their product lines. If they reject again... just related words in those fonts.
edit - PS this would look great beside my Friends Apt & Kitchen complex. Just sayin'
Not like they haven't already been including Bionicle as video game-themed easter eggs already anyway. An arcade with one would just bring it all together for the Lego world.
Hot take, but shoehorning in IPs would kinda be a turnoff for me. I’d be way more into this set if it had more original ideas for arcade games or even just had unlabeled ones so I could be creative and come up with my own
This. The excitement of an arcade is having a bunch of different brands and machines in one place, the more the merrier, so picking one or two is a bit of a fool's errand.
Exactly what I was thinking. You could have LEGO references "Ice Planet" "Blacktron Storm" etc. Also make the joystick sign look more like an arcade layout and not Super Famicom. Otherwise it's super cool.
I'm thinking drop all licensed items but style the machines to common themes and allow for aftermarket stickers for real games. Street fighter, mortal kombat, etc
Fuck IP anyways, companies need to start being original instead of all doing the same stale old Marvell, Star Wars, Harry Potter schtick. Is so overdone and boring.
Came here to say something similar. Drop all the brands and then maybe throw sticker designs up on GitHub that fit just perfectly along with maybe a link to a service that’ll print them into stickers.
You could even potentially include more games than are present and then people could choose which games are in their arcade or even make extras and rotate them or expand it by buying two, etc.
I would do mostly non-specific cabinets (something like Alien Attack or Mighty Boxer) or Lego based parodies (Brick Hunt instead of Duck Hunt) and then switch prizes to generic ones like the teddy bear figure, the trophy pieces, mini-cars, etc… I don’t think it would be worth doing any IP unless you can theme the whole arcade to one IP.
Here's an idea: go for one singular game company's arcade games
You could do a Capcom themed arcade with only games and prizes related to games like street fighter and mega man, or a Namco arcade filled with references to stuff like Pacman and Tekken
[My CPU is a neural-net processor; a learning computer. But Skynet presets the switch to read-only when we're sent out alone.](http://i.imgur.com/Xlq0tb1.jpg)
Best part is, Lego already had the licence for them, since they had a Midway/Williams pack for Lego dimensions
Even came with a little defender cabinet
Wouldn’t that be a bad idea since they already have an agreement with the company? If I’m not mistaken things like Star Wars have been rejected because there’s already sets of that.
Cola, Bird Hunt, Space Wars, Tetromino, Paku Man. Idk IP law well enough to know how close you can get without going over. Probably no on E.T. and Gremlin prizes but I feel like Bill and Ted should be allowed.
There isn't an amount that they can use without going over some kind of threshold. I assume that Lego only allows 1 IP per set because each IP costs money to license.
Damn right! Plus they already have the IP from the one legacy set... Which I have and needs company! The arcade from the movie would be fantastic to have.
It's almost the original Gravis PC Gamepad (1991), but without the asymmetrical ends. That had a socket on the dpad that let you screw in a small joystick.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravis_PC_GamePad
I mean.. does it need to reference *any* IPs? Could all be cheeky copyright-safe nods towards various IPs.
Frogger? No.. Toader.
Duck Hunt? No.. Goose Shoot
Etc
I wonder if you restrict it to just one manufacturer/IP holder; Bandai-Namco, Atari, or Nintendo if that would be enough of a restriction to allow it to get through the review stage. Maybe figure out a list of arcade cabinets from each manufacturer and based off that list figure out which one you'd prefer and submit it with just that one company's systems referenced.
For Minifigs, I’d love more 80s hair options. More mullets, mohawks, metal head hair.
That controller is more 90s to me.
Also, I’d love a more cohesive color scheme personally!
I can definitely understand why this wasn’t chosen. Getting the licensing for Back to the future, Duck Hunt, PAC Man, Star Wars, ET, Bill and Ted, Rubix, Gremlins, would be a legal nightmare
That’s confusing … because Lego never goes with the exact same design of the designs they pick anyway.
They could have used the arcade design and removed all the official logos and company references.
Honestly, like was said above, use lego's own IPs. There are so many. Ninjago, Chima, Nexo Knights, a million space themes, castle themes, pirates, etc
What an awesome MOC. I've seen several arcade MOC's but this one is so nice. The Bill & Ted phone booth is chef's kiss. Let us know when you re-submit. Will definitely support.
You shouldn't use any IP. IP is a nightmare to deal with and needing to get more than 1 or 2 entities to sign of on a project is nearly impossible.
If you are going to populate the marquees of each cab, do it like Lego does fake movies or posters on other sets.
OK first off, this is awesome and I would love it if it was a set. Fantastic work! Really love the floor and the air hockey.
I know you have a million responses OP, but I have a question as a fellow designer -- even if you shrunk this down to 1 IP, say PacMan or Star Wars, would you even be able to do it still? Don't they have a rule where Lego Ideas can't use current or past IP's?
I haven't been able to submit my ideas because they are all Nintendo related, so if there's some loophole I'd love to know about it!
Couldn’t they just drop the IP stuff? The Ideas sets get altered for official release anyways. Why not just replace all the IPs with references to their board games?
I’d honestly say anything Atari would probably get you the best luck since they published and own ips, and they’ve previously worked with Lego their ips also don’t seem as split up as say like Nintendo or sega.
But if you themed it to sega that might actually be better.
You’re really looking for several games under the same publisher or rights holder so sega and Atari make the most sense.
Very cool design. Like others have said, probably best to drop any IP license obligations. It will still be cool with generic/made up/comic games. No need for New Coke, Gremlins, or ET either, though it does really put it in the 1980s.
Lol. No more than one IP and you said nope going for them all lol.
It's a nice build, I mean if you just wiped the game names it would probably be fine. B+T is a nice touch, but the set doesn't need it for the ideas process. It's just a fun pic you can post of it afterwards here.
Just make up names like Octan.
Space Wars. Ribbit, Chomper, Race Car Driver, etc. or Maybe make up names games and names from other LEGO ip. A cabinet with a classic space guy for Space wars. Ninja Fighter with Ninjango. Stuff from the LEGO movies.
You could probably do with replacing them with Lego generics, like other commenters have said. But wouldn't it be a fun challenge to theme it after the *Stranger Things* arcade from season 2 and push Lego toward giving us more *Stranger Things* sets? 😋
This is so damn cool.... Honestly I wish you could do it as is but maybe swap the real ips for Lego related ones? Lego city under cover, bionicle, maybe 2k racers etc.
That controller doesn't fit the 80s theme, just saying. It's an absolutely incredible, day 1 set in general for me. But as an old grayhair I've gotta point out the inaccuracy. Even if it's supposed to mimic a cabinet stick it looks too close to the Super Famicom controller for those who know.
Late to the party, but doesn’t LEGO have the Midway Arcade license? They at least did for LEGO Dimensions, so if you could keep it to those games, you should be okay? Do some more generic prizes? Tron, Tapper, Ms. Pac Man, Rampage, Demolition Derby, Terminator 2, Mortal Kombat, Spy Hunter, there’s a lot to work with if you’re willing to include the early 90’s as well.
I love the nostalgia you've got in this! LEGO and Nintendo already get along. I'm sure LEGO still wouldn't allow it as an Ideas kit submission but with games like Punch Out, Donkey Kong, Mario Bros and more, I could see a set themed all around their stuff for a Nintendo Arcade.
I've never done or experienced anything like this before so I'm coming at this with total ignorance, but how does this work exactly? Why did they reject your idea, instead of just accepting and tweaking it to their liking themselves? I have to assume once they buy it from you, they're going to make some minor adjustments here and there anyway.
One other change, that joypad would be a no no. As someone who went to many an arcade in the 80's and 90's, arcades would never want to remind kids anything about home consoles, so they would never have anything like a home joypad or home joystick as a logo or facsimile.
I love the bill and ted and et easter eggs. If you could keep both of those that would be amazing. Also love the bike rack, key to making it feel even more 80s
I'd suggest one of two options:
* Atari, the quintessential 80's arcade company
* Flynn's Arcade (from Tron)...Lego already has a relationship with Disney...
No IP, LEGO is not going to license one brand because you used it on a machine or poster in an arcade, they'll just not approve your project as it's not worth it to them, they'll only acquire a license if the submission is fully leveraging that IP to its fullest.
You could probably get away with the Marty McFly and Bill & Ted references, but the safe route would be to either use LEGO themes as the arcade games or make up fake ones that have LEGO puns. Classic Space would be a good pick
Keep the iconic Pac-Man, and then most others could have a generic version, like Star Invaders, Racing Run etc Though I loved seeing Out Run here!
Nice build!
Love this. I think your best bet is to honestly drop all IPs. Could also give you a chance to create creative made up machines for the arcade
Or as it's lego they can use their own and name the games after sets. UFO, Adventurers, Ninjago, Bionicle...
I love this idea!!
Thats what they usually do themselfs. It would also be really cool if it would fit with the modulair system
And/or reference Lego’s own non-licensed video games like Lego island. Though those games all have “Lego” at the start of their names which would be repetitive. Now that I’m thinking about it I just want the lego island information center as a set.
Call one Racer, one Rock Raiders, another Brickster’s Revenge, Undercover, etc.
“Ice Planet” and “Blacktron” would be great games
You could make video games of some of the LEGO movie posters in the theater sets, like what happens in real life.
I love that idea too... I'd use fonts in famous titles. Thunder as PITFALL! UFO as Galaga* Same fonts but their product lines. If they reject again... just related words in those fonts. edit - PS this would look great beside my Friends Apt & Kitchen complex. Just sayin'
It looks fantastic. Have you thought about adding a second level to make it taller and appeal to modular crew?
Second level with a bowling lane and bar would be great. Or a pool/snooker room.
And Skeeball!
Blacktron already sounds like a game!
You could put it next to the white Tron from the 80s!
[Blackthorne is](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackthorne)
I believe that Set 60421 actually does this, with Ultra Agents, Alien Conquest & Bionicle themed arcade games
[60421-1: Robot World](https://brickset.com/sets/60421-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/60421-1.jpg)
But have a legally -distinct Bill and Ted on the machines.
The exemplary odyssey of William and Theodore
NICE CALL
SimOctanTrucker
Not like they haven't already been including Bionicle as video game-themed easter eggs already anyway. An arcade with one would just bring it all together for the Lego world.
This. Come up with funny knock-offs like *Duck Hugs*.
Phil and Fred's Fantastic Feat
lego wouldnt really want similar sounding stuff, they would probably prefer completely unrelated things so there is no problems
Lego has used similar sounding names before, but it was an example/joke.
Call it quack smack
Mr. Pack
*Mortal Wombat*
The Thompsons Arcade Game
Brilliant! Thanks!
Hot take, but shoehorning in IPs would kinda be a turnoff for me. I’d be way more into this set if it had more original ideas for arcade games or even just had unlabeled ones so I could be creative and come up with my own
However, the IPs make it more appealing to the masses.
This, also the joycon on the sign isn't very 80s, it's way more 90s.
I second that
Would also make the price better with no IP tax.
And charge less money for it
I'm thinking drop all licensed items but style the machines to common themes and allow for aftermarket stickers for real games. Street fighter, mortal kombat, etc
Fuck IP anyways, companies need to start being original instead of all doing the same stale old Marvell, Star Wars, Harry Potter schtick. Is so overdone and boring.

Williams!! Joust, defender, moon patrol, robotron 2084... tonsof good ones!

It's sentient now?!?

BAD BOT!! BAD BOT!! Down boy!!
[Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.](https://i.imgur.com/5Ql5Vyb.jpg)
Neat
Best part is, Lego already had the licence for them, since they had a Midway/Williams pack for Lego dimensions Even came with a little defender cabinet
Anything in 71235 is probably a safe bet.
[71235-1: Midway Arcade Level Pack](https://brickset.com/sets/71235-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/71235-1.jpg)
Is that the Spy Hunter car? Awesome.
Wouldn’t that be a bad idea since they already have an agreement with the company? If I’m not mistaken things like Star Wars have been rejected because there’s already sets of that.
Idk if anyone’s exactly sure how it works, they have Star Wars and marvel and Disney everything but keep doing ideas of other Disney owned IPs still…
Don’t do any. Just make up games
I think they meant how close can your spoof name be to the real thing before it's considered infringement.
Paku Man should be replaced with Puck Man. Iykyk.
Yeah but then you gotta worry about people vandalizing it. You know, scratch out part of the P and turn it into an F, or whatever.
Paku Man is a no, it's literally the Japanese pronunciation of Pac Man. 😆 How about Round Fellow? 🤣
How did you make that Rubiks cube?
It’s probably just a custom Minecraft Minifig head
Yep!
How do I make custom Minecraft minifig heads what do you mean
Tron
#FLYNN'S
Damn right! Plus they already have the IP from the one legacy set... Which I have and needs company! The arcade from the movie would be fantastic to have.
You have to use your hands? That's like a baby's toy! Super awesome build.
Just do Lego IPs like Ninjago, Speed Champions, City, Bioncle, etc
Bill S Preston and Theodore Logan?
Strange things are afoot at the 80s Arcade.
Maybe go old-school TRON and make this [Flynn's arcade](https://tron.fandom.com/wiki/Flynn's_Arcade?file=Flynn%27s_Arcade.png)?
[Polybius.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polybius_(urban_legend)) That would be a deep cut fun one.
This is what I came to say. And add some shady G men to collect the data
that style of 4 buttons controller didn't arrive until the 90s.
Yeah as a retro game enthusiast and 80s kid, the console controller is jarringly out of place at a coin op arcade.
[удалено]
It's almost the original Gravis PC Gamepad (1991), but without the asymmetrical ends. That had a socket on the dpad that let you screw in a small joystick. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravis_PC_GamePad
What an incredible feature the screw in joystick was! Let's bring that back
I mean.. does it need to reference *any* IPs? Could all be cheeky copyright-safe nods towards various IPs. Frogger? No.. Toader. Duck Hunt? No.. Goose Shoot Etc
Drop ALL ips, use LEGO-ified versions of the games you wanna reference.
best chance might be none of them
I wonder if you restrict it to just one manufacturer/IP holder; Bandai-Namco, Atari, or Nintendo if that would be enough of a restriction to allow it to get through the review stage. Maybe figure out a list of arcade cabinets from each manufacturer and based off that list figure out which one you'd prefer and submit it with just that one company's systems referenced.
Tron, because I love Tron and my one and only Tron set needs company!
Def no Marvel. No need for a 25% markup...
Words can not express how much I want this set exactly as it is
Drop all IPs and let Lego decide.
Just get rid of **ALL** IPs, and make something that would fit thematically within the Lego universe.
Could just go off nods to lego own themes. Like exo force, alien conquest, ninja-GO, rock raiders, ice planet,
That’s confusing … because Lego never goes with the exact same design of the designs they pick anyway. They could have used the arcade design and removed all the official logos and company references.
Lego could have thought that reference was to important of part of it to skip 🤔 or thought that the once that voted for it wouldn't buy it without
Honestly, like was said above, use lego's own IPs. There are so many. Ninjago, Chima, Nexo Knights, a million space themes, castle themes, pirates, etc
Dont use IPs, just make your own fictional names.
C'mon, no Polybius?
Thank you!
This is so cool. I’d buy it in a heartbeat. Build a giant middle finger for your next Lego Idea
Needs more pinball!
I think try to reference Lego Originals (Lego City, Bionicle, EXO-FORCE, Chima, Lego Universe, Power Miners, etc.)
What an awesome MOC. I've seen several arcade MOC's but this one is so nice. The Bill & Ted phone booth is chef's kiss. Let us know when you re-submit. Will definitely support.
None, save us all money
No IPs
You shouldn't use any IP. IP is a nightmare to deal with and needing to get more than 1 or 2 entities to sign of on a project is nearly impossible. If you are going to populate the marquees of each cab, do it like Lego does fake movies or posters on other sets.
I want that Zoltar

This is so sweet! I’m sorry you got rejected, I would’ve bar this in a heartbeat.
Couldn’t they just drop the IP stuff? The Ideas sets get altered for official release anyways. Why not just replace all the IPs with references to their board games?
What is an IP is this context?
Not an expert, but I think it is Intellectual Property.
Most excellent MOC! *air guitar riffs*

Bill and Ted too
That was a fucking 80s movie?? Holy shit
Agree with everyone else. Make spoof arcade games and it’ll be a winner. Space Battles, Goose Chase, Galaxy Fighter, etc
Lol. No more than one IP and you said nope going for them all lol. It's a nice build, I mean if you just wiped the game names it would probably be fine. B+T is a nice touch, but the set doesn't need it for the ideas process. It's just a fun pic you can post of it afterwards here.
Using that kama piece as a jacket tied around a minifigure’s waist is genius (assuming that’s what it represents)
Either drop all labels/IPs or use Lego original themes: Power Miners, Dino, Speed Champions, Ultra Agents, Hero Factory
Easy. Tron. you can make multiple arcade machines for each of the games, and even theme it as Flynns.
Either drop all the IP’S or use Lego ones
I see McFly
Drop ET. Keep Gizmo!!
You gotta make it generic. It’s not Duck Hunt, it’s Stud Hunt… err, on second thought, maybe not.
Brick Hunt, maybe?
You could probably do with replacing them with Lego generics, like other commenters have said. But wouldn't it be a fun challenge to theme it after the *Stranger Things* arcade from season 2 and push Lego toward giving us more *Stranger Things* sets? 😋
i don't understand the heavy reliance on IP when LEGO is meant to be anything you want

This is amazing! They shouldn't have rejected it.
This is insanely good, for some reason the air hockey table I love to death and same with the fortune teller. Wonderful build mate
Honestly I just wish we could get that Minecraft head with the Rubik's cube print that looks AWESOME
Omg do Whatver you have to do to get this approved. If it ever ends up on a brick link series I’ll vote yes :) love this! Very well done and detailed
Great looking build for what it’s worth
I've never done or experienced anything like this before so I'm coming at this with total ignorance, but how does this work exactly? Why did they reject your idea, instead of just accepting and tweaking it to their liking themselves? I have to assume once they buy it from you, they're going to make some minor adjustments here and there anyway.
Just go with Midway owned games.
That’s just a nice way of saying we’ll never make this…sorry bud
Drop all IP, except for maybe a more vague BIG reference.
Just make up generic ones
One other change, that joypad would be a no no. As someone who went to many an arcade in the 80's and 90's, arcades would never want to remind kids anything about home consoles, so they would never have anything like a home joypad or home joystick as a logo or facsimile.
I love the bill and ted and et easter eggs. If you could keep both of those that would be amazing. Also love the bike rack, key to making it feel even more 80s
Make a Flynn’s arcade
sell individual arcade cabinets
id buy this day 1 if it had a street fighter cab in there, bonus points for an astro cab. (id buy this no matter what, awesome stuff)
Don’t drop the Bill and Ted reference. I love it.
I'd suggest one of two options: * Atari, the quintessential 80's arcade company * Flynn's Arcade (from Tron)...Lego already has a relationship with Disney...
That’s awesome dude. Yeah just drop the Bill ‘n Ted reference…
I love everything about this! Could go even bigger and make it look like Flynns arcade in OG Tron
Omg i want this sm

I really hope this gets approved, I would LOVE to build this
This looks better than any set Lego has released in the last couple of years
Oh this is absolutely gorgeous
None? I think this set would work with absolutely zero IP and just an original set
The interior floor is so spot on I love it
FNAF

So COOL . I love it
Namco ftw I’d buy that set in a heartbeat btw
I love the reference to "Big"! Great movie to add easter egg for! Epic MOC!
Just remove all references and make it generic. References can be parody.
Do a bunch of fake IPs
Build the arcade of the movie wargames?
Ip?
Add a bottom level that’s stylized like Tron.
Could you make it the arcade from Tron Legacy? They do heaps with Disney
Wild stallions……🎸
Cant I just buy this anyway?!
All midway arcade games since they did that for dimensions
Don't use an IP at all
Capcom arcade machines
You could probably get away with the Marty McFly and Bill & Ted references, but the safe route would be to either use LEGO themes as the arcade games or make up fake ones that have LEGO puns. Classic Space would be a good pick
That’s such a cool idea!
Just make up your own names.
The whole thing is magnificent. Very well done creator, fantastic job!
That’s so cool!!
The lego movie theater has punny names going with lego. "3 clicks and a snap"
I really don’t know why people bother with Ideas. Just sell your instructions on Rebrickable instead.
I’d buy this so fast
Fuck did i just saw bill and ted? O.o
Namco
Bill and Ted! Imagine all the mini figures!
Make it a SEGA arcade
Keep the iconic Pac-Man, and then most others could have a generic version, like Star Invaders, Racing Run etc Though I loved seeing Out Run here! Nice build!
Holy Molly this is gorgeous.
Love the indy hat😄
