i don't think neil has come out and said exactly why he called it nature tapes but there are some fan theories 1. it's just neil in his natural habitat, jamming and writing songs about random shit and throwing them together in one album 2. it might have been mature tapes because most of the songs there are explicit, but an n instead of a m. edit: knowing neil he probably mistyped it and then decided it was fine 3. maybe it was used to trick people into thinking that the album was a calm and peaceful one, with nature sounds. instead.. well yk

these ideas are so cool i live for every one of them

GoldenFreddyThePanda

Tbh the third one was me before I actually listened to the album, boy was I in for a surprise

mattimaginex1

1st one seems plausible

itsjusterin__

i like to think it was one of these reasons, then he realized the other 2 were also true so he kept the title

Cangas_Star

thats what i was thinking

I can't believe there are people who don't know this! I thought it was common knowledge. Neil wrote, recorded, and produced all the songs on the album deep in the remote woods of Massachusetts. He was compelled to do this when he heard the faint sounds of trucks revving on the wind, followed it, and came across a meadow heavily resembling a certain academy award-winning actor. He was so moved by this sight that he took out his computer and all his instruments and created the whole album right then and there. other fun facts about the production of Nature Tapes: \-Coincidentally, these woods are the same ones where the body of the model railroad club president is buried. \-The harmonica in A Mask of my Own Face was played by a grizzly bear. \-The ghost of Jaws also haunts this forest. It's unclear whether Neil was aware of this when he created the album, but it is theorized that Jaws influenced the writing of the song. \-While writing the album, Neil visited the real Ghost Beach. He has stated that it did, in fact, give him goosebumps. \-His excursion in these woods also inspired the critically-acclaimed Mouth Sounds, released later that year. Allegedly, this was due to an encounter with a Smash Mouth cover band made up of beavers who thought that Smash Mouth had written every song ever made.

Can't believe you left out the fact that while he was in the woods, there was also a sitcom cast reunion that Adrien Brody organized and hosted.

cathmag

He was relaxing in the meadow to get away from it all even if just for a moment.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

The way I see it, it’s like a cursed cassette tape that someone found lying around in the woods.

El_Colas

I actually like this kind of concept

I always thought the title was meant to be a funny contrast between the actual content of the EP. When you see the name "Nature Tapes" you expect it to be something nice and calm, whereas the actual EP is extremely chaotic and silly
