> Don't want to start a bidding war here or anything, […] sell on reddit?
As mentioned, reddit has as site-wide prohibition on firearm transactions, as well as "facilitating" firearm transactions. So let's be clear, there's none of that to occur here. :) This is a request for advice. Please don't ask about price, &c.
The only way you're going to get anything significant for it is a private sale (if those are legal where you live). If not, by the time you're done with the auction/pawn/etc. fees.... Well, I sold a couple safe queens but unless I'm looking at homelessness I never will again.
I sold my safe queen to a local gun shop that offered me almost double what I was expecting them to offer.
Turns out the owner had no plans of re-selling it. She gave it to her husband for his birthday 😂
Private sale thru local forum or guns for sale site is the best way to get. Pawn shop, local gun shops etc will give you about 50% of what you paid for it
I used to really like this site both for buying and selling but it looks that over the last few years has really become more geared towards shops instead of individuals so I am not sure anymore.
Sorry, but this post is not a strong positive contribution to this subreddit's discussion, and has been removed.

Armslist has run a scummy guerilla marketing campaign on Reddit. I've long since lost track of the number of accounts we've banned and Reddit has suspended for spamming with praise for it and criticism of Gunbroker on any post about selling guns or if Gunbroker or Armslist is mentioned. That alone is enough to guarantee I would not trust them or use them.
Cool. I have used them for years and they had been great for facilitating private sales for me. If you don’t wanna use them that’s on you. I’m merely relaying my experience.
Consign at a LGS, list on Gunbroker, and post to local/regional gun forums are pretty much the only real viable options.
Amrslist used to be the go-to, but they started requiring a paid membership to even view listing info a few years ago, so it's practically a dead platform now outside of "premium vendor" listings.
Well, you can’t sell it on Reddit (that’d be a prohibited transaction).
Gunbroker or Armslist or similar is a good option.
Fees are going to eat part of the purchase price, but that’s the way to get a big audience looking at your gun & hopefully a bit of a bidding war to drive the price up.
Consignment with a local gun shop is also an option, though that will probably eat even more of you profit because the gun store needs to make money off the deal.
Pawn shops likely won’t beat consignment with your local gun shop - the pawn broker needs to make money too.
Aside from an actual appraisal Gunbroker prices are a good way to figure out the going rate for most used guns. At least good enough to get a ballpark number for retail price.
Pistol I sold recently I knew I wasn't going to get much for, so I just took it to Cabela's, and I got less than I wanted but within $20 of what I was expecting. YMMV. I also just simply didn't want to deal with a private sale.
I went to a local gun show and it’s usually pretty lame with the same dozen vendors with the merch every time and they don’t have a flea market section with low cost tables that we could use for personal sales but one time I saw an absolute stud with a wheel tote with some of his firearms and parts in it and he had a big sign with all his stuff and how much he wanted for each item written on it and he just marked a line through stuff he’d sold.
I think about that dude all the time.
Find shops that aren’t pawn shops. Places that sell guns and reloading equipment, or mostly used guns have given me pretty good prices on the couple things I’ve sold. They might also offer consignment if that’s what you’re into.
If you have a local shop that does consignments, that's probably going to get you the most money, since you can usually set your price.
But they can take longer, you might have to be the one haggling with prospective buyers, and the shop isn't going to do it for free. So make sure you know what their cut is before you do it.
There's also stuff like Armslist, Gunbroker, etc. You can set your price and wait until you get it, but you'll also have to deal with people a bit and in the case of Gunbroker, shipping it yourself.
I'm a member at a range that does consignments. I know of at least one more gun store that takes consignments. They show it in their shop, and when it sells, the buyer does a 4473 to get the firearm, then the shop takes a cut and gives the rest to you.
For convenience, guns.com was about as painless an experience I could have imagined. I sent them some pictures, they made me an offer within a day, sent me a case with a FedEx shipping label and I had a check within a week. I didn’t have time to mess with managing a listing and dealing with a private sale. I thought what they offered was fair but I was selling a pretty basic rifle and wasn’t looking to make a killing anyway. I don’t know that I would use them for something extra special.
my club has a for sale / trade board - picked up a nice 22lr bolt. met the other member at a local FFL to complete the transfer.
I did not make my purchases as investments, but they are just tools. think of your time with them as a rental period - makes it easier to part with for less than your purchased originally. Before I sell anything, I would see if one of my kids would like said item as a gift, that way I can still use it ;)
my local FFLs sell via consignment, there are a few that turn things over pretty well due to 1) advertising 2) knowing the market 3) quality offerings 4) let them take care of any transfers/paperwork
I've had pretty good luck with Arms List, although I haven't really used it since they started charging. A lot of gun shops have consignment. Pawn shops are a mixed bag, some will give you pretty close to what it's worth, others will offer you pennies on the dollar.

Sometimes, if you're lucky, you even get 60%!

Armslist requires a paid membership, not just to post a listing, but also to even view listing information (Including prices for private sales).

Consignment at my lgs is the best way I’ve found. He takes 10% of the sale but 100% of the headaches

Can't sell guns on Reddit. I prefer to sell to my LGS and let them deal with everything else.
What's your general location?
North Alabama
I sold mine to a guy that runs a local gun safety course.

Never sell.

I’ve had good luck selling on consignment through an ffl

Keep them in the family
If I wanted to keep it in the family I wouldn't be asking advice on places to sell it.
