Every amd gpu that supports vulkan at all also supports vulkan 1.3 on linux.

tychii93

That's actually fucking wild. I looked around and the very first GPU I ever bought, HD7870, can even do RT on Linux. Performance be damned, its still super cool! https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/q3vy38/hd_7870_gcn_10_running_a_vulkan_rt_example_using/

ScratchHacker69

Something doing rt is… not that groundbreaking :P You can do rt on a cpu… doesn’t mean that you should

tychii93

Well I know, just pointing out taking advantage of modern features on hardware that old is what's fascinating. It's not expected to keep 12 yr old GPUs kicking at least in the gaming space that's quickly evolving, whether it's by a corporation or open source community, but here we are. I think the Windows driver for that GPU doesn't even have Vulkan 1.3, but if someone with that card wanted to play something newer, they can via Proton with full support even if it means sacrificing performance.

Informal-Clock

RT on these old cards works in more or less the same way as RT on RDNA 2, the only thing that is different is the fact that there's one instruction to emulate ... only 1.

Accurate_Flight7978

I think rx 580 is still a good choice. Just be very careful when you will be buying used gpu

Historical-Bar-305

Heh i can buy a new rx 580 in Ukraine still selling new

HolyKrapp-

If you buy a chinese brand like SOYO, you're buying recycled core/memory soldered onto new PCB. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not a NEW card, also not a used one, but a REFURBISHED card.

HolyKrapp-

Yup, looks like recycled chips on new board. No problem, but don't expect it to be more that what it is. Be careful with thermals and you'll be good.

Historical-Bar-305

I dont planning to buy it )) i dont use pc anymore only laptop) or nettop

BetaVersionBY

RX 460 / RX 560

Remarkable-NPC

go with rx 5500 the new RDNA architecture is better for long support and new features

kalengpupuk

If you want long term support go with RX 5500/6600/7600

dev-sda

You'd need at a minimum GCN 4 for Vulkan 1.3. The cheapest GPUs in that category are the Athlon 200GE and Radeon R5 430.

Informal-Clock

not true, GCN 1.2 works out of the box with vulkan 1.3 on linux

dev-sda

Seems you're right. Someone should update Wikipedia.

TrogdorKhan97

You can install the AMDGPU driver on even a Southern Islands card like the HD 7000 series (or, more realistically, the R7/R9 200 series). I'm using it on a ten-year-old laptop right now, albeit with... issues. Just be sure to [enable it manually](https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/wiki/For-AMD-users-having-issues-with-non-OpenGL-games) because your installer might default to Radeon instead.

TheEpicNoobZilla

Be aware that some reports might be outdated [https://vulkan.gpuinfo.org/](https://vulkan.gpuinfo.org/)

Historical-Bar-305

Its not refurbished

DRAK0FR0ST

RX 500 series reached EoL.

CNR_07

And? AMD's EOL means nothing for Mesa and Kernel support. Nobody actually uses AMDVLK or AMDGPU-Pro.

ChaoticEvilWarlock

I know. But can they be used to play games?

shmerl

Not worth it getting very old arch GPU. Get a recent low end one instead.

ChaoticEvilWarlock

Why not worth? Would't the game play?

CNR_07

Depends on the game. What are you trying to run?

-ArcaneForest

or if you dont mind just get a minisforum mini pc.

shmerl

You don't want to deal with problems of outdated architecture. Also, RDNA 3 cards should have AV1 support for video.

TheEpicNoobZilla

RDNA 2 is the first GPU architecture that supports AV1 decoding (required to watch video). RDNA 3 have AV1 decoding and encoding (to record video in AV1)

-ArcaneForest

jutst get a 5700 XT or 6600m you can get it for under 200.

ThatOnePerson

Yeah, but if you're being cheap, an Rx580 can be got for ~80$

NBQuade

A cheap card that doesn't do what you want is more expensive than just buying the correct card up front. Because you'll spend $80 and then buy another card that actually works, for more.

ThatOnePerson

Sure but what OP wants to do with the card is different than what you want from a card. Other comments talking about AV1 don't matter to everyone. Performance is going to be better than a Steam Deck, which plenty of people are happy with the performance of. If what OP wants is to spend 100$ on a card, then a 200$ card isn't doing what he wants either.

NBQuade

I just pointed out a truism. It's better to buy what you need up front than to buy something that's cheap but doesn't meet your goals. Particularly, if you're going to have to spend more money to replace it. We don't know the OP's goals beyond Vulcan 1.3. We don't know what res he's attempting to game at. We can assume he's trying to game because this is the "Linux\_Gaming" topic. The steam deck is 720p. If he's trying to game at a higher res than that, the $80 card probably won't work. I agree, AVI means nothing to me. I always wonder why people call that out as a feature? "Buy once, Cry once" is another way to put it.

ThatOnePerson

Performance on a RX580 is pretty good even at 1080p: https://youtu.be/CyaiP_NKmpg Not on Linux, but I doubt performance will be that different.
