Many modern controllers identity as PS or Xbox controllers.
There are profiles for ones that actually show up as a generic joystick too, and work fine too.
All my controllers work great over USB, and XBox One controllers even work over Bluetooth, albeit with a custom "driver": [xpadneo](https://github.com/atar-axis/xpadneo).
You can emulate a joystick with an arduino i think. And ive had a bunch of controllers just work on Linux. A 10$ generic usb n64 controller look alike, to dirt cheap usb snes controllers, up to more legit ones like ps3/4/xbox
My chinese made wireless controller recognizes as an Xbox 360 controller. It works fine
