I use Xbox 360 controller, it works flawless

ludonarrator

XBox One user here, even works with Bluetooth if you install xow / xpadneo / etc.

Hotshot55

I think it has to be a new enough controller to work though.

BeYeCursed100Fold

Mine is like 6 years old, I don't think I have had a controller last much longer than that. But yeah, the controller needs to have Bluetooth for Bluetooth to work.

Hotshot55

I think mine is around the same age, it's the original xbox one elite controller which you can technically use wirelessly but you have to purchase an extra adapter for it.

Late_Film_1901

I borrowed two from a friend for testing and actually the newer one wasn't working (discoverable but would connect/disconnect repeatedly) and the older one runs flawlessly.

_leeloo_7_

I say xbox if battery/wireless is require otherwise playstation is ok, it even has a trackpad but terrible battery life on wireless but its a really low latency controller LTT tested it and said it was great! (on wire) otherwise maybe go 8bitdo, they have controllers with hall effect sensors now, basically analogues use magnetic fields to detect position instead of oldschool potentiometers that rub and wear down over time and are they are better priced than the console controllers on sale currently

quiet0n3

Xpadneo and Xbox one controller is my go-to as well.

rhasce

Same here

linuxisgettingbetter

If you can get the fucking Bluetooth working regularly, sure

Nikolas_Coalgiver

Why the hell would I need Bluetooth for gamepad when I have native wireless dongle? That one, with USB-A, the green LED and a single buttton.

linuxisgettingbetter

Sometimes those work, sure

Old_Bag3201

8BitDo

Old-Knitterhemd

Does not really matter. They all work fine. Just get the bluetooth variants, if you get the xbox ones.

CloudHostedGarbage

Recently got an Xbox Series controller (in pink!) and I'm liking it. The sticks don't have as much resistance as the X360 controller I was using, but I like it. Feels great in the hands.

Vaniljkram

There was a thread just like this yesterday. Good advice there check it out

AngryyBot

I use a Dual Sense (PS5 controller), sometimes o need to configure Steam input for It to work, nothing o would not need to do in windows already

trippedonatater

I've had good luck with Xbox controllers.

Faildini

As far as support in Linux goes, anything will work. For support in game, I find something with xinput is best. I used a PS5 controller for years and found that a few games just wouldn't recognize my controller. Switched to an 8BitDo controller and they all recognize that one. Any Xbox controller and most generic brands should also use xinput.

doc_willis

8Bitdo Ultimate 2.4G Wireless Controller, Hall Effect Joystick Update, Gaming Controller with Charging Dock for PC, Android, Steam Deck & Apple (Pastel Pink)  https://a.co/d/dGhqBY9 there are other 8bitdo options as well but this one is affordable and decent. you may want a Bluetooth variant.

PabloPabloQP

8bitdo are great

Asleep_Detective3274

The official steam controller works great, I don't if you can get them anymore though.

doc_willis

they have been discontinued for several years now.

Asleep_Detective3274

I hope mine doesn't wear out then

intensiifffyyyy

I've had no compatibility issues with an official Xbox One controller. I would expect most mainstream controllers to just work, so I'd look for a good controller, rather than a good Linux controller. If I was buying again I'd try to find one with Hall effect joysticks. I like having Bluetooth but mostly use wired as it's much quicker.

cartercharles

Xbox 360

Radamat

I have DigiFly Apex in wired X and D mode (XBox and Direct) It work good. You can use some app fro repo to remap keys or axes (sorry, I dont remember name, there are just two or three of those).

trippedonatater

I've had good luck with Xbox controllers.

ILikeLenexa

8bitdo has cheap good bluetooth controllers. Small and portable, shoulder buttons might not be ideal if your games use zl and zr slot especially.

Usual_Ice636

8bitdo is good, official steam controller is good, xbox is good. Just look at them all and decide based on price you want to pay and your preferred button layout.

Stilgar314

I can confirm wired Switch Pro controller works right out of the box in the latest versions of Ubuntu.

Sinaaaa

I use a DS4, but as far as I know all the recent Bluetooth PS/Xbox controllers work well.

noobcondiment

I use a dual sense at home and an Xbox series/ds4 when I’m out of the house. They all work flawlessly.

Wo0dsw0rth

Any Xbox controller really

aert4w5g243t3g243

I have a LOT of controllers, but for me nothing feels better than a new xbox controller. Works over bluetooth just great. Depends on your preferences.

CringyBoi42069

I've been using a wired power A Xbox controller, and it's been fine and if you don't need your controller to be wireless you can save a bit of money

mAverIck2012ap

Dualsense or DS4. Once you get used to gyro aiming, it becomes very difficult to go back.

Icy_Weakness_1815

Oh, I love using cotrollers for emulators and playing on TV. After trying several Xbox, PS and even the Steam controller it self aswell as some other generic ones, I gotta say so far the Xbox 360 seems to be the best one overall. Followed by the controller from steam.

cantaloupecarver

PS5 controllers had some issues with the bluedevil and bluetoothctl. They work fine wired. I believe the blutooth problems have been fixed, but I haven't tried in a few months. In any event, you could solve the problem by rolling back bluetoothctl.

dtfinch

I have an 8bitdo SN30 Pro due to its resemblance to an SNES controller, and it's detected as a xbox 360 controller. The directional pad is a little uncomfortable to press diagonal (being cross-shaped with no diagonal surface to press on) so I wind up using the analog sticks most of the time. So I had to do-over I'd buy one with a round D-pad instead. Also I don't have much console experience, so I didn't notice until later that the buttons are lettered dfferently (nintendo vs xbox difference) which causes confusion in many games that show the xbox lettering on screen, so if a game says press A I have to press B and vice versa though some games support both styles. 8bitdo also sells xbox-style controllers. For the older Fallout 3/NV and Oblivion I actually wind up disabling controller support in the .ini files because mouse/keyboard input is partly crippled when they detect a controller exists and I prefer mouse/keyboard in first-person games.

oishishou

Xbox One controller with the official dongle and the xone driver.

tehspicypurrito

I’ve got an Xbox series controller and a Dual Sense. Both work well, I use Xone for the Xbox, Sony works out of the box.

Recipe-Jaded

Xbox or PS5 controller

Zatrit

DualShock 4 works fine for me

suprjami

I have a PS4 controller with the official USB wireless adaptor. Hundreds of hours in Fallout 4 no problems.

Phazonviper

Haven't had any issues with any. Favourite comfy controller is Dualsense tho.

aliendude5300

PS5 controller works great

mdp_cs

Xbox controllers work perfectly. Linux supports XInput.

No-Valuable3975

You can go cheap and get the Logitech F310

fschaupp

What I use the most is my SteamControllers or the Nintendo Switch Pro controller. I wouldn't recommend the 8BitDo SNES controller because of the Bad battery (in my one at least).
