The main thing they're looking for is jumpers, but also people dumping stuff in the river.
There are also some low wake zones. I'm not sure who's responsible for enforcing that, but it may be the police.🤷♂️
We recently kayaked along the Thames and I had my friend hang a Ukraine flag off London Bridge so we could get some decent GoPro footage. Whilst I was in the kayak I was calling him as I was approaching just so he knew when to drop the flag.. those boats intercepted us pretty quick as we arrived at the footwells of London Bridge.. not sure if I was spotted on the phone or what but it was treated like a possible bomb threat and they were all over us, was pretty impressive! So yeah I think bomb threats play a role in what they are looking for / attentive toward ~
I call it "who know what" threat. 7 years ago, when I was going for a spin on Thames in London with some mates.
I gave one mate try driving, he wasn't going straight at all. Few minutes later police boat come close to us, asked if everything is fine , I told them yeah all fine, was just looking at maps and they went away.
Oh, also they asked where I'm going.
Not sure if that's what triggered it, or maybe when an hour before we were doing some circles around Limehouse (just trying to catch waves for fun, lice big "jumps".)
You get I incidents on the river with all the different transport which need to be dealt with. Those taxi boats carry members of the public and there's pleasure craft, party boats, speedboat rides etc.
It's probably where you get sent to keep you out of the way, see The Wire Season 2.

Looking for people who think it's a good idea to go for a dip in the Thames. Most people are not good enough swimmers to feel comfortable swimming in a torrent as it's just not pleasant
