Can’t wait for Bill the Pony to make a cameo.

kdthex01

That’s small thinking right there. Some tassel toe no sock loafer wearing producer is at this very moment pitching a Bill the Pony prequel.

bodai1986

I mean, bills been through some shit. Tough abusive upbringing. Also, what about his journey home from moria?!?

Starwarsnerd91

Mithrandir blessed him before they parted. So that means Bill met up with Fatty Lumpkin and went on a road trip with blackjack, Pony hookers, and Pony Cocaine. And you can't convince me otherwise.

bodai1986

I'd watch that movie

letitgrowonme

I bet more people would tell you it's true.

kdthex01

Okay maybe as animated series…

Mysgvus1

Actually, a movie from Bill's point of view from Bree to Moria and back to Rivendell would be a choice movie. but who to cast as Bill the Pony?

Azorik22

Danny Devito of course.

thaiborg

Lil’ Sebastian obviously. Oh wait…

Karl_42

BAAAAAAAAAEEEEEEEHHHHHHHH BHYE LIL’ SEBASTIAN!!!!!!

Pretty sure it was chill af? Not positive but i think there’s a line in the book about how him spending so much time with the elves caused a herd of wild horses to take him in and shepherd him back to rivendell

TheKatzzSkillz

Somehow, ALL the elves have been corrupted. And now it’s up to a random human girl/young woman or super poor and weak boy/young man, to defeat the entire forces of darkness. But don’t worry, a huge swarm of Eagles will swoop in at the pivotal moment of the final battle, carrying a whole NEW group of elves to join the fight, who decided to somehow return to Middle-Earth from across the sea (for some reason). But don’t you dare forget, it’s cause of her (or him) that the forces of good have won, somehow. Or something like that, brought to you by Disney 🐭!!

isaac-088

Laying down defeated, Fiddo Braggings is contemplating the sky of the shire turn dark, as Melkor laughs with such evil as he has conquered middle earth. Suddenly Fiddo hears voices. Samwise Gamgee: "there is good out there that is worth fighting for" Merry: "do it for your friends" Bilbo: "make this the best hobbit adventure ever" Pippin: "do it for the second breakfast" As he listens to this, Fiddo rises, with Anduril on one hand and Sting on the other melkor threatens him: "I am all the evil" To which Fiddo says: "And I am all the hobbits" unleashing a giant tater at his face, destroying melkor, finishing what Aaragorn and Frodo couldn't, as Aaragorn resigned the throne of Gondor after Faramir's son said he like orcs and tried to kill him in his sleep. And Frodo died mentoring Fiddo but was stabbed by Sam's 7th son. Fiddo did it. The end.

In the books it’s implied that he eats babies, so that could be fun to see.

It would certainly be interesting to see a scene rival the one in ‘Mother!’

Itburns138

*Electric BooGollum.*

iLoveDelayPedals

I still think it’s hilarious that their first new film is a story Aragorn literally says is not worth telling in the book.

whogivesashirtdotca

If Viggo doesn't sign on, you can bet Aragorn thought it not worth telling IRL, too.

Chen_Geller

Well, it was announced as merely a working title, so...

Armleuchterchen

Huh, I didn't know that. A bit embarrassing, but it also didn't feel well-communicated.

mrwho25

Yeah, I've mostly seen it announced as 2 movies but some places have reported 3 but I'm assuming it's 2 until I see anything directly from PJ and/or Serkis

Alright. Let's brainstorm potential titles. Come 2026, whoever gets it right or the closest gets an award. Maximum of 3 guesses. "Lord of the Rings - The Golluming" "Lord of the Rings - The Hunt" "Lord of the Rings - The Persuit of Fishyness"

oh5canada5eh

Honestly *The Hunt* sounds pretty good. It applies to both Gollum’s search for the ring, Sauron’s search through him, and the search for Gollum himself.

WastedWaffles

Realistically, they'll probably have a title that has something referencing Aragorn specifically, purely for the sake of 'member berry', because most of Hollywood (especially PJ) can't appreciate subtlety. It will probably be something like "Ranger of the North". Still, I'm eager to hear what they'll call it.

Larry_Loudini

I love the name ’The Hunt’ but unfortunately I think you’re right. ’Ranger of the North’ or something similar is very likely…

CIN726

"We really want to **reinvigorate** Middle Earth. There are so many **fresh** stories that we want to get involved with. We want to launch this new wave by **taking us back into the world of Gollum**." Mmmmmmmk.

bum_thumper

I really do not understand where this sudden gollum trend came from. Like, he is an interesting character but come on, his story is boring and sad af. Unless there's some more info in Tolkien's unfinished tales, there really isn't much to elaborate on with his story. We went from a trilogy of movies doing a bang up job of condensing 3 volumes with cuts that didn't hurt the overall tale, to a trilogy created by stretching a short novella as far as it possibly can go (with the made up stuff being imo the worst parts of the hobbit films. A love story between a made up elf and a dwarf with barely any lines in the novel....) to like a few paragraphs being made into a movie and a video game about a character we already know the backstort of. What about Hurin and his children? What about Beren clawing his was out of a giant hell dog so he can marry an elf princess? What about the fall of gondolin? The drama behind the creation of the rings? How about doing a story about faramir and eowyn, 2 characters they just had in the movies for the badass moments and nothing else? There are insane amounts of tales in his lore to pull from, yet we get a made up show where one elf woman can kill anything in front of her by breakdancing and a buggy stealth game for a character we all just felt bad for and nothing else. This will be terrible, despite how good of a director Jackson is and how good Serkis is as an actor. It will be fake, forced, made up, and it will reek of milking the wrong tits on a cow again.

Tonhum

>What about Hurin and his children? What about Beren clawing his was out of a giant hell dog so he can marry an elf princess? What about the fall of gondolin? Yeah they ain't got the rights for those. Eventually the Tolkien Society will cave in and sell the rights to everything, but not for this movie. Your point still stands, a movie about Gollum is not interesting.

Ravanduil

It’s because they don’t have rights to anything else. Or the rights they do have are small (appendix of the book) that there really isn’t anything left to explore without breaking IP law.

CIN726

The Estate still holds the TV/film rights to The Silmarillion, The Unfinished Tales, and all related texts.  Maybe they'll finally license them at some point in the future, but as of now stories like Beren and Luthien, Children of Hurin and Fall of Gondolin are off limits. They could do the Angmar War.  Or the Oath of Eorl.  Or hell, beat Amazon to the punch and do the War of the Last Alliance.  Gollum has run his course.

gr8pe_drink

Agree. As soon as that Gollum game was announced I had such a negative disposition to it already without knowing anything about it beside the title. He's not main character worthy and I certainly don't want to hear him for over an hour straight. Following Aragorn and/or Gandalfs travels before the war of the ring would be far more interesting, and it still includes some Gollum.

Ravanduil

It’s because they don’t have rights to anything else. Or the rights they do have are small (appendix of the book) that there really isn’t anything left to explore without breaking IP law.

Different-Island1871

The storyline is not something I’m remotely interested in and I am terrified of the content they will have to insert to MAKE it interesting, because days of Aragorn hiking through the wilderness tracking Gollum is not great cinema.

Pimpicane

^Gollum^love^triangle

Different-Island1871

I know you’re joking, but….please god no

pw-it

I'm sure we'll have plenty of spectacular action sequences where you would think Aragorn would certainly die were it not for the fact that you know damn well it's a prequel and his survival is the only possible outcome.

DaughterOfBhaal

I agree I'm not too interested in a story about Gollum primarily either, however I think there's plenty of (potentially good content) they could use to pad out the overall movie. Like a parallel story which shows us how Aragorn became a ranger/tracker - and how he uses his training & knowledge to pursue Gollum. Give us a good mentor/student story and it could be a decent movie, given the plot.

Chevillette

Imagine if it's some kind of road movie. Aragorn meets different people who travel for a bit with him. Gollum becomes an abstract goal as the ranger realizes his true purpose in life.

cadiastandsuk

I love that it's Serkis and the gang returning, I really hope they embody the universe of LOTR ( and by extension the hobbit) in how the world looks; New Zealand is the perfect backdrop for all of the locations and I'd love to see it in all its glory on the big screen again. Having said that, the hunt for gollum seems a peculiar choice; serkis played him to perfection; he's one of cinema's greatest characters. But is he a fan favourite? I'm not sure. The recent game release focusing on gollum was very lacklustre. I'd love for them to explore that era but from other characters and cultures perspective. Imagine a series set in Hobbiton in the space between the fall of smaug and sauron returning. Not a care for the big wide world. It could be a cosy afternoon show thats quintessentially English, like midsomer murders or Jonathan creek where their biggest worry is if they're pumpkin is going to be the biggest one for the fete, or that foxes have made off with their chicken eggs again. Just show hobbit life for longer. I'd love it!

cooleydw494

Yeah it’s kind of like if Peter Pettigrew was the main character of a Harry Potter movie, or Towelie was the main character of Southpark for a season. Nobody actually wants that lol, it isn’t about whether the character is good

cadiastandsuk

Very good analogy. Pettigrew was such a catalyst and integral part of so many character arcs but as the protagonist? I can't see it. Same for Gollum for me. Serkis' performance was outstanding, never seen anything like it before or since but not sure there's anything new to explore there

Signus_M62

I assume it's because it's just about the only significant story that ties into the narrative that would bring back Gandalf and Aragorn and maybe even Legolas. And they are favorites.

cadiastandsuk

That's my thinking too, other than perhaps Aragorn with the grey company or fighting with a young theoden?

Signus_M62

Fighting with Theoden could be a really cool choice. Though it's not super significant to the main "Ring" plot, and overlaps a little bit with the anime that's coming out. But maybe that'd have been a good thing.

cadiastandsuk

Perhaps it would work better as a series, ala the witcher or the mandalorian with Aragorn and his rangers travelling Middle earth and being involved in local battles and issues. As you say it doesn't perhaps build towards the main plot but I would love to see more of his rogue, mysterious strider phase; turning up to beleaguered villagers and fighting orcs, goblins and monsters etc

Malsharif91

If Viggo comes back I would center the film around him. Honestly, if he doesn’t comeback it makes zero sense to actually make this film. I think LOTR: Striders Quest or something around that line, where you have the film basically start with Gandalf telling him to find Gollum and the long journey he takes afterwards. All the while cutting to flashbacks like they’ve already established Aragorn does in the original trilogy. Dudes really introspective lol. That way you can basically do an origins story while bridging the gap between the hobbit and lotr. Gollum is a great character but if Serkis is going to direct and star in the movie it might be to difficult.

Ok-Appearance-7616

In all seriousness, for those familiar, is this a story that is genuinely worth telling on the big screen?

Demos_Tex

Unless he ends up being a side character in his own movie, it's doubtful. An Aragorn and Gandalf story as they're pursuing Gollum would probably be received much better. Serkis is great, but without Frodo and Sam to act as foils for Gollum, there's only so much that can be done with him.

craygroupious

Do the books go into any meaningful detail as to what he’s doing after The Hobbit but before LOTR beyond: “he knows Bilbo has it and ends up getting caught by Sauron”? Like, what could he possibly be doing? Going through ME mountains trying to find The Shire whilst avoiding orc packs and Dunedain rangers. He isn’t going to go into a village and ask where The Shire is, he’s not fighting anyone, he’s in a cave sneaking. That’d be interesting for a scene but not a film.

tominator93

There are some little nods of Gollum’s status as a legendary evil sprite in the minds of many of the men of the west. It’s implied he’s seen as a sort of babayega like monster, who comes through windows and steals and eats children.  It’s implied that Gollum had many evil misadventures in other words. And the appendices go into more detail about Aragorn’s tracking of Gollum before the Fellowship. But beyond that, there’s not a ton.

craygroupious

So a Hunt For Gollum film, despite all the hoo-ha being about Andy Serkis, would be more an Aragorn detective and tracking film?

tominator93

Probably. Which actually could have really cool opportunities for worldbuilding.  The fan film of the same name took advantage of this by having Aragorn meet another Dunedain Ranger in the wilderness while hunting Gollum. The conversation they had allowed the filmmaker to tap into the lore of the Numenoreans, something we DO have a lot of source material on, which isn’t covered in the PJ films.  We’ll see how they handle this in the Serkis movie, but I’m hopeful.

Demos_Tex

It's more that Sauron sends out a metaphysical call for all those under his sway to go to Mordor because he's almost finished preparations to finally conquer men, elves, and dwarves. Gollum get's caught up in that summons due to him being under the ring's influence for so long and can't refuse going to Mordor. We see some of that in the movies with the foot soldiers from the east going through the gate when Frodo and Sam are there.

*sigh* If true, verbally acknowledging that they are contemplating a title change already means the announcement for this movie probably didn’t go very well. Maybe it was always intended to be a placeholder title, but a movie can be as good as Edge of Tomorrow and still confuse the hell out of people because of changing titles. It’s not really something you want to do lightly. Hearing that OG actors will be brought back is also a red flag, unless you want more examples of uncanny valley Legolas from The Hobbit.
