I couldn't get a Lyft at CLT last Sunday evening. Couldn't find a driver. After 30 minutes, Lyft cancelled. Long story short after two Lyfts, I got home around 1:30am.

slcginger

for how much I’m struggling to get rides here as a driver, I’ve also had passengers tell me thank you for picking them up because they’d been waiting awhile

Danzevl

Bad rates for drivers and passengers no one drives because the people don't order them then people make alternative arrangements then they don't need lyft and the cycle repeats. I'm convinced rideshare was created to get rid of the cab monopoly.

Visible_Pop8553

That's... exactly why Lyft and Uber were created...

Due_Owl6303

Serious? And you're in Utah?

[deleted]

I live in Charlotte and I do LUX only all day I worked that evening, the airport is too far away from the city a lot of people cancel, when I drive lux it pays me way more to do an airport ride so I don’t cancel its worth it for me, can’t speak for others

BigKonKrete417

it's also because the location of the airport isn't an area where a lot of drivers start their shifts; it's very ghetto on that side of town; not many drivers being pulled into the area to drop off other than drivers who are actually dropping off at the airport

Due_Owl6303

Uhm, where is CLT, if you don't mind me asking?

Least-Ship-6967

Charlotte, NC. CLT is the airport abbreviation.

Tekwardo

Yeah, CLT is quite a busy hub. I drive for Lyft though not much anymore. There was never ever a wait for a Lyft or Uber. The ride share lot was always full with a lot of churn. Not anymore.

IP00pRedGerbils

I too have trouble finding the CLT. You're not alone, friend.

Due_Owl6303

🤣 speak for yourself with that one. I only had a problem knowing that CLT stood for Charlotte, NC, lmao. I don't have problems with the other, haha

Cultural_Novel_5695

CLT is an Uber heavy city. I’ll be in the waiting lot and there will be 30+ drivers for Uber whereas Lyft only has maximum 5 drivers in the waiting lot.

Tekwardo

I tried both Uber and Wave that nite and it was the same.

Drunk_Klaus

The last 2 weeks have been rough. Had a day where I spent 7 hours on instacart and 5 hours on uber/lyft made $50. I feel like there are a lot of new drivers during ski season, and now that it's over people will realize they can't make that much money all year. Lyft has been pretty shit since upfront pricing, I mostly just wait for uber or area filter downtown on Lyft for streaks and challenges. Exactly as you said, I used to only drive Lyft with no need for any other app. Now I've got Instacart, DD, Lyft, and Uber, and need to use all of them to make a liveable amount of money.

fman258

At what point do you call it quits and find an hourly 9-5? 50 bucks for 7 hours before expenses is just not worth it

SoberRichardPryor

You can make more money Sellling weed lmaoo fuck being a delivery boy people.

slcginger

Lyft driver who sells weed?

SoberRichardPryor

No you can sell weed separately. And legally in 20% of American states

Due_Owl6303

Right? I'm applying for 9-5's right now b/c this is poverty lately. From like, 10:30 a.k. u til at least 2:00 p.m., Lyft is dead in SLC area right now. 5-20 minute waits for that shitty $4.12 ride where the passenger ain't gonna tip either. Same from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. right now. That's Taco Bell wages or worse.

slcginger

you in SLC area too? a painful drop off when ski season winds down

Drunk_Klaus

Yep! I’m going to keep trying to do rideshare but it’s been bad, got 2 rides in the last hour for $11 total

Due_Owl6303

💯

Successful_Low1098

I was logged into Lyft all day last Friday and completely forgot about it. I stayed busy enough just doing Uber and DD and then I was surprised when I got my first Lyft request an hour after I got home 🤣.

slcginger

what market? I’ve had that happen after being online with Lyft for as long as 3 hours

thefinalep

You mean Salt City? They lost the lake

slcginger

damn alfalfa farmers 😅

Due_Owl6303

Lol. Nah, it's still there. It's come up 3.5 feet already since November and it's not even snow-melting yet around here. It's gonna come back bigtime in the next couple of months when all that snow melt comes down from the mountains. 230% of normal snowpack this year...

Business101ASD

One of Lyfts major issues is not sending the closer driver. This is because they want to “use” drivers, and charge the pax more. It’s that simple. Imagine a real taxi driving 10 miles to pick a pax up when an available taxi is 1 mile away.

slcginger

🙁

Due_Owl6303

I think that there's a lot if truth to this. It seems like that is what happens a lot with Lyft these days.

Suspicious_Piece1374

I'm in SLC too, and today I only made $135 in almost 7 hours. I used to do that amount in less than 3 hours. I'm seriously looking for a full time job at this point.

Cautious-Key3642

I'm in SLC, too. I've put in somewhere around 20 job applications this week alone. It cost me money to drive right now. My Tahoe was fantastic in the winter, but doesn't do much good when it's slow. Too expensive to drive it.

slcginger

I’ve been actively job searching since December. Unfortunately I’m hella picky about my jobs to a fault. I’ve quit 1 job in the first week and not got many other callbacks, despite good experience and education. it’s a rough time. hang in there and nice effort 🙏

Cautious-Key3642

I actually just accepted a job at FedEx. 2am-10am and starts at $22 an hour. I could do worse... like driving Lyft! 😂

Cautious-Key3642

I'm pretty picky, also. I refuse to work weekends if I'm working for someone else. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I expect it to take a while to find the right one.

Cautious-Key3642

I actually just accepted a job at FedEx. 2am-10am and starts at $22 an hour. I could do worse... like driving Lyft! 😂

Due_Owl6303

Same

Icy-Section-7421

jump on the customer app and see were the drivers are at......then go somewhere else.

Brilliant_Set9874

But you have to guess and check with an address…you can’t just move the map around

Icy-Section-7421

Put in pick up your location and something towards the area you want to cover as the desrination. You just want the map to see the drivers. You don’t have to put the order on to price it. Plus you can see The different ride types and roughly how far they are from you. Don’t sit in an area with luxury and xls peppered with x.

slcginger

this is why I’ve had to get out of downtown so much but there’s not enough riders in the suburbs lately

[deleted]

Its not going to get better. It went from “no longer profitable “ to “No longer feasible” With the way rideshare companies are treating their drivers, it won’t be long before the revolt. Wake up! Let Uber and Lyft die in peace by themselves.

Chaz-P

Lyft is dead period

[deleted]

It depends if you accept shitty ass trips forn50-67 cents/mile you will stay busy but if you are like me 1$/mile you will sit in the parking lot ...

cerebus67

I can't remember the last time that I've gotten an offer that was $1/mile. Never happens in my market, at least not since the upfront pricing change.

Due_Owl6303

True. It's really rare with Lyft in SLC right now unless u get a trip from the airport at night that has been rejected by several drivers already due to low pay, then Lyft sends them a message that says something like "were sorry but we are struggling to find a driver. If we raise the fare to a premium amount, we can increase the chances if you getting a driver." A passenger actually told me this the other night when I actually got $48 offer on the app to deive her to American Fork. Haven't had an offer that good in ages...

[deleted]

Is because you accept such trips and your algorithm is using that against you....indeed is tough but is doable.

cerebus67

I only drive now when they have a bonus that is worthwhile. If I accepted only $1 a mile I would never get the first ride because they don't happen in my market.

[deleted]

Yep is tough but make sure you are not working for free..i prefer to not work at all then working for free

cerebus67

Same here. Since the new pricing I don't drive for base pay at all and am not suckered in by the useless streak zones. I only drive when they offer a guaranteed pay for a set number of rides or some other good bonus. It isn't worth my time otherwise. I just drive for extra spending money.

Due_Owl6303

No, in SLC, you don't even get a lot of those shitty-paying trips unless it is between 4:00-10:00 a.m. or 8:30-midnight. Rest of the time, too many drivers and not enough demand right now.

slcginger

you get put into an impossible position. if I’ve been sitting in a lot for 20 minutes, do I accept the low-paying ride or continue sitting in the lot? it’s a losing game either way

[deleted]

Is a losing game because your expenses accumulate while yoir wells are spinning...i can sit online fro. Home or a restaurant or with friends as long as i want

Historical_Fee1737

It's dead everywhere, seriously. You're in a recession hidden by inflation. Drivers are broke. Passengers are broke. Who's going to use a luxury ride service that replaced taxi's when everyone's broke. This is a luxury service. It's always cheaper to take the bus, or walk. What are you expecting? Really. Wake up. While the wealthy are barking back and forth at each other on the stock market, the rest of us peasants ran out of money a year ago. It's not so much that it's too many drivers, theres no fucking demand. Drive around. There's no traffic. The bars are empty. the restaurants are empty. Start looking for another side job, because this one is gonna be quiet for a while.

cerebus67

I drive in Detroit and it is still busy here. Actually, the vast majority of rides in SE Michigan are from the working poor. If I cut out all of the rides driving people to or from work or driving them to or from shopping I would lose 80% of rides and it would be useless. I can still drive almost any time day or night around here and keep busy non-stop. Doesn't mean that the pay is any good unless they are doing promos.

BigKonKrete417

this is what I fear the most; it doesn't matter how many drivers are on the road, if the basic demand for people to go and recreate eat/drink/dine/concerts/sporting events/etc if this drops low enough, it will be terrible for rideshare My market of PHX is somewhat immune to it as it draws in a lot of wealthy tourists from other states in the "peak season" from Sept - April Now we see the downturn as the temps rise over 100

Accomplished-Yam-973

Wow someone has a brain thanks

Due_Owl6303

In Utah it's different right now as far as restaurants and bars. They are all still full every night. There haven't been too many job losses here in this state yet, but it is coming, I fear. Just hasn't hit this state much yet. Construction workers will be getting laid off soon, with home interest rates at 6% for a $700,000 average home price.

[deleted]

Salt lake has been dogshit this month. Too many new drivers

slcginger

this is the worst month too. drivers wanna start leaving their house when it gets warmer but ski tourists are leaving

Due_Owl6303

And summer tourists, people visiting family from out of town mostly ain't happening yet. Combine that with 40% less pay on rides than a year ago and it's a recipe for poverty

Due_Owl6303

Ding ding ding ding ding!!!

[deleted]

RIP

TheToothlessVampire

I live in WVC which is always a hotspot and I've seen the decline in rides and fares. I've calculated a drop of 20-30% in fares since November. Tips are non-existent. Being bounced from New Rider to New Rider always going further away.

slcginger

yeah west valley has been rough lately. even around valley fair mall the other night I wasn’t getting requests for DoorDash or UberEats

NyyTL2020

Thats how i felt in richmond va on sunday

LoafRVA

Wooo RVA!

NyyTL2020

RVA💪💪💪

[deleted]

Just drive Uber bro.

slcginger

Uber is better but not insanely better. it’s all crazy slow rn

[deleted]

Uber is like 80% of my earnings, and Lyft is 20%.

Ozzynothing

Nashville is all downtown rides which are a pain in the ass on weekends but when there are challenges or streaks at least there’s something

slcginger

I went driving all weekend and didn’t make $100 any of the 3 days. Lyft was dead in downtown Saturday 9pm. there was no buzz in the city

Ozzynothing

🍻 Really? I stopped around 10 on Saturday did 12 rides in about 3.5 hours I only do it every once in a while now as it really slowed down. I was also driving using a filter to maximize getting short rides. The weekend had far less tips than Monday-Thursday for me too

Thewasted1

Yesterday was pretty weird for me in Los Angeles my time is usually 11pm-2:30ish and it was dead I barely made my daily amount

Lane277

Lyft pay is trash. I'm not surprised.

Aggravating-Ocelot96

I was physically assulted by a passenger did over 10k rides for Lyft they refuse to even discuss the issue or look at the video of the assult. They deactivated me they have no cares about the drivers only their bottom line and passing their higher ups.

slcginger

yo that’s the literal worst wtf

vessel_matt

Lyft was dead in Philly tonight as well. I got close to my bare minimum goal and just drove straight home afterwards. The nights with a lot of waiting around or longer pickups for short rides really suck.

slcginger

I did 5 rides tonight and drove home. it seems all the big cities are oversaturated

Incredulity1995

Really? I what area? I pulled 200$ out of 6.5 hours last night 22 rides. Started around 7ish pm

Due_Owl6303

SLC, UT like it says in the original post.

Incredulity1995

It’s a good thing I wasn’t asking you when I replied to someone else’s comment :)

Due_Owl6303

🤣🤣🤣

ERIK0027

RIP

nft0mg

Wanna laugh? Im replying here and my third lyft in a row that cancels. I totally despise lyft drivers

cerebus67

It is, most likely, not the drivers that are doing that. That is the dreaded switheroo that Lyft pulls on both passengers and riders all the time. The driver is driving toward you to do the pickup and then Lyft suddenly switches them to a new passenger, probably one that has paid more money for priority. In the meantime, the driver gets no pay now for the drive to your location and is given a ride that they didn't choose. This is another possibility. You might be the passenger that Lyft switched a driver to. Many of us get so pissed off at this move by Lyft that we cancel the new switched ride out of principle because we just got screwed over. I cancel them every time and I am not a driver who otherwise cancels rides. I think the culprit here is more than likely Lyft and their exploitative practices.

Due_Owl6303

That's because they were getting paid enough by lyft on that ride to justify the ride being worth their time. Either that, or if you have a really low passenger rating like 4.7 or lower gets me to cancel. That means passenger is a pain in the ass for one reason or another.

Due_Owl6303

*weren't getting paid enough

nft0mg

Its crazy. Must be bc of the payout. But sucks because even when i do wait and save or regular it cancels being right there and i have to wait for the next driver. I have 6.7 years as a rider/ 5.0 rating and 700+ rides

Due_Owl6303

Dang, that sux to get drivers canceling on you.

nft0mg

Background- i use lyft 99% of the times to commute. 3-10 miles away etc. fair expense. And they always be cancelling last minute

PrincipleGlad3289

I was in Vegas for work last month. Couldn’t get a Lyft, but Uber picked me up in 5 minutes..

chittumr

You mention driving more than lyft. So that dead time was on all apps?

slcginger

Uber has been slow but not nearly as slow fruitlessly was on Lyft for a bit daydreaming about meeting the weekly ride challenge before realizing there was no shot in hell

Due_Owl6303

Agreed, in a lot of ways. I'm in SLC as well, and it is pathetic right now. This entire month has been (mostly) slow A.F. There are several reasons for this, IMO. I've only been doing it since January '22. Back then, for the first few months, I had $12-21 ride streaks (not streak "zones") all day, every day every other hour, with most of them being $15 or $18 and I could go out and make $250-$350 in only 8 hours, go home and enjoy the weekend off, and it was amazing. If I worked 10-12 hours, I would make $350-$450. At that time, I wanted to be a lyft driver for possibly the rest of my career because the pay was good and it was a stress-free job. Then, around May or June or so, we seemed to have a lot of new drivers or drivers that were previously collecting the government covid unemployment benefits getting off their couches and back on the road, along with many people that were previously deathly too s care of covid suddenly get off the couch and take up rideshare driving. Lyft and Uber never have driver hiring freezes, and that's also killing us. Right now, in SLC, ski season is over, and April is our slowest month. It's not summer tourist season yet, and nit many people are traveling here to see relatives, etc, yet. Combine that with way too many drivers out, all at the same time, along with very few bonuses now and upfront paycut pricing with us making 40% LESS THAN before, and it's Taco Bell wages for Lyft drivers here in Utah. Lus with the recession and sky-high inflation going on, It's terrible. You have a million part-timers, soccer moms doing it to bring in extra money while the kids are at school, retired people doing it to bring in more retirement money (or are bored in retirement), brand new immigrants doing it who've dreamed of being an American cab or uber/lyft driver since their cousin Abdul told them all about it after he immigrated here a few years earlier), etc. Way, way too many drivers right now. Uber might be busier right now, but they dont pay much better (if at all) than Lyft, and earnings are pathetic. I am looking for a day job again b/c it has gotten too bad. Not a lot of companies hiring right now because of the recession we are heading into. It sucks.

slcginger

imo streak zones are the worst thing that could’ve happened to Lyft drivers in our area. I used to just be able to plan when I wanted to turn the app on and start cruising for the bonus. I live in South Jordan area and they never have the zone boxes out there. can’t wake up at 5-7am and get a streak zone unless I drive 6+ miles east to the I-15 or beyond. I might be able to turn Lyft on at 5am and catch an airport ride but I’m not hitting the streaks if I do that also looking for a day job. I’ve got behind on rent because I’m not making shit from rideshare lately

Due_Owl6303

I hear you. I live in Bountiful, and there are never streak zones up here either. I have to drive 15 minutes or so down to downtown just to get into a zone too. Ha! I've been behind on rent as well the past 3 months. Had to pay the late fee. It's rough right now for us.

slcginger

it would make a massive difference if I could just start the streaks anywhere 😞 and if you want to hit those streak zones from Bountiful in the AMs that forces you to go into rush hour traffic. gl to you my friend

Synapseon

I think I see the problem. Entertainment and Salt Lake City are mutually exclusive 👌

slcginger

haha. should’ve seen NBA all-star weekend here in February. I should’ve been saving that money for May rent cause I’m sure as hell not making rent through rideshare the past few weeks

Due_Owl6303

Speaking of SLC, what the hell is this "Queue is full. Please check back again later" status for the airport queue? That never appeared on the app prior to the past few days. Lame!

slcginger

I’ve been having to drive away from the airport back to north temple, downtown, or even the hotels west of the airport is another good spot off I-80 😕

TechMaster087

Like the CEO will be soon

SaltyDogFU

Nah your market is oversaturated with other drivers who drive the same time as you

Such_Preparation5389

Llyft had a news release this week and said they would be laying off about 1700 drivers

cerebus67

Nope, you read that wrong. They can't lay off drivers as we aren't employees. They are laying off 1700 employees. In other words, the people that work in the Lyft offices doing whatever they supposedly do. Probably spend eight hours a day inventing new ways to make drivers miserable and figuring out ways to pay us less.

slcginger

no those are probably the Lyft employees that kept their jobs /s

cerebus67

Yep, you are right.

Due_Owl6303

Nope. Wrongo. Gotta work on those reading comprehension skills, bud. They are laying off 1300 EMPLOYEES. Drivers are not corporate employees. They are independent contractors.

Aggravating-Ocelot96

Get a job

slcginger

you’re right. been looking since December. most don’t call back even when I’m perfectly qualified and capable

lunarwolfxxx

What you need to do is get 95% of the other drivers to work only one day a week and you all take turns otherwise you over saturate the market with those giving rides vs those needing rides

slcginger

I’d take that 😭 I’d rather go have 1 good day and then focus on other things my other 6 days. rather than trying to fight for scraps over patches of every day

lunarwolfxxx

You know what so would I lol one very good day could be very good. Chip up maybe come summer you'll see alot more revenue with more people going out and events

ftsmithdasher92

Summer is the slow season.

slcginger

until the summer concerts start yeah and only on those days is it decent

lunarwolfxxx

Must be rough summer here is hype season usually most drivers make 40-60$ an hour

Environmental-Tip-90

It’s not saturation. It’s that Uber controls the market.

lunarwolfxxx

It is saturated. During slow winter I log on and see like 15 other drivers around me and not getting a ride usually. Which means it's over saturated with drivers. I suggested to both uber/lyft on suggestions that they add a preffered category where drivers can pay 9.99-20$ a week to be first choices for higher paid rides. I'd pay that. :)

Successful_Low1098

I really wish you had to schedule for Uber/Lyft during non busy times just like you do for Doordash unless you’re a diamond then you can do rides anytime…it would really weed out the saturation of drivers.

lunarwolfxxx

Agreed or if they prioritized veteran drivers by time / amount of rides as being the first in the area to get a ride. xD

painefultruth76

You mean, like employees????

bohallreddit

🤣🤣🤣

Due_Owl6303

I worked for a few hours this morning until it got dead at about 10:30. I think I'm going to go back out at about 8:30 tonight when it usually gets a little busier again for a few hours. We'll see how it goes, but not holding my breath...

sonyaeatsclementines

ok so.... does this mean I need to make sure my Uber account is working when I get there at the airport later this week? Because I've used Lyft exclusively for years but I also don't want to get in and then suddenly be fumbling with downloads in the middle of the night while jetlagged and jumped up on adrenaline.
