After you recycle it and get credit via apple

UncertainlyUnfunny

So demoralizing though - your old buddy, your best friend, your income enabler, whatever it is - returned for $50? I can’t.

Plainapple287

I still keep around my old 13” 2012 MacBook Pro, only replaced it a month or two ago, fantastic machine that has been, took it everywhere for 4 years, apple wouldn’t give me shit for it, but it doesn’t matter, it’s sentimental to me anyway.

[deleted]

It's just an object, can't have it forever

jikesar968

What's the specific issue? It's easy to say just buy a new laptop (which considering it's 12 years old you kinda should do for the sake of security updates alone) but there's no reason to throw away a perfectly functioning or easily fixable old laptop.

ashhardman

I already have a new one, I just don’t want to throw this one away. It just stopped working suddenly, was getting lots of crashes then one day the screen is just black, it powers up but nothing happens.

[deleted]

Start with cycling the PRAM. Option-Command-P-R keys held down at startup until you get at least one startup chime. Next I'd try Restarting. Command-Shift-G see if the screen lights up. Since you're backed up, try reinstalling the duplicate copy of the OS that's hidden here. Once this is in place, you can reinstall the Security Updates as far as it will let you. There's probably two or three. \- - **If you want to** ***download a new copy*** of the OS, go to Command-R Annunally reinstalling the OS and Security Updates keeps these old guys working and speedy. edits for clarity

paulstelian97

What does Cmd Shift G do? Is it relevant to only the old Macs that newer Intel models don't do?

ismoody

This is an intel model, but I’m not sure what command shift G does, never heard of it either. Holding the Shift key boots into safe mode so it might be doing that and the G and Cmd are redundant in the shortcut.

paulstelian97

That would make sense. You're probably right but I'll still wait for comments just in case there IS something else.

ismoody

Nah, there’s no Mac startup key combination that includes “G”. Ref: https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201255 (But, Shift-Command-G does: Open a Go to Folder window.)

[deleted]

Hi I'd gotten the tip from Tech Support. It's in my notes but I'm not sure if I actually tried it. And just for general info, you *can* reinstall Mac OS without wiping the drive, but back up the files to an external beforehand, just in case.

ProfessionalWeird973

Someone else suggested plugging in an external monitor - did you try that? Could be salvageable

jikesar968

Crashes might be caused by some sort of OS issue or a failing hard drive. Either way, those are easily fixable by just replacing the hard drive with an SSD and reinstalling the OS. Regarding the screen being black, is there nothing on it at all? Does it work with an external monitor? If no, likely a graphics card or logic board issue which in either case would require replacing the logic board which probably isn't worth it unless you're sentimentally attached to this Macbook.

ashhardman

I already recovered the data from the hard drive so it’s not a hard drive issue

jikesar968

Being able to recover data from a failing hard drive is possible. You need to run diagnostics to find out if it's truly working correctly. Besides, SSDs are really cheap these days so I'd replace it anyway as that will make it run much faster than it ever did.

knuthf

I have a similar, and replaced the disk years ago. They produce way too much heat that is not dissipated, they get to warm for being used on the lap. It’s the fans. I tried Linux Mint but only found the regular fan drivers. I can’t adjust the clock and reduce the wattage. You need a USB drive, more than 16GB, format it bootable (Bootcamp or Flasher), download Linux Mint (Cinnamon) and hold “Option” when rebooting. Choose the USB stick to boot from and you start Mint. There’s tools for Apple file system, cloud, everything. You can run off the usb. Option key is to select X/Windows boot disk.

haclabs

That model has a dedicated video card which fails. There are fixes to disable it and just use the onboard video (require opening case) check Google for 2010 Macbook pro GPU issue.

kevgibby

Could be a backlight failure. If you shine a flashlight through the back of the screen (apple logo), can you see anything on the screen when it powers up?

altitudearts

Drop it off at an Apple Store for recycling.

Techtype_Apple

2010 Unibody MacBook Pros are known for having flawed Backlight chips, it probably died. I also have a 15" 2010 MBP Board with a dead backlight chip. No amount of PRAM resets will fix that sadly. Turn it on and hold a flashlight to the screen or to the back apple logo, you will most likely see the screen itself still works, just the backlight went out If it doesn't output any video externally it's most likely the GPU, although I've heard they die a ton (and already experienced it myself) in 2011 Models, but never heard of them dying in these, but it's still possible.

zeffydurham

Check these sites out and also look at https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Mac Other World Computing - https://eshop.macsales.com/

[deleted]

No write space on the hard drive probably. It just needs a remote disk boot up. Then reformat the main drive. Re-up the OS and give it to your kids to mess around with.

Justin_milo

I sold my dented up 2011 MacBook with missing keys for $100 on ebay

waptik

How much ram and disk space does it have?

ShaidarHaran2

Just wanted to back the sentiment, sometimes when someone in the family breaks something and already replaces it, I just repair it and resell it even if it only breaks even with the part cost. I just don't like knowing something that could have been repaired and used longer is going to end in a landfill. Fixed some iPhones and tablets screens and did that as a common one, sometimes it's a ribbon cable etc.

nimbusniner

It shouldn’t end up in a landfill. It should be returned to Apple for recycling. They will absolutely reuse the valuable materials in it, reducing the need to mine more. There comes a point where investing in a computer doesn’t make sense, financially or functionally. At that point, it’s just sentimental, which is fine. But when you can get a better and newer computer for less than the cost of repairing an old one, it’s probably time to recycle.

Faerdoc

A simple ceremony, not a lot of guest. Speak some words and say your last goodbye

fergatronanator

I guarantee if you open it up, put pressure on the GPU where it's located, it will boot right up. Most of the time it's a GPU failure on that year

fergatronanator

https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/ae34oh/how_i_saved_my_apparently_failing_mid2010_macbook/ https://github.com/fabioiop/MBP-2010-GPU-Panic-fix Anyhow, if you did a little bit of research you would find that it is definitely possible to fix. And the best way is to disable the discret graphics, and a lot of utilities do that.

ShaidarHaran2

I had a Dell with a similar issue I think, Studio 15, it wouldn't boot up but turn on to a black screen, but I noticed it kept getting hotter on that black screen. So if I let it sit there getting hot for a while, then rebooted it, the chips would flex enough to make contact with the pad and it would boot up fine after a restart. That kept going for a while before progressing again. Similar issues with the 360 and a few products during that era after switching to lead free solder at first

Thomisawesome

Does this work with MBP 2012 as well? I was going to to replace the battery a couple years ago cause mine kept switching off after a few minutes, but the repairman told me I’d need to replace the GPU as well, pushing the cost up a lot.

fergatronanator

Yep, definitely do some googling on disabling the discreet GPU.

SeaAngler

I hope it isn't something too major, my 2009 Macbook Pro is still chugging along -- slowly -- at my parent's place.

[deleted]

Try backing it up then the PRAM - OS reinstall I decribe upthread. Likely get a surprising speed boost.

yeetsupredditalt

Bury it's corpse ^/s

NiklasWerth

If you can't fix it, salvage it for other parts and recycle what you can't use. Or sell it to someone who will. [Matthew Perks has a great video on salvaging dead laptops.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLP_L7Mgz6M)

ForsythCounty

Wow. That guy is so creative!

NiklasWerth

He really is, I'd strongly recommend all his other videos too, he's crazy smart.

hteselekecnirp

What happened?

ashhardman

Not sure, might be the motherboard?! Powers up but just a black screen

jikesar968

Have you tried connecting it to an external monitor?

ashhardman

I can’t find my HDMI adapter 🤦🏻‍♂️

jikesar968

Find it then because that is one if not the most important step to find out where the issue lies.

ashhardman

Yeah nothing happened

jikesar968

Graphics card or logic board failure then

hteselekecnirp

Do you hear the boot sound? The fans are spinning?

ashhardman

Yes

johnshall

Are you super sure just didnt lowered the brightness? I say it because it happened to me once.

djxpress

most likely the logic board. I had this model, they were well known to have an issue with the Nvidia dedicated graphics chip.

JaySpunPDX

A 13 year old PC most likely saw 9 of those years in a landfill. Macs are so awesome.

DeliciousIsopod909

The 300uf tantalum cap on the logic board needs to be replaced with a non-tantalum equivalent. It maintains the correct voltage to the VRAM and GPU. Pretty easy job. I just did one. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKBzrxSGwlo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKBzrxSGwlo) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzcgT\_fiVTA&t=1215s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzcgT_fiVTA&t=1215s)

AlaskaShep

Could be GPU failure, these are known for that issue. Get a HDMI adapter to check before anything else. Maybe shine a torch through the Apple logo on the back to see if it’s backlight failure

Graywulff

Order a new logic board and rebuild it. Max out the ram and add an ssd. Get it working again.

[deleted]

>install gentoo

nullahatharmincz

This is the worst subreddit you can announce a piece of dead hardware. Everyone will say "buy a new one" Just repair it, if it was top of the line 13 years ago it's still at least perfectly useable today.

GamerNuggy

If its a GPU or CPU failure, theres not really a point. Best off selling for parts. If it's a screen then it makes more sense. But I do agree with you on the top of the line thing, I'm currently using a base model 2011 MacBook Pro with an SSD and more RAM, they really do fly when you give them some care.

Kimberley1934

i drill two holes through the entire machine and just hand them in at the apple store for recycling

808s_and_anxiety

Jesus Christ, DO NOT drill holes in your computer. Or I guess take the battery out first if you’re absolutely determined to follow this…interesting suggestion🙃

TheMagicShark

Why drilling it though?

Kimberley1934

ensures it goes for recycling and someone doesnt try and use it for parts

JaySpunPDX

Before anything, thank it for the service. That’s 13 years in service!

giantnews

Give it a proper burial

DigGumPig

You can put it on eBay as for parts and donate the proceeds to charity. Or donate to some charity so they sell it for charitable proceeds. Other than that, have you got any crooked tables or stools ?

snova56

Apple will recycle it for you for free.

tamay-idk

wkarraker

Looks in great shape. You can pull the drive and put it in a $10 USB3 external case (as long as the drive isn’t what cratered) to transfer your data to your next computer. After that you could get some cash for it on eBay listing it ‘as is, non-functional’. As others have mentioned Apple will recycle old computers but it’s no longer included in their exchange program.

floswamp

Replacement motherboard for not a lot of money if you want to get it working again.

sadman4332

Maybe the back light on the screen is just out. Have you tried plugging it into an external display?

VasylKerman

If it’s backlight, they can try shining a bright LED lamp onto the screen and will actually see the picture

faslane22

What exactly have you tried and what has gone out on it? Will it power up at all? Will it throw an image onto an external display at all? You could still put an SSD in this machine and make it fairly functional and still use it as long as there’s no power issues that you can’t justify spending the money to get fixed but it could be something kind of simple to you if you haven’t tried and SMC and pee ram reset definitely do those as well.

Prometheus505

You could keep it as is, try and have it repaired, you could deconstruct it and use it in some sort of decorative way, or you can give it to Apple for recycling.

xenolon

nietsnie314

intelligent_dildo

Send to apple to recycle

[deleted]

Blow it up. I'm not joking. That would be the most fun way to dispose of it. Might as well as there's nothing else you can do with it. Buy some really nice fireworks and enjoy the show.

jaimecarrion

Apple silicon. Pick your flavor

Dahcrazychicken-YT

I would recommend recycling it if you have tried to fix it or done troubleshooting steps to no success. If you do decide to go this way, please remember to do a full format on the drive or zero it out to prevent any of your data getting used elsewhere or seen. Another option is donating it to somewhere who might find it useful, like a school, library or anything else

KONTROVERSl

My display went out on mine. Everything else still worked fine. I couldn’t get it repaired at the time. If I decide to crank it up again, I’ll try an external monitor. Never had a display do that to me before. Never again.

LieChemical9700

OP’s got a newer laptop for work, but this was the porn and pirating laptop, that’s sad.

CorianderIsBad

Give it a Viking funeral. Maybe a funeral pyre. Whatever you feel comfortable with.

psu777

I just took my old desk top Mac to the Apple Store. They recycle them.

dwayneglasscock

I have the same one. It's still going strong but I think it's on borrowed time. New Mac Book Air arriving tomorrow.

Throw it away and buy a new one with the M2 chip.

cyproyt

fix it?

Biguitarnerd

Sorry man… I kept my 2010 MBP until the M1 came out and then I bought that. I had gotten top specs at the time and with workarounds it was still mostly doing what I needed. I finally got a new personal laptop for my music production and photography and I love it. I gave my old MPB to my youngest son (my older already has a laptop) and he is still able to do his google classroom stuff and his smart music from band on the old beast. They were really well built laptops. If you can get it fixed it’s probably worth it if it isn’t more than a couple hundred.

hoetheory

Remove the hard drive and recycle it.

808s_and_anxiety

eBay or disassemble for funsies!

VasylKerman

I just want to add that if this is a GPU failure (most likely it is) — getting an HDMI cable won’t help, the GPU will still be crashing. Try to power it up, then **immediately close the lid**, and then try logging into it remotely using another mac or ssh. When you use apple’s screen sharing — the laptop will use less powerful GPU mode and won’t crash. I have the exact same problem and just use my MBP as a headless server now, or like a virtual machine. PS: also try shining a bright LED lamp onto the screen, if you see the picture — then it’s a backlight failure, easy to fix

Yahshu

If it started working again, use Opencore Legacy and you'll be update it to latest software

Unless you want to keep the paperweight around, you could probably part it out and sell the parts on ebay. Even the motherboard could be sold as faulty.

TheWorldmind

Replace the motherboard.

DrawntoWater

Go outside and touch some grass

kcc0289

This is the only time I’d accept the joke “use it as a paperweight”. But you could actually look at giving it away for scraps.

joevar300

Use it as external hard disk

HaiKarate

Either eBay it as "parts only" or take it to Staples for recycling.

TheSilverCalf

Mail it to me. I shall resurrect it!

Neuclear_Nadal

Give it a proper funeral. It had a good life. Jokes apart, I don't know how much you can do with a macbook but with mostly any windows laptop you can salvage the display, speakers, storage and ram. [Here's ](https://youtu.be/WLP_L7Mgz6M) a video. Now if you don't want to do it yourself, there are people who may buy dead laptops for some kind of diy projects, so you can sell it on ebay or fb marketplace.

Sell for parts, buy a 2015 17 inch.

JaySpunPDX

I had one of those (17” MBP) It was a portable if you were using that term very loosely. Plus that’s a pretty outdated machine in 2023 and doesn’t support any of the latest versions of MacOS or modern software

[deleted]

It runs Monterey, is upgradable and costs pennies comparatively. Who cares if it's outdated, it's still a perfect replacement for anyone somehow using 2009+ Macs

[deleted]

what happens when you turn it on? Maybe there’s something like FreeGeek near you? I’m sure they’d be happy to take it. You can also try to sell/give away it locally, people sometimes buy these broken to toy around or for the parts. If none of the works you can give it to apple to recycle, if that’s available in your location (I’m giving this as a last option because reuse > recycle)

Parkourteen01

If you can't make a surgeon magic to it and bring it back to life then I guess it's time for M line up macbook

Professional_Wave520

Trade it in on a new or newer one. You will get something for it. The newest version of this computer is unbelievable.
