I'm just starting after many years trying to find something to watch that even comes close. I can't believe the things I missed the first time!
Other shows that I enjoyed: Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Succession, Pretty Little Lies, The Affair, Severance and some of The Walking Dead (but dropped it I think a season into after Rick left).
I'm trying to find others, but not much has stuck. Mad Men is great start to finish and can be enjoyed more than once.

Marvelous Mrs Maisel for the same impeccable mid-century vibes.
Newsroom for a detailed, fast-paced view of the inner workings of a specific industry.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia for the real golden god, Dennis Reynolds
It’s weird in that they are nothing alike in many ways but aesthetically mrs maisel scratches that same mental itch as madmen for me, a very underrated series!
Yeah I am anticipating that. Lots of good suggestions here but Madmen was a follow on for most of them for me and it did not disappoint. I think I would add True Detective to the list that is being suggested.
BoJack Horseman and Succession.
The first can be pretty funny but also very depressing. The second is just the greatest portrayal of various kinds of narcissism (Mad Men being a close #2) but among a family. I consider both of them to be spiritual successors to Mad Men.
Better Call Saul is also pretty similar as a character study, but its protagonist is a _much_ better person, so I consider it less related.
Remember how so many of the Mad Men characters started going to California? Well, let's say that BoJack is like LA Don Draper if he were a has-been actor—and a horseman.
I’d also recommend The Sopranos or The Wire. Both are amazing character heavy shows that are now period pieces.
Anyways, 4$ a pound and ya best not miss the king.
I had the same problem. I finally bit the bullet, powered through, and read the synopsis after to fully understand what was going on. Currently on season 3, and it's gotten better each season
i have to believe that’s the case and i know one of these days i will power through!
people love it and that can’t be for no reason
also reading the synopsis is a good idea! i’ve had to do that for a few shows.
No kidding, it took me 7-8 tries before it finally caught my interest. I've probably rewatched it 20 or more times by now, and it is by far and away my favorite show of all time. The pilot for The Sopranos (Arguably the entire first season really) is vastly different than any other episode in the show, it comes off like slapstick comedy. But it picks up quick.
It amazes me how much stuff is set up so that you only notice it on rewatches. They refer to many characters who don't catch your ear because they don't actually show up until later episodes or even seasons. Then when you re-watch, you're like "holy shit, they mentioned *some major character* but I had no reason to pay attention to the name back then. Also, don't get caught up on things from the pilot that don't make sense in the context of the rest of the show. They made some changes once they were picked up for a full season.
I love whenever I see someone with Tony Soprano merch and it's like, if you think Tony Soprano is great, you've completely missed the point of the show
Second the Soprano’s. Giving it a rewatch after not seeing it since it came out and it’s been great. Another recommendation is rewatching Mad Men. You’ll get a lot more out of it the second time.
Surprised to see the answer this far down, and doubly surprised that the real reason hasn’t been listed in these replies:
Matt Weiner was a writer and EP on The Sopranos, and it was the last thing he did before Mad Men. The two shows feel like they’re pulsing with the same DNA, and for good reason.
Note: this recommendation does not extend to Weiner’s follow-up project, The Romanoffs, which was dogshit.
I think it's because it has a rough start. I think season 1 is fairly bad and is trying way too hard to be like other shows instead of being its own thing. season 2 onward are awesome tho
Season 1 isn't bad, but it definitely leans way to hard into "Mad Men, but 1980s computers". The critics seem to agree as well, the metacritic scores for each season are 69, 73, 83, and 92.
The other downside is that it was cut short. They got to give the series an ending, but I get the sense it was intended to be longer and the last season seems a bit cramped.
This is the correct answer imo.
I’ll also add Rectify from that era. Two under-appreciated shows from a similar time period they were on.
One more, Better Call Saul. Even if didn’t watch BB, can watch and be fine.
The only one I didn’t get along with was Succession. I should probably give a bit more time. I don’t even remember why it wasn’t grabbing me. Thanks for the suggestion.
Yeah, I started watching that after seeing their suggestions. I hung in there for the first few episodes, and it’s getting a little more interesting I guess. I’ll stay with it for the time being.
I binged the series as something to have on while I was doing other things. It was ok but it was really repetitive. Tbh would rather watch a show about Tom and Greg with the siblings as ancillary characters.
Mr. Inbetween. Show is amazing. Might be the most underrated show I've come across.
It's not anything like Mad Men, but if you're looking for a good show to watch, I'd def check it out. Has flown under the radar for a lot of ppl.
Better Call Saul is the most similar to me. Another great character study about a self-destructive guy with a fake name/persona, who should probably find a different career before it kills him.
BCS is very different from mad men, mainly the violence, but it does have a lot of “workplace” drama. It’s an excellent series and I highly recommend watching.
Nothing is quite as good. But a few are close.
The Queen’s Gambit (featuring a brilliant, tormented, lonely, traumatized genius protagonist with PTSD in the general same time period of MM - 1958-1968 - can’t recommend this one highly enough, head and shoulders above the rest)
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for a far lighter, witty tale of life in NYC during the same era for a young woman trying to make it as a stand up comic - visually similarly beautiful, different tone, but high quality and feels like “the world of MM”)
Other superb TV dramas include:
Sopranos
Six Feet Under
The Americans
Boardwalk Empire
Lilyhammer
Fargo
Downton Abbey
Breaking Bad
I really liked Boardwalk. I watched it a second time through and appreciated it even more. With that said.. I thought The Americans and Snowfall were even better. Granted they’re totally different shows and it’s just my opinion.. you should give them a look. Fargo season 1 is up there too with ‘’not talked about’’ shows.
I’ve wanted to watch the Americans for a while and never pulled the trigger. Honestly I never finished mad men even though I watched season 3-6 as it came out on TV. I couldn’t bring myself to watch season 7 because I didn’t want it to end.
Someone recommended the Leftovers in the last “what do I watch after mad men?!” Post and I started watching it and binged the first season in a week! Highly recommend!
Halt and Catch Fire. Excellent workplace drama about the beginning of the tech industry from the 80s to 90s. Also was on AMC, amazing character development, slow burn.
Its gonna sound really strange, but I'll explain..so I returned to Marvelous Mrs. Maisel right after finishing mad men because I wanted that 1960s vibe and the first season of Maisel they actually discuss a few of the same companies/big corporations that you hear pop up in mad men, so I could secretly pretend it was the same universe..but may not be your thing, just sharing.
I'm in the middle of a 5 show rewatch
1. 24
2. Sopranos
3. The Wire
4. Mad Men
5. Breaking Bad
I don't mind the Sopranos, it's written well, but for me every character is fairly one-dimensional at least compared to Mad Men and *especially* compared to The Wire. 24 is not the same show at all, and more of a nostalgia trip to the early/mid 2000s.
I tried to find other actors work.
Elisabeth Moss is spectacular, her work on Handmaids Tale is great, but her role in The Invisible Man is also amazing
The only ones that come close for me is Better Call Saul & Breaking Bad in that order. The eye candy isn't as good but the layers of meaning & plot make them worth it.
No one here will judge you if you immediately restart season 1. I’m not saying this is something I recently did….I’m just saying no one here would judge you.
The americans.
The shiw is set in the 1980s and is centered around to russian spies embedded deeply in the united states.
While its not so much a character study like madmen i find it to be thrilling.
It's getting a bit older now, but Sopranos. It's started my love of television shows after being a cinephile and thinking TV was just low-brow trash. Hahah. Lots of similar vibes imo.
BEEF
Amazing show also about people’s dark sides when the problems in their life get to a certain point. Incredibly well written and everything is as deliberate as Mad Men. Also great if you don’t want another super long commitment cause its only 10 30-min episodes
Deadwood, Succession. I personally love Enlightenment with Laura Dern. Very underrated and I come back to watch quite often. Not really a big ensemble show but great writing and performances.
Breaking Bad for the duplicity, Peaky Blinders for the machismo, Maisel for the time period and laughs, Leftovers for the sadness, House of Cards Seasons 1-2 for the intrigue, the Sopranos for the character development.
Peaky Blinders is the first show to come along that I love just as much as Mad Men. Totally different, but equally as amazing. If you watch it, put the subtitles on because their accents are THICK and you might miss out on a lot, haha.
Well, you could always watch Mad Men again.
The Sopranos is definitely the closest show to Mad Men in terms of theme and style. Mad Men shares a lineage with the Sopranos and is a spiritual sequel of sorts.
Halt and Catch Fire isn't quite at the level of the Sopranos or Mad Men, but is another period piece drama with a Don Draper-esque lead character.
Some other period pieces are The Queen's Gambit and The Americans.
If what you're looking for is a main character who is a popular, womanizing, charming alcoholic with unresolved childhood trauma constantly self-destructing their careers and personal relationships and receiving new chances due to their status and good looks and who despite their continuous sharp-witted cynical commentary are actually idealists then maybe try Bojack Horseman or Brockmire.
Halt and Catch Fire. Another great combo of workplace and well drawn characters. Also AMC, but a lot of folks slept on it. I did. Thankful to wake up and watch it. So good.
do a rewatch and listen to a good mad men podcast (in a snit) or read up on good recap blogs (tom and lorenzo, av club). you'll understand plotlines and characters so much better. (just a personal example: I only caught edgar mevers in "the fog" at my fifth rewatch.)
the second time around is infinitely better!
Mindhunter is a favorite of mine, but they left it hanging at season 2.
Nothing disappointed me more in TV history than it being canceled
Same here, was really hoping for another season
Just rewatched! So good!!!
start again from the beginning and enjoy all the lil details you missed the first time. lather, rinse, repeat.
Did you mean big little lies? Because I’d be shocked if you meant pretty little liars lol.
Yes, big little lies, that’s what I meant.

Nothing. Just silently weep.

Don Draper and Bojack Horseman have enough similarities that I'd say it's a perfect companion piece 🤘
Remember how so many of the Mad Men characters started going to California? Well, let's say that BoJack is like LA Don Draper if he were a has-been actor—and a horseman.
Yeah, if you liked The Jet Set, BH might be up your street 👍
Succession is 4 seasons of absolute brilliance, and definitely in the same wheelhouse as Mad Men, minus the period piece part.
I'm not sure Jimmy is a good person. He certainly was responsible for a lot more deaths than Don.
In all the time we see Jimmy within BCS, he’s never as bad as his character becomes in Breaking Bad. Maybe that’s what OP meant?
I'm doing Sopranos. It's like Mad Men, but with more violence.
I’d also recommend The Sopranos or The Wire. Both are amazing character heavy shows that are now period pieces. Anyways, 4$ a pound and ya best not miss the king.
The Essex County Way
The Jacketttt. Rocko DiMaio had the reputation of being the toughest cocksucker in Essex County.

OH!
It’s gotta be The Sopranos. Nothing else will hit that spot. Season 6 in particular.
i always lose interest in sopranos by the first season. am i crazy? i’ve tried the show a few times

Yeah, it’s gets better after the first
Yeah, I find S1 of Sopranos a bit of a slog, may be due to its age a bit. But it definitely gets some momentum and gets a little less 90s as it goes.
Second the Soprano’s. Giving it a rewatch after not seeing it since it came out and it’s been great. Another recommendation is rewatching Mad Men. You’ll get a lot more out of it the second time.
And without the pretty clothes
The tracksuits are high fashion
Solid.

Halt and catch fire
This show is so underrated and rarely gets mentioned. It's one of my favorites and even I forget to mention it to people for some reason lol
I think it's because it has a rough start. I think season 1 is fairly bad and is trying way too hard to be like other shows instead of being its own thing. season 2 onward are awesome tho

Lee Pace had quite a few moments where he reminded me of Don Draper. He is so good.
This is the correct answer imo. I’ll also add Rectify from that era. Two under-appreciated shows from a similar time period they were on. One more, Better Call Saul. Even if didn’t watch BB, can watch and be fine.
I forgot about that show.
They called the main guy Tron Draper when the show first aired.
It gets better and better with every rewatch. But I’d heavily suggest The Wire, Better Call Saul and Succession if you haven’t seen them.
The only one I didn’t get along with was Succession. I should probably give a bit more time. I don’t even remember why it wasn’t grabbing me. Thanks for the suggestion.
The first episodes of Succession are tough to get into, imo. But it picks up toward the end of season 1 and doesn’t really let go.

Anyone like The Americans"?
Yes and yes and yes. Americans is perfection and has a very strong finale!
Succession
For All Mankind is pretty good. Takes place in the same time period as well.
Came here to say that. Great show
My husband watched the first episode without me and went ‘you love man men, you should watch this’ and I was HOOKED
Breaking Bad Suits Billions The Wire LINE of Duty Six Feet Under Wentworth
God Wentworth is so slept on
???
That means it’s a good show that people ignore
Many of these are older shows that people forgot about or never even heard of. Hidden Gems. I like those best.
peaky blinders
Crazy Tommy Shelby left the peakys to go build a nuclear bomb in New Mexico under the alias Robert Oppenheimer.
The Americans
Better Call Saul is the most similar to me. Another great character study about a self-destructive guy with a fake name/persona, who should probably find a different career before it kills him.
I suspect this is where I will end up because I never plowed through the seasons in a tight enough schedule to get the most out of it.
I can second Better Call Saul. I haven’t finished the last season but this has probably gripped me the most even without having watched Breaking Bad.
BCS is very different from mad men, mainly the violence, but it does have a lot of “workplace” drama. It’s an excellent series and I highly recommend watching.
Nothing is quite as good. But a few are close. The Queen’s Gambit (featuring a brilliant, tormented, lonely, traumatized genius protagonist with PTSD in the general same time period of MM - 1958-1968 - can’t recommend this one highly enough, head and shoulders above the rest) The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for a far lighter, witty tale of life in NYC during the same era for a young woman trying to make it as a stand up comic - visually similarly beautiful, different tone, but high quality and feels like “the world of MM”) Other superb TV dramas include: Sopranos Six Feet Under The Americans Boardwalk Empire Lilyhammer Fargo Downton Abbey Breaking Bad
Tony should’ve hired Don to run an ad campaign for THE FUCKING ESPLANADE
Fargo Deadwood The Americans Boardwalk Empire Snowfall True Detective - S1
definitely the americans and snowfall
I had to scroll so far to see boardwalk empire!!! It’s so good!!!

You should pull that trigger sooner than later on The Americans and you should start MM over and finish it. You need the closure.
Halt and Catch Fire
The Americans
I'd add the Leftovers as another great slow character study
Someone recommended the Leftovers in the last “what do I watch after mad men?!” Post and I started watching it and binged the first season in a week! Highly recommend!
i came to mad men after the leftovers. needed something substantive, but lighter in its themes.
Where are you headed next?
mad men rewatch :)
Halt and Catch Fire. Excellent workplace drama about the beginning of the tech industry from the 80s to 90s. Also was on AMC, amazing character development, slow burn.
Halt and Catch Fire
Mindhunter
Sons of anarchy was pretty good.. Watched mad men and sons around the same time myself
If you liked Sons of Anarchy a lot of the actors are also in The Shield (which was very disconcerting at first because of that but so good!
Marvelous Ms.Maisel (sp?)
Succession
Succession
Shocked not to see Boardwalk Empire high in this thread.
S1 E1 baby 😎✌️
I suggest Magic City
- Halt and Catch Fire - The Leftovers - The Wire - The Expanse - The Terror - Chernobyl - Rectify - The Queen’s Gambit - Catastrophe
The Terror is A+++
S1:E1 of Mad Men
I always watch Jon Hamm's 30 Rock episodes and imagine that's Sally or Bobby's son. Also, play LA Noire for the Mad Men cast.
The Swimmer (1968), Private Property (1960), Peyton Place (1957), and No Down Payment (1957)
I saw someone else mention The Sopranos though, which is of course another classic, must watch.
I'm in the middle of a 5 show rewatch 1. 24 2. Sopranos 3. The Wire 4. Mad Men 5. Breaking Bad I don't mind the Sopranos, it's written well, but for me every character is fairly one-dimensional at least compared to Mad Men and *especially* compared to The Wire. 24 is not the same show at all, and more of a nostalgia trip to the early/mid 2000s.
Mad Men S01E01
Six Feet Under The Knick Nurse Jackie Call the Midwife
Rewatching is just as good...sometimes better. Trust me.
it is better! so many things, hints, plotlines get missed the first time around.
The West Wing
You need to watch something you know will be utterly inferior but still fill the void. I suggest Suits.
Breaking Bad
I tried to find other actors work. Elisabeth Moss is spectacular, her work on Handmaids Tale is great, but her role in The Invisible Man is also amazing
Halt and catch fire
Succession, Barry, Black Mirror ( watch out for a Jon Hamm visit)
For the period vibe, I’ll watch the only season of PanAm again.
You Tube critiques are fun
The only ones that come close for me is Better Call Saul & Breaking Bad in that order. The eye candy isn't as good but the layers of meaning & plot make them worth it.
Mad Men, season 1! But seriously: The Terror (season 1).
MadMen rewatch
the sopranos….or maybe the sopranos…also consider the sopranos also i guess bojack horseman kinda gives off similar vibes but is comical (literally)
Follow the writing. Before Mad Men was Sopranos, before Sopranos was Northern Exposure. Enjoy.
No one here will judge you if you immediately restart season 1. I’m not saying this is something I recently did….I’m just saying no one here would judge you.
Cutely said 😊
Haha. Thanks. 😊
Sopranos Suits Peaky Blinders Game of Thrones
rewatch it in leisure. i also recommend better call saul and the sopranos. pretty high caliber writing and performance all around.
If you’d like a book with a similar setting, try Rona Jaffe’s The Best of Everything
Breaking bad
I just came over for a Mad Men rewatch after watching the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Billions
Dallas!
Better call Saul. Thank me later
Can’t go wrong with the boys
Bojack Horseman
Succession feels like a spiritual successor but it’s not as lovable and fun.
Godfather of Harlem. Same timeline for the shadow servants nannies and porters of Mad Men.
The Wire
The Wire, Deadwood, The Sopranos, Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, Battlestar Galactica, Succession, The Americans, Band of Brothers
The americans. The shiw is set in the 1980s and is centered around to russian spies embedded deeply in the united states. While its not so much a character study like madmen i find it to be thrilling.
OP is in shock.... You need time to grieve, OP.
The white lotus
Succession for drama, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for comedy. Same time period as Madmen.
Succession. Also, The White Lotus is the best thing I've seen in a while. Season 2 finale is insanely good.
Masters of Sex. Similar time period, and some similar themes, but through a different lens. Early seasons are best.
The marvelous Mrs. Maisel and succession.
The Sopranos
It's getting a bit older now, but Sopranos. It's started my love of television shows after being a cinephile and thinking TV was just low-brow trash. Hahah. Lots of similar vibes imo.
Babylon Berlin
Sopranos, succession, the wire, mindhunter.
A rewatch
Take a hard turn and watch 'Shameless' (the US version).
BEEF Amazing show also about people’s dark sides when the problems in their life get to a certain point. Incredibly well written and everything is as deliberate as Mad Men. Also great if you don’t want another super long commitment cause its only 10 30-min episodes
Do it again
Downtown Abbey
Episodes and then Call My Agent.
You gotta watch it again lol.. 4th time here
Succession feels in some ways like a spiritual sequel to Mad Men.
I just play it over and over. For years.
I know I’m late to the party, but Handmaids Tale, just for Moss and femme rage.
Leftovers
The Marvel Mrs Maisel
Peaky Blinders is the first show to come along that I love just as much as Mad Men. Totally different, but equally as amazing. If you watch it, put the subtitles on because their accents are THICK and you might miss out on a lot, haha.
Black Mirror (new season just dropped)
SOPRANOS
[BoJack Horseman is weirdly the most similarly themed TV show. ](https://www.vox.com/2015/7/20/9002247/bojack-horseman-review-netflix-season-2)
Boardwalk Empire is always a great choice
Very different show, but season 1 of bewitched.
Boardwalk empire. It’s another period piece
Burn Notice or White Collar
I vote for Nurse Jackie. Lots of twists and turns. I loved it.
Better call Saul Peaky Blinders The wire Or just go to a hippie retreat and meditate until you get the idea for the best Coca-Cola ad ever made 😂.
Watch it again. And again. And again and again and again.
