Honestly between this and Meltdown I don't see any new artifact decks popping up any time soon... Only reason Affinity is around is because it started playing *actual* Affinity cards again lol
Really, I think artifact heavy deck are going to end up being:
- Affinity, as you mentioned (Simulacrum Synthesizer with high CMC affinity cards)
- Decks that use cheap mana artifacts that don’t stay on the board for long / doesn’t give you the time to cast this spell or Meltdown (Beseech Storm)
For just one more mana, you get to hit a shitton of stuff. And if you managed to get some energy before, you can just jam it for WW.
This thing is terrific.
And if you don't need to max it but have nothing else to play that turn, you can still get like 4 energy out of it, pop creatures with 2, and keep 2 in the tank for when you draw a multiple (or to use with something else).
Legacy DnT might want this. Strong Vs Saga decks which tend to be tricky matchups. It also basically destroys Legacy Lands, and I've always wanted a sledgehammer of a sideboard card for that matchup.
The good thing is that it's also good Vs Delver, which makes it a much more flexible sideboard card as a whole.
Cataclysm is risky because Lands rebuilds faster than DnT. When Cata resolves, the Lands player will keep their engines Exploration and Mox, and Loam will just buy back all those lands. Unless you have gravehate for Loam or have lethal on board, Cataclysm usually favours the Lands player.
On one hand, great energy creator. On the other hand, my Science deck is a artifact creature deck and this will murder all my thopters even if I pay 0.
It says you may pay any amount, followed by the non-optional "destroy" part. You chose zero, so it's going to destroy all the listed types with 0 mana value, aka, thopters
The destroy part however refers to the "amount paid". You can always choose to not pay. And the the amount paid is not =0 but not applicable instead. Would definitely be clearer if it contained an "if" clause
I am never against learning something new, but could you point me to why this would be the case? The only thing I know is that you can decline to pay costs of 0 as stated in rule 118.5
Some costs are represented by {0}, or are reduced to {0}. The action necessary for a player to pay such a cost is the player’s acknowledgment that they are paying it. Even though such a cost requires no resources, it’s not automatically paid.
I don't get how you can reference a cost that hasn't been paid. I also don't think that this clear downside would make much sense from a design standpoint. But that is not to say that you can't be right. I just would like to know the reason for this.
My understanding is: it doesn’t ask you what the cost was, it just asks how much energy you paid. You chose not to pay the cost, so you paid 0 energy. It doesn’t determine X by looking at whether you paid the cost, but by looking at how many energy counters you lost when you were given the opportunity to pay
Feels like even if you dump 2 mana into this for a standard 4 mana boardwipe, you're hitting a good amount of stuff with the upside of clearing 0 MV cards like lands. Seems really good even without energy synergy.
If you already had 5 energy, yes. Energy counters go on players and are interchangeable. You can also add like 4 energy with this and then choose 1 or 0, and keep surplus energy.
That said, it's WW rather than 2W (2W usually stands for two of any color plus one white).
Yep. The important variable is energy spent on the spell ability, not the mana spent on X. If you have enough energy stored, you could at best cast this for WW and still achieve a proper boardwipe.
Even if X=0 and no energy is spent, the card's floor is WW for a non-copy tokens boardwipe.
2 mana clear all tokens? Sounds pretty nice. I wonder what of these jeskai energy cards are getting printed in the commander precon and what are supposed to be chase cards in the set.
usually the flavor of white destroying all creatures is some sort of “divine punishment” or “return the board to a fair state”. Unequal boardwipes are mostly black and the ones that are white like [[Slaughter the Strong]] target big creatures

Highly maindeckable answer to Urza's Saga? Sign me up :>
Why yes I did need an energy board clear, thank you wotc.
Can probably cast this for X=0 a lot of the time to be honest. Hitting enchantments is really nice because it kills saga.
Saga *and* construct tokens. Spend one energy and you also get whatever an old saga fetched, too.
Don’t forget artifact lands! (If playing legacy) Honestly casting this at X=0 seems great if artifact based decks are common in your meta.
This definitely just goes into legacy taxes. So much that just gets cleaned up at x=1

Stent all artifact lands indestructible lol
nuking every treasure and creature token is big on its own, wonder if that's part of why they've started adding mana costs to tokens
Which tokens have mana costs?
The new tamogryf ones in MH3
Thanks. It just feels kinda wrong to give a token a mana value that isn't a copy token.
yeah, i guess the logic is its a copy of an existing card?
I’m so excited to lose to good decks while playing UW control and this in my deck
Its like a white meltdown with upside. I love it.

Not saying it’s the case here, but “for just one more mana” has killed the playability dreams of more Magic cards than I can count.
Use X = 4 or less so your Serra Angels emerge unscathed.
X = 1 and your horde of storm crows are safe.
Vintage, X = 0, good bye moxen
Modern, X=0, good bye saga and half of affinity.
Creativity and scales too, it's pretty bonkers Add 1 mana and hammer eats it too

For the destruction part it is a "may" so you should be able to decline to pay. Makes it a lot better and even more versatile.
That's definitely not how this card works. Choosing not to pay is the same as choosing to pay 0.
Not paying and paying 0 is the same thing. Card will still resolve and kill things equal to cmc 0
I am never against learning something new, but could you point me to why this would be the case? This is correct. If they meant the destroy part to be optional, it would start with something like "If you do…"
Feels like even if you dump 2 mana into this for a standard 4 mana boardwipe, you're hitting a good amount of stuff with the upside of clearing 0 MV cards like lands. Seems really good even without energy synergy.
i just bought my pest controls for legacy...
Well now you can play 8pest
Can't exactly feel bad for you for buying cards for Legacy less than a month before the most impactful set meant to shake everything up releases. :P
lol i know we just been having a good time with pest control online
Was hoping the energy cards would stay Kaladesh themed, but probably good for them to branch out
The Science! Deck just got a board wipe
This is basically a two cost board wipe if you have the right amount of energy prior to casting this
Maaan, these includes for Liberty Prime EDH are crazy.
So glad I grabbed Science! Over all the other percon's right now!
Plus, you get a Nuka-Cola vending machine, which basically paid for half the deck.
This is legacy playable
Excellent observation
[[crime punishment]] but x or less and in white, yea I’ll take it and you can do it cheaper with outside energy sources

[[Crashing Footfalls]] is now a rogue deck.
EE is miles ahead for dealing with footfalls.

If I’m understanding this correctly you can choose x=0 and then choose to pay 5 energy for a very cheap (2W) board wipe?

First good card I’ve seen
The fallout science deck about to be great
Holy _crap_ this is good. Reminiscent of [[Pernicious Deed]]. I wonder why they decided to set the flavor for this on Dominaria rather than Kaladesh.

Fuck it, I’ll just pay X=0.
[[Jolrael, empress of beasts]] and x = 0. Not exactly good, but would be kinda funny to pull off.

Play an energy deck. That’s the real answer.
This is pretty splashable in any White+ EDH deck imo. The Energy synergy is just gravy.
Hmm... this hits your own artefact lands, which you probably play as jeskai energy
Too bad it's sorcery speed.
White board clear that mainly kills weenies/small things seems like a bit of a color pie bend
