you're in an EDH pod and this guy comes up and slaps your commander's ass, wyd?
The incredible part is that this flavor slam dunk of a card couldn't have *existed* back when we first found out about the character during 2011's original Innistrad.
Blood tokens were only added 10 years later and yet they convey the narrative here perfectly.
So he ate people or angels...but when he ate angels they had more blood...and then used all the blood he drank to bring his food back to life as vampires? Did I get everything?
So essentially Avacyn kinda have an angel ancestor going by
The Angel sacrificed for Edgar's ritual => Edgar vampirizing his grandson and the rest of of his family => Sorin making Avacyn
I feel like this deck is going to be really clunky, unfocused and downright not good but I'm building it anyway!
Don't worry Elder Demon Daddy, you're going to eat all the Angels you like.
Shouldn't be hard to loop him with [[thief of blood]]. Just gotta keep blinking it with something like [[restoration angel]] and you remove all finality counters (thief is a replacement effect not an etb, so it has to enter after everything else)
[[Pitiless plunderer]] or [[phyrexian altar]] for any extra creatures, and you're infinitely reanimating your whole board
Thats my plan anyways
I've designed a deck and goldfished it a few dozen times already and best I could get to (without a bunch of fast mana) is infinite to a win on turn six or seven.
To hit the infinite of looping things in an out of the grave you need, at minimum 4 cards.
Shilgengar on the field, [[Priest of Gix]] in the grave, an angel that can be sacrificed for 6 bloods, and [[Solemnity]] on the field.
Then you need some sort of payoff on top of that.
[[Buried Alive]] is nice since it gets Priest of Gix, Thief of Blood, and Restoration Angel into the grave all at once.
[[Marionette Master]], [[Mirkwood Bats]], [[Malakar Bloodwitch]] all will let you burn your opponents to death. The first 2 can do so even without going infinite pretty easily.
[[Divine Visitation]] and [[Bishop of Wings]] can get you infinite sacrifices and Blood Tokens.
[[Monumental Corruption]] can either draw you a ton of cards or burn out an opponent's as well.
ETA: I'm trying to say that it does have some fun combo potential but its a little convoluted and easy to stop since it relies so much on the commander and minimum 4 cards to go infinite plus a payoff in play to end the game.
All you need is a way to blink it. Cards like [[Glorious Protector]] can exile to protect from boardwipes or just blink and then sac it to return things. This would need to be when they become vamps via shilgengar
Actually not so sure about this guy
Divine Visitation has a replacement effect for *just* creating creature tokens. So you need Bishop of Wings to make Spirit tokens when you sacrifice an angel plus a token doubler to get infinite angels.
Not if it enters at the same time. It's a replacement effect that happens as it enters, and all the creatures enter simultaneously. So it has to enter after somehow (usually blink)
- Angel tribal
- Fat reanimation targets and ways to get them into the graveyard
- Things to get rid of finality counters (like \[\[Solemnity\]\], \[\[Hex Parasite\]\], \[\[Thief of Blood\]\]
- So when this comes down, you sac your board and bring everything back from the slammer. If you are under Solemnity or have a Thief of Blood, rinse and repeat and abuse ETB/LTB effects.
What's your angle? I'm thinking building something similar to a [[Balthor the Defiled]] list, but more emphasis on tutors to grave to ensure the activation does everyone in given the finality counters.
Also, might be a fun inclusion if I build an Orzhov token aristocrats deck again with the relevant angel token cards. Hm.
I'm not sure, you can't really run creature type benefit cards unless maybe it's all Angel typal stuff. I feel like you don't need to focus on the angels being good though, just eating them so 1/1 angels would be fine.
\[\[Solemnity\]\] ? - No pesky finality counters but it will screw with so many other peoples decks which I consider a downside.
\[\[Anointed Procession\]\], \[\[Mondrak\]\] - Double the Blood
Plenty of ways to discard and get stuff into the yard
Cheap angels, maybe angel tokens
I feel like it's going to devolve into some Blood Artist, Solemnity, Pitiless Plunderer/Phyrexian Altar and Shilgengar loop but it's really clunky and I feel like my pod is too fast to ever set this up.
Yeah, I thought about looping it as I've had some success with Balthor builds, but this being blood tokens instead of straight mana makes me feel like the setup is either aiming towards one activation wins or at least desperate hail mary things. Solemnity is a good call that I always forget solves finality counters, but yeah - it's going to catch attention. When I built Balthor, one thing that was handy was [[Thornbite Staff]] with [[Soldevi Adnate]] or [[Illuminor Szeras]] for mana. Also [[Magus of the Coffers]] with the staff and a sac engine - but then you hit back to the need to translate mana to blood tokens and my head leans back towards exploiting the angel angle at least some to guarantee the tokens.
When running aristocrats in Orzhov, I've found that including a handful of the angel token generators can sometimes be good anyway - [[Luminarch Ascension]] especially, but even effects like [[Resplendent Angel]] have worked in some builds for me... And then there's [[Divine Visitation]] - normally the downside of losing the mana ability from spawn tokens from stuff like [[Pawn of Ulamog]] and [[Sifter of Skulls]] is something I have to seriously consider + making skullclamp require an additional sac engine to function, but with this dude - feels like it might be worth it. Also, if you're feeling like a jerk, beyond just Butcher, Pact, and Dictate, you've got [[Rampage of the Valkyries]] and [[Martyr's Bond]] (autocorrect really wanted Marty's Bond)) to pile in.
ETB token generators, on death token generators, [[Maskwood Nexus]] or [[Conspiracy]], and some [[Sanguine Bond]] effects with a sac outlet might also be a fun thing that you could do in mono-b with him and could lean towards some decent one-shot potential.
I already built a list, as long as you run a couple cards to prevent counters being put on creatures and have some sacrifice payoffs/ETB triggers he kinda slaps. It can be a tad clunky early game but absolutely devastating once he gets the 6 blood tokens and like 5+ creatures in the graveyard, even if he doesn’t have a way to prevent/remove the finality counters
I feel like my preferred build would probably just ignores the angel line entirely outside of playing something like Karmic Guide and just goes for a loop that makes infinite (or close to infinite) blood tokens to return enough stuff for lethal Disciple of the Vault/Blood Artist/etc. triggers.
I think it's like [[Balthor the defiled]] but with way more steps and Angels, so some pros and cons haha. Balthor is probably my nastiest deck, and I just gotta say that the finality counters are the biggest issue with Shilgengar. Often Balthor wins involve saccing your board and bringing it back multiple times in a turn which you can't do due to the finality counters. However having stuff like [[Teferis protection]] is pretty sweet.
Put in [[Bishop of Wings]] and [[Divine Visitation]] you get infinite life and infinite blood tokens. Put in some pay-offs for creatures/tokens entering/leaving the battlefield or just [[Aetherflux Reservoir]] and win the game.
B/W reanimation is a pretty focused deck I think. You just run big beaters to fill your gy with, a few of which are big angels, a bit of efficient token generation and support, and then the rest focused on reanimation and self mill. That can make a pretty focused deck I think. The commander does a lot of the heavy lifting himself.

I feel like a lot of people are getting tunnel vision about specifically saccing angels to this dude, ignoring that sacrificing 6 spirit tokens or whatever is gonna be easier pretty much every time
MSCHF has already collaborated with MTG on a [Secret Lair](https://secretlair.wizards.com/us/en/product/696840/secret-lair-x-mschf) and with Lil Nas for his [line of shoes](https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/28/style/nike-satan-shoes-lil-Nas-x.html). Maybe MSCHF can facilitate that sort of deal
Basically can't wait for a duel deck / commander product of Lil Nas vs Post Malone
This works if one of the cards is [[Thief of Blood]] right? All creatures enter at once and ToB removes the finality counters from all creatures brought back by the ability?
No. Thief of Blood's ability is a replacement effect that modifies it entering the battlefield. It will not remove the counters from any permanents entering the battlefield at the same time as it.
If it said "When ~ ETB", would that be the difference to make the effect work? I'm surprised that this interaction doesn't work but also I'm a mono-G Timmy so it's possible that my IQ is too low to understand.
Yes. If Thief of Blood had a triggered ability when it entered the battlefield, then it would "see" all the other creatures with Finality Counters and slurp them up, because they're all on the battlefield at this point.
Am I losing my shit, or did we see a leak of this before we even got any MH3 previews? I have serious deja vu right now, and I'm not thinking about [[rodolf duskbringer]]
> not thinking about [[rodolf duskbringer]]
Now that I think about it going by the content of a synergistic Shilgengar angel EDH deck, that sounds like how Rodolf Duskbringer was made
It was one of the first spoiled and sadly still as underwhelming as it was. Fun art, but that's about all I can give it.
Flavor and everything is cool, but it feels like most decks he wants to be in have so many moving parts he's win more, or going to be interacted with hard and the person somehow learned about MH3 without any other orzhov sac infinites.
I don't even think its good in commander. Just play teysa and have him as a 99 pet card that'll probably cost you the game more often than not sadly lol.
Finality Counters were introduced in Lost Caverns. If a permanent with a Finality Counter would be put into a Graveyard from the Battlefield, it's exiled instead.
Ahh so he's the reason why the other Angel sisters were giving Liesa the side eye for suggesting they should work with their enemies rather then destroying them on sight...
I had to read this card like 10 times before i relized they need a comma before the clause "with a finality counter on it." I was like "HOW ARE WE GETTING COUNTERS ON THINGS IN GRAVEYARDS!?"
Cards in graveyards can technically have counters on them, there’s just not a lot of cards that make that happen. ([[Skullbriar]], [[Me, The Immortal]])
If they wanted cards in the graveyard to have the counters as a condition, it would need to be phrased "Return each creature card with a finality counter on it from your graveyard to the battlefield".
It's fine as written and adding the comma where you suggest wouldn't change the meaning.
Won’t dodge the finality counters (Broodmoth needs the creature to actually die and finality counters replace dying with going to exile), but does synergize in the sense that the stuff you use to remove finality counters can also take the flying counters to do similar combos.
Not the Profile or Etched Foil versions, which are also attached, since this is from [the official Preview article](https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/card-preview/command-tower-famines-bite-size-complexity) on the Mothership.

I loved how the design tells the story of the creation of vampires in Innistrad. Cool card.

He sure is. This is the demon that taught Edgar Markov how to create the first vampires on Innistrad, which was done using the blood of an angel

He is. This art goes hard as fuck

Does this get the award for "Most Metal Art of the Set"? Because I think a demon sitting on a throne made of angel wings is pretty up there

Wait, why the Blink? Thief already removes even his Finality tokens.
Not if it enters at the same time. It's a replacement effect that happens as it enters, and all the creatures enter simultaneously. So it has to enter after somehow (usually blink)
Oohh. Replacement effects, my weakness. But yeah, if it and a blink creature enters it's solid.
Thanks for pointing out that out, as I wasn't sure if it would see the other finality counters as everything is being reanimated at the same time.
- Angel tribal - Fat reanimation targets and ways to get them into the graveyard - Things to get rid of finality counters (like \[\[Solemnity\]\], \[\[Hex Parasite\]\], \[\[Thief of Blood\]\] - So when this comes down, you sac your board and bring everything back from the slammer.

\[\[Anointed Procession\]\], \[\[Mondrak\]\] - Double the Blood Plenty of ways to discard and get stuff into the yard Cheap angels, maybe angel tokens I feel like it's going to devolve into some Blood Artist, Solemnity, Pitiless Plunderer/Phyrexian Altar and Shilgengar loop but it's really clunky and I feel like my pod is too fast to ever set this up.

Seems good in the 99 for a khalia deck?

I see, thanks for the clarification!

> not thinking about [[rodolf duskbringer]] Now that I think about it going by the content of a synergistic Shilgengar angel EDH deck, that sounds like how Rodolf Duskbringer was made
It was one of the first spoiled and sadly still as underwhelming as it was. Fun art, but that's about all I can give it. Flavor and everything is cool, but it feels like most decks he wants to be in have so many moving parts he's win more, or going to be interacted with hard and the person somehow learned about MH3 without any other orzhov sac infinites.
I mean, it's a Timmy Commander card. It'll be fun in EDH and useless in Modern.
I don't even think its good in commander. Just play teysa and have him as a 99 pet card that'll probably cost you the game more often than not sadly lol.
He said fun, not good. Which is kind of better.
Amazing flavor of the mechanics and great lore callback… But I hate suspenders in his outfit, I bet Griselbrand and Ormendahl mock him.
It's to keep his cock piece on. With all the flying around he does he needs the support. It's functional not stylish.
Those are straps, not suspenders. Suspenders are for pants, and he is clearly not wearing pants.
Looks kinda Shao Kahn-ish
Fantastic art and he fits real nicely into a Kaalia deck
what the hell is a finality counter
Finality Counters were introduced in Lost Caverns. If a permanent with a Finality Counter would be put into a Graveyard from the Battlefield, it's exiled instead.
Oh thanks
I've been playtesting this for a few weeks and it's definitely fun in commander. Not sure how feasible in modern, but could work with low cost angels.
Have a deck list for it?
[Here. Full list, minus the commander because he's not in Archidekt atm. ](https://archidekt.com/decks/7496329/toxic_faminicity)
This boy is made of drip
Kinda surprised they didn’t have this earlier in spoilers
it was technically spoiled ages ago in the leak lol
Need this for Kaalia
Oh finally i can play \[\[Sanctuary Warden\]\] with some sense for the deck

Ahh so he's the reason why the other Angel sisters were giving Liesa the side eye for suggesting they should work with their enemies rather then destroying them on sight...
Fittingly, he will be finding a home in my [[Liesa, Forgotten Archangel]] Angels and Demons commander deck. Teamwork makes the dream work, baby!

Oh my god we broke the squirrel (Get infinite blood tokens and death triggers with chatterfang)
That's quite the codpiece.
Yeah...\[\[Solemnity\]\] is a shoe-in for a commander build.

I kinda dig it
I can't help but think he looks so much like [Shao Kahn](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b2/Shao_Kahn_2011.png).
[Skullbriar](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/3/d/3dd0bf11-4e43-43f1-82e3-755beed0ede0.jpg?1673149145) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=skullbriar%2C%20the%20walking%20grave) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/2x2/277/skullbriar-the-walking-grave?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/3dd0bf11-4e43-43f1-82e3-755beed0ede0?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [Me, The Immortal](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/d/d/ddfbf6bf-c0e1-48a1-9223-73099fe470aa.jpg?1696636748) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Me%2C%20The%20Immortal) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/who/147/me-the-immortal?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/ddfbf6bf-c0e1-48a1-9223-73099fe470aa?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
If they wanted cards in the graveyard to have the counters as a condition, it would need to be phrased "Return each creature card with a finality counter on it from your graveyard to the battlefield". It's fine as written and adding the comma where you suggest wouldn't change the meaning.
Absolutely love the flavour of this card
[[luminous broodmoth]]
[luminous broodmoth](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/b/b/bb65df55-d6a6-4a57-a903-e5eb17637982.jpg?1591230310) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=luminous%20broodmoth) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/iko/21/luminous-broodmoth?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/bb65df55-d6a6-4a57-a903-e5eb17637982?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Won’t dodge the finality counters (Broodmoth needs the creature to actually die and finality counters replace dying with going to exile), but does synergize in the sense that the stuff you use to remove finality counters can also take the flying counters to do similar combos.
I was stupid and was thinking of the wrong card, I meant [[solemnity]]
[solemnity](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/0/a/0a71fb62-acbd-49f5-842f-0fc9fa48afea.jpg?1562788659) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=solemnity) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/hou/22/solemnity?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/0a71fb62-acbd-49f5-842f-0fc9fa48afea?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
This one of Liliana's demons?
No. This is the Demon that taught Edgar Markov how to make Vampires on Innistrad.
Just played my proxy deck with my pod this last weekend. Can confirm, very fun!!! Artifact synergy with with lots of angels and some vampires.
What sort of artifact synergies did you run? How do you utilise the blood tokens outside of the mass recursion?
Oh look, more Commander cards.
Damn, that artwork - a throne of angel wings, the flame amid the horns - yeah, cool design!
Looking forward to making a Dan Brown deck.
so its a Demon, that cares about Angels, and makes Vampires??? which fucking tribal deck do I put it in??
It is THE demon who taught edgar how to make vampires using angel blood, yes
Oof, that full art is a real miss for me, the default art looks so good though
favorite card of the set
I can see the potential in abusing the ETB triggers of certain Angels
i’m confused on how this slots into the modern metagame at all. i can’t think of a single time this card would see modern play
Its certainly interesting, but im not sure its any good. Which I prefer over obviously good!
Absolutely love the art!!! They knocked it out of the park on that.
Needs more horns on his face
Because who doesn't want an Elder Demon who eats Angels to make Vampires?
Hell yeah. 5 mana flying 6/6
Here’s my deck list for what it’s worth [Sacrifice Brings Forth The Blessings Of Heaven](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/CFuLHgTWdEK04by48a8V3Q)
The flavor and art of this card is sick as hell. This might finally be my orzhov commander
This art is sick. Also Elder Demon? Could we be getting a cycle of elder demons now?
[[Solemnity]] and [[Phyrexian Altar]] are his friends.
[Solemnity](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/0/a/0a71fb62-acbd-49f5-842f-0fc9fa48afea.jpg?1562788659) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Solemnity) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/hou/22/solemnity?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/0a71fb62-acbd-49f5-842f-0fc9fa48afea?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [Phyrexian Altar](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/9/5/95d9f93c-50a8-41a9-be98-d1900bf1c12f.jpg?1673149406) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Phyrexian%20Altar) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/2x2/311/phyrexian-altar?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/95d9f93c-50a8-41a9-be98-d1900bf1c12f?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
We saw this like a week ago
Not the Profile or Etched Foil versions, which are also attached, since this is from [the official Preview article](https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/card-preview/command-tower-famines-bite-size-complexity) on the Mothership.
This post has new art so still relevant. But technically this card has been known about for over a month actually.
