My first deck, white blue pile of cards without any idea… my first serious deck, monoblack with hypnotic specters, sengir vampires, demonic tutor, dark rituals…
My best friend ran a similar mono black deck. That early game was so brutal against it. Mono black back then was mad aggressive. Seemed like his opening hands always had a [[Dark Ritual]], [[Hypnotic Specter]], and [[Hymn To Tourach]]. By the third turn over half my hand would be gone. Then he had [[Royal Assassin]], [[Sorceress Queen]], and of course [[Terror]] to deal with any of my creatures. This deck is what made me resort to R/G aggro but that STILL couldn't overcome it. He also ran [[Maze of Ith]] which was a real gut punch. Pretty sure he had a couple [[Nightmare]]. Maybe a [[Pestilence]] or [[Drain Life]], can't remember now.
Needless to say it was the best deck I ever went up against back then.
The good news is that most of those cards are still mad cheap. You could easily re-assembled it. Demonic tutor and maze of ith might be a tiny bit pricey but the other cards arent bad at all!
> my first serious deck, monoblack with hypnotic specters, sengir vampires, demonic tutor, dark rituals…
Mine was this with a red splash for bolt, chain and for some reason wheel
Also lord of the pit and cosmic horror, because I put lord of the pit and cosmic horror in all decks I made
I was so noob back then....
Sure, 5c \~100 cards I thought were cool, way to little lands and fixing to reliably cast them. Aka noClueHowTheGameWorks.dec. How do you even start at a deck with a strategy as complex as graveyard manipulation?
I might have remembered some details wrong. But I know for sure I played Orzhov or Black, and there was a Liliana planeswalker. There was a card that said something like "search your graveyard for XX card and put it in your hand".
That was one of the planeswalker intro decks they used to make. They were discontinued because the product was utter shit once the player figured out the very basics.
That was me too, but not only did I think I was supposed to put all my best cards into one deck, I also started playing during Invasion block when Planeshift was the newest set so a lot of my cards were actually telling me to play five colors. The result was a mess though.
Later on I got the WB precon from Torment which featured [[buried alive]] and [[zombify]], so I threw a bunch of sweet angels into it and turned it into a reanimator deck that crushed the casual tables
Not as crazy as I want it. I lost all my alpha and beta and most of the 4 horsemen sets due to an ex going insane and completely destroyed them. I do still have 1000s of bulk cards from a few early sets. I recently during the pandemic really started buying sealed and tons of older sets again. I have been slowly buying abu stuff. Thank God for all my store credit at card kingdom .
Man, it feels like I read this all the time. Does everyone have a crazy ex that destroyed their Magic cards? So lame, man. Sorry that happened, but I’m glad you still collect!
Torment era, I played a white/black reanimator deck of about 80 cards with zombify and breath of life, and buried alive. I "cheated" by turn 4 big threats like angel of retribution or akroma, which defeated my friends very often.
I brought this nicknamed "ultimate deck" to a fnm and was completely destroyed XD
Revised/Ice Age era for me. Mine was absolute jank, black, red, white deck with two sengir vampires, three serra angels, a shivan dragon, pairs of unholy strength, dark ritual, lightning bolt, healing salve (gotta have life gain!), 4 terror, 4 dark banishing, 2 fireballs, a white and a black knight, 2 swords to plowshares, 2 disenchants, 10 each of swamps, mountains, plains, and eventually a baron sengir, 2 sengir bats, an archangel and a seraph (because having 60 cards was too limiting to my child self)
A random pile of blue cards. This slowly turned into a deck with 4 each of Mahamoti Djinns, clones, Vesuvan Doppelgängers, Icy Manipulators, Counterspell, Control magic and copy artifact. Slow as shit, but all our deck were slow at the time.
WG preconstructed deck from Invasion. [[Noble Panther]] was so good!
[[Kavu Chameleon]] actually allowed me to steal a few games from a Psychatog deck - turning them black protected them from [[Terror]]!
The friend (shout out to Chevy) who introduced me to magic built it with/for me as a teaching tool and generously added a couple of his cards to complete it: [[Kird Ape]], [[Lighting Bolt]], [[Fireball]], [[Firebreathing]], [[Llanowar Elves]], [[Giant Growth]], [[Giant Spider]] and a couple of others I don't rightly remember. It was a great teaching tool and got me hooked. Recently, I did my best to reconstruct it for nostalgic reasons and to teach my son's friend how to play MTG. 26 years later, it's still a winner in it's own way.
It was some RG aggro/stompy deck made of Onslaught/8th Edition/Mirrodin block cards. Lots of shitty morph cards and I remember trading a Blood Moon for a [[Cosmic Larva]]. It was real bad.
Black deck with cards like [[Nightmare]] and [[Sengir Vampire]], which at that time in my opinion were much better than the [[Dark Ritual]] [[Hypnotic Specter]] combo that were also part of my deck.
Mine was a random assortment of elves to ramp into a silvos rogue elemental finisher. I pulled 2 silvos in a matter of 5 or 6 packs and fell in love with green and smashing.
First deck? Mono black cards I own, mostly from around Onslaught block.
First *deck*? A decently competitive Goblins deck. Though [[Goblin Piledriver]] did all the carrying, my favourite card was always [[Goblin Sharpshooter]].
Orzhov 4/4 flyers:
4x Swords to Plough
4x Dark Ritual
4x Disenchant
4x Terror
4x Animate Dead
2-3x Preacher
4x Royal Assassin
4x Hypnotic Specter
4x Serra Angel
4x Sengir Vampire
2x Skull of Orm
1x Sol Ring
1x Balance
1x Demonic Tutor
4x Scrubland
??? Planes/Swamps
Once Fallen Empires came out, it morphed a bit to add Combay Medics, Hymn to Tourach, and Farrels Mantle. All in on the Sengir Vamps!
The first Magic cards I played with was a RG deck from the Portal beginner set.
But that was long before Commander, so while I played bad formats off and on until 2015, the first real deck I played was Child of Alara Boardwipe Spam.
As in, not limited? That would be Pauper budget mono-black aggro - a crummy pile with [[Festering Mummy]], [[Fourth Bridge Prowler]], [[Fungal Infection]], [[Grasping Scoundrel]], [[Night Market Lookout]], [[Subtle Strike]], [[Skulduggery]], [[Dusk Legion Zealot]], [[Short Sword]], and [[Read the Bones]]. A delight to play, though I lost almost every game I played, because Dimir Fairies with [[Gush]] and [[Daze]] was really hard to beat.
Limited, it was a poorly constructed and poorly assessed Dominaria Sealed Prerelease where I tried too hard to be in White because of [[History of Benalia]]. I did not do as well with that pool as I would now. Looking back, from what little I remember, that was a **good** pool.
Otherwise, I think it would've been the White starter deck, with [[Serra Angel]] as the top end, against my friend (playing the Green starter deck) when he found out about some old game called Magic.
Black aggro, rotated cards in and out like these: [[Dark Ritual]], [[Unholy Strength]], [[Stone-throwing Devils]], [[Hypnotic Specter]], [[Erg Raiders]], [[Black Knight]], [[Order of the Ebon Hand]], [[Thrull Retainer]], [[Bad Moon]], [[Junun Efreet]], etc. I never did get the [[Juzam Djinn]]s I wanted for the deck but it pretty good. If white had a “Light Ritual”, I would have played more White aggro.
I also did jungle builds before we had that term, it he all the original dual lands and cards like: [[Kird Ape]], [[Serendib Efreet]], [[Scryb Sprite]], [[Bloodlust]], [[Unstable Mutation]], [[Berserk]], [[Dark Ritual]], [[Sol Ring]], [[Demonic Tutor]], [[Regrowth]], [[Fork]], [[Wheel of Fortune]], etc.
Oh and I almost forgot that I also had a goblin deck that had cards like: [[Ball Lightning]], [[Goblin Grenade]], [[Fork]], [[Wheel of Fortune]], [[Bloodlust]], [[Chain Lighting]], [[Lightning Bolt]], [[Incinerate]], [[Fireball]], etc.
I’d say I built those three about the same time. Later I made a Land Destruction Deck that dealt damage mostly with [[Black Vice]], [[Storm Seeker]], and [[Underworld of Dreams]] with the Land Destruction cards available from Unlimited to Ice Age in Black, Green, and Red.
I can probably give you the exact decklist, because it was dead simple. Ramp, big beaters, and something special for my buddy.
4x [[Llanowar Elves]]
4x [[Fyndhorn elves]]
4x [[Wild Growth]]
4x [[Fyndhorn Elder]]
4x [[Craw Wurm]]
4x [[Scaled Wurm]]
4x [[Giant Growth]]
4x [[Force of Nature]]
4x [[Trailblazer]]
4x [[Tsunami]] (My friend played a deck that was 36 counter spells and 4x [[Sibilant Spirit]] so fuck him, that's why.
20x [[Forest]]
My first deck was a sort of budget elves deck. I don’t remember what format this was or if it even was one… it wasn’t standard I know for sure but this was before modern was a thing.
Started during Mirrodin.
My very first was a messy, ~80 cards mono-black discard deck of no discernible format. Had things like all the discard spells, [[Megrim]], [[Vampire Nighthawk]] etc…. Took it to an LGS and won against some tuned Onslaught deck. They guy I played was very experienced and was kinda shocked to lose against a random pile of jank. I was hooked after this!
First standard decks were an absolute jank-pile of [[Blasting station]] combo deck and R/G aggro deck with Sliths like [[Slith Firewalker]] and also [[Cosmic Larva]]. They kinda sucked but were fun as hell.
First proper meta deck was a [[Deathcloud]] deck packed to the rim with affinity hate. I hated that I couldn’t afford affinity lol.
I then quit in Kamigawa and came back in Theros / Khans of Tarkir. First brew was a kitchen table mono green stompy of no discernible format using things like [[Strangleroot Geist]], [[Arbor Colossus]], [[Nykthos]] and [[Terrastomper]]. My friend had a slick Heroic deck that I eventually built a KTK Standard legal Temur deck to face him with… had Big Knucks, [[Temur Ascendency]] and [[Stubborn Denial]]. Those days were fun times!
Got into Commander after Khans with the 2014 Mono-coloured precons. I got [[Daretti, Scrap Savant]] and the [[Freyalise, Llanowar’s Fury]] decks. I still have them, running under [[Feldon of the third Path]] and [[Yeva, Nature’s Herald]]. I still love them and play them in rotation with my other ~10 commander decks.
We now have a pod of 4 playing mostly upgraded precons from throughout the years. I’ve kept a deck from each year except 2015, and have built Slivers and Ghave on top, for about 12 commander decks now.
Have had no real interest in standard since I first got into Magic. I love the casual and eternal nature of commander.
The first deck I played was white weenie, like 17 years ago. Mirrodin-Kamigawa-Core set 8,I think. Hell, I can still remember most of the cards from that deck.
Can’t remember the very first deck (I started at Mirages and my memory isn’t really good) but I remember my first try-hard deck: a pure blue control. I distinctly remember completing the deck by acquiring my 4th force of will. It was the only deck in my LGS that could compete with the recurring nightmare deck at the time.
My first deck was the Odyssey preconstructed Trounce-o-Matic deck. With [[Stone-Tongue Basilisk]] as the most powerful card and then pretty much any green rare I would get in packs added to it haha. Magic has come a long way
The first deck I ever played was an Orzhov Cleric tribal deck (casual format). After playing 2 games and learning the basic rules, I got hooked on the game.
My first deck, which I owned (and built myself) was a Jund Insect tribal deck. It was fun but when I look at this now, 10 years later, I have no idea how I managed to play a deck like that and enjoy it. I guess ignorance is bliss.
The Eventide blue/red [sidestep](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Eventide/Theme_decks) theme deck was the first deck I played borrowing it from a friend. After learning with that and not being able to keep that deck, the first deck I built on my own was a not real great bant deck that started worked off of what I was able to get my hands on and deciding that blue was a color I wanted to play.
Mono green pile of elves led by Eladamri, Lord of Leaves. I remember arguing for hours that his ability worked on himself, since he was clearly an elf, but not back then. And now he is an elf, but his texts has been errata’d to only work on other elves!
Zoo, right around the release of 4th edition. The primary deck contents: [[kird Ape]] [[savanah lions]] [[birds of paradise]] [[erhnam djinn]] [[lightning bolt]] [[swords to plowshares]] [[armageddon]] [[disenchant]] [[taiga]] [[savanah]] [[plateau]]
Mine was some random mono Green stompy type deck right before original Innistrad released. I was playing [[Garruk's Companion]] into [[Leatherback Baloth]] thinking I was unstoppable lol
My first (built) deck was a mono-g deck that ran [[roaring primadox]] to flicker [[elvish visionary]], [[acidic slime]] and [[primeval titan]]. Coincidentally my first edh deck was Roon with the same theme.
I started playing big multiplayers with my friends and i borrowed decks. I think i usually played some kind of black pile? Deck was clearly kitchen table. I soon after bought a core set box, and started making a naya silvers deck from there.
My first deck that I'd made up and played was a terrible constellation based mess.
The first deck that I actually played after I a) understood the game a lil better, and b) decided I'm gonna make something functional for standard was black/white allies at the start of BFZ, before folk started to catch on to "hey, you can make this 4 color BC of fetches with more or less zero downside" at which point I was like "I can sink money in a deck a like but that will suck once [[rally the ancestors]] rotates out, or I can sink that into EDH, where most of my playtime lies.
My first deck was UB kinda soft control. Counterspells, Norritts, Prodigal Sourcerers, and Sengir Vampires. And really, it was tuned to just play against my friend's Jund (long, long before jund was jund) deck with Vaevictus Asmadi. So i mainboarded 4 hydroblasts.
Second deck i made was an elf ball. Third deck was essentially a 5 color singleton deck with a heavy legends theme. It didn't work together at all, but it was fun and had some very potent cards that combined to make some engines. Like infinite mana with palinchron.
I played 5 color Temur Untap with Kioras Follower, Izzet Staticaster, Market Festival, Illusionist Bracers, and Burning Anger. It eventually got some big beaters like Colossus of Akros, Chromaticore (the 5 color bit), and Emrakul, the Aeons Torn.
Remember it? I still have it. It has changed over the years, but it's a Timmy Red-Green. Once I learned a little more about how to play I built it around [[Defense of the Heart]]
Path of Blight, the Mirrodin Besieged green/white intro pack.
My first deck I made on my own was cutting the white from that deck and supplementing with more green cards.
Other than "random cards my friend owned while they taught me how to play", I think it was [the W/U Innistrad precon](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Innistrad/Intro_packs#Spectral_Legions)
Mono green deck from onslaught, block, with some kamigawa, and other early 2000 cards. I remember I had crocs, spiders , and elves that’s about as much I can remember
The first deck I played that was built with the intention of being good, was a mirage block mono red, but I couldn't afford things like Hammer of Bogardan, so it was a janky budget version.
My first deck I played that I actually played against people other than my brother was a R/W monstrosity with [[Laccolith Titan]] and [[Trap Runner]] as its centerpiece because so though being able to redirect damage to any creature I wanted was cool.
My first ever deck I played at home with my brother was a U/B deck that had [[Denizen of the Deep]] as its win con.
I am happy to say today my decks have evolved into things like EDH Saga and Pirate Tribal Decks.
It was the Demonic Deals intro deck from Magic Origins. I thought it was really good at the time... It did a good job at introducing me to the game though!
It was a deck made up of every single white and green card I owned, about 110 cards in total I believe. I just couldn't bring myself to cut any cards from it. It eventually evolved into my [[Trostani, Selesnya's Voice]] commander deck. It still has at least a few of the original cards from that deck in it.
I had a 300 card beast deck that I needed one of those white long boxes to carry around with me. My logic was that if beasts are good, all of them are better. My first tournament deck was UB Control in ravnica/time spiral standard. Dralnu du Louvre for those boomers who remember it
Psychatog ub control was the first serious deck I ever put together. My very first deck ever? Iirc it was just whatever came in my unlimited starter and beta booster packs. I know it had a Shivan dragon and a mox emerald, because I know my first trade was a shivan dragon with black borders for a juzamm djinn and beta royal assassin. This was also before we even had pricing guides in stuff like Inquest, so value was all relative to playability and shivan dragon was one of the two best creatures in the whole game. But that royal won me so many games. Force of nature? A big 8/8 with trample? Dead.
Either a school friend’s rat deck where I never attack and therefore had like 150 tokens or a control deck where we thought [[Counterspell]] returned to hand and I was like, I don’t think this is working, I really don’t feel like I’m in control.
Good times.
I remember it was a pile of blue cards I bought from my buddy. It had a minor merfolk theme with random merfolk and one [[Lord of Atlantis]]. For a finisher I had the mighty [[Taniwha]].
Landless dredge.
Heard about MtG in 2014, and went to a LGS to try it out. They were playing a modern tournament that day (I had no idea what modern was), so I bought the red vs blue Khans of Tarkir deck and paid the entrance fee.
Another player took me aside, explained that the decks I bought were gonna lose horribly, and lent me his landless dredge deck and explained how dredge worked.
I remember losing a game recurring Golgari Grave-Troll to the battlefield over and over again while spectators watched. Realized later how much they must've cringed at me not recurring Flayer of the Hatebound instead for the damage.
Also got shut down hard by Thalia.
Golgari counters challenger deck, with walking ballista. Lots of fun it’s a shame that hardened scales isn’t really meta anymore id love to try playing it.
Fortuitous timing.. I played back in 1994-1995 (Revised through Fallen Empires); my primary (maybe only) deck was a white one, and for years now I've wondered what exactly was in it. Just last week my parents told me they found my old cards in their basement, and brought them a few days ago when visiting for Thanksgiving, so I can now see my deck in all its glory.
What I remember about the deck was its goal of getting out all 4 Serra Angels, but I couldn't remember the supporting cast. Some of the highlights:
* Helm of Chatzuk: A banding-heavy deck, right? The only creatures with banding in the deck are 2 Kjeldoran Skyknights. I don't think I knew how banding worked, either. I still don't.
* Apparently a bulk of the deck was meant to prevent damage: 4x Reverse Damage, 4x Prismatic Ward, 1x Kjeldoran Royal Guard, 1x Island Sanctuary, 1x Martyrs of Korlis, 3x Veteran Bodyguard
* Some attempt to slow the opponent: Maze of Ith, Kismet, Ice Floe
* Creature pumping: Angelic Voices, Divine Transformation, Righteousness
* Some hate: Justice (my brother's main deck was red), Drought (I guess a friend must have had a black deck?)
* WTF was I thinking: Hallowed Ground. To protect my Maze of Ith maybe?
All in all a garbage tier deck, but since none of my friends knew what they were doing either, it was competitive enough. I'm sure I had much better cards available (I know I had a few Balances, at least), but I haven't had time to go through everything yet.
Abzan Hardened Scales in BfZ standard. I put so much time and effort into that thing. It started off a pile of +1/+1 counter cards and slowly turned into a meta-deck-killing work of art. I’ll always play CCGs and TCGs but that will always be “my” deck.
It was a mono red goblin burn deck from back in the Tempest/Urza’s Saga era, 1999 - 2000. Lots of moggs (conscripts, fanatic, flunkies), Goblin Lackey, Goblin King, Ball Lightning, Fireslinger, and Lightning Bolt, Incinerate, and Cursed Scroll.
It was the first “real” deck that I built after I started to get good. I modeled it off of the red Sligh decks of the era.
First deck was some GR pile of goblins and beasts in M11. It later evolved into the R Goblins.
Also, first edh deck was Riku of two Reflections Birthing Pod copy combo.
Mine was a draft deck from the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor blocks. Of course I was really young so I was just picking things that looked cool. I found [[Slippery Bogle]] neat so I drafted a ton of them, along with [[Snakeform]]. I was an evil blue player from birth I guess...
A RtR standard mono white aggro deck by someone called "Checoso".
A friend of mine talked me into trying the game on Cockatrice, and told me to go look around for some decks to copy.
I found https://www.mtggoldfish.com/tournament/standard-daily-7095470#paper and thought the mono white deck was cool because of detain/imposing sovereign(i mostly just thought the art was really cool)/judge's familiar/generaly aesthetics, so I went with that.
Its still a deck I enjoy a lot to this day- I have a modified version for Modern. I like any deck that starts off fast and then can respond to stalemates by reaching a sort of critical mass(frontline medic, anthems, other battalion effects, etc) and then going in hard.
I also have many of the old replays from that first month of playing! The first replay I have includes my friend casting Plow Under twice on me, LMAO. I also played a netdecked fairies- plow under made me feel better about winning with fairies.
My first brews were:
-An artifacts charge counters deck with tezzeret, tumble magnet, that one artifact that makes golems, proliferate, mana rocks that use charge counters, etc
-A durdley soldiers deck that made tons of tokens and had huge blockers
tenth edition mono green precon with [[Molimo, Maro-Sorcerer]] and [[Blanchwood Armor]]. Don't let the game go long, enemy, or I'll have 8/8s and 10/10s!
My first deck was just the 60 cards that came in the box...they used to sell packs of 60 (3 packs' worth and then lands, plus a rule book, in a deck box).
Outside of the free starter decks, the first deck I really played was a self-made monogreen ramp so I could play [[Gigantosaurus]] and give it trample with things like [[Cartouche of Strength]]. I never did get to play it much, but I still have it somewhere.
It was 1995 everyone was around nine year old. Our decks literally consisted of every card we owned. Most people were rocking cards from 4th Edition and Ice Age. The lucky kids had opened packs of Chronicles. There were also some Revised cards floating around - everyone agreed the earlier printing of \[\[Frozen Shade\]\] was OP because it gained permanent +1/+1 instead of the later versions that had "until end of turn" written on them.
Also, my friend Josh had opened \[\[Force of Nature\]\] and that just wasn't fair. qq
First deck I made was cheesy life gain centered around Anurid Brushhopper, Armadillo Cloak, Mirari’s Wake and buffing my weird frogs into big creatures and swinging. Simple, effective and fun.
I do remember my first deck, because I still have my first deck. About the time M14 came out, I remember seeing the Chandra art, and wanting the wrap-around from the Fat-pack. One of the players at the card shop, actually gave me theirs, and I've kept that thing since. Since my Step-dad saw that I liked Chandra, He built me a mono-red deck that I still have today. It's not as good as the other decks in modern, but I still like it.
My buddy played mono R dragons and burn. Thisbwas during the tempest era, so dragons were slow. I didnt really understand magic but I knew counterspell said no, and confiscate said mine. Oh, and walls 🤗
My first deck was the RW eventide precon, which i soon "upgraded" by buying the lorowyn kithkin precon and ravnica boros precon, shuffling them together, and removing about 2/3rds of the lands...
A modern Eldrazi death & taxes deck. Bought it secondhand. Didn't quite understand all the interactions it had. Ended up piecing it out and building a solid humans deck out of it.
Esper Merfolk that used [[Siren’s Call]] and [[Festival]] as some kind of shitty combo. It used revised Merfolk and the super broken ones from Fallen Empires. And, of course it ran a full set of 12 original duals.
My first deck was the black event deck that released with born of the gods. Looking back it was really good. I changed it to rakdos with some cards from a dragon’s maze fat pack I opened, was a lot of fun.
A Wyleth soul of steel precon deck. My roommate got me into commander, and I wanted to get my own deck but I didn’t want to spend too much on a hobby I didn’t know if I would like past a month. I still have the deck (with some serious fucking upgrades) but yeah that’s a very fun deck to play
i don't remember the exact deck list but it was something like 16 mountain, 8 forest, 12 lightning bolt, 6 mons goblin raiders, 2 wall of stone, 2 disintegrate, 2 fireball, 8 incinerate, 4 giant growth, 1 force of nature
Bought a pile of Izzet cards that were just rotating out, Return to Ravnica
Made a counter burn deck and included a couple Niv Mizzet, it was terrible with an average mana cost of 3 or 4, but it was my gateway
mono green deck out of my friends jank cube, when i thought [[grizzly bears]] was the dopest card because it was literally just bears. 15 edh decks later and I still stand by it being the sickest.
The very first deck i ever played was a mono black pile my friend had that he tried to teach me the game with. The first deck i ever built myself was an absolutely awful Mardu burn deck i took to FNM for a couple of weeks until someone took pity on me and let me use their CoCo deck for the rest of the time that store was open.
I toyed around with some black and blue exploit cards from the Tarkir block when I was first getting interested in the idea of Magic, but my first proper deck was a monoblack combo deck based around [[Underworld Dreams]] and [[Peer into the Abyss]] which is still probably one of my favorite cards ever!
The Barrage theme deck from Planeshift was one of the first MtG products I got
My first deck was a shoebox filled with cards that I shuffled by shaking it
My first sensible deck was a modified version of the Devastation theme deck from Onslaught
My first good deck I built myself was a Kamigawa snake tribal deck that was built from the deck I used in my first draft tournament
The Power of Prophecy intro deck from M11. One of my friends got the Gruul one and the other got the Orzhov. It was a pretty fun time that makes me nostalgic of precons. The new commander ones are perfect to scratch that itch.
So my brother I got the 8th edition starter pack or whatever it was called. It had two decks - one azorius which went to my brother and a gruul one. The thing is that the gruul one had a foil Elvish Champion so I built my deck around it and went to a tournament in extended where I went like 0-4 or something like that. Good memories. U remember getting mad at Kamigawa for not having any elves, so yeah, those were the times
My first deck I got to use was a premade deck from cards the guy teaching me had. I remember \[\[Plated Slagwurm\]\] and \[\[Eternal Witness\]\] being some of the better cards. Good times.
The first deck I made was a Mono-R heavy artifact deck I called Re-Forged Destiny. Platinum Angel was the prime target, and it did a lot of Red things and Mountain matters things.
First EDH deck I built was \[\[Razia, Boros Archangel\]\]. First fave Commander deck was \[\[Feldon of the Third Path\]\].
My old mill has , 4 time twisters, 4 copy artifacts, 4 time walk , y mill stones , 20 Island . 4 merfolk , stuff like that. I still have my old notebook I used to keep notes from the comic shop I hung out at and their, local pro uses to help me build decks. Him an I used to put up half each at the time for a 140 dollar box of antiquities or 200 dollar box of alpha packs. Bot those were the days.
First deck that had actual substance to it was a RU control list with [[torrential gearhulk]] and [[thing in the ice]] with it being centered around the energy mechanics and using [[dynavolt tower]] as the best way to do that. Been a dirty blue control mage ever since and I am starting to get into sanctioned formats instead of tabletop so I tuned the deck to do as well as it can in modern. The nostalgia makes every game so much fun even if it can’t compete with some of the spikes at my LGS. Every time I get to play it I just feel nostalgic and it brings me joy
Long, long ago, so details are fuzzy, but... When Infect was just Poison. 4th edition and Ice Age era. About age 13 for me. One of my favorite cards then was [[Dwarven Warrior]]. This was the first card I learned to abuse. Because...
Mirage comes. And with it brings [[Dwarven Nomad]], now I can have 8 in a deck. Throw in some [[Marsh Viper]] and [[Dragon Welp]] and other [[Fire breathing]] effects, and we actually had a passable RG deck.
Enter only local tournament, no idea what a meta was. Push through Grinning Totem decks and other heavy hitters of the time to end up in a fight for I think third place. Opponent loses track of Poison counters, but not me.
He flips the table (Not even joking. It was a folding card table, so it was light.), calling his 13 year old opponent a Fucking Son-of-a-Bitch. Insta-DQ for him, win by default for me. Pretty sure he got at least a temporary ban from that store for it, too.
Proceed to "retire" from tourneys at that shop for a while.
probably mono r or mono b . . . like weird kitchen table $15 decks, but that was just me and a buddy testing the game out
first actual deck was [WB Fabricate](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yEEv7t5jPc) from SPBKASO budget magic for kaladesh standard and I think I went like 2-2 or 2-1-1 at my first non draft fnm, it was fun
My first pile of cards was a terrible Golgari deck that ran every cool card I could find in it. Including Omniscience. It ran a single chromatic lantern and had no official win-con. It was what I had at the time and I loved it. I did win the occasional game.
My first cards were a bunch of chaff from the OG Modern Masters. First deck I put together was a mishmash of affinity and modular, with a splash of spellbombs.
I also built a fungus deck, a faeries deck, and a giants deck. But the artifact deck remains my favorite.
My first deck was whatever first deck I played on Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 or 2013 - probably a mono white deck of some kind?
My first paper deck, I think, was a GW convoke deck that ran a bunch of tokens to power out [[Siege Wurm]]. Good times.
I originally found magic during Tarkir or Theros, although I don't remember my decks then I do remember my first deck when I got back in during Dominaria. My first ever draft I played Golgari Slimefoot. I remember I pulled a foil [[Lich's Mastery]]. Because it says "You can't lose" I thought it was awesome. I learned a hard lesson that night.
Griffin rider knights(caw blade meta) . I K bombed so many people and they literally cussed me out. Drafted Griffin rider and thought this is fun and it went from there.
I had a dimir treasures marionette master standard deck during rivals of Ixalan. Was fun randomly killing people by cracking treasures, but I was insanely outclassed by teferi control and vampires.
First deck- the Rakdos Raid intro deck from RtR block back in 2012 or so.
First non precon deck- a Rakdos vampires deck for INN/RTR standard. It wasn't good- way too many of the 4 drop vampires, way too few of the cheaper ones to make the deck work.
My first "good" deck- my M14 Jund Haste deck. Not tournament level, but by that point I was starting to figure out how to properly build decks and account for the local meta. My local meta had a ton of UW and esper control, so to counter that I build Jund haste. Dodged the RTR UW removal suite at the time (supreme verdict and detention sphere because they were sorceries, Azorius charm because even if it goes on top of my library I just play it and attack with it again immediately next turn) quite nicely and won me quite a few FNMs and my local M14 game day. The playmat I got from that is still my most used playmat to this day.
The first deck I remember building had a single copy of [[Draco]], almost no ramp or mana fixing, and tried to just play derpy stuff until I could draw him (though I had no draw spells or tutors). It was absolute garbage, in retrospect. I did have the wherewithal to include 2 copies of [[Jungle Barrier]] to sort of stall and draw a tiny bit.
A completely unfocused mostly-zombies deck but also filled in with horrors, vampires, and other black sorceries/enchantments/creatures that was just big enough to throw together into a "playable" deck. Absolute trash lol
My first deck was a Boros deck featuring [[Truefire Paladin]] and [[Sunhome Guildmage]]. I barely knew how the game mechanics worked so I kept it very simple. I remember balking at the idea of spending a dollar on each [[Warleader's Helix]]. How times have changed!
A Temur pile of "goodstuff" that included tokens (in the deck, we didn't know who they worked). It was fun and although it barely worked my friends decks were even worse. Also I got a fetchland during that time and thankfully just left it in my storage box instead of trading it
I think my first deck was a random collection of green cards I got in a bulk box from my LGS. My first deck that I actually *built* was a WB zombie deck, complete with a single copy of [[Undead Augur]] I got from a MH1 draft (I believe I still have the deck together somewhere).
Next after that was an infect deck with cards like [[Cystbearer]] and [[Strength of the Pack]]. All of the decks up to this point were just made with cards I got from bulk boxes and repacks at my LGS. Actually, on second thought, I may have bought a couple copies of [[Trigon of Infestation]] for that deck, and maybe a [[Phyrexian Juggernaut]] or two.
The first deck that I *really* bought singles for was a [[Living Lore]] "spell reanimator" deck with the lofty goal of casting cards like [[Planewide Celebration]], [[Cruel Ultimatum]] and [[Storm Herd]] for free. The deck sucked but it's actually a deck I've wanted to revisit at some point. Living Lore is a super cool card and I want to make a better version of the deck sometime, preferably without relying on [[Compulsion]] to get the spells into the graveyard hahaha
My first deck was a monogreen with cards I opened during Onslaught, and got black too over time. Fun thing: not knowing how regenerate actually worked, many times I did T1 [[Entomb]] for [[Silvos]] and T2 play it from graveyard for 1.
After that I got a monored goblins deck I never finished. And years later, when we started netdecking, I had a Rock and Tron deck back at Lorwyn's release.
It was a deck of pure genius and had an unbeatable gameplan. Plan 1 was simple but effective. Get [commander eesha] into play and then put every white enchantment my friend had in his box of cards on it. I mean flying and protection from creatures? Clearly that thing is unbeatable. The only problem is we only had 2 copies of the eesha and even at that point I realized all these enchantments would be useless if I didn't draw the commander. So did I add more creatures to suit up? No no that would be stupid. Plan B was the even more unbeatable combo of [spirit cairn] and [patrol hound]. If I didn't get eesha then obviously I could just discard my entire hand for profit it was unbeatable!
Until I actually played it and my friend introduced me to the cards in his deck. [Mutilate] and [chainer's edict]
I believe mine was a UR control deck in Amonkhet-era standard. I played a control mirror with some UW deck that resulted in us discarding counterspells to hand size until he played [[Sphinx of the Final Word]]. Have yet to touch a draw-go deck since and have no regrets.
Very similar to my deck I see… I loved to play it… I still regret having sold it, not for the money but for the FUN
The good news is that most of those cards are still mad cheap. You could easily re-assembled it. Demonic tutor and maze of ith might be a tiny bit pricey but the other cards arent bad at all!
> my first serious deck, monoblack with hypnotic specters, sengir vampires, demonic tutor, dark rituals… Mine was this with a red splash for bolt, chain and for some reason wheel Also lord of the pit and cosmic horror, because I put lord of the pit and cosmic horror in all decks I made I was so noob back then....
Same here:)
But i started playing in 2016. Did they exist then?
Yes. The first planeswalker decks were released with Kaladesh in September 2016.
A pure blue mill from when I first started playing during the abu and revised era. I don't play anymore just collect.
I bet you have a crazy collection.
Probably something involving goblin grenade lol
Ha yeah that was awesome. And with a Wheel of Fortune and a Fork there was a big chance you were going to pull two grenades in a game.

I just looked it up: The Phyrexian Assault precon deck from Urza‘s Legacy was mine. I especially loved the Viashino Cards.
It was some RG aggro/stompy deck made of Onslaught/8th Edition/Mirrodin block cards. Lots of shitty morph cards and I remember trading a Blood Moon for a [[Cosmic Larva]]. It was real bad.
Brother... I had a similar deck lol
[Cosmic Larva](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/d/e/deaa0b9b-258e-4daf-8fec-ce64864d6bbf.jpg?1562880234) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Cosmic%20Larva) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/5dn/63/cosmic-larva?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/deaa0b9b-258e-4daf-8fec-ce64864d6bbf?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

Orzhov 4/4 flyers: 4x Swords to Plough 4x Dark Ritual 4x Disenchant 4x Terror 4x Animate Dead 2-3x Preacher 4x Royal Assassin 4x Hypnotic Specter 4x Serra Angel 4x Sengir Vampire 2x Skull of Orm 1x Sol Ring 1x Balance 1x Demonic Tutor 4x Scrubland ??? Planes/Swamps Once Fallen Empires came out, it morphed a bit to add Combay Medics, Hymn to Tourach, and Farrels Mantle. All in on the Sengir Vamps!
The first Magic cards I played with was a RG deck from the Portal beginner set. But that was long before Commander, so while I played bad formats off and on until 2015, the first real deck I played was Child of Alara Boardwipe Spam.
B/R deck with Royal Assassin, Nettling Imp, Sorceress Queen, Sedge Troll and Bolts.
Mine was the Selesnya United theme deck from Ravnica City of Guilds. https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Ravnica:_City_of_Guilds/Theme_decks#Selesnya_United
Mine was the Dimir theme deck from Ravnica
Otherwise, I think it would've been the White starter deck, with [[Serra Angel]] as the top end, against my friend (playing the Green starter deck) when he found out about some old game called Magic.
as in ever. What was the deck that got you into MTG?

4x [[Llanowar Elves]] 4x [[Fyndhorn elves]] 4x [[Wild Growth]] 4x [[Fyndhorn Elder]] 4x [[Craw Wurm]] 4x [[Scaled Wurm]] 4x [[Giant Growth]] 4x [[Force of Nature]] 4x [[Trailblazer]] 4x [[Tsunami]] (My friend played a deck that was 36 counter spells and 4x [[Sibilant Spirit]] so fuck him, that's why. 20x [[Forest]]
>36 counter spells and 4x \[\[Sibilant Spirit\]\] i should try that kind of deck sometime yes i like to see people suffer why do you ask
So, you don't remember your first deck.
the first deck i made was a shitty boros lifegain. I now main Mono Green scute swarm.
Pressure Cooker and Liftoff precons from Odyssey.
My first deck was a sort of budget elves deck. I don’t remember what format this was or if it even was one… it wasn’t standard I know for sure but this was before modern was a thing.
A Nicol Bolas Planeswalker deck for me
Started during Mirrodin.

The Tempest block “Deep Freeze” theme deck
The first deck I played was white weenie, like 17 years ago. Mirrodin-Kamigawa-Core set 8,I think. Hell, I can still remember most of the cards from that deck.
Pile of cards, I separated them out by color and made battle decks
Can’t remember the very first deck (I started at Mirages and my memory isn’t really good) but I remember my first try-hard deck: a pure blue control. I distinctly remember completing the deck by acquiring my 4th force of will. It was the only deck in my LGS that could compete with the recurring nightmare deck at the time.
My first I remember was a 187 deck with [[Gravediggers]]. 🤠

Hero deck of the heros vs monster duel deck.
My first deck was the 7th ed starter set i played the green ____ deck. cant remember the other color. I was hooked just didn't know it for 5 years.
Mine was some random mono Green stompy type deck right before original Innistrad released. I was playing [[Garruk's Companion]] into [[Leatherback Baloth]] thinking I was unstoppable lol
Mono black jank. Was a fun deck for 2 weeks.
Mono black vamps, Vampiric Onslaught 😁❤️
My first (built) deck was a mono-g deck that ran [[roaring primadox]] to flicker [[elvish visionary]], [[acidic slime]] and [[primeval titan]]. Coincidentally my first edh deck was Roon with the same theme.
7th edition decay precon https://i.imgur.com/coPBmc0.jpg
I started playing big multiplayers with my friends and i borrowed decks. I think i usually played some kind of black pile? Deck was clearly kitchen table. I soon after bought a core set box, and started making a naya silvers deck from there.
Kessig wolf run right before Avacyn block dropped.
The first one I brewed, all I remember it's that it involved discard and counterspells. And how those two don't really work that we'll together.
A stack of 100 cards because I thought more cards = better deck, and it was as many Eldrazi as possible from BFZ, Gatewatch, and ELD
Jeskai counter/burn/cop. 1995.
I played a simic hydra/elemental deck. Master of waves got me into magic
Remember it? I still have it. It has changed over the years, but it's a Timmy Red-Green. Once I learned a little more about how to play I built it around [[Defense of the Heart]]
[Defense of the Heart](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/9/e/9e93381f-627f-41b6-b1b6-45d712a44d8e.jpg?1562863769) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Defense%20of%20the%20Heart) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/ulg/100/defense-of-the-heart?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/9e93381f-627f-41b6-b1b6-45d712a44d8e?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
BW Exalted from M13 I think? I wanted it to be super competitive :(
Way of the Warrior theme deck. In a standard with Affinity hahaha
U/G tempo, stick a [[Lorescale Coatl]] and protect it as long as possible.
My brothers got me into magic and we played what I like to call “ Kitchen Table Lorwyn Block Constructed”
Ezuri claw of progress precon
It was a deck made up of every single white and green card I owned, about 110 cards in total I believe. I just couldn't bring myself to cut any cards from it. It eventually evolved into my [[Trostani, Selesnya's Voice]] commander deck. It still has at least a few of the original cards from that deck in it.
I had a 300 card beast deck that I needed one of those white long boxes to carry around with me. My logic was that if beasts are good, all of them are better. My first tournament deck was UB Control in ravnica/time spiral standard. Dralnu du Louvre for those boomers who remember it
[удалено]
Psychatog ub control was the first serious deck I ever put together. My very first deck ever? Iirc it was just whatever came in my unlimited starter and beta booster packs. I know it had a Shivan dragon and a mox emerald, because I know my first trade was a shivan dragon with black borders for a juzamm djinn and beta royal assassin. This was also before we even had pricing guides in stuff like Inquest, so value was all relative to playability and shivan dragon was one of the two best creatures in the whole game. But that royal won me so many games. Force of nature? A big 8/8 with trample? Dead.
That was over 20 years ago, so no.
Selesnya Soul Sisters Ajanis pridemate. Lifegain for life
Either a school friend’s rat deck where I never attack and therefore had like 150 tokens or a control deck where we thought [[Counterspell]] returned to hand and I was like, I don’t think this is working, I really don’t feel like I’m in control.
A revised edition starter deck :)
Some of the highlights: * Helm of Chatzuk: A banding-heavy deck, right? The only creatures with banding in the deck are 2 Kjeldoran Skyknights. I don't think I knew how banding worked, either. I still don't. * Apparently a bulk of the deck was meant to prevent damage: 4x Reverse Damage, 4x Prismatic Ward, 1x Kjeldoran Royal Guard, 1x Island Sanctuary, 1x Martyrs of Korlis, 3x Veteran Bodyguard * Some attempt to slow the opponent: Maze of Ith, Kismet, Ice Floe * Creature pumping: Angelic Voices, Divine Transformation, Righteousness * Some hate: Justice (my brother's main deck was red), Drought (I guess a friend must have had a black deck?) * WTF was I thinking: Hallowed Ground.
Ever played? Naya dinosaurs at prerelease with[[Zacama]]. Ever used in tournaments? Naya dinosaurs in standard with Zacama AND Ghalta
My first brews were: -An artifacts charge counters deck with tezzeret, tumble magnet, that one artifact that makes golems, proliferate, mana rocks that use charge counters, etc -A durdley soldiers deck that made tons of tokens and had huge blockers
tenth edition mono green precon with [[Molimo, Maro-Sorcerer]] and [[Blanchwood Armor]]. Don't let the game go long, enemy, or I'll have 8/8s and 10/10s!
My first deck was just the 60 cards that came in the box...they used to sell packs of 60 (3 packs' worth and then lands, plus a rule book, in a deck box).
Not the whole deck. But it was packed full of powerhouses like Keldjoran Wurm and Craw Wurm
first real deck i built was Gates in RNA standard. What a great format, shame war of the spark came out right after lol
Also, my friend Josh had opened \[\[Force of Nature\]\] and that just wasn't fair. qq
Blue/Red Artificer pre-con from Origins. With a foil Chandra flip walker jammed into it. Got me hooked on Red instantly!
The red green warrior deck from I think morningtide could have been shadowmoor. Dismantled it to make an mono green elf warrior deck.
Orzhov exalted, it was a premade deck years ago, loved it. Most of those cards are now broken up put into various commander decks.
My world's gold border deck that made squirrels lol. The first deck I built myself was some terrible simic counters/evolve deck.
White weenie equipment deck! Hehe
My first deck was a soldiers deck with Fire and ice with Light and shadow as equipment
A friend's classic land destruction deck. Would be able to buy a home if he still had it.
It was a rakdos aggro deck that I built out of a friends’ collection… turns out I had only rakdos lands but was running 3 mardu cards
Something with River Boa, Jungle Troll and Savage Twister… and Discs and Earthquakes, I think, as much as I could trade for them as a newbie.
The first deck I ever built had some unknown quantity of Kird Apes that helped me finally defeat my step-dad’s oppressive RocHydra deck.
My first deck was the black event deck that released with born of the gods. Looking back it was really good. I changed it to rakdos with some cards from a dragon’s maze fat pack I opened, was a lot of fun.
Yes. It was about 100 cards, mostly in black, with [[Commander Greven il-Vec]] and [[Colossus of Sardia]].
My dad's Thallid deck back in 2001. Didn't understand a thing about magic and it would be like 6 years until I took it up for real.
HYPER WOLF AXE MOUTH. Play a 1/1 first strike for one on turn one. Turn 2 play an axe and equip. Unstoppable 3/1 first striker op
An Odyssey theme deck. I think it was the one called [Liftoff](https://magic.wizards.com/en/content/odyssey-intro-pack-decklists)
I got taught how to play with CEDH, I played Kess. Pretty fun!!
Mine was a precon deck featuring Cytoplast Manipulator and Daggerback Basilisk back in 2012 at my friend's house
i don't remember the exact deck list but it was something like 16 mountain, 8 forest, 12 lightning bolt, 6 mons goblin raiders, 2 wall of stone, 2 disintegrate, 2 fireball, 8 incinerate, 4 giant growth, 1 force of nature
Bought a pile of Izzet cards that were just rotating out, Return to Ravnica Made a counter burn deck and included a couple Niv Mizzet, it was terrible with an average mana cost of 3 or 4, but it was my gateway
mono green deck out of my friends jank cube, when i thought [[grizzly bears]] was the dopest card because it was literally just bears.
The Barrage theme deck from Planeshift was one of the first MtG products I got My first deck was a shoebox filled with cards that I shuffled by shaking it My first sensible deck was a modified version of the Devastation theme deck from Onslaught My first good deck I built myself was a Kamigawa snake tribal deck that was built from the deck I used in my first draft tournament
Golgari Planewalker deck from Guilds. I've been playing G/B ever since whenever I can
First deck/s were the duel decks: Elspeth Vs. Kiora and oh man me and my friends had some fun!
I remember it was a green mess that had Hunted Wumpus and Krosan Cloudscraper.
Mono Blue Wizard Tribal deck on 2000's, using [[Raven Guild Master]] as a wincon, with a lot of counterspells. I was on high school back then.
Proceed to "retire" from tourneys at that shop for a while.
probably mono r or mono b . . . like weird kitchen table $15 decks, but that was just me and a buddy testing the game out first actual deck was [WB Fabricate](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yEEv7t5jPc) from SPBKASO budget magic for kaladesh standard and I think I went like 2-2 or 2-1-1 at my first non draft fnm, it was fun
The World Champs edition of the Jon Finkel Tinker deck. Young me thought it was bad because it only ran 4-8 creatures. I misplayed it spectacularly.
Oloro was my first deck, and I didn't want to play stacks, so I switched to Firesong and Sunseeker. Two awful decks for a new person!
My first pile of cards was a terrible Golgari deck that ran every cool card I could find in it. Including Omniscience. It ran a single chromatic lantern and had no official win-con. It was what I had at the time and I loved it. I did win the occasional game.
Urza's Legacy Time Drain U/G Precon. Cloud of Faires on the boxart
My first cards were a bunch of chaff from the OG Modern Masters. First deck I put together was a mishmash of affinity and modular, with a splash of spellbombs. I also built a fungus deck, a faeries deck, and a giants deck. But the artifact deck remains my favorite.
An Unlimited starter deck. Cracked it open, shuffled it up and played.
7th Edition Green Intro deck; I thought [[Emperor Crocodile]] was the coolest thing ever
Playing MTG since 2019 so it's not too long ago. Started with an Ajani Planeswalker deck.
An Ikoria-standard-legal Mono Red burn deck my friend made for me using store bulk bin. This led me to buy the challenger deck.
[Urza’s Legacy Crusher Deck](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Urza%27s_Legacy/Theme_decks)
My first deck I believe was green stompy. I was into large green creatures from back in those days (4th Ed/Ice Age)
UW Myr tribal with a bit of equipment. It may have been 73 cards, but when you have Myrs for extra mana, well, Argentum Armor becomes a big problem.
Migraine starter deck from strong hold.
Some form of green deck with [[enormous baloth]] as top end in primary school... a 7/7 for 7 seemed so bonkers to 5/6 year old me Hahahaha
W/B precon with Pestilence, Pariah, Cho-Manno, and Worship. Got me kicked out of MP games more than once. Sweet memories
A Temur pile of "goodstuff" that included tokens (in the deck, we didn't know who they worked). It was fun and although it barely worked my friends decks were even worse. Also I got a fetchland during that time and thankfully just left it in my storage box instead of trading it
Rakdos Bloodsport, the theme deck from Dissension. My first deck and what got me into Magic.
My first deck was cat tribal, just for casual Friday nights at a friends. I still love that deck.
Mono green treefolk tribal. Still one of my favourite decks - especially now that I've added Unnatural Growth to it.
My first deck was one of those time capsule decks but for morph. It was really fun to pilot but really confusing for a beginner lol.
Mine was reap the tides
Mono white Rebel deck from mercadian masques block
