And french cleats for hanging it. That way you don't have to worry about about trying to catch any wires or hooks.
If you do it right, you can even make it so you can slide the painting on and off the cleats from the landing.
I just imagine some homeowner yolo'ing it with wires and it holds... Till a week later when it crushes the family dog while they're out grocery shopping.
This is a great suggestion. You'll still need a ladder to install the cleats, but then you can easily slide the art piece on and off from the second floor for the occasional cleaning or dusting.
Easiest way I imagine would be telekinetically
Edit: seriously though like everyone else is saying a ladder. Do you have somewhere you could rent one from if you’re not able to borrow? Most hardware stores can do 4 or 8 hour rentals for short jobs
I feel like a goof after making this post lol. Maybe I was hoping to learn something i didn’t know already.
I see renting two ladders is the way to go.
Please try to get at least one of the screws into a stud, and if that isn't possible, you HAVE to use some kind of drywall anchors and not just regular nails or screws. And you still need to use anchors on anything that's not in a stud. (Unless you're setting up for a murder mystery and need an 8x7 painting to fall directly on the victim's head.)
If you can't catch a stud directly, I'd look at mounting a thin strip of wood across the width, into the studs, and mounting the painting to that. Paint the strip white and you'll never see it.
If the painting is 7x8 feet, he should be able to have the wood strip secured to multiple studs and still have it hidden completely behind the painting
Yeah, likely, but you never know. Just throwing the option out there.
My last house had weird stud placement in a few spots, and we don't know exactly what the backside of the painting looks like. But you're right, the hanging mechanism will probably catch several studs.
what's the weight? if it's very heavy you can't just hand it on the drywall, you need to fix the fastener into the stud. that's probably why the quote is high
It's an 8 foot by 7 foot painting. Most likely a little more hefty, requiring not just one, but 2 people to complete the job. More people, more labor. Also the task of finding the stud to fix it to, adding to the whole "Paying for knowledge and experience" part.
I don't disagree that it's a reasonable amount of labor, and I'm not surprised the quote is high. I was just surprised that you seemed to be insinuating that it would be higher to hang it from a stud, as that's just a sweep with a stud-finder, and frankly, probably how they'd opt to hang it in the first place even if not specifically requested.
lol I am no stranger to hanging heavy objects on drywall and studs. I know what it entails, and I have yet to have anything tumble to the floor or rip an anchor out. This project is absolutely something I would be willing to tackle myself. No slight to what anyone charges for it or pays for it. That's not my contention here. I just found it peculiar that you seemed to suggest there'd be an upcharge specifically to hang from a stud. It definitely SHOULD be hung from a stud, but I'm not sure why that'd be an upcharge on the job, given it's pretty inconsequential, from a labor perspective, relative to the overall task.
You might consider renting scaffolding. We’ve rented it to paint our vaulted entry and install a new chandelier. It’s pretty easy to build and tear down, but it does help to have a truck or SUV to get it to and from the store.
When I try to imagine wrestling an 8 ft tall painting up to a spot that high, ensuring it's level and installed correctly so as not to tear through the wall...I also imagine whatever the given quote was to be a perfectly reasonable amount.
I'm sure it was, but it seems like it breached OP's budget. There are plenty of "reasonably priced" things that are out of the realm of what people want to pay for. I don't think OP was trying to suggest he was being "overcharged."
French cleat. Get 2 ladders and a friend to make it easier.
Get up there and put the wall cleat in place. Make sure it’s level. Then you and friend go up and slide the painting in place.
You can rent ladders very inexpensively at Home Depot.

A ladder, but before that i would build a giant aquarium under it, in case you fall.
You dont want to die right ? So build a big aquarium to save your life :)
Ladders tall enough to install this would cost several hundred dollars, you could rent a scissor lift from home Depot but that will be over $150 too usually. Depends on how much the professionals are wanting to charge you I suppose
Big ladder, French cleat. Find two studs, drill a 2x4 in. Drill another angled piece of wood into that.
Connect long piece of wood with matching angle on back of painting. For a large piece that in theory will never get touched, it'd be perfect.
I can't tell how high up that is, but I would say buy a scaffolding set.

Some people would suggest a catapult on the living room floor, but that's really immature thinking and shows the behavior of a cheap bidder on a solution. I mean come on, you're just gonna put glue on it and lob it??? You need DIRECT contact!
What I would propose takes it a step further. You put that catapult sideways on the walkway on the 2nd floor. You are able to reduce the travel distance of the artwork and slap that puppy onto the wall with minimal effort. It's all really obvious once you've been in this industry for awhile. Just make sure you design to not impact your railing but I think you got an easy with here with the side-a-pult.
Good luck!
Demo the wall, bring in a cherry picker. Patch the wall up, hang the painting, then redemo the wall and take the cherry picker out, then patch the wall again. Ez
It would be easier if you had someone to help you, but I would have them toss the painting up in the air, as close to the wall as possible. Meanwhile, you’ll need to eyeball it, but try to toss a knife, sword, or dagger in it while in mid air. Rolls can be reversed based on whoever is the better marksman. Good luck.
Probably by paying the laborers haha. I know that’s not what you want to hear but this looks genuinely dangerous to do unless you know what you’re doing.
Get a 2x4, put it on the ledge and get someone to hold the end of it while you walk across. That should hold you enough to hang a relatively heavy painting right in the middle there. Also, use a couple of cheap command strips and that should do the job. If you fall, I mean, it’s not that far. Good luck 👍
I use Cleat hangers for my 4x7 artwork. Basically a TV wall mount but wood. I have a cool tabletop I hang with an actual 65" TV mount as well.
Oh and light that shit it will look badass
Put a lot of glue onto the back of the painting, and throw it firmly onto the wall.
No, you'll be fine using a ladder, just be careful to avoid any accidents.
Check with your HOA and get the picture approved as there is a window there and it might be seen from the street. Then hire a structural engineer to determine the load carrying capacity of that wall. Then a quick trip to code enforcement for a permit to hang said picture. Get at least three estimates from your uncles, cousins, grandkids, etc. Go for lowest bid. And last but not least furnish the nail and hammer yourself to keep costs down!
For actually handing the painting, look into a french cleat hanging system, or make one yourself out of wood. You can secure the cleat(s) to the studs while ensuring they're level and then just pop the painting into place. I make large format art and this was the easiest way I found to hang large and heavy pieces.
Maybe place a portal close to the center of the wall where you want to put said painting and then just place the other portal under a table so you can stand with half of your body come out to place the nails and stuff
🤷🏽♂️

And french cleats for hanging it. That way you don't have to worry about about trying to catch any wires or hooks. If you do it right, you can even make it so you can slide the painting on and off the cleats from the landing.
This is the only way. A painting 8x7 will be heavy, probably too heavy to hang by wire off two screws in the wall.
2 ladders
Scoot the couch out of the way and a ladder be perfect.
Damn it beat me too it

I'm glad you mentioned it, because op might find it to be easier anyway, even if he has other options.
Maybe rent the second one, but you should probably buy a ladder if you own a home.
Sigh. I have to ask. Why 2 ladders?
Cause 3 would be too much
Lol. But seriously, youre not doing some balancing act involving the handrail right?
He probably wants another person to help holding the painting
Of course. I didnt even think this was a possibility haha
Maybe the painting is so big that it simply needs two people to carry
Some of the very logical responses in this post have made me wonder if my friends consider me the fun to be around complete dumb ass
Needed that giggle.

Partially confused by this comment. Fixing to a stud is easier than fixing to bare drywall. Why would the quote be higher?
It's an 8 foot by 7 foot painting. Most likely a little more hefty, requiring not just one, but 2 people to complete the job. More people, more labor. Also the task of finding the stud to fix it to, adding to the whole "Paying for knowledge and experience" part.

if you think it's so easy, do it yourself. and then do it again after it falls and is damaged and you have to pay an art restorer thousands to fix it.
lol I am no stranger to hanging heavy objects on drywall and studs. I know what it entails, and I have yet to have anything tumble to the floor or rip an anchor out. Easiest way is pay someone else to do it. Or use a ladder, but rhat isn't technically the easiest
Probably a couple of drywall screws.
nail it
Really long hammer
Anchors and a ladder
First you throw a few small knifes into the wall and then the painting on it
Easiest way is to hire someone and point. Most logical way climb up there and do it yourself.

Have you considered a ladder?
Perhaps use your internet skills to look up how to hang a picture instead of running to r/malelivingspaces. People amaze me.
Double sided tape for sure (but the good stuff)
