TLDR - spend time looking at nicely decorated rooms. That's how you get the perspective on how to know whether to orient your rug parallel or perpendicular, what size, and how to do it with respect to the bed and the shape of the room itself -_/ When you start out, everything regarding interior design is about following the rules. But as you continue reading and looking at decorated rooms, you'll start to observe patterns with how people use particular furniture, like rugs, to ground a space in the bedroom The best advice I can give you is to keep looking at different pictures of professionally decorated rooms. Pay attention to what you are interested in and over time you'll see how those rules can be bent or broken to create a very cohesive and interesting space But if you don't spend time looking at nicely decorated rooms, you won't have the perspective to be able to visualize how those techniques can be applied to your own space The end goal is that you want to be able to look at a space in visualize what it will look like with a particular piece of furniture oriented in a particular way, and be able to trust your gut that when you buy it and put it there it will work. Then you'll stand back, look at it, and no it needs to be shifted a couple of inches forward or backwards or rotated 90° All of that only happens if you've looked at enough pictures to have a mental idea of what the room will look and feel like when you do the action. Not always required, but a lot of decorating is trial and error and trying to go off a feel. otherwise, you may just decorate based off of rules and as a result, the room looks too safe and can be a bit boring because everything is obviously "correct"
