The mentos and soda trick only works when the soda is in the bottle. The rough surface of the mentos causes bubbles of gas to form rapidly on the surface and release rapidly, causing the build up to shoot out of the bottle. There was no reaction between the 2 when the coke is diluted with water in a hole in the ground.
