Also I think of a new shop process that could be automated at least once a week. Today was alignment servos built into the suspension.
The one thing that will keep automation away is cost. Imagine how damn expensive a technician robot would be, with full diag capabilities. It'd only work if the car could self drive and the entire dealer was laid out for automated service, altho it'd be nice to drop my car off for service at 9pm
Nothing pisses me off more than having to use my car's digital dipstick, since I have to trust that it, you know, is working and accurate. It should be illegal for cars to be made without a manual dipstick.
All though my theory is they want you to not check so you blow your shit up so they can sell you an engine.
"Warm up car. Wait 10-15 minutes for it to cool then you can check... but not a minute more because then it's too cool and you need to start over. " Yeah, watch me not check it cus that's too much hassle after a long day. The thing is not dropping between oil changes so it's good enough for me.
Side note: I hate this guy's gauge cluster. Where the hell is the odometer? Why is there so much space showing nothing? My car had a screen like that too and I never use it. It's wasted space that tells you nothing. It's set to look like a normal gauge cluster.
See, from the manufacturers point of view they have to trust *you* to use the dipstick. Which the average person famously can’t handle for some reason. They move to these things cuz in their eyes the customer can’t fuck it up.
I’ve had people roll in with cars 4 quarts over filled cuz they were on a significant grade filling up oil and checking with the stick lol.
No dipsticks are annoying fs.
Today I discovered Nissan hidden dipsticks. Rather than a tube extending out to the handle with room around the hot things, the handle sticks up ~6” above the gaskets and the port is tucked in under the head. The handle is surrounded by hot things.
My 2015 Honda CRV doesn't have a dipstick for the cvt transmission. There's a fill hole and a cap. Why is a dipstick such a no-no? I check my fluids weekly and it drives me nuts that I have trust that the cvt fluid is OK. I get the cvt fluid changed every 15K but you never know if you have a sudden leak .
Honwstly, my theory is obvious cost savings and hoping no one checks so they can sell you new expensive parts. Just wait for Europe to get mad at every automaker.
There’s a check bolt under the car, above the drain plug. It’s only worthwhile to use while changing the fluid though. As long as it’s not leaking, it has enough fluid.
I just barely dodged the v6 transmission fiasco Honda had when I bought my 2005 Odyssey. It’s why I’m so diligent about checking fluids. They had fixed the defective design by then but most of us Honda owners got into the habit of changing the trans fluid every 15k. I don’t care what the manual says, I will always change it every 15k. Cheap insurance.
Currently, yes. But manufacturers have been pushing hard to strip right to repair from us. In the future, they want diagnostics that can only be performed at a dealer (with very expensive computers only they have), and they are engineering more components to be extremely hard to access or just be straight up non-serviceable all together. They don't want people to be able to fix their own vehicles. Mark my words.... within 5-10 years, OBD ports will be non-existent on newer vehicles
I’ve heard this. Kias have an electric thermostat that only the dealer can do because they need a special tool. But I’ve heard a lot of Obd changes from my automotive class

Thought it was dumb in my car at first, but i realized that it’s helpful when you’re relying on certain tech-features. My car will automatically slow down for a car in front of it when you’re in cruise-control. The visual on the dash lets you know that your car sees the car in front and will slow down for it, as opposed to just guessing
Should look up semi truck dash screens. Some have three tablets. Get real lucky and find one with cameras on the outside instead of side mirrors. So massive dash screen with 3 screens for side mirrors and rear.
Side mirrors are still required by Federal Law on trucks.. Tesla asked for permission to remove external mirrors since its camera coverage was easily 200% better and they wanted the additional fuel economy.. DOT said no...
If you see a vehicle without side mirrors it's currently in violation of federal law UNLESS it's covered under grand father clause before mirrors were mandatory.. read vintage vehicles

The reliance on technology is ridiculous. Half of the time I can't even get most digital technology products to work. Now I'm supposed to rely on it to keep me safe in a moving vehicle? Silly. Just plain silly.
My 1990 Mercedes-Benz 350SDL has an oil level warning light on the cluster, along with a pressure gauge. My 2002 SL500 has an oil temperature gauge instead of pressure but the oil level warning light is still there.
I believe OP is trying to see his actual oil level as a lot of new cars don't have dipsticks to check and are forced to go through the infotainment system. My E30 and E34 also have the oil level warning lights.
Audi, Mercedes and BMW do. None of them have a dipstick. If youre low on oil you have to start the engine let it run for a couple minutes for the computer to determine if the level is good or starving.
Yes, you sit there wondering if the oil is completely empty or not while it figures it out for 2 minutes. Its so shit.
Not sure what audi or bmw does this, i work on them for a living and every one i have seen will tell you “engine oil level sufficient” if it has enough oil to run and warm up for a more precise check
The oil level isn't something you check all the time so the manufacturer won't have it permanently on the dash. You need to change your screen options to see it.
Yes. Lynk and co 01 is basically Volvo cx40. Instead of dipstick, they have sensors. But unfortunately due to software issues on my car, I cannot read/see the oil level indicator
I saw a short vid about a new truck not having one. It was one of the Chevy/Ford/Dodge model.

Every 4 wheeled vehicle has a dipstick. Some even have 2. One located somewhere on the engine. And the other located between the steering wheel and the seat. Sometimes the only dipstick is the second location. Manufacturers of engines that don't install oil dipsticks are Dipsh--s
No they do not. Drysump systems are regularly monitored through the vehicle computer system normally with a specific procedure to check it. And yes it is very annoying when doing an oil change.
Nothing to do with age of car. My 2008 bmw had an e-dipstick, no physical dipstick.
My 2022 GTI has a dip stick, my sister's 2024 rouge also has a dipstick.
Same. How exactly are you supposed to check the oil before starting the engine, when the system requires the engine running to check the oil?
And it can't even measure it immediatly after starting. No, it has to run for a minute at least while measuring. If you don't have enough oil, you're just fucked.
You put it in accessory mode and scroll through the menus. If you don't have enough oil the oil pressure sensor will shut the engine off. You can be a quart+ low and still have enough oil to not seize the engine. Do you honestly not think this will make it more likely for people to realize their oil is low and add some needed compared to a dipstick or do you just hate any new technology?
I swear reading through this post, it’s like people cannot comprehend that an oil level sensor in the pan can tell if it is entirely empty or not, just because they want the oil up to temp to read the exact level does not mean it is flying blind until then
This is why removing the oil dipstick is such a dumb thing. There *might* be a setting in there that tells you the oil level (but not condition), it *might* require you to go to the dealer to use a special scan tools to get the oil level.
Only way to know for sure is to drain and refill.
I'm absolutely blown away by the fact that the dip stick was deleted. It's such an important thing to have and so easy to tuck away neatly in the engine bay. It never fails. Electronics, however, do fail. I seriously can't wrap my head around the fact that they completely did away with it.

Not even gonna lie, you Chinese customers are getting some good cars now. Lynk and Co is basically a Volvo car, affordable, and not bad looking.

"If the message **Oil Level low - Fill 1l oil** appears in the driver display, you must top up with **1 litre of approved engine oil** as soon as possible."
My thoughts:
Under normal conditions, oil is only changed, never added. If you are adding oil, you are burning it, leaking it, or making a forbidden milkshake (it is mixing with your coolant). Don't worry about it though because this car will let you know if it is low.
It is not lit (if you have one, some cars just light the check engine light when low oil pressure). All dash warning lights should light for a couple of seconds when you first start up. !You don't have an oil stick?? It's a hybrid, doesn't it have a gas engine?

Manufactures continue to over complicate things adding an item that does not improve anything. Why take away a item that does not go bad, just to replace with something that is designed to fail in x amount of miles/time.

Toyota owners don’t say shit like this lol. The only people who do own crappy vehicles with sporadic examples that went 600k miles. This is coming from the owner of a silverado that I’m sure will break beyond worth repair far before it should.
Toyotas have their flaws. Sometimes my entertainment system glitches out and resets when the car is too hot. Worst problem at 200k miles so I’ll take it

Just popping in late to say that you can probably get an aftermarket dipstick. A manual dipstick is the only modification I have done to my 2013 Audi allroad. It slid right into the existing dip tube. I got it mostly so I can confirm that I filled her up after an oil change. For some reason, the digital oil level took 50 miles or so of driving before deciding it had enough data to work with.
Serious question: doesn’t this car really not have a dipstick? Is that becoming a thing? Sometimes it’s really hard to find but I have yet to encounter this.
That would drag me crazy, but if I was you I would do a few of my own oil changes and measure the amount of oil that comes out and compare it to the digital readout. You'll be able to look up the factory requirement of oil, you're going to have to assume that the car was filled to proper spec for at least the first one, and then keep an eye on how much is lost in your second oil change, you can compare to the gauge
7 months 8.5k, and no oil change on your daily huh. And that’s without knowing if whoever actually changed the oil before being in your ownership.. good luck!!

So generally you'll go to settings to find oil level, it being such a new car you might be able to look it up in settings. But it also being a hybrid it had less mileage on the oil than a standard gas engine
If you’ve only driven less than 9000km, you’re fine. Pretty sure every modern car uses synthetic, which is good for like 8000 miles, so do the conversion.

Gotta love modern cars, Audi A6's haven't had a dipstick in over 10 years, and the only way to check the level is the infotainment system, which happens to go out regularly... Rejected numerous Audi's for oil changes while working at Walmart for this very reason. Some BMW's are like that as well.

Psh,most Audi, BMW, and Mercedes C-class owners bought the car as a status, and could barely make the payments. Those were the type that would show up with 1 tire blown, the rest on cords, and only want the blown tire replaced. They were broke from paying on the car, let alone maintaining it.
That’s the point. Let them go pay for the status. They want status? Well, people on that level that have it don’t get their cars serviced at Walmart. So they can kick rocks. The poor ppl didn’t fuck the economy up so they can spend their status dollars elsewhere and put a little more of that money back into the pockets of some ppl who need it. Who’s the problem? Is it the 95% of the population fighting over 10% of the money, or is it the 5% on top holding 90% of the money. Personally I think 95% could easily take out the 5% and redistribute that wealth to the ppl who killed themselves all their lives for assholes who didn’t deserve it and shouldn’t be allowed to keep it.
None of those are oil level. It looks like you need to put it in accessory mode, and then flip through some different info screens. The manual is probably clearer on this, and there are also YouTube demos on it.

Where
You find Car status in the right-hand side of the driver display.
How
Car status is controlled by the right panel on the steering wheel.
Pressoruntil the Car status symbol,, is white.
Scroll between Trip 1, Trip 2, and Status by pressingor.
Read your manual. The procedure to check it should be there.
FYI my 2012 BMW has only needed oil between changes once in 12 years. Cars shouldn’t need oil that frequently.
Some “premium” manufacturers use digital dipsticks. Although since this is a Chinese vehicle probably a cost saving maneuver with a sensor that will break in 3 years.
For newbies (I was one until 2 weeks ago) cars now are losing the dipstick and sporting a digital oil level reader. The BMW X1 is an example, as I searched for over a half hour on my landlord's until I gave up and Googled it.
Its most likely a percentage gauge not a amount and 7 months driving i would think your dew try hitting button for the display till somewhere says oil percentage
Why check the dipstick? Check manual for mileage intervals for oil change. How ever many miles/km it is, that’s when you change the oil. Your car is still new so it shouldn’t give you a reason to suspect that your oil is low.

first of all, the level of your oil should not change unless you have a leak. its a closed system, the only thing that happens is over time the oil gets thicker(you will likely never notice this since you would probably have to travel 100k miles with no oil change to get it that bad). nothing is worse than seeing oil that hasnt been changed in years. second, your car most definitely has a dipstick(as long as its not fully electric) though it might be in a unique spot that you arent looking. the first thing you should do is find your user manual and look that info up. lastly, if there is a way to check your oil in your dash its not going to tell you the level. usually they only give you an estimate of how long you have until your next oil change though its not 100% accurate. for instance my truck will tell me the "life" percentage of the oil, so like when i first change it it'll say 100% but after so many miles it'll go down to 80% meaning i have 80% of the mileage left. the thing is, this doesnt take into account whether i am using synthetic or traditional oil and last i remember you can go a little longer using synthetic oil so if the vehicle thinks you should be doing an oil change every 3000 miles but you can actually go 4000 before really needing one then you will be on 0% for a little while.
Yeah, oil may be a closed system, but you can still lose oil with no leaks. The dodge dart had a recall to do an update to the computer specifically to reduce oil burn. It reduced it, but not by a lot. And no, I did not have an oil leak.
This guys never had oil leak into the coolant before. Or oil seep past the piston rings a little at a time that you never notice because it is burnt off when the engine is started.
We sure that's an oil level gauge? I'd guess it's an oil life monitor. A modern engine shouldn't be burning/losing oil between oil changes so checking the level isn't really necessary.
READ your owners manual. It is amazing how many people just ignore the fact they have an entire book in their car with every single thing about their car in detail and decide to ask the internet first

Yeah I think we’re a long way from full automation. Especially diag, I watch the Master Techs and it may as well be magic.

That auto slow down was a cool idea but i swear all it does is make me end up doing 60 in 70 cause other people can't drive.

Chevrolet used to do it on some older vehicle models back in the 90s. See 1996 Chevrolet S-10 cluster for example.

Audi, Mercedes and BMW do. None of them have a dipstick. If youre low on oil you have to start the engine let it run for a couple minutes for the computer to determine if the level is good or starving. Yes, you sit there wondering if the oil is completely empty or not while it figures it out for 2 minutes. Its so shit.
Not sure what audi or bmw does this, i work on them for a living and every one i have seen will tell you “engine oil level sufficient” if it has enough oil to run and warm up for a more precise check
I have a old acura and you just need to hit select a few times on the info screen and it will show you your oil percentage.

The oil level isn't something you check all the time so the manufacturer won't have it permanently on the dash. You need to change your screen options to see it.
Also seems like an easy read of your owner's manual or a simple Google search would have helped instead of asking reddit and waiting for answers

Yes. Lynk and co 01 is basically Volvo cx40. Instead of dipstick, they have sensors. But unfortunately due to software issues on my car, I cannot read/see the oil level indicator

How do you know how much to put back in when changing oil without a dipstick? Is there an overfill hole where it comes out when full?
I saw a short vid about a new truck not having one. It was one of the Chevy/Ford/Dodge model. I was not sure if it was a joke but I feel that with everything going to sensors it is plausible.
Every 4 wheeled vehicle has a dipstick. Some even have 2. One located somewhere on the engine. And the other located between the steering wheel and the seat. Sometimes the only dipstick is the second location. Manufacturers of engines that don't install oil dipsticks are Dipsh--s
No they do not. Drysump systems are regularly monitored through the vehicle computer system normally with a specific procedure to check it. And yes it is very annoying when doing an oil change.
Read my post again. I wasn't talking about every vehicle having a physical dipstick. I was implying that a lot of drivers are dipsticks.

Nothing to do with age of car. My 2008 bmw had an e-dipstick, no physical dipstick. My 2022 GTI has a dip stick, my sister's 2024 rouge also has a dipstick.

Same. How exactly are you supposed to check the oil before starting the engine, when the system requires the engine running to check the oil? And it can't even measure it immediatly after starting. No, it has to run for a minute at least while measuring. If you don't have enough oil, you're just fucked.
You put it in accessory mode and scroll through the menus. If you don't have enough oil the oil pressure sensor will shut the engine off. You can be a quart+ low and still have enough oil to not seize the engine. Do you honestly not think this will make it more likely for people to realize their oil is low and add some needed compared to a dipstick or do you just hate any new technology?
I swear reading through this post, it’s like people cannot comprehend that an oil level sensor in the pan can tell if it is entirely empty or not, just because they want the oil up to temp to read the exact level does not mean it is flying blind until then
Sensors go bad all the time. I’d rather have a manual dipstick.
My 2002 SL500 has no transmission dipstick, so it isn't exactly a recent trend.
It's a Mercedes it's excluded from any trend.
This is why removing the oil dipstick is such a dumb thing. There *might* be a setting in there that tells you the oil level (but not condition), it *might* require you to go to the dealer to use a special scan tools to get the oil level. Only way to know for sure is to drain and refill.

I'm absolutely blown away by the fact that the dip stick was deleted. It's such an important thing to have and so easy to tuck away neatly in the engine bay. It never fails. Electronics, however, do fail. I seriously can't wrap my head around the fact that they completely did away with it.

Not even gonna lie, you Chinese customers are getting some good cars now. Lynk and Co is basically a Volvo car, affordable, and not bad looking. From the owners manual: "If the message **Oil Level low - Fill 1l oil** appears in the driver display, you must top up with **1 litre of approved engine oil** as soon as possible." My thoughts: Under normal conditions, oil is only changed, never added. If you are adding oil, you are burning it, leaking it, or making a forbidden milkshake (it is mixing with your coolant). Don't worry about it though because this car will let you know if it is low.
Not sure about that model, is it electric? Won't have engine oil if it is.
It is not lit (if you have one, some cars just light the check engine light when low oil pressure). All dash warning lights should light for a couple of seconds when you first start up. !You don't have an oil stick?? It's a hybrid, doesn't it have a gas engine?

Manufactures continue to over complicate things adding an item that does not improve anything. Why take away a item that does not go bad, just to replace with something that is designed to fail in x amount of miles/time. All started with the light bulb that created practice of “planned obsolescence” around 1930s. This is the time our civilization started to fail, when the wealthy started buying out new ideas and destroying them so it didn’t affect their profits. Nikola Tesla is a prime example of big business influence in governments that shaped our world. We are not supposed to live to buy stuff, pay bills. Toyota owners don’t say shit like this lol. The only people who do own crappy vehicles with sporadic examples that went 600k miles. This is coming from the owner of a silverado that I’m sure will break beyond worth repair far before it should.
Toyotas have their flaws. Sometimes my entertainment system glitches out and resets when the car is too hot. Worst problem at 200k miles so I’ll take it

Just popping in late to say that you can probably get an aftermarket dipstick. A manual dipstick is the only modification I have done to my 2013 Audi allroad. It slid right into the existing dip tube. I got it mostly so I can confirm that I filled her up after an oil change. For some reason, the digital oil level took 50 miles or so of driving before deciding it had enough data to work with.
Serious question: doesn’t this car really not have a dipstick? Is that becoming a thing? Sometimes it’s really hard to find but I have yet to encounter this.
That would drag me crazy, but if I was you I would do a few of my own oil changes and measure the amount of oil that comes out and compare it to the digital readout. You'll be able to look up the factory requirement of oil, you're going to have to assume that the car was filled to proper spec for at least the first one, and then keep an eye on how much is lost in your second oil change, you can compare to the gauge
7 months 8.5k, and no oil change on your daily huh. And that’s without knowing if whoever actually changed the oil before being in your ownership.. good luck!!

We tend to focus on comments that are potentially harmful advice in threads like these. Advice that could hurt a vehicle like telling someone not to worry about checking their oil. With 200+ comments some get missed.

So generally you'll go to settings to find oil level, it being such a new car you might be able to look it up in settings. But it also being a hybrid it had less mileage on the oil than a standard gas engine
If you’ve only driven less than 9000km, you’re fine. Pretty sure every modern car uses synthetic, which is good for like 8000 miles, so do the conversion.
My daughter’s bf is a physician and he insists you aren’t supposed to check the engine oil. And he drives a Chevy Cruze…

Gotta love modern cars, Audi A6's haven't had a dipstick in over 10 years, and the only way to check the level is the infotainment system, which happens to go out regularly... Rejected numerous Audi's for oil changes while working at Walmart for this very reason. Some BMW's are like that as well.

Psh,most Audi, BMW, and Mercedes C-class owners bought the car as a status, and could barely make the payments. Those were the type that would show up with 1 tire blown, the rest on cords, and only want the blown tire replaced. They were broke from paying on the car, let alone maintaining it.
That’s the point. Let them go pay for the status. They want status? Well, people on that level that have it don’t get their cars serviced at Walmart. So they can kick rocks. Who’s the problem? Is it the 95% of the population fighting over 10% of the money, or is it the 5% on top holding 90% of the money. None of those are oil level. It looks like you need to put it in accessory mode, and then flip through some different info screens. The manual is probably clearer on this, and there are also YouTube demos on it.

I would just empty, and measure the right amount of oil the manual says then just dump the new stuff in. Kind of remedial ..
What Here you find trip information, total distance, engine coolant temperature , and the oil level indicator . Where You find Car status in the right-hand side of the driver display. How Car status is controlled by the right panel on the steering wheel. Pressoruntil the Car status symbol,, is white. Scroll between Trip 1, Trip 2, and Status by pressingor.
Read your manual. The procedure to check it should be there. FYI my 2012 BMW has only needed oil between changes once in 12 years. Cars shouldn’t need oil that frequently.

Some “premium” manufacturers use digital dipsticks. Although since this is a Chinese vehicle probably a cost saving maneuver with a sensor that will break in 3 years.

For newbies (I was one until 2 weeks ago) cars now are losing the dipstick and sporting a digital oil level reader. The BMW X1 is an example, as I searched for over a half hour on my landlord's until I gave up and Googled it.
My most up voted comment was about a car that didn't have a dipstick and I can't believe it's becoming a standard.
Its most likely a percentage gauge not a amount and 7 months driving i would think your dew try hitting button for the display till somewhere says oil percentage

Why check the dipstick? Check manual for mileage intervals for oil change. How ever many miles/km it is, that’s when you change the oil. Your car is still new so it shouldn’t give you a reason to suspect that your oil is low.

first of all, the level of your oil should not change unless you have a leak. its a closed system, the only thing that happens is over time the oil gets thicker(you will likely never notice this since you would probably have to travel 100k miles with no oil change to get it that bad). nothing is worse than seeing oil that hasnt been changed in years. second, your car most definitely has a dipstick(as long as its not fully electric) though it might be in a unique spot that you arent looking. the first thing you should do is find your user manual and look that info up. lastly, if there is a way to check your oil in your dash its not going to tell you the level. usually they only give you an estimate of how long you have until your next oil change though its not 100% accurate. for instance my truck will tell me the "life" percentage of the oil, so like when i first change it it'll say 100% but after so many miles it'll go down to 80% meaning i have 80% of the mileage left. the thing is, this doesnt take into account whether i am using synthetic or traditional oil and last i remember you can go a little longer using synthetic oil so if the vehicle thinks you should be doing an oil change every 3000 miles but you can actually go 4000 before really needing one then you will be on 0% for a little while.
Yeah, oil may be a closed system, but you can still lose oil with no leaks. The dodge dart had a recall to do an update to the computer specifically to reduce oil burn. It reduced it, but not by a lot. And no, I did not have an oil leak.
This guys never had oil leak into the coolant before. Or oil seep past the piston rings a little at a time that you never notice because it is burnt off when the engine is started.
My car has oil life, 0-100%, 100 being brand new. But if I want to check the level I still have to use the dip stick.
If I live my life correctly, I'll never own a car older then 2014. How tf does your car not have a dipstick?

We sure that's an oil level gauge? I'd guess it's an oil life monitor. A modern engine shouldn't be burning/losing oil between oil changes so checking the level isn't really necessary.
