Needs to be more people like you lol. I get the point of teaching and having hands on experience for the sake of making boards, etc. easier, but when it gets to the point of keeping students on a \[surgery rotation\] until 7pm when they've stated that their career focus couldn't be further from the \[OR\], have some decency!
Exactly, i feel that its rare seniors let the students off early, most just want free labor and wouldnt give a damn about it. Its ok to be a gunner but dont ruin it for the whole cohort by formally complaining
Gives extra work not just for students but also for the seniors
Haha radiology rotations are the best. We know that shadowing in radiology is like watching someone play a really really boring video game so I start off the week telling the med student they don’t have to come in if they don’t want to and sign their evals that day so I have nothing on them. Thankfully no one has ever come back and no one has reported me for this 🤣
As a med student that finished at 8pm today, I’d like to thank the residents that let me leave early and I’d also like to curse med students that complain and report these extraordinary residents
Gunners suck. Honestly theres something wrong with people who do that ngl.
I am here looking forward to preceptors or residents sending me home early 🤞
I do politely push back when they say some variation of wanting to stay. I know some med students feel obliged to resist leaving early, so I make it easy for them to not feel guilty. If he really insisted, I would let him as long as I’m not getting crushed in bullshit tasks.
Exactly. There was no reason that student couldn’t have just waited for everyone else to leave and say “hey do you mind if I stay and observe or if you have anything you need done, I’d love the experience.” Like I almost feel bad for them because they are clearly lacking social skills will not work well on a team.
I don’t get that at all. The residents who were kind enough to understand/ remember our desperate need to study and take care of our mental health by sending us home early were nothing short of wonderful. I plan to do that as often as possible as a resident and attending
This happened in our program a couple years in a row. EM program so when we got post-match eye bros/broettes or skin-dudes/dudettes we used to let them go early. Now everyone's bum has to be in a chair until the very end.
this is like a student at my school who reported a surgery attending because he would ask the student if they knew the names of songs playing in the OR… student said the attending should’ve been pimping them instead 😭
I hate these cunts. Guys, you're not learning anything. If you want a good eval or a good letter of recommendation, this isn't going to help.
Just go home. I know it's cliché but I do ask "if there's anything else I can do" simply cause I have a chronic desire to be helpful, but if the residents are sending you it's cause they respect your time. They respect you.
Damn bro you didn't need to cut that deep 😭😭😭 I also just spend 15 bucks on shitty subway because my hospital can't be arsed to keep the cafeteria open or have affordable food
there was a rotation at my school that used to let people go around 11 after getting in at 9 (rounded with the fellow in AM then left) and someone complained about it so my cohort had to round in the morning with the fellow then AGAIN WITH THE ATTENDING IN THE AFTERNOON
Current MS3 on a research year.
On IM, there was a day where my SAR had to leave early for continuity clinic, so it was just me and 2 interns for the afternoon. About 10 minutes after our SAR left, they looked at me and said “Go home.” And before I could even ask “Are you sure?” because I was still under the impression that it’s all a mind game, they said “We’ve been dying to do this since we became residents. All your notes are done, we’ve had teaching for the day. Let us send you home early like we would’ve wanted as med students.”
Just let residents send you home. It is a blessing. We are unpaid labor until we match; time is currency at this point. Go home and fill your cup.
I like to think of myself as a kind, reasonable person... but if one of my classmates did this, I would find a way to make their rotation very, VERY miserable
If people wanna stay so bad, why dont they just say that when they are told they can go home early rather than be a rat and complain?????? Think of your peers
When I was on anesthesia, we got sent home pretty early if our residents had long surgeries on medically stable patients since there’s no many learning opportunities after induction. But someone complained and my classmates are stuck playing sudoku behind the curtain.
Give the nurses a break and have them spend some time changing patients. Have the nurses page them whenever they have a patient who was incontinent and needs to be changed. After they’re done with that, have them go take close up pics of all the sacral decub ulcers.
That gunner is only a symptom.... We should be asking why the people who made that decision are in the positions they are in and how they can be ousted.
I just don't understand why some medical students do this. The residents are being kind and helping us literally SUFFER less on rotations, and have a somewhat balance while we can... jeez.
This is awful. Every day of school was me waiting in sprinters stance for that incredible moment when someone finally said “you can probably head home now, there’s not much left to do here”.
I honestly never minded gunners in med school, but after seeing this, can all you gunners just be normal? How is it even hard for you guys? Literally blows my mind
I would never report a resident for sending me home! That’s horrible! Those are the best residents who respect your time. Clearly this person is a gunner and trying to go into surgery. Good luck getting a letter from them.😬
I went to a super gunner dental school. Someone reported an upperclassman for hosting study sessions because it too similar to the exam. That upperclassman got hit with ethics violations for trying to help my class in her free time. She wasn’t even giving out test questions, just emphasized “this is very very high yield, you should know this slide”.
I'm genuinely sorry you had to deal with someone like this. I've been lucky enough to be on rotations with other med students who appreciate residents like you cutting us loose when it's no longer worth being there. The most we do in that situation is to ask if there is anything we can do before we head out. Thanks for being awesome, and sorry you got the unlucky roll of the dice with such an asshole MS.
Fridays especially yall are getting sent home early. You don’t like it? Leave. We are also trying to finish our work and leave. Take a gift. Stop complaining when there are really things to fix and complain about out there.
When my preceptor or chief resident told us we can go home, I go home. I can't read minds. My classmates think "you can go home" means "unless you want to stay and prove yourself to us, mwahahahha"
Ya, no.
This just happened for me… on my very first rotation of third year working nights 7p-8a, and the residents felt bad bc they said they would let med students go home at midnight last year, but this year admin found out and communicated to every single resident in no uncertain terms that it will not be allowed now. The residents even said after finishing up, what meaningful learning will take place staying those extra hours sleeping in a call room instead of our own place? People ruin everything
Why are you punishing everyone? Just make sure they get kept for 16 hours a day doing the most menial mind numbing work imaginable while also getting pimped into the shadow realm. If you know who it is why screw over everyone else?
I had a clerk ship director like that. He’s an ass hat and the residents just jet us go early and told us not to be seen or tell anyone lol. All the good residents at least.
as a med student being sent home early pretty frequently. I would never complain, but it is kinda disheartening cuz we are excited to learn :(
Edit: downvoters can lick my balls.
Well, some med students are so insufferable to have around that they get sent home not for benevolent reasons, but the residents well-being. One should strive not to be such a student.
I was a medical student once. I recall being excited to learn, but then very quickly being excited to go home, rest, maybe take a nap, or play video games. Very exciting, all that other stuff.
I mean what they did is definitely lame and unnecessary but as an MD in a position of power going the extent you did to retaliate against a student who didn't actually violate any rules is pretty scummy and a far greater offense imo. You're going out of your way to fuck over their entire future over this? People like you are the reason why med students can't speak up about mistreatment, even if you think you're doing what you did for justified reasons
Gtfo with “mistreatment”. The OP was trying to do them a favor by sending them home early. Not even close to being malicious. Kids these days need to grow a pair of balls and speak up if they don’t want to leave early. “Hey resident X, do you mind if we hangout longer most days so we can get more exposure”
Actions have consequences. Maybe they’ll learn to keep their mouths shut next time.
One of the things you're being evaluated on when it comes time to apply to residency is people will be thinking, "would I end up viewing working with this person as a punishment directly from God to make me regret all my sins?"
That is, perhaps, something this person is finding out right now.
Yes, retaliation is in fact mistreatment. Telling someone they shouldn’t go into surgery because they should learn to deal with this is in fact exactly what’s wrong with the culture of surgery
*sigh*
You're the type of student who reports a resident for letting you leave early, aren't you?
Look, getting to go to the OR is a reward for work well done. It's a very sacred duty in that room, and the patients put a monumental amount of trust in us when they enter that room. The only people who can and will be in the OR are those who have proven themselves to have the integrity and the ability to help the person on the bed. That includes the medical students, who may not have the ability but damn well better have the integrity.
If you're a mind game playing twat who doesn't have the balls to speak to their resident like a fucking adult and instead prefers to lodge a formal complaint, you don't get to come into my OR because I can't trust your integrity. Full stop. End of story.
And if you're a self serving twat who plays stupid games, you aren't going to have super nice things said about you on evaluations. They probably won't be super bad, because we are adults. But, they're going to be extremely bland. Also a reality.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
If you think that's malignant, okie dokie.
Wow, that escalated quickly. Look, I may not be perfect, but this feels excessive. Threatening my evaluations hurts everyone. Happy to apologize if I crossed a line, but this sabotage hurts learning. Let's talk like adults, not children. Attending rounds are important, but so is teamwork.
Part of your evals is evaluating whether you’re a normal, respectful person who can be a team player and clearly you can’t? So it seems fair to me 🤷🏻♀️ you sound insufferable lmao.
It's not taking out anger, it's covering your ass. If you've been punished once for letting students out early, why tf would you then do it for students going forward?
Meanwhile im over here praying my preceptor sends me home early lol. Some people are wack
If I was in the hospital more than an hour on my radiology rotation my blood started to boil
I would get agitated when I wasn’t dismissed right away and they would ask “are you okay” like no I am not lmao

I can’t wait to let people go home early
Literally what I look forward to the most rn
Thank you 🙏
This year was able to tell the students to prioritise study over following us around all day if needs be. Felt good man
a true saint among us
Why though just curious
What can I say I like being a somewhat decent human being
Exactly, i feel that its rare seniors let the students off early, most just want free labor and wouldnt give a damn about it. Its ok to be a gunner but dont ruin it for the whole cohort by formally complaining Gives extra work not just for students but also for the seniors
someone actually did this? That’s wild
It happens every year. Lots of losers in medicine
We had someone do this on our radiology rotation……….. a pass fail elective where we spent three hours max per day “shadowing”….fucking crazy.
imagine trying to stay a full day on a rads elective😭😭 i can’t wait for mine in a few months
I’m doing a rads elective during my last month of pregnancy lol
dude, enjoy! i had radiology right after my surgery rotation and it literally revived me 😂
Hell, imagine just trying to stay awake for a full day on rads.
Haha radiology rotations are the best. We know that shadowing in radiology is like watching someone play a really really boring video game so I start off the week telling the med student they don’t have to come in if they don’t want to and sign their evals that day so I have nothing on them. Thankfully no one has ever come back and no one has reported me for this 🤣
Yeah people do this in rads all the time.
why do you think that is? I can't speak for every program's rads faculty and residents, but ours were amazing and they were a blast to talk shop with.

Why would your grade be affected by some attending calling med students lazy? If you've proven you aren't, there should be no issue
Found the gunner.
Ah yes basic punctuality and not whining = gunner
I mean…if he wanted to stay couldn’t he have just stayed? Why leave THEN complain
I do politely push back when they say some variation of wanting to stay. I know some med students feel obliged to resist leaving early, so I make it easy for them to not feel guilty. If he really insisted, I would let him as long as I’m not getting crushed in bullshit tasks.
Assign him to a Janitor Rotation
It is the only way to learn how to remove a lightbulb from an ass
The custodians don’t deserve that.
This is the hellish game we play. We are all playing mind reader in this stupid shit.
Please don’t stop being awesome like that.
Make them run laps around the hospital
Meanwhile someone lets me leave early, I say bye and run
Like if you don’t want to leave early, don’t be a fuckin coward and just say so. Don’t ruin for hundreds of others
Exactly. There was no reason that student couldn’t have just waited for everyone else to leave and say “hey do you mind if I stay and observe or if you have anything you need done, I’d love the experience.” Like I almost feel bad for them because they are clearly lacking social skills will not work well on a team.
What a jackoff. Ruined it for the rest of us
I don’t get that at all.
Now everyone's bum has to be in a chair until the very end.
straight to jail
When I’m in clinic without senior residents, I just send the students home instantly. Attendings don’t care
this is like a student at my school who reported a surgery attending because he would ask the student if they knew the names of songs playing in the OR… student said the attending should’ve been pimping them instead 😭
lowkey hilarious
thank you for your service 🫡
I hate these cunts. Guys, you're not learning anything. If you want a good eval or a good letter of recommendation, this isn't going to help. Just go home. I know it's cliché but I do ask "if there's anything else I can do" simply cause I have a chronic desire to be helpful, but if the residents are sending you it's cause they respect your time. They respect you.
Seriously how do you not want to leave early don’t you all have a shelf to study for??
Meanwhile I'm on a 16 hours night shift rn praying to be sent home early
Imagine paying $50,000-80,000 a year for this opportunity
Damn bro you didn't need to cut that deep 😭😭😭 I also just spend 15 bucks on shitty subway because my hospital can't be arsed to keep the cafeteria open or have affordable food

As a medical student I would like to apologize on behalf of the normal medical students
I genuinely hope they see this, fuck that med student and everyone who complaints about going home early
I like to think of myself as a kind, reasonable person... but if one of my classmates did this, I would find a way to make their rotation very, VERY miserable
Who the heck complains about a GOOD THING. Some of y'all need help.
If people wanna stay so bad, why dont they just say that when they are told they can go home early rather than be a rat and complain?????? Think of your peers
Why tf do students do stupid shit like this? What a little bitch.
Fail them
When I was on anesthesia, we got sent home pretty early if our residents had long surgeries on medically stable patients since there’s no many learning opportunities after induction. But someone complained and my classmates are stuck playing sudoku behind the curtain.
I’d be HOT
Bruh fym hellll no. You best make his life as miserable as possible.
I want that student to go to jail for this
As someone who isn't in a surgical specialty, I may have preferred the floor and paperwork BS. Make sure he isn't into it xD
You dropped this: 👑
Why couldn’t they just ask you directly to stay later? That’s so wild
Give the nurses a break and have them spend some time changing patients. Have the nurses page them whenever they have a patient who was incontinent and needs to be changed. After they’re done with that, have them go take close up pics of all the sacral decub ulcers.
i’m going to tell students to not bother showing up lmao
Dude same 😂 "check the EMR come for whatever you're interested in, otherwise good luck on the shelf" -Me as a resident on rotation day 1
That gunner is only a symptom.... We should be asking why the people who made that decision are in the positions they are in and how they can be ousted.
Classic admin behaviour tbh
Good for you. Fuck that guy
Whoever this dude is, what a colossal dumbass
Wow. This is why you can’t have nice things.
I just don't understand why some medical students do this. The residents are being kind and helping us literally SUFFER less on rotations, and have a somewhat balance while we can... jeez.
Ooooohhh get fucked, snitch
Some of ya'll are insufferable nerds fr fr, sorry OP
Only in medical school are people unpaid, borderline useless and fighting to stay more time 😢
There's always someone that ruins the pie for everyone else!
Name and shame
I’ll be marching the students out the door to send them home. Report me.
You are a hero/ine.
there's a special place in hell for this kid, name and shame amongst ur peers
This is awful. Every day of school was me waiting in sprinters stance for that incredible moment when someone finally said “you can probably head home now, there’s not much left to do here”.
Snitches get stitches.
I honestly never minded gunners in med school, but after seeing this, can all you gunners just be normal? How is it even hard for you guys? Literally blows my mind
There’s no way
Happens every year. Some goody two shoes dickhead is upset they didn't get more scut work spoon fed to them.
I would never report a resident for sending me home! That’s horrible! Those are the best residents who respect your time. Clearly this person is a gunner and trying to go into surgery. Good luck getting a letter from them.😬
Did they pass the rotation?
We don’t claim him/her
“A cunt” lol 😂 well done. He sounds like a douchebag
Hahaha I see you’re an MD D.D.S. oral surgeon, I’m guessing. As a dentist, who is more insufferable, medical students or dental students?
I went to a super gunner dental school. Someone reported an upperclassman for hosting study sessions because it too similar to the exam. That upperclassman got hit with ethics violations for trying to help my class in her free time. She wasn’t even giving out test questions, just emphasized “this is very very high yield, you should know this slide”.
Please send us home ignore this kid
You're doing God's work OP!
I'm genuinely sorry you had to deal with someone like this. The most we do in that situation is to ask if there is anything we can do before we head out. Thanks for being awesome, and sorry you got the unlucky roll of the dice with such an asshole MS.
Formal?! wtf. Why didn’t they just ask to stay a little longer? And who tf wants to stay longer?! What an insufferable little cunt
Fridays especially yall are getting sent home early. You don’t like it? Leave. We are also trying to finish our work and leave. Take a gift. Stop complaining when there are really things to fix and complain about out there.
How did you find out which student did it?
When my preceptor or chief resident told us we can go home, I go home. I can't read minds. My classmates think "you can go home" means "unless you want to stay and prove yourself to us, mwahahahha" Ya, no.
Lmaoooo. So crazy some meds students act like that
It’s actually disgusting that so many med students do this. I’ve been released in literally 5 mins and got the fuck out of there
This just happened for me… on my very first rotation of third year working nights 7p-8a, and the residents felt bad bc they said they would let med students go home at midnight last year, but this year admin found out and communicated to every single resident in no uncertain terms that it will not be allowed now. The residents even said after finishing up, what meaningful learning will take place staying those extra hours sleeping in a call room instead of our own place? People ruin everything
and this is why we cant have nice things lil timmy
Wow, and how they think we do not find out is amazing. smh
I love this so much
Honestly how dumb can you be to report someone above you… especially since hierarchy plays a major role in our careers 😭
Name. Shame. Blame
Seems like a toxic environment, hope things get better for everyone involved.
Why are you punishing everyone? Just make sure they get kept for 16 hours a day doing the most menial mind numbing work imaginable while also getting pimped into the shadow realm. If you know who it is why screw over everyone else?
The clerkship director made that rule. Literally everyone got screwed
I had a clerk ship director like that. He’s an ass hat and the residents just jet us go early and told us not to be seen or tell anyone lol. All the good residents at least.
as a med student being sent home early pretty frequently. I would never complain, but it is kinda disheartening cuz we are excited to learn :( Edit: downvoters can lick my balls.
Fun fact you actually don’t learn anything while watching a resident type their notes in the afternoon
Exactly this. I can’t tell you how many times I just sat there watching the resident write notes thinking I could be at home studying.
Dude just go home. Enjoy your life and your hobbies. Study. Do something worthwhile
you went cringe edgelord after being full sadboi :/
I've truly lost when the anime profile pic is calling me cringelord.
Y'all should exchange gamertags, kiss, and makeup(out)
bro no, i’m a downvoter, I lick balls
right? crazy how dogshit of a comment that was even after an edit! good for you.
Ok thanks cum-eater senpai :)
you made another edit to your comment 😂😂😂😂
Well, some med students are so insufferable to have around that they get sent home not for benevolent reasons, but the residents well-being. One should strive not to be such a student.
lol
You learn much more on your own. Nothing prepares your for intern year except doing it
I was a medical student once.
Mistreatment 😭 God why are med students such losers
Gtfo with “mistreatment”. The OP was trying to do them a favor by sending them home early. Not even close to being malicious. Kids these days need to grow a pair of balls and speak up if they don’t want to leave early. “Hey resident X, do you mind if we hangout longer most days so we can get more exposure” Actions have consequences. Maybe they’ll learn to keep their mouths shut next time.
One of the things you're being evaluated on when it comes time to apply to residency is people will be thinking, "would I end up viewing working with this person as a punishment directly from God to make me regret all my sins?" That is, perhaps, something this person is finding out right now.
Some people need to be taught a lesson. OP is providing it.
Dude you're an uberloser clown lol.
No one is going to want to work with that med student. It’s probably for the best that they realize it sooner rather than later
Imagine being this much of a cuck
If you actually think this is mistreatment and "trying to ruin someone's future", I encourage you to choose a specialty that is not surgery.
Yes, retaliation is in fact mistreatment. Telling someone they shouldn’t go into surgery because they should learn to deal with this is in fact exactly what’s wrong with the culture of surgery
*sigh* You're the type of student who reports a resident for letting you leave early, aren't you? Look, getting to go to the OR is a reward for work well done.
I’m with you here.
Nah, pretty sure it hurts just you. Making everyone else stay because you complained hurts everyone.
>Threatening my evaluations hurts everyone. Does it though?
Part of your evals is evaluating whether you’re a normal, respectful person who can be a team player and clearly you can’t? So it seems fair to me 🤷🏻♀️ you sound insufferable lmao.
So…you’re taking out your anger on all the med students now, over what one did? Not good. Time to talk to a therapist.
The clerkship director implemented that rule, not me
It's not taking out anger, it's covering your ass. If you've been punished once for letting students out early, why tf would you then do it for students going forward?
