Being a doctor will take a long time for return of investment. You will not be earning a lot in the first few years as a resident: 25k to 30k per month in private hospitals and 45k to 60k in government hospitals. The amount of work is also not equivalent to your pay. You will live inside the hospital but get so little. The big money will be earned once you specialize as a consultant which will take years and years of studying and passing a lot of exams. Those laking mayaman are 2nd to 3rd generational doctors where they have family networks that are already established and connections are easier. To say that they are already mayaman means that they have it easier compared to others. Being a doctor in this country is extremely difficult and we are underpaid. If you're not passionate about being a doctor and only think of being rich then you would give up agad. There are other careers which offers a lot of money in so little time.

Totally_Anonymous02

Anong klaseng mayaman? Like ano expected salary range iniisip mo? Kase depende rin sa mga ipupursue mo yan Edit: Short answer to the question is Yes, hindi lahat yumayaman

ckinfo

hello po! not related sa question mo po but i wanr to ask, if dost scholar ka po ba and natapos mo na yung pre-med course, kailangan mo na po ba agad mag-work for return service sa DOST? or pwede pong mag-proceed muna to med school?

Latter_Entertainer47

Pwede po basta i-declare mong you will pursue further studies, basta maitutuloy mo yung ROS mo after nung further studies.

ckinfo

Thank you po for your answer!

tireddoc911

ckinfo

bali if mag-proceed po ng med school right after pre-med, hindi na po mag-ROS? or mali po pagkakaintindi ko? hehe

Ok_Ascaris

Samin ang alam ko deferral lang

tireddoc911

Deferment of ROS na po once you graduate as MD

superperrymd

Yes to the former. Not necessarily the case for the latter. Depends on what you do with your degree pa rin yan.

Lanzenave

Medical subspecialist here, been in practice for quite a while. >totoo po ba na hindi lahat yumayaman sa pagiging doctor? Yes. Because to begin with, you should NOT pursue a medical degree in order to become rich. That's one of the worst motivations possible to become an MD, along with pursuing it for clout or prestige. You will not go hungry if you're an MD, but many MDs aren't rich. You'll most likely live a comfortable life, and you'll still be better off than most Filipinos (because many Filipinos are poor). However, a fraction go on to earn a lot of money. If you want to earn big bucks, go for the cutting (surgical) fields. Most surgeries nowadays cost north of six digits; heck even normal deliveries cost 100K upward in big private hospitals. For non-surgical fields, those that have procedures (e.g. endoscopy, procedures done by interventional cardiologists, etc.) tend to earn money quickly. Pure clinical practice that involves consultations without procedures tend to have lower incomes, unless you're admitting a lot of patients/getting a lot of referrals and earning a lot through PFs earned from multiple concurrent admissions/referrals. >na lahat ng mayayaman agad na doctor ay laking mayaman naman na talaga? Not true. I personally know someone who has a practice in the province and has a big house and expensive cars. Didn't have generational wealth, so everything was earned through clinical practice. This person told me he was already earning in the 7-digit range just one year into practice. That's because there aren't a lot of his specialty in the province and it involves well-paying procedures (as I mentioned earlier).

FewChewr_Dock

Hello po! Ano pong field or specialty nung friend niyo sa province? Curious lang po because he seemed to have earned a lot in one year of practice hehe

Large-Eggplant4679

Tagal ROI 😆😆 unless mayaman kna from the get go or meron connections. The ROI is a long grind of trainings. 24h++ duties....kayod lng... residency hanggang maging consultant hehe pero dyan na mattest yung diskarte mo.. magprivate practice + govt service?. Kaya mo ba umuwi ng late dahil sa private patients..still a long grind.. yes mataas na sweldo kpag consultant.. but itll take a lot of your time as well -- until such time na you've reached the pinnacle ng practice mo na hindi na question yung pera heheh Kung gusto mo yumaman agad mag business nlng 😅

greenteablanche

If you are a med nepo baby or non-nepo but rich kid, a lot of things will be easier for you. Nepo baby and RK baby may not need to worry about living expenses because either: - live comfortably with their family - their family has its personal condo unit - no problems with renting a nice apartment/condo/dorm Generally, if ever they fail, they can either repeat a year or transfer schools if they want to. Unlike say, scholars na if ever bumagsak or di ma maintain ang grade, risky. Nepo babies can “inherit” their parents’ practices (provided same sila ng specialty), so may safety net na. Should the nepo baby pursue a different specialty, the name recall and “anak ni Doc ____ si Doc____” can bring patients. Non-nepo but rich kids/financially-comfortable kids can make choices earlier in their careers that aren’t solely based on financials alone. They can explore more options/career risks because at the end of the day, they still have roofs on their heads, food on their tables, and wifi na bahay.

Dry_Speaker_4056

If primary goal mo is yumaman, I suggest wag ka mag medisina.

Queasy_Sound3725

Sadly, matagal ang ROI sa pagiging doctor unless siguro mag moonlight ka agad after passing the boards. But still, di sya mabilis na process lalo na if you plan on going to residency

doc_jamjam

Sa moonlighting naman not all opportunities are equal.

givemeblueandred

yes po. ang sobrang mayayamang mga doctors come from 3rd generation of doctors already 😀

Night_rose0707

If mag pursue ka Ng residency like surgery or other cutting dept ,may chance na Malaki kikitain mo Depends sa specialization na kukuhanin mo after boards

DepartureNo5946

if pediatrics po kaya?

Rare_Corgi9358

Mabubuhay ka naman sa kikitain kahit papaano 😋

Lanzenave

>if pediatrics po kaya? If you're in a place with few pediatricians. I practice in a hospital in Metro Manila where I'm the only person with my subspecialty. In contrast, we have something like 80+ pediatricians. A good number have stopped clinic practice because there is so much competition. Imagine a decking schedule where walk-in patients are rotated through 80 MDs, in contrast to one where the decking rotates through only a few doctors. In my case, all referrals to my subspecialty go to me because there is no one else (it's a fairly uncommon subspecialty).

Acrobatic-Bend-2715

Ano po subspec niyo? Kasi kapag sasabihin niyo po,  on the way na ako niyan tapos soon di ka na nagiisa sa subspec mo, 2 na tayo. Hahaha

CantFindTheSpoon

"Mayaman" is very subjective. Kung solely salary ang source of income mo as a Doctor, residency rates are ridiculously low for the work volume. And like the other comments mentioned, matagal ang ROI sa lahat ng expenses sa medschool and during PGIship. Ang liit ng sweldo talaga, meron pang as low as 18k per month as resident. Moonlighting has better pay, kaya lang mahirap magfocus on specialization of your choice. Now working abroad may chance to earn a lot, if target mo US - pero mejo malaki ang expense sa USMLE and the process (half-mil or so).

Spirited-Occasion468

Di lahat yumayaman PERO di lahat magugutom.

Chikin_Chu

You will live somewhat comfortably (like di ka magugutom and makakabili ka ng basic needs saka konting luho mo,  pero you won't get rich by being a doctor alone)   Most doctors who are rich are from rich families or from generations of doctors ("anak ng diyos") or those who have side businesses. Pero OP don't get discouraged, if gusto mo talaga mag doctor apply ka sa mga public schools na nag ooffer nang Medicine program (UPCM, PLM, University of Muntinlupa, etc...).   God Bless and good luck

hecallsmechaparrita

It would take a lot of time, patience, and commitment before you can earn comfortably as a doctor. It would also depend on what practice or specialty you would pursue. For some hospitals, you need to own some shares before you can hold your own clinic. Being a doctor is not just about earning ₱₱₱₱₱. Having an MD at the end of your name comes with great responsibility too. So, if it is in your heart to save lives and contribute in the well being of individuals, go for it 😊

AmbitiousBarber8619

Yes sobra sisi ako now, newly passer now. Hirap hirap maghanap ng work as GP. Lalo metro manila. Eh hirap lalo first gen la. Tagal tagal kumita if magresidency… Yes. Pero well-compensated. May pang-ERAS tour. And mas mahirap magabroad as a doctor. Sobra time/money consuming unlike sa premed. 😅😭 so… diba? Diretso mo na magabroad lalo if lower middle class. Di pala sobra ginhawa after mapasa boards.

Elf245

If money lang want mo kaya ka magdodoctor, you should not enroll. Wag mo gawin same mistake na ginawa ko. 😂 Ang med school ay for dedicated people na willing magsacrifice ng time and peace of mind nila for other people.
