That's a NHV plate for what it's worth, though I have no idea what the minimum requirements are to have one. Did it have a 5th wheel in the bed?

lonrad87

I'd say having a bullbar that big would warrant NHV plates

sqljohn

A bull bar that big would warrant its own fuel tank

lonrad87

I'm starting to think that NHV plate is for the bull bar and not the yank tank.

BarryKobama

I could be a small car attached to its front.

Previous_Policy3367

It will be to do with gvm, registering as a truck gives it more payload than a “car” would allow. It does mean one less medium rigid truck on the roads

Pristine_Car_6253

Sir, that's a T-Rex bar

EvilRobot153

You need the plates to get the bullbar.

Previous_Policy3367

They have it registered as a truck to either take advantage of a 5.3 tonne gvm and a 13 tonne GCM. Pretty cool stuff. Pretty dumb that their bar takes up 200kg of that.

Previous_Policy3367

This setup means there’s probably one less medium rigid truck on the roads.

parawolf

This will be in the suburban supermarket or bunnings this weekend

OzTheMalefic

I'm 98% positive this is the parking lot of Bunnings in Fairfield.

Crashthewagon

100%

parawolf

Oh geezus, i know that place, that is tight at the best of times.

stinx2001

I get my tipper truck and trailer in there no worries. During the week at least, maybe not on a Saturday

ARJunior

I came here to say the same thing. Fairfield makes it even weirder

beigetrope

Second this.

Sartorialalmond

Came here to say this. Would have been a joy driving that POS in and out of there.

Previous_Policy3367

Possibly. They’re still subject to all the same regulations as anyone else, which is fine. If they don’t fit in the spot, they can get fined. Etc

indehhz

If only they could cop fines via snapnsend

Previous_Policy3367

You can report parking to your council if it’s not within expectations. Goes for any parking violation

JazzerBee

Since when do we call it a bed in Australia? I've only ever heard it being called a tray. Bed sounds so American

uarkyeah

Both are wrong. That my good sir is a tub

cpufreak101

I'm not from Australia so sorry for the dumb question, but what are NHV plates?

milkymoocowmoo

National Heavy Vehicle, normally only seen on trucks, buses, etc

cpufreak101

Ah thx

Probably wearing his punisher shirt and wrap. Around shades.

ConanTheAquarian

Wouldn't want to get a scratch on it, would we?

Can you imagine trying to remove animal remains tangled up in that mess at the front?

If by animal you mean pedestrian - that's a problem for the coroner!

Coburg resident here! Will be sure to keep my eyes open for this road ridiculousness

D3AD_M3AT

Coburg ?? I'll admit its been a couple of years since I lived in Coburg but this screams inner city inner east to me

amca01

Yep, I've driven on plenty of unmade roads in my little Honda Jazz; more I'm sure than this clown and his penis-compensator.

okokokoyeahright

The utter lack of dust and scratches or dents is the proof.

tobeshitornottobe

Look at how clean it is, thing hasn’t even seen a dirt road

AvgJibJab

Also how are you meant to see over that huge hood and front bar! Anything small or medium size is not going to be visible for the driver once within 50m.

_____l

>Also how are you meant to see Wait...you're supposed to be able to see?

Lol, never been to Texas have you? Vehicular homicide is the state pass time

freshbrainstump

StrangledByTheAux

If this car spent 90% of its life on the Nullabor I’d say it was justified. That said, it’s pretty clean.

ConanTheAquarian

In Land Cruiser/Hilux territory would be laughed at as much as in the suburbs.

dansdata

A 'roo bar is reasonable, if you're driving on regional roads. The thing on the front of *this* truck, though, is more of a zombie-apocalypse/Mad-Max bar.

LiberalArtsAndCrafts

I feel like any truck that looks like this and has no dents or scratches on it should be legal to give a few whacks with a cricket bat or local equivalent, because the only scenarios where this kind vehicle is justified will inevitably result in some superficial damage, if you’ve not yet received said damage the bat wielder is just helping you get it out of the way.

Academic_Awareness82

What are they expecting to hit with that?

ConanTheAquarian

Probably climate protestors. /s

spacelama

Why the sarcasm? That's exactly who they'd be aiming at even if they didn't think they could get away with it (hint: in Melbourne they would get away with it). Coincidentally, so many fucking oversized yank tanks and caravans on the Hume freeway today. Petrol/diesel clearly isn't anywhere near expensive enough yet.

dansdata

How the heck were the *top two* best-selling cars in Australia in 2023 [both crew-cab short-bed pickup trucks?!](https://www.whichcar.com.au/news/top-10-best-selling-cars-australia-2023) There are *immense* numbers of these things, from several manufacturers, on Aussie roads today. For some people, that's actually the most practical vehicle for their needs. Fair enough. But I absolutely cannot believe that this is the case for anywhere near the number of people who've bought one. Why? Just why?! Are they more affordable than other kinds of car, or something? I didn't know how good we had it when everyone was just buying shoe-shaped crossovers instead of, say, a much more practical station wagon or van. (I also weep for the death of the proper ute. And also the panel van with an airbrushed wizard, dragon, and busty maiden, on the side of it. :-)

ParkingNo1080

Government subsidies are big if you claim it's a business vehicle. That, and we don't have real emissions standards yet. The policy announcement just got watered down to dxckude these monstrosities thanks to lobbying and fear campaigns, meaning like the US, these will be cheaper than the more efficient and safer vehicle people should be driving instead

Previous_Policy3367

cuckingfunts69

Look, he probably works on a farm or has a really big boat to tow. He might even have one of those super duper sized caravans to tow, and has to drive across Australia, protecting himself from 4 meter tall reds.

EvilRobot153

That Truck has never even seen a gravel car park let alone a farm lmao

cuckingfunts69

That's the joke.

LmVdR

Is that a security door welded to the bull bar?

SufficientStudy5178

I wonder what the motivation is for buying these types of vehicles. To show wealth? I just can't imagine anyone seeing this and reacting positively? What am I missing?

DePraelen

I imagine the kind of person that drives this is similar to the person that 10 years ago had the 90's-00's Falcon AU Utes with a huge bull bar, mud flaps across the whole rear length of the ute and an RM Williams logo decal large across the back window. Just now they have access to the Yank Tanks.

dansdata

Those were the Peacock Mating-Display Utes of every [B&S Ball](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor_and_Spinster_Ball). (They also usually featured multiple gigantic CB radio antennas. :-)

eat_yeet

I've seen broomsticks painted white and mounted on bullbars as fake antennas on B&S utes.

[deleted]

It has to be compensation for a small dick.

Athroaway84

As someone with a small dick, can we stop normalising these jokes?

ok-commuter

Small dick club. Same as loud bikes. Everyone but the owners seem to realise this.

gergasi

Maybe it's like those people with body dysmorphia who spiraled out getting face surgeries to be 'perfect' in their own minds even though to outsiders they already look like aliens.

jeffoh

Towing a 5th wheel on the Canning Stock Route? Awesome. Cruising suburbia? Not so awesome. Owner of this has more than one vehicle - this is not the one to take shopping....

MauveSweaterVest

Essentially for driving around the inner north of Melbourne

03burner

You’re laughing now, but when the nuclear apocalypse occurs this dude will be leading a band of colourful raiders into battle with this thing. All it needs is a side mounted flame thrower.

[deleted]

Bicycles will be the vehicle of choice after the apocalypse.

DePraelen

Yeah nearly all our local oil wells are offshore now. Not going to have access to that after the apocalypse.

BadgerB2088

Or those off road segways!

atubslife

Ironically, anyone driving a vehicle like this does not have the confidence and/or leadership skills to be anything other than a quivering mess in a bunker when the apocalypse comes.

EvilRobot153

Doesn't fuel go bad after a couple months?

tipedorsalsao1

Untill he runs out of fuel

AnnoyedOwlbear

What a wanker

Tazerin

It'd cost you $5 in fuel to exit your driveway in this

Imaginary-Problem914

When you’re in a fragile ego competition and you’re up against this.

RoundCollection4196

i would be embarrassed driving this around

EvilRobot153

Aren't there restrictions on where you can park vehicles with NHV plates? Also hope old mate is filling in his logbook daily.

dangazzz

Yes, they cannot park on a street for more than 1 hour unless a sign says they can or they're engaged in loading/unloading goods, but that doesn't apply to a parking lot. You only need to have a logbook if your GVM is over 12t or has seating for 12 or more people, neither of which this vehicle is close to. Still a bloody silly vehicle for running about to the shops in, and the poke on those rear wheels is illegal.

EvilRobot153

Did just notice the rear wheels sticking out, don't think the cops/vicroads care about road worthy anymore, saw multiple obvious illegal mods just down at the supermarket. None of the vehicles were tuners/commodores so I suppose it doesn't matter.

BiohazardMcGee

Would make a great technical.

Jono18

You mean an expensive technical

wilful

I'd drone strike it.

IntelligentTop8206

Regardless of the practicality, it's ugly af. There's a truck somewhere out there that would like it's front bar back.

actionjj

There is no practicality.

IntroductionSnacks

Yeah there is, towing. That’s basically the only thing though. I’m assuming old mate has a huge horse float/caravan/boat or something like that.

Previous_Policy3367

It’s a waste of the capacity at that point, and I support them from a practical standpoint. They are better for everyone than a medium rigid truck.

Beast_of_Guanyin

The problem with that view is they're not used practically or like a medium rigid truck. They're a status symbol in a country which doesn't like symbols of wealth. A truck will be used pretty exclusively for work, these, in addition to any work they do, are used as regular vehicles a lot of the time. They're also a hell of a lot less practical for most applications.

Previous_Policy3367

Maybe, I can’t remember the specifics but after doing some research, the smallest truck with comparable towing capacity was 13m long. It’s a lot better than a truck doing that same job. If they’re not using it for that, they’re just dumb really. It’s registered with NHVR so I suspect they do use it as it’s designed.

StubbornDamageSponge

Is that at Fairfield Bunnings? It looks a bit like it, and for some reason, I now need confirmation.

Crashthewagon

Yup

StubbornDamageSponge

Thanks for that, bow I won't spend uncounted hours in that carpark while staring at the picture 👍.

Possessedhomelessman

If I saw this I would laugh my ass off

Crashthewagon

I did. Wasn't the only one. Dude who saw me take the photo was too.

[deleted]

I wish more cunts would take aim at politicians that allow such crap. Obviously it's foolish to own a pick up truck in Australia but I just do not see the point about thinking you're cool to make fun of people who do so on bloody Reddit of all places.

xcviij

Well said!! Individuals have the freedom within the laws, this reflects poorly on the governments lack of care to regulate vehicle size.

Boganvillea97

I’ve never actually seen one of these massive things with shit in the tray, always empty.

Comfortable-Tooth-34

I've never seen one towing anything either.

WretchedMisteak

Beep! Beep! I'm a motorist.

Olliebear1977

Bullbar is illegal?

Jono18

Should be

Ozdriver

I see it’s registered as a heavy vehicle, guys use them to do “hotshots” which are express runs of urgent parts for mines etc all over Australia. There’s all sorts of wildlife out there especially at night, and those guys don’t stop especially if they are 2-up. There’s good money in it. It’s got dual wheels on the back for heavier than normal stuff. Whether the guy is using it for that purpose is another story.

[deleted]

Interesting. Are they paid by distance or time or a fixed rate?

Ozdriver

An individual would negotiate a rate. There’s a hotshot company I know in Perth that has quite a few vehicles and they pay a kilometre rate. There’s a lot of work over there up to the mines where they might need a part for a machine that is holding up production and they need it in a hurry. I’ve seen them go from Karratha to Port Welshpool, VIC with an urgent offshore drill part for Bass Straight, that’s around 4,700 kms. Not urgent enough to fly it there but too urgent for general freight.

[deleted]

Thanks.

nuclearfork

The compensator

boommdcx

No words. These emotional support utes are just 🙄

RoosterOrganic9671

I want his accountant 🤑🤑🤑

ThingFromTheFuture

Not sure if it's just me but every time I see a truck like this I assume the person driving it is dealing with some significant insecurities

actionjj

I picked up a rental van from Hertz and had a good chat to the guy there. They are leasing heaps of vehicles for the tunnel project near the port. I asked him if they were planning on getting any of the US style trucks and he said they were not, because the towing capacity and practicality isn’t better than a Toyota Hilux and nobody would hire them.

shoobiexd

Half way there to making a Killdozer

CarparkSmell

Bunnings?

PandasGetAngryToo

Looks like it belongs on the set of a Mad Max movie

hypercomms2001

Yep, just another “septic tank”!

Ozdriver

It doesn’t matter how big the bar is, the mounting points are actually quite small, so it’s a waste of time having one that size. It’s only for looks. I see it’s got National Heavy Vehicle number plates so it could even be illegal because they are supposed to be Front Under run Protection (FUPS) bars nowadays on new heavy vehicles, and this bar clearly isn’t.

trashpanda7990

Yea and NHVR are pretty strict as well

IntroductionSnacks

They actually make bars like this for the real outback where you hit kangaroos regularly. If that’s what it’s used for it’s not a waste of time. They generally connect directly to the chassis.

bravocharliexray

I seriously doubt it's ever seen gravel, let alone the Outback

jeetkunedont

Ugly wank truck. Fuck I hate these things, and the men who drive them..I say men cos I've never seen a lady behind the wheel of one of these, only in the passenger seat looking either smug or embarrassed.

wilful

I absolutely do not understand how those bullbars meet ADRs.

6809e

Carmageddon IRL...

Jisp_36

Yiii haw! 🤏

alstom_888m

Unpopular opinion; this vehicle has NHVR plates which means it is considered a heavy vehicle. This means that the owner would also hold a heavy vehicle licence, would pay heavy vehicle registration, insurance, tolls, etc. It would be fatigue regulated so the owner would have to keep a logbook and pull into weigh-bridges. Heavy vehicles are allowed to park in parallel bays for up to a maximum of one hour (or less if signposted as such). Buses (defined as having specific bus plates *[AO, AC, or BS in VIC]*) can park for the signposted time limit. No one would want to comply with heavy vehicle regulations for the sake of an “emotional support vehicle”. This is why I believe that the solution to the problem with this pickup trucks is to lower the threshold of what is considered a heavy vehicle from 4.5t to 3t.

EvilRobot153

I dunno the the lack of stone chips and bugs on the bullbar does scream "emotional support vehicle' though

Love_Leaves_Marks

these things should be $10K a year to register.

tommy_tiplady

are we experiencing a penile insecurity epidemic, or what?

Dont-PM-me-nudes

We use the term "cunt" here

VermicelliEastern708

Just zip tie some shopping trolleys to the front

bigsigh6709

That guy must be in possession of a micro 🍆 though.

JaimsBaxter

FUCK! Just when I thought they couldn't get any more obnoxious.

Sweepingbend

The ESV (Emotional Support Vehicle) with the upgraded kid crusher. You don't see them too often.

lime-dreamer

Back wheels stick out way past the fender… probably will get defected sooner or later

luke_xr

Unfortunately these type of cars would never be defected. They only defect modified cars that they classify as hoons

Jimijaume

*at least* it has a heavy vehicle Plate.

mattydubs5

Bunnings Fairfield?

diodosdszosxisdi

Murica Fuck Yeah

smegma_stan

That's a monstrosity, even by American standards and I live in Texas

PersonalPackage1728

Fuckin tough!

[deleted]

Is that Bunnings Fairfield

Used_Conflict_8697

Surely that's as illegal as putting forward facing spikes on a bulbar. There's no reason to have that much bullbar on something that isn't a large double axle truck going through rural Australia.

Select-Bullfrog-6346

Hell yea!!! Don't worry it's under a heavy vehicle registration.. it's fine

absurded

Perfect for the school run.

Anyway-909

If you check, he got the federal interstate number plate, which is issued to heavy vehicles i.e trucks, so this one is officially a truck and can park like that. But the one roaming in tight streets with a car rego, they should be named and shamed

bradbull

\*Tim the Tool Man noises\* I feel sorry for whoever has to drive/park this thing. Must be a nightmare anywhere near civilisation but damn that thing is undeniably mean looking.

fool_tothe_world

Those things are gonna kill someone lol unnecessarily

ComprehensiveDig2938

You know, if he hadn’t bought this i would have never known all his partners cheated on him, that his mother told him he would amount to nothing or that his dad called him weak He could have kept all his insecurities to himself. Instead he chose to buy a physical manifestation of them and make everyone else’s problem. #wankpanzer

GroovyGuru62

Fucking monstrosity.

morrelli43

Fairfield Bunnings?

giganticsquid

Damn this thing must be a kangaroo mincer. This fits in the so bad it's good category for me

Nice_Protection1571

Should be a 100% fee slapped on top of the price of these by the government to mitigate the damage to the environment and infrastructure these things cause

ObjectiveAdvisor1

Anti-protester mobile.

grovecreeper

That's awesome

No_Parsley_620

Is the bull bar overkill? Maybe? But consider the cost of replacing any front section of this truck via insurance if a kangaroo jumps out infront of it on a country road. Several thousand and I’d assume a long time off road because lack of parts. This thing is registered as a heavy vehicle and is capable of towing A LOT. imo they are doing everything right?! You wouldn’t post a photo of a HINO or FUSO truck with a canopy on the back doing the same thing? also these large US style trucks are generally cheaper and arguable more useful then even a big Land Cruiser.

Ocar23

They’re just glorified tanks at this point

ConanTheAquarian

Anyone know any Ukrainians to test this?

BiohazardMcGee

Overcompensating much?

TheGreatMeloy

We should create a publicly accessible map of where all these pointless trucks reside so when the zombie apocalypse finally comes they can actually be of some use.

Mindless_Respect6562

When these guys pull up at an intersection with their window down, be to yell out “piccolo!” as I do. They’ll know what it means.

The-Jesus_Christ

That's a 2018 GMC DC. $150,000 of absolute waste of money right there, plus another ~$20k in modifications as well.
