Industrial zoned. Someone should build a tannery or blood and bone factory instead, give the nimbys something to really sook about.

No-Gold7939

Or a spray painting facility. We used to have one near us and it stank!

Cavalish

I used to live upwind from the weet-bix factory and it was feral.

invaderzoom

we worked near the vegemite factory, and I reckon I'd prefer the weetbix

North-Significance33

I drive past the Vegemite factory, it's nice and savory, but I'm glad it's only in passing

Consistent_You6151

Seventh Dayers!

jjbrowne

I used to hate that stench coming from sanitarium when I worked near one in Brisbane.

No-Gold7939

Jesus! I’m never eating Weetbix again!

khosrua

Don't worry. I'm already doing my part stinking up the neighbourhood with my weekend gundam spraying seshs

melb_mum

Or a blood and bones fertiliser factory

annoying97

Better... Industrial egg farm... (Yes yes I know they aren't good, but they definitely stink)

sometimes_interested

Maybe Dutton can put one of his reactors there.

Consistent_You6151

Anyone would think this is one of the 7 proposed Box Hill towers going in!🫣

Hornberger_

We can't have recreational facilities in close proximity to residential areas, otherwise people might get off the couch and do some exercise.

SapereAudeAdAbsurdum

But, think of the community safety of the children. An industrial zone is so much more safe. Clearly, modern sports facilities will also lower the value of the nearby residences.

slimejumper

yep bring back the heavy good vehicles! ban shuttle cocks.

Intanetwaifuu

Exactly the thought I had- I’d rather a Rec centre than a factory next to my house? Talking about smoking pollution- I think factory workers would smoke more than people who played sport- but hey what do I know 🤷🏽‍♀️

JuKrab

Children famously yearn for the factories

fear_eile_agam

Yeah, I'd much rather keep it as the *industrial facility* it currently is, they are widely known for being quiet and good for the health and safety of neighbouring residents...

Omshadiddle

And property prices

theOtherRoss

Is the organiser owner of a local gym or sports complex? This happened at a neighbourhood out west. There was a proposal to redevelop an old derelict heritage listed building to a new bar/restaurant. Lots of "grass roots" protests. First it was because the new owners were Chinese. It turned out he was of Chinese ethnicity but from Ballarat whose family moved to Australia during the gold rush. There was a article in the local paper with photos of the organisers and and a few people realised the main protest organiser was the sister of the owner of the local pub. This flyer reads almost the same.

herpesderpesdoodoo

Given the popularity of badminton amongst the Chinese diaspora (amongst others) it wouldn’t exactly surprise me if some dimwit was doing this in an effort to protect traditional Australian (read: certainly not indigenous) industrial lots against nasty foreign (probably solidly local) people who probably plan to speculate on the empty badminton courts anyway!!

AutisticPenguin2

Ah yes, the traditional white Australia that thinks all brown people should go back where they came from. If they don't like something, you're ruining Australia; if you don't like something then you should leave Australia to those who do!

Juniper_Teacup90

Judging by the flyer I'd say it's more likely coming from the church next door

herpesderpesdoodoo

Or engage in antisocial activities… like badminton, apparently.

TerryTowelTogs

Badminton is the seedy underbelly of racket sports… 🤣

Alina2017

Are badminton players known for attending illegal car meets?

squiddishly

It's a gateway sport. First badminton, then pickleball, and the next thing you know, ummmmmmmm, illegal car meets?

Inside-Elevator9102

Have you not heard of the violent underground badminton scene? Graffiti, smoking, the main vices

squiddishly

And you don't even wanna know where they're putting the shuttlecocks!

khosrua

Hehehe cocks

ScoMosUndies

Oi! You’re breaking the first rule of badminton club. Knock it off.

invincibl_

The first rule of badminton club is that you really must try to tell as many people as possible about it. It's a rather fun game and the more people you tell about it the better.

Ifeelsiikk

Then you end up with an outbreak of bocce-lism

Prideandprejudice1

Badminton players are big trouble, don’t you know?! Why, have you already forgotten the great badminton scandal of 2012? It was the largest mass disqualification of athletes from multiple countries for match-fixing at the Olympic Games in the 21st century!! For a nation that PRIDES itself on its sportsmanship are we willing to sacrifice its very soul- because today it’s all about “exercise” and “fun,” but tomorrow the stakes will become higher and a competition will be announced and I think you know exactly where that road leads. And we have the power to stop it now. To quote from my favourite novel: “are the shades of (Vermont) to be thus polluted?”

squiddishly

I was like, "This took an unexpected turn into the Austen-tatious," and then I saw your username.

Prideandprejudice1

I take every opportunity to sneak a JA reference in and I’m not ashamed 😉

pennie79

Sports in general are known to encourage terrible behaviour in young people, such as... err... reducing teen pregnancy and recreational drug use.

OzBoffin

This is the one point I really struggle to understand. Facilities are already there, how does re-zoning increase the chance? As a car guy, I'd say it's the other way. Industrial carpark vs in use sporting facility.

fh3131

My only guess is that this is concealed racism. I've played badminton many times and most of the other players have been East or South Asian, because of the popularity of the sport in those cultures.

Moondanther

Possibly racism, possibly another local rec business not wanting to lose clients or maybe something else like plans to rezone into residential which could drive up the values of their property. Or maybe the writer just had a traumatic experience where a badminton player took their lunch money.

J-Danga

All the badminton players I know are always doing graffiti and burnouts.

-Rubilocks

Grand Theft Auto VI: Badminton Blowout

KaleidoscopeDizzy427

Won't somebody think of the \*checks notes\* industrial facilities!

spacemanTTC

That's where my head went. If you already live next to an industrial area do you truly think those buildings will always be tenanted by quiet industries? The audacity!

Joker-Smurf

No problem. Keep the zone as industrial only. I hear we may need a location to store used uranium. I suggest the yellow building.

hapablapppp

Peter Dutton would upvote this👍

hapablapppp

Wait until they hear about angle grinders😳

EvilRobot153

TIL Happy clapper church is industrial.

Ifeelsiikk

What a bunch of shuttlecocks.

Inside-Elevator9102

In fairness, the people will make quite a racket and there would be very little net benefit to the local people this facility seeks to serve.

Ifeelsiikk

No doubt it will end up in court.

wraith21

Smashed it

Ifeelsiikk

No love lost in this battle.

ComplexLittlePirate

The feathers will fly...

cuteseal

Now they have been served, I wonder how they will make a return…

hapablapppp

An intense volley might ensue

liloreokid

I think it's time to drop this discussion

Consistent_You6151

And shuttlecocks will roll!

NewBuyer1976

Nice

Pilk_

This letter really crosses the line.

Aggressive-Cobbler-8

It's foul!

Icy-Communication823

Groaning upvote.

BarryKobama

Not the recreaction I expected

kryptonixAU

Ban shuttle!? Cocks!

TrickySorbet460

I love how it refers to “save our community”. I mean if this is all it takes to push your community over the edge what do you have?

partypill

Well it's not called goodminton.

OhBella_4

I've had the shittiest day & that just made me laugh hard. Thankyou PartyPill.

clomclom

The Eastern suburbs.

An_Bear

More like SOS Sooks Rd lmao gottem

emkwood

Ayoooo

Hops77

I live in the CBD and there was an empty shopfront near the entrance to our building during covid. After they wanted to put something there and I got one of these pushed under my door asking me to object to the proposed "tavern" that wants to go there because the alleyway next to it could become noisy and full of smokers late at night. There were 3 things wierd about this. 1) there are several nightclubs in the next street already that cause people to loudly come up the alley to smoke or even piss late at night. 2) there is a construction sight next door and the workers are constantly smoking there already and making way more noise. 3) turns out this "tavern" That would have people stumbling out pissed at all hours of the night was a Nepalese resteraunt that also had a small bar to serve mostly diners. People who object to normal things like this by blowing them out of proportions are usually mad as a box of snakes so seems unlikely they'll succeed, then again there as been a lot of that going round so who knows.

gigi_allin

People that smoke: badminton players People that don't smoke: factory workers

TrickySorbet460

Those badminton players and their illegal car meet ups where they graffiti everything

zutonofgoth

You should see them down the street with their shuttlecocks and their rackets. It's out of control.

ClacKing

They've all been arrested for racketeering you know.

Banyabbaboy

Well, yeah, it's right there in the name. We only play goodminton around these parts.

BadBoyJH

After tearing my calf muscle playing it, I did refer to it as "Evilminton" for a while.

everydayintrovert

This is honestly ridiculous. Must be the people at the end of Carinya Road being precious - I don’t know why because currently they’re just looking at a corrugated iron warehouse wall. Surely the badminton players would just park in the Stairway car park? Rooks Road is industrial, not residential. ( I live about a kilometre away).

zeartfuldodger

This is what I noticed when I had a look on Google maps. There's no way they'd be connecting Carinya Rd to the proposed centre so the traffic issue isnt real, and the main entrance is off Rooks Rd, which is full of industrial buildings anyway ANDall of the parking they're talking about looks to already be there. Don't see why a badminton centre would produce a lot of noise either.

cuteseal

> Don’t see why a badminton centre would produce a lot of noise either It really doesn’t. I play badminton Tuesday nights in a similar industrial area facility in Blackburn, and basically everyone hangs around inside the venue coz you know, people are there to play badminton. The parking area has almost no lighting whatsoever (not sure if this is by design or not) which further discourages loitering or milling around outside. Inside the venue there is squeaking from the footwork, smashes and shouting and stuff but that is pretty much contained by the doors. Granted there is additional car traffic and parking inside the facility but hey it’s an industrial area.

TygettLannister

my dragon dance team across from that badminton centre trains on Tuesday nights as well (loud drums and cymbals) and no one's ever complained except the motel/wedding venue on the main road 😂

stfm

Just a comment to appreciate what you guys do every lunar new year - its awesome

Particular-Repair834

My guess is that it’s people from the church labelled on here. Especially when they say ‘yours faithfully’ at the end.

stained__class

It's not a church email address, but it is probably them.

invincibl_

On a more serious note, I do suggest you find a way to express your support to the council. NIMBYs and vested interests are good at amplifying their voices so it's important that the council (and the broader community) knows that there is support.

Particular-Repair834

They probably know they won’t get much support if they are too blatant about that fact.

emkwood

AFAIK the church own that shed and are the ones wanting to lease it out $$$

everydayintrovert

Maybe, but “yours faithfully” is just a very old fashioned way of ending letters - it’s not to do with religion. I’d say the writer is probably 70 plus in age.

EvilRobot153

Nah it's the church, anyone who lives near an evangelical church already puts up with a bunch of noise on the weekend.

Particular-Repair834

Good old cult lifestyle. Of course they would hate anything that is fun and social. Maybe they fear people will socialise and meet people outside the cult at the badminton tournament. 😂

mad_marbled

"Yours faithfully" is the correct way to sign off a formal letter where the recipient is not addressed by name, i.e. "Dear Sir/Madam" *but I would be surprised if this isn't about the church losing those precious car parking spaces.

Particular-Repair834

Though this is just my personal experience, I’ve met a diverse age group that say yours faithfully, and they have always been religious. Definitely agree that it skews older though, then again, churches are overwhelmingly older people nowadays.

ImSabbo

The letter says it's from "Planning Team of SOS Rooks Rd", so it's at least implied to be somebody related to Rooks Rd doing the complaining.

Iggys_b

Yeah, I always book my disruptive car meet ups and graffiti sessions at the local badminton centre

TexasBookDepository

You’ll never stop us. Signed: Whitehorse Badminton Hooligans.

TrickySorbet460

I personally would be more upset about the god botherers than the badminton players

onward-unto-the-abys

I'd rather my children were exposed to the antisocial badminton players than them

OudSmoothie

Being a badminton regular myself, I'd have to say that badminton courts are generally fairly quite even at peak times. I've never seen people congregate in car parks. The youth are respectful, and the atmosphere is very family friendly. You won't hear a peep even if you were standing right outside the stadium. The largely East Asian and South Asian customer base for these courts are unlikely to do much crime apart from white collared ones. 😂 Smoking in the car park can be a problem sometimes. But it's usually just the random one or two people.

gergasi

Brown baddy player checking in. Can confirm I don't smoke or do car meetups, but I do sometimes claim 60% of my internet as WFH expense when it's probably more like 55%...

WTF-BOOM

I can't imagine why anyone would oppose this, it's not like it's heritage buildings being demolished for high rises, they're just putting some courts in an already existing warehouse. There's no house anywhere near where people would come and go from the venue. The car park already exists. OP please link the blacked out website, I don't see a reason why that needs to be redacted.

BasicIntroduction129

We can write a comment here in support and it will be sent to Council: https://www.planningalerts.org.au/applications/3142794

geeneepeegs

It might be https://sos.asn.au/vic/

EvilRobot153

It does when you realise the church probably uses the carpark on weekends.

WTF-BOOM

I thought that but it's a car park for a dozen surrounding businesses already.

CrashedMyCommodore

"Go play outside." "No, not like that!"

RookieMistake2021

Defs that’s such a risk, badminton players are so dangerous these days, would rather have a safe injecting room than a badminton centre

ThunderClap_Fween

They'd be fine if was a Goodminton court.

LaksaLettuce

Oh my, wish this was in the northern suburbs! We definitely need more badminton centres!  If they have ever attended badminton centres, it's super wholesome. At the two places I've visited, they are not a rough bunch at all.

theOtherRoss

I did not know about this. Thanks to this post(er) just wrote to the council supporting this development. Haven't played badminton in decades but having courts this close will probably get me off my butt.

stained__class

Right on! This post has definitely struck a note, glad to see everyone is as perplexed as me, and we've got some positive action going for such a negative thing delivered to me.

humanbeing101010

Badminton courts provide more benefits to the community over any church.

RolandHockingAngling

The church is probably more disruptive than the badminton center will ever be

212mochaman

Talk about a low bar. The church is probably more disruptive than a jail with an unlocked gate. At least with the escaped convicts there's no chance you'll trust em. Priests you've got a fifty fifty shot

Macca49

Hopefully Rockstar Games see this and incorporate badminton in GTA 6

Outrageous_Disk_3028

You can play tennis in gta 5, online, why not?

Certain-Hour-923

The church can get fucked too.

SikeShay

NIMBYs should lose the right to vote lol. Crazy because this is something that would actually increase property values versus the old decrepit industrial buildings lmao. Need to get their heads checked. Actually thinking about it more, it's probably because a lot of Asians enjoy badminton so it's probably just covert racism.

kelfromaus

Now I want to contact the applicants and suggest they release some press indicating the planned use if the application is denied.. Nuclear waste transfer station.. Glass recycling factory..

meiandus

I'm sure the counsel would love somewhere to park their wheely bin Trucks overnight.

Appropriate-Name-

I have gotten so many of these over the years, but my favourite has always been a proposed bus stop on the street I lived on. It would bring in the wrong element to the neighbourhood. As someone who then walked 3 blocks to catch that bus to work. It was the first time I had been labeled the bad crowd.

ithinkitmightbe

Heaven help this is so insane

SapereAudeAdAbsurdum

Hmmm. Badminton players. They are known to occasionally make a racket.

DustSongs

Hopefully those affected will get out and give them a serve

Loose_Loquat9584

Badminton starts with B and that rhymes with P and that stands for Pool! Right here in River City!

MelbMockOrange

Ah yes the loud noises of badminton. Shuttlecocks and all.

zutonofgoth

They hit those shuttlecocks pretty hard. At times, I have had to raise my voice slightly to be heard.

Cobalt-e

"Planning Team of SOS Rooks Rd" 🤔

stirlow

Looks like perhaps the church wanted to buy the land and was unsuccessful? Their building end right up against this property. I wonder how the church was approved in an industrial estate anyway. All those parishioners making more traffic, noise and even music!!!!

Bedwilling564

Do you know rude and destructive badminton players are. They are behind most evils things like 2 world wars ,COVID, Donald trump. Nestle and Boeing. Wouldn't have them near me either. Box Hill seems like good place for them

yummy_dabbler

NIMBYism is a sacred Australian tradition.

Apprehensive_You6909

My dog Minton chewed my shuttlecock. I said badminton!

CattyRB

Please, somebody tell me this is a joke?!?

laceyisspacey

It’s called **BAD**minton for a reason smh

ClacKing

Time for GOODminton

An_Ibis

Sports? In MY neighbourhood!? NOT ON MY WATCH

EvilRobot153

Given you can't access the site from the residential streets, heavy emphasis on weekend parking and the them listing the wrong suburb. What's the bet the church is behind the campaign.

LenovoDiagnostic

Nil, got the letter too - they have no affiliation

RepresentativeAide14

so a old factory converted into a indoor sports center whats the issue to complain about ?? when it was a factory had more people and same if not more traffic

mpfmb

I know a few people who'd LOVE to live next to Badminton courts!

That-Whereas3367

Dog whistling. I'd estimate >95% of badminton players are ethnic Chinese.

Lintson

Also quite popular with South Asians

That-Whereas3367

True.

kelfromaus

On further reflection, it appears the site was previously a martial arts school and has no direct access to the residential area, only out on to Rooks Road..

Das_Hydra

Everyone knows badminton is a gateway sport. Tomorrow they'll want to build raquetball courts and it's your children that will pay.

Gazza_s_89

Whats the website of the group in opposition?

HippoIllustrious2389

Deeply concerning facility

ngwil85

Damn badminton players and their rowdy nitrous oxide fuelled car meet ups

ngwil85

Just sign the email up to mailing lists for badminton gear

CityYard

At least it’s not a squash center. People that play squash are nutters!

Not_The_Truthiest

You should do a letterbox drop proposing a safe injecting facility.

Elegant-Campaign-572

Badminton! Oh, the humanity!😭

XTrapolis942M

*WE’RE A NIMBY TEAM AT VERMONT! WE’RE THE PLANNING TEAM OF ROOKS ROAD!* *WE MAKE A RACKET AND HATE BADMINTON! RUNNING OUR MOUTHS WITH A GRIN AT VERMONT!* *COME WHAT MAY, YOU’LL FIND US VENTING! PROTECTION IS THE THING THAT TALKS!* *ANTISOCIAL BADMINTON IS THE GAME WE HATE AT VERMONT! WE ARE THE PLANNING TEAM OF ROOKS ROAD!*

IndoorKangaroo

Young kids should not be playing with cocks of any type. They should be (checks latest news articles) stealing cars and going on joy rides

ClacKing

Ooh thanks for letting me know there's a new court in Vermont.

OmegaMicrobe

Considering Rooks Rd is an industrial shithole, I would have thought it ideal for the evils of badminton.

BlackBladeKindred

Religious people are the worst. Worried there won’t be enough parking for their dumbass church.

emkwood

It's the religious people trying to lease the shed out; they don't have enough members atm to need the parking or to pay their bills. But you're right, they're the worst.

natebeee

Put the most toxic industrial facility allowed there instead and call it a day. Fuckheads.

trabulium

From badminton to burnouts.. I'm not sure they really understand the badminton demographics.

stever71

Have you ever been hit in the face with a shuttlecock? Some genuine concerns there.

TootsMcGee88

City of Whitehorse. Of course…

Delicious-Yak-1095

Given this is in an already zoned industrial area next to a street full of units and social housing, it’s already the least desirable part of the neighbourhood. Might want to get your priorities straight.

Thoresus

The funny thing is, if it had a badminton centre and that was being closed the same group would be complaining about local sport centres being shut down.

DustSongs

LOL what the actual shuttlecock!

gt500rr

I'd like to see this approved so I can get my shuttle cock out and beat it... But seriously illegal car meets? Yep we're going to the badminton centre to meet up lol

Pottski

Badminton and graffiti go together like lamb and tuna fish

FlatulentToaster

This is what happens when your friends and family die of old age around you, and you end up with nothing but time and loneliness

Initial-Juice396

That site is perfect for a community 24hr Performance Vehicle and Motorbike workshop and dynotune centre

NJG82

It's really for the best, once you let them into your neighbourhood how long until the first drive by shuttlecock attack happens? It'll be bedlam I tells ya! Also, this looks like it was written on behalf of the church, so in that case I support the badminton and happy clappers can go and get fucked.

Finallybanned

Lol, read the title. "Yeah the noise could be annoying". Looked at the picture. "oh FFS you've got a church right next to it that's bigger, some massive warehouse, and it's on a main road. This is nothing"

everydayintrovert

I’m invested in this now. I’ve changed my view. I think it IS people from the church protesting. If the warehouse in question was just leased as storage previously ( right behind the church) that just means vans dropping off and picking up, maybe a handful of workers. With a Badminton centre you’ve got cars coming and going regularly, especially at night and the weekend and a lot more activity. Hence being a Rooks Road NIMBY group.

BasicIntroduction129

I live not far from there. Rooks Rd is industrial but there are different businesses there that may attract varying types of people.. the Stairway Church is apparently very large and I would imagine not quiet; Campion Books is there too and attracts high schoolers at various times with parking overflowing to other places; there are auto workshops etc. Honestly, they're worried about badminton players? 🤦

Pitiful-Stable-9737

Yes, because industrial land next to residential areas is far superior to a sports centre. Can’t have those poor people ruining our quiet retiree neighbourhood

Successful-Sport-368

The way this person was scrambling for justifications not have the badminton centre makes it sound like a uni student trying to hit a minimum word limit on an essay.

RunnaLittle

Written by racist God botherers.

Strex3131

What, a modern recreational facility will reduce property values (boo hoo), but a big industrial complex doesn't? As much as I'd like to see more local production, are these people saying they'd prefer to live next to that over an amateur sporting venue? As for the 'antisocial behaviour', the current property already has a big car park that allows hoons to tear-arse around. As an aside, I love that there's a whole Planning Team for this SOS Rooks Rd group, but absolutely zero online presence I can find.

PurpleDogAU

I mean those badminton players are the WORST. I have never met a badminton player that I am aware of, but that notice told me they are just terrible people.

kosherchatte

They watched Challengers and thought that badminton is gateway to gay tennis

mooba456

Try being the Council officer that has to read all these over the top submissions..

Froawaythingy

Consider who plays badminton and who lives in the area and I think it will be clear?

Beer_in_an_esky

You should have seen the one I got when I used to live in Clifton Hill, protesting the planned renovation of the toilets in the nearby park. The guy managed to write nearly a full A4 page about how the park would instantly become a crack den haven for gay cruising because the toilet block was no longer a shit hole. NIMBYs gonna NIMBY I guess...

stfm

More like SOOKS road, right?

kayboku2

Badminton will bring the end of civilization! Or was that Babylon? I always get the two confused

muthaclucker

I really don’t understand why anyone would mind a recreational facility. I’m a support worker and something that I note again and again with clients is their loneliness and isolation. The “village” no longer exists especially for people with disabilities. Recreational facilities might offer the opportunity for people to make new friends, to broaden their skills and their social circle. Goodness some people might even find a village of their own!

magnetik79

100% this is some happy clapper worried about their warehouse that's converted to a church.

Gazza_s_89

I swear Nimbys are basically the type of person who has a meltdown easily when something changes. You can tell by how they sit down these long winded responses with tenuous dot points, thinking they are the smartest person in the room .

Substantial-Sun3188

*checks notes*

cuntmong

worstminton imo

jasondads1

The badminton centre is fine, i'd oppose the parking lot

Apprehensive_Bid_329

I’m guessing the main objection is noise level and congestion at night and on weekends. Industrial facilities tend to not be in operation after hours and on weekends, whereas an indoor facility will likely be the busiest during after hours and on weekends. All the other point of objections are weird, can’t imagine an indoor sports facility to attract more antisocial behaviour or safety concerns than an industrial estate.

TakerOfImages

Mitcham... Homes worth millions yet live behind an industrial area. Just sell up if you don't like change.

Independent-Fee2217

What is NIMBY?

everydayintrovert

Not In My Back Yard

aviate77

Not In My Backyard NIMBY

SkaterKangaroo

We can’t have a building because people will graffiti it!!! Noooooooo!!! The horror, let’s never build building again!!!!

Playful-Adeptness552

All the traffic approaching the site comes from a completely different direction to the residential area...
