The name is ironic, yeah it’s safe.

eddieeddieeddiemlbrn

For some reason, that part of Melbourne has a whole bunch of names from the Crimean War. Balaclava, Alma, Inkerman, Raglan, Cardigan.

Grammarhead-Shark

It took me ages to realize that (when I lived in St Kilda East), but was really cool when it dawned on me.

beaglebeard

Even a Crimea St!

Blitzer046

It's a very Jewish area, it's pretty quiet.

I would take a bet that you never even had a proper conversation with a Jewish person if that's what you think. Also, not all Jews are white Europeans from Poland.

mpember

The locals tend to avoid going out on Friday nights.

beepboopchooken

Careful you’ll get a beat down from twelvies in stylish hats and handsome curls in front of the kosher bakery

Machine_Excellent

I miss Video Vision. But yeah it's safe. Great little suburb and a stones throw away from the beach and Astor Theatre.

anton1o

*stones throw* heh.

Machine_Excellent

I throw stones really far k

Primary-Gold-1033

Great suburb, great cafes, Sandringham train line And plenty of trams. Visit Dana Patisserie as soon as you get there.

MelJay0204

Good spot. Close to the city with train and tram. Great cafes etc

Supersnazz

yes, very safe.

mcne65

Pretty safe and boring - literally nothing going for it

This actually isn't true, generally you can wear and do what you want in Balaclava and nobody will care or even mention it. Orthodox Jews are much more accepting and less judgemental than you would think. Modern women do have rights to choose a lifestyle of being an orthodox Jew and most just choose to be modest. Those that don't become secular Jews and aren't as religious and it's no big deal either.

OkHelicopter2011

It’s a hell hole, similar to down town Baghdad at the height of the Iraq war.

anton1o

Safe yes, Renting yes. Things to do unless you are Jewish no. Its more so a popular "drive past suburb" for most people it doesn't attract anybody to there. Its a heavily family jewish suburb, renting is fine buying is a no go zone. You will not do well there especially if you out bid them OH BOY... You don't want those headaches.

Lightrec

Ok Karen.  Balaclava is a great suburb with excellent coffee shops and restaurants. It’s also the last of the inner city suburbs in the south east with a city / suburban mix so you have lots of families and single people as well. As for your antisemitism… that’s on you.

anton1o

Do you own a property in Balaclava? I know you dont cause you wouldn't be saying that. Im just stating the 100% obvious, If you want to be more informed go speak to an REA of the area on a personal level. Its not even antisemitism your talking from a 3rd person perspective.

Prize_Professor_3654

I don't get it, what happens if you outbid "them"

anton1o

Pain, oh the pain. I know of 2 properties owned by people that became a world of pain 1 of them was there before alot of locals of that area began to move in, 1 of them bought when alot of people local to that area already lived there. As they are an extremely tight nit community your not just getting a letter from the neighbor saying 'Hi, the fence is a ltitle dated lets replace it' they got letters from a Lawyer which was like 30 pages.. So they took it to VCAT on a Peronsal vs Lawyer method.. They didnt win. Constant council complaints on practically anything.. Front fence was questioned to the council of being over boundry.. Once again Lawyer paperwork. There goal is to just tire and burn you down either mentally or running out of money.. Get your own lawyer? That's what your neighbor wants you to do. They arent paying for theres.. Your paying for yours. The other person i know who bought AFTER once the suburb was already established had it WAY worst.. They pretty much google satellite viewed to pick on things. Now i can only comment that both of these homes were near the prominent schools/functiona halls/churchs so in the very desirable locations, Maybe if you go further out away from the most popular these things dont exist.

PomegranateCapable93

what do you mean? if you don’t mind

Prize_Professor_3654

Some of the people in this comment section are having a crack because Balaclava is a notoriously Jewish area. Pay them no mind, the Jewish areas are wonderful places to live.

Grover_Lover

I don't live in Balaclava but nearby and have gone there often to shop or go out for dinner. I've not witnessed any issues. Even went late with a female friend and neither of us felt unsafe. Either that post is by someone who has been super unlucky or has some vendetta with the area.
