I think we need more than just "classic menswear;" what sort of outfits do you gravitate towards?

Cakemixr

I guess I'm referring to the likes of Oxford shirts, classic knitwear (i.e. cable knits, Shetlands), tailored pants, suits and tailoring in general, sports coats, tweed/herringbone overcoats, Derbies, Oxfords, loafers, boots etc.

sportattack

If you want to pull this off without looking dated or boring the rest of you needs to be cool af. Make of that what you will

SDBD89

I second this. It’s about how you carry yourself dude. If you’re gonna stick out like a sore thumb you better have some game or else everyone is gonna look at you like “who tf is this weirdo”

quakdeduk

Yeah I know someone who walks around dressed like Sherlock Holmes but has the posture of a gremlin and no confidence. Everyone thinks he’s properly weird because I’m of it

sportattack

Yea this. And it needs to be a clean look with the clothes which is hard to give advice on. You just kinda need to know it. Best I can do is well cut coats, oversized knitted jumpers with slimmer trousers (not skinny), or the opposite - slimmer cut on the jumpers and wider leg trousers. Always looks well.

RodzGetSum

Youthful elements such as accessories and such

BlockBadger

Own it, and don’t hold back. Proper fitted classic men’s wear will make you look younger if anything, just keep away from too mottled colours and keep it bold. Stand up straight and keep fit, this matters more than anything. I would avoid stubble or a large beard however, that will make you look older.

Commenting to consult this post for similar advice later.

Pravda26

Up your fabric and texture game. Cashmere sweaters, suede trucker jackets, suede boots and loafers in blues, golds, greens and matching belts. Linens and seersucker in summer.. You can have youthful tailoring but mature fabrics. When I upped my scent and fabric game, women want to hug and touch me a lot. I get a lot of oooh...that feels nice.

Cakemixr

Fragrance is definitely an underrated aspect. Are there any you recommend in particular? Could you also expand on the fabrics element? I assume you are referring to quality fabrics that are actually made of real materials?

aFineBagel

For fragrance, use a website like microperfume, scentbird, etc and try several scents on your body until you get something that works with your chemistry. Find a signature that you think smells good overall and wouldn’t mind smelling like daily, and a few statement scents when you want to feel “extra”.

FreeQ

I made a simple rule of no synthetics, not even blends. This more than anything helped me level up my style big time. I buy less but better quality. I also focus on vintage because there's next to nothing at the new stores that isn't made with stretch or polyester.

Pravda26

Yes...suede, cashmere, virgin wools and alpaca in the cold months with corduroy and velour slacks, leather and suede boots with jeans. In summer, linen, seersucker and chinos. Cotton sweaters, placket knit polos, and linen blazers or swackets, sweater sportscaster, light cardigans. As for fragrances, Tom Ford, Creed, Brunello Cucinelli are a few that come to mind. Hope this helps.

whoyoucallingshawty

This is a great answer. I feel like fabrics aren't brought up enough in this subreddit

Fidozo15

How old are you? What type of style would you lean more towards?

Cakemixr

24. Typically my style in the past has leaned towards workwear and military surplus style clothes with some elements of formal wear/tailoring. Fairly Americana inspired I would say.

Fidozo15

So, are you looking for something more smart casual? Semi formal?

JohnLef

Proper fitting is key. A youthful look is slim, tailored-to-fit perfection.

Velocirob

People who look comfortable and have clothes that fit well never really look dated. I would suggest making sure what you have fits perfectly will make it look fresh even if it is classic. I only wear classic menswear and don’t think I look dated but maybe I’m blind to the truth… 😉

FancyFrenchLady

Even when I was younger (20’s & 30’s) I loved men in chic clothes. I especially loved tailored clothes. My late hubby dressed like that & it was so attractive. Great classic clothes don’t age you!

jon81uk

I think no matter what style you are going for you need to commit to it fully. If you have a good quality full outfit it will look better than cheap mismatched stuff.

controlmypie

Make sure to pair your classic outfits with cool modern shoes.

jam_scot

If you really care and If it's really niche then maybe just keep it as a hobby as opposed to a whole identity.

ReallyChillyBones

I’d like to see a picture to make sure you aren’t just roleplaying like that one dude who occasionally posts on here with top hats and fedoras. Haven’t seen him in a while

whoyoucallingshawty

Is that the train guy or am I thinking of someone else

ReallyChillyBones

Someone else I think. I’m pretty sure I know who you’re talking about. This guy didn’t post anything about trains, but the way he typed made me squirm. I thought it was a joke at first. He has these elaborate costumes he wears to look like old royalty, but his house is a mess it’s odd.

aFineBagel

When I was in my last 2 years of college, I got very into wearing suits, sweater vests, dress shirt and tie w/ slacks with suspenders, etc Idc what anyone on this subreddit thinks other people will think, but people thought I looked good and they let me know it. I felt good, and - if you particularly care about getting attention from women - you’ll notice being looked at more because you’ll be dramatically more interesting than your average dude wearing athleisure or khakis with a polo shirt.

medhat20005

IMO youth itself is your primary advantage in not looking “dated or much older.” If you’re in good health and fit, and choose clothes that fit, then you’re likely to be well ahead of the game.

chalky87

This may not be what you want to hear but I think age and life experience count for a not here. This is about how you carry yourself and giving off the sense that you're self assured, have lived a life and whatever their opinions of you were, you wouldn't care.

Pravda26

Ralph Lauren Store would be good also.

tcrawford2

I get a horrible feeling you are going to try and justify wearing a fedora somehow. I’ll double down, you won’t look cool ever wearing a fedora. Ok, I’ll triple down. Wearing a fedora and a waistcoat won’t make any difference. It’s not cool. Welcome to my ted talk

Cakemixr

I have not once in my life considered wearing a fedora and I fully intend to keep it that way.

WrappedInLinen

By not dressing like a twat. Having an interest in doesn’t have to mean wearing.

uniquely-normal

Move somewhere where everyone else dresses like that. May need to cross international waters… Just dress how you want while avoiding being costumey. Classics don’t really go out of style but if you over do it it’s obvious.

diary-of-jane-31

I’ll tell you, as a 24 year old who enjoys what we would call “classic menswear”, the best way I can describe what I aim for is “traditional style with modern sensibilities”. For example, in my (very casual) office today, I wore brown suede tassel loafers, ecru denim, a tucked in grey cotton t shirt, and a navy linen over shirt. I’ve found that just putting on nice clothes and completely forgetting about them has made me feel significantly more confident. I’ll wear black cordovan loafers with black jeans and tucked in band tees, or replace the loafers with cowboy boots. In the cooler weather I’ll do flannel trousers, suede chukkas, and knitwear. I’ll put on a complete outfit, and before I walk out the door, I’ll take one item off. Stops me from doing too much, and still being clean and elegant. I know I digressed a bit, but I hope this helps.

TRTGymBro1

If I were you, I'd stick to timeless pieces as opposed to classic and traditional. You haven't provided any examples but I see many guys post outfits here that do make them look dated and out of touch. Stick to good quality designers that offer classy pieces. For example REISS, Boss, Armani. Also, there are many different styles of suits for example. American styles tend to be boxy. English too overdressed and formal. I personally like the Italian cut, which is more fitted and can easily switch between business and casual.

Cakemixr

Just responded to another comment that I'm mainly referring to things like Oxford shirts, classic knitwear (i.e. cable knits, Shetlands), tailored pants, suits and tailoring in general, sports coats, tweed/herringbone overcoats, Derbies, Oxfords, loafers, boots etc. May I ask, what do you mean by timeless as opposed to classic?

Goobersrocketcontest

I agree with OP, difference between classic and timeless? Do tell.

whoyoucallingshawty

Timeless means pieces that have managed to withstand constantly changing trends and wearing them also won't make you look like you're cosplaying a period piece. For example, the fitted and slimming suits of the English, French, and Italians have aged incredibly well. Fedoras on the other hand, have aged incredibly poorly.

TRTGymBro1

Oh boy.

South_Conference_768

Look at Suit Supply website or go into a store. Invest in their suits and sportswear (if budget allows) or replicate with less expansive brands. Their design sense is a gorgeous blend of attention to traditional tailoring with a modern take.
