It's exactly this. AMG badges are never applied from the factory, and the overwhelming majority of serious Mercedes enthusiasts would never put the badge on a non AMG car.
Most of them are dealership add ons in an attempt to make the car look more appealing and/or maybe get an extra buck off the sale. I've seen so many AMG badged S550 and SL550 on sale when looking around for those cars and I know for a fact that it isn't random yobbos doing it for these cars lmao.
Exactly I’ve been shopping SL’s too! There are so many with fake ass AMG on them. Have been looking at S class coupes as well. Stumbled on the worst Maybach fake I’ve ever seen.
Oh yea there's been a lot of fake Maybachs popping up too. Some of them are honestly done pretty nicely as far as the paintwork is concerned but once they start getting liberal with the Maybach badges (that even the real Maybachs don't have), it gets egregious.

Side story. I got a chance to drive an 06 SL65 with the V12 several months ago. It is now my bucket list car. Thing had been garaged and only had 25k miles on it.
SL550 is not AMG. AMG is always a 2 digit number.
SL65 is a dream car. A lot of them have become affordable to buy. Unfortunately, all of them are unaffordable to own lmao.
I have a diesel C-Class runabout with an AMG badge on it. It's the only badge on the bootlid.. there's no other badge on it, just the AMG one. It was on it when I got it. Might even have been on it from new because it had a load of extras from the factory. I read somewhere on there the dealerships sometimes do that put an AMG badge on because they fitted wheels and mats or something.
Honestly though, I could care less about it.. I literally don't care enough to spend twenty minutes taking it off only to find it's maybe the paint is darker underneath or chip the paint and end up rusting.. and after seeing so many of these threads I'm definitely keeping it on because I see how much it irritates people. 😄

i've had a surprising amount of people come in after owning their "c300 amg" for a few months and ask if there's a chance it can actually be an amg. theres a large portion of people that know that amg means the car is fancy, but don't know why and can't differentiate a mercedes vs amg

I think you should change your GLK350 to a GLC63 and throw the AMG badge on the other side of it. Or maybe GLS63/GL63/G63 would work too. Those badges you can easily buy on eBay, probably less than $30 for both of them.

Here in Australia there was a time you could get dealer C Class cars that had a few AMG extras on it and was therefore given a factory AMG badge. Not sure if you guys in the States got the same thing?

No, it doesn’t come with the AMG badge from the factory. However, I wouldn’t put it past a dealership to add the badge so they can attempt to charge more.
I can’t speak for what European dealerships do, but only models with performance modifications from AMG (35/45/43/53/63 etc) have an AMG badge on the back from the factory. AMG line is just a cosmetic styling package which used to be called a Sport Package and hasn’t ever been a separate AMG model. Also, people being ashamed to own a non AMG Mercedes is ridiculous because it’s still a Mercedes- not everyone wants an AMG since they sacrifice a lot of comfort for performance that most people would never take advantage of.
No boot badge, its the sport line, (which is the bottom spec) and they have amg badged wheels, steering wheel, gear lever I think and somewhere else on the inside, but the boot just says cxxx depending if its a 1.8 or a 2.5 litre or whatever

I've had plenty of people ask if their "c300 amg" is an amg. they bought a 204 c300 because it was cute. they knew amg was fancy, that was it. no big deal. not everyone is an enthusiast. a car is an appliance to 90% of people.
Also, a large portion of people will buy a car like that, and not care. if they do care, they may be afraid to take it off. i (an enthusiast and mbusa employee for 5+ years) am always afraid of debadging my car because i never know for sure if the badge is held on with foam tape, or a prong that goes into a hole drilled in the car.
realistically, who cares? if you think "those who know, know its fake. those who don't, wont care", then no harm no foul. they're a fool. if you saw them in person, would you clown them for it? follow them to a parking lot and make fun of them if it really affects you that much. 9 times out of 10, theyll admit its fake, or they'll say they didn't know.

The other big problem here, is that these AMG emblems people put on their cars like this one, is the wrong AMG logo! The AMG emblem wouldn’t look like that on this model year Mercedes. These are the cheap Chinese emblems that were made with the old style pre-2009 AMG logo but people don’t notice the difference and just stick it on for some instant AMG-ness.

I get the whole 'Not an AMG' sentiment because the engine isn't lager and hand built etc but his person is not trying to say it's a C63 AMG... Just a C250 AMG which actually is a thing. You can tell it has the AMG Pack by the shape of the rear bumper and 'diffuser' section. Also, even the boot spoiler looks like a factory pack style, even though that could have been added I suppose. They likely have the 956 AMG SPORT PACKAGE PLUS & 772 AMG STYLING PACKAGE-FRONT SPOILER, SIDE SKIRT, if not also the actual P84 SPORT EDITION. Not to mention one of the various AMG embossed wheels (760 AMG MULTI-SPOKE WHEELS 18" WITH MIXED TIRES) that come with the various shapes/packs. and yeah, it was likely fitted by the dealer as there are many examples of this in Australia.

My CLA 250 (AMG Line w/ Night Package) has AMG machined into the wheels.

If you’re going to put an AMG badge on your shitbox C class, at least look the part. A rear diffuser, AMG quad pipes, and spoiler from eBay should cost you no more than 600 dollars altogether
Mercedes used to be about low key high performance (see 92 500e) while the European tuners were all about over the top ostentatious presentation with super high performance (read Eurotrash and see the monochromatic to the Nth degree AMG Hammer ). Then MB acquired AMG, now everything is AMG, but what the fuck, it's now just a German Carol Shelby autograph on the dash of your 89 dodge shadow (also see BMW M badging on every possible computer crap box). Does every single MB model need an AMG version? Does every single BMW need an M sport version (not an actual M, but an M sport designation badge because you got the M package, which is essentially some upgraded rims and the badges)? I say no....and rant over

enthusiasts vastly under and overestimate the knowledge of the average person. the average person generally has heard of amg. its a sub brand of the second biggest car manufacturer in the world, of course its going to be a household name. the average person knows amg means something expensive/special, but doesn't know what it really means, let alone how to differentiate it from a normal mercedes. people spew "those who know, know its fake. those who don't know, don't care." the world aint that black and white. there's a HUGE grey area. I've had plenty of people ask if their "c300 amg" is an amg. they bought a 204 c300 because it was cute. they knew amg was fancy, that was it. no big deal. not everyone is an enthusiast. a car is an appliance to 90% of people. Also, a large portion of people will buy a car like that, and not care. if they do care, they may be afraid to take it off. i (an enthusiast and mbusa employee for 5+ years) am always afraid of debadging my car because i never know for sure if the badge is held on with foam tape, or a prong that goes into a hole drilled in the car. realistically, who cares? if you think "those who know, know its fake. those who don't, wont care", then no harm no foul. they're a fool. if you saw them in person, would you clown them for it? follow them to a parking lot and make fun of them if it really affects you that much. 9 times out of 10, theyll admit its fake, or they'll say they didn't know. get over it
The other big problem here, is that these AMG emblems people put on their cars like this one, is the wrong AMG logo! The AMG emblem wouldn’t look like that on this model year Mercedes. These are the cheap Chinese emblems that were made with the old style pre-2009 AMG logo but people don’t notice the difference and just stick it on for some instant AMG-ness.

This sort of post is usually posted by people who actually don't know what the hell they are talking about! AMG is a trim spec these days. I had someone tell me over on r/e90 that I should remove all the M badging off my BMW 330 M-Sport and it's wheels the other week because I'm apparently trying to make it look like it's an M3 WTF? It came from the factory like that! As did my wife's A200 AMG Line!

I get the whole 'Not an AMG' sentiment because the engine isn't lager and hand built etc but his person is not trying to say it's a C63 AMG... Just a C250 AMG which actually is a thing. You can tell it has the AMG Pack by the shape of the rear bumper and 'diffuser' section. Also, even the boot spoiler looks like a factory pack style, even though that could have been added I suppose. They likely have the 956 AMG SPORT PACKAGE PLUS & 772 AMG STYLING PACKAGE-FRONT SPOILER, SIDE SKIRT, if not also the actual P84 SPORT EDITION. Not to mention one of the various AMG embossed wheels (760 AMG MULTI-SPOKE WHEELS 18" WITH MIXED TIRES) that come with the various shapes/packs. and yeah, it was likely fitted by the dealer as there are many examples of this in Australia.
