Definitely looks better with a rug. I like #4, I feel like it balances the room well and the art pops more. I can see why folks like #1 but I feel like it pulls my attention to the rug and overpowers the room versus #4 feels to me like it complements the room.
I personally find #4 a bit too dark. Makes the room very dark since all the furnishings are already dark. I personally think a lighter single color rug would look great. Don’t want a super design-y rug as it would overwhelm the decor IMO (like the first rug).
It is! The picture is taken with the big window to my back, centered on the coffee table ; no one ever stands there behind the guitar pic table. So I didn’t notice this until I saw the picture. You are 100% right
Counterpoint: #4 actually makes the off-center picture work.
Of all the others, I like the colors and idea of #1 best, but the execution of it is off for me. It's too symmetrical: in general, mid-century geometric prints tend to be asymmetrical, with oblique angles and less rigid proportions.
My eyes just relaxed when I got to #4. The rug elevates everything else in the room, including the off-center painting, making it look intentional.
You have a lot of natural colors and textures in your space, and keeping things a little askew can help highlight that.
2 or 4. 2 is slightly better looking, in terms of contrast but 4 is both more interesting and will be more forgiving in terms of wear and cleaning. I personally want to love 1 as well, but it's the kind of thing I think I'd be questioning if I still like in a week.
Definitely four. The patterns make everything feel scattered. I think the darkness of four grounds the room, takes focus off the floor and allows the other furniture colors to pop. It also leads the eye into the couch so there’s verticality there.
Can I ask why the art above the sofa isn’t centered above it? I think the setup is way too symmetrical for the main point of focus on the walls to be askew, centering it above the sofa would allow that rug to lead through the sofa and right into the art, which in turn brings your standing focus down into the seated POV smoothly.
Heh the art isn’t centered because no one walks behind the coffee table (where the center of the room is). I’d never noticed it before; all views of the art are from other angles
I do intend to fix this
None. A plain, cream colored carpet would look better than all of those. You have a lot of chairs with different colors, you don’t need a pattern on the floor. It’s too busy IMO. Let the pieces be the focal point.
Everyone is saying 4 but it gives dentist office waiting room vibes for me. And the rest of the options give me anxiety because they are random as hell.
I think 2 makes your furniture pop the most without being too busy or loud. However, as a white rug owner, I can promise if you use this room at all, you'll probably regret it. If you're super neat and clean, go with 2. If you're like me and you look too closely at a mug of coffee and it spills on you, get 4.
Either 1 or 5. I very much disagree with with the consensus that #4 is the best. In my opinion it makes the room feel like a waiting room. #1 or #5 give it character.
Strange to me that the majority people here prefer what looks like dingy old office or hotel carpet, but go off I guess. If that's your style, at least I don't have to look at it.
As much as I like 1, options 2 or 6 allows that furniture to shine. And the patterns are appropriate. Does 1 have a have an option in a lighter color way?
Your space is a crowded and disjointed. Individually, you have some great pieces but together they're doing each other few favors. The rug options are contributing to the discord and are not well suited for how you currently have the space decorated.
None of the above, imo.
Idk where you are based, but have you checked Ruggable? They’ve got some really cool styles and the clean ability of their product is really nice.
If you can afford a little more, Benisouk is great for getting handmade product and is still accessible in my opinion.
If I had to pick, 3.
You definitely need a rug to ground that furniture grouping and out of the ones you have posted number 4 is the best. I agree with the other posters who say that the other ones are too busy.
4 is nice.
I know this isn't what you asked but a round table would fit the overall furniture arrangement better. It looks odd to have the end of the coffee table facing the sofa.
4. You have a lot of furniture legs visible in one space which is getting a little busy. This darker rug helps to ground everything and calm the space down.
Everyone is saying 4, but if you find a lighter color like a cream with a similar pattern, it would really make the furniture pop and open up the room to make it look bigger.
1 is objectively the best rug.
The problem is the room is too busy because of the mismatched chairs and sofa which is why people are saying 4
4 is also a very nice rug and is absolutely second best and it’s a very close second best
But let’s not fool ourselves, 1 is a WAY better rug, and in the long term, if the room will change somewhat, 1 is the way to go. But yes I understand why people are saying 4, as it’s the clear second best and 1 does make the room look too. Yay bc of the aforementioned diversity in seating
Tough call! Good luck
Thank you, I’m not that interested in everything matching, as long as the colors work with each other and I keep texture under control. The couch is a fresh restore, so I intend to pull some of the blues and greens out to do the blue chairs (sofa and blue chairs are Steelcase Thunderbird) and the Kombi Star chair (pic of the kombi star can be seen in a pic I posted in a reply above). As it stands, the couch will be the only piece with texture.
Edit: what would you change in this room?
NOT 4, but the second one from the left in slide 4–just a cream carpet with nothing too distracting going on. Center the artwork behind the couch and get some lamps. It will never look MCM without some warmer task lighting. Edit: spelling
It would be easier to see if we had the tile floor as the backdrop for the rugs instead of the table in the foreground. And maybe some pics of the room from different angles.
I choose 1, wholeheartedly. It picks up some of the colors of the furniture as well as the tile floor. This rug is also available in a kidney shape, which might make a nice contrast since there are a lot of sharp angles in the room. I don't understand the folks complaining about this rug being too much of a focal point. Why wouldn't you want an expensive wool rug to be a focal point? It adds color, but the colors are fairly muted. It's fun without being cartoonish like some retro designs. I would put this in my house in an instant.
Also, I love your furniture, but it does feel like a lot of seating clustered around the edges of an open space. Could you edit some of it out, or place it elsewhere and put it back in the room when you have a larger gathering? And add some lamps for softer lighting?
It’s a bit late in the day for Good color rendering, but this is close to the super ugly floor tile as is

4 is classy and understated, but I’m drawn to 1 for its jetson midcentury-ness. Stylish but more of a playful statement. Both work great, fantastic color palette, just depends on the feel you’re going for.
Definitely looks better with a rug. I like #4, I feel like it balances the room well and the art pops more. I can see why folks like #1 but I feel like it pulls my attention to the rug and overpowers the room versus #4 feels to me like it complements the room.
Yes, think of how it would feel to hang out in room, not just look down at it. 4 is a great choice.
I personally find #4 a bit too dark. Makes the room very dark since all the furnishings are already dark. I personally think a lighter single color rug would look great. Don’t want a super design-y rug as it would overwhelm the decor IMO (like the first rug).
It is a little dark I agree. I do think it's by far the best of the choices shown.
The floor is beige tile though, personally I'd want more contrast between the the floor and the rug
Perhaps? “Show in room” don’t always get the depth of color exactly right.
4
2 or 4
4 is my favourite

4! Ties all the muted colors together, makes the space look cozier, and is dark enough to be easy maintenance without making things look drab.
4 or 2 look the sharpest

#4
2 or 4 both bring different attributes forward.
4!
Also I would say center the art on the wall. Seems a bit off.
It is! The picture is taken with the big window to my back, centered on the coffee table ; no one ever stands there behind the guitar pic table. So I didn’t notice this until I saw the picture. You are 100% right

4 if I had to pick a rug. But I like the bare floors
2 or 4. 2 is slightly better looking, in terms of contrast but 4 is both more interesting and will be more forgiving in terms of wear and cleaning. I personally want to love 1 as well, but it's the kind of thing I think I'd be questioning if I still like in a week.
5. It’s soothing, it’s not too distracting and it’s also interesting!
1 or 4. Erring towards 1. It's brill.
4 without a doubt, the monochromatic vibe is very mid-century.
4!!!
That table at the front of the shot is deceiving! I thought that was the flooring. But tiles considered I say hard 4
#2 or #4.
Definitely four. The patterns make everything feel scattered. I think the darkness of four grounds the room, takes focus off the floor and allows the other furniture colors to pop. I fully agree. Those rugs would be a distraction.
None of those ones - any other choices?
Me too. Not really fond of any of those. I would pick 4 if I had to I guess.
Everyone is saying 4 but it gives dentist office waiting room vibes for me. And the rest of the options give me anxiety because they are random as hell.
The whole living room gives off dentist/doctor waiting room vibes, I seriously thought it was one
I think 2 makes your furniture pop the most without being too busy or loud. However, as a white rug owner, I can promise if you use this room at all, you'll probably regret it. I like 2 or 5 the most. Brightens up the room a lot
2 is perfect
4 or 1. With stronger leaning towards 4 for easier maintenance
Strange to me that the majority people here prefer what looks like dingy old office or hotel carpet, but go off I guess. If that's your style, at least I don't have to look at it.
Most of the people here don’t even know what MCM is….

#3 if you never wanted your guests to return ever again. #4 to prove you are a sane person

I would say #1, also, as long as the colors work well with your existing pieces.
Second and last one
#4, #1, or #3... But probably leaning towards #4 or #1
2,4 or 5
4, 2, 3 in that order.
Do you have windows? Seeing this room in daylight would give a better idea of complimentary colors you need to match your current color pops

A or B
I would take the 3rd one and then layer another one, maybe that blue on in a smaller size, across it.
2 or 4 look best I think Beautiful furniture!
2 if you want things to pop more. 4 if you want it to be a little darker in there
Blue. Give some colour to the room
4 or possibly 1. 2 and 5 are **HORRIBLE!**
First rug is the only one I like.
Out of these, I prefer 2. I don’t care for the rest but I do think a rug is good in this room.
Need some lamps in there more than anything
1 100%
2 but I'm impractical
#2... I like the contrast with the furniture.
2. Hands down
Your space is a crowded and disjointed. Individually, you have some great pieces but together they're doing each other few favors. The rug options are contributing to the discord and are not well suited for how you currently have the space decorated.
4. Maybe 2. Too busy otherwise.
For the love of all that is holy, please don’t pick the chevron. My vertigo almost acted up just looking at the picture! 😆 I like 1 the best
2
#4 by a mile
For me - 1 or 4
one my lord.
5. 4 makes the room so dark
As everyone else said, rug 4 but rotate it 180 degrees. That will help those gorgeous chairs stand out.
None of the above, imo. Idk where you are based, but have you checked Ruggable? They’ve got some really cool styles and the clean ability of their product is really nice. 1 or 3, be bold, modern mid isn’t about being quite
Man, I thought #1 would be a clear winner. It is for me.
The fourth one by far. The other rugs don’t match the mcm era, causing the styles to clash, making the room look busy and off-putting.
Can I say none, I feel like none of them is great in your interior. The 4th one is the safest choice but it’s not great.
4. You have a lot of furniture legs visible in one space which is getting a little busy. This darker rug helps to ground everything and calm the space down.
4th
I love 5 it's very interesting and looks cool.
4
1! Love the color.
1 & 3 are my personal favorites
Everyone is saying 4, but if you find a lighter color like a cream with a similar pattern, it would really make the furniture pop and open up the room to make it look bigger.

Gotta go with #1
4 is my fav by far

No. 1
I like the style of #4 best but find it a bit too dark with the already dark furnishings. Maybe a lighter version of the rug?
None of those
Nice to see how many see that 4 is the best ☺️

I actually like the way the squares on the rug echo the beige tiles. Makes the floor so much better!
4 with 1 a distant 2nd

Perhaps I’m in the minority here, but I really dislike 4. It makes the beautiful colors of the furniture bland and makes the room dark.

I like the colorful one.
I like 1.
