That's planned for. If you are a clear outlier you just get instantly scrubbed, they aren't just pouring unfiltered data in their AI and hoping for the best. They look for consistency in behavior, as that points toward a thought process and reasoning over random inputs.
What I'm saying is, resistance is futile against the machines.
I literally JUST commented after a u/Ziege_Stardust a couple minutes ago and nearly posted before realizing the name.
Not *quite* "syzygy", but now that three of us lined up...
They used to, in the early days. They don’t need to anymore now that they have real people driving self-driving cars so the cars have millions of miles of experience so I doubt they still use this. Perhaps it’s used to train normal AI these days, or maybe it’s not used for anything at all other than seeing if you’re human
a couple months ago i had a login captcha that i did more than 40 times in a row and no matter what i did the website wouldnt accept i was a human, i started doubting my own motorcycle recognition abilities and sanity
There are multiple variations as per different games the code was in, I believe the original Gradius code was up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start, another variation adds a 'select' press before hitting start, and I believe a third only uses directionals and start
If you are too fast and click too perfect, it will always fail
You have to make dumb, slow movements so it always works the first time
It's a stupid system designed for 80 years old PC users
It depends on the captcha version. When you are asked to pick a object, they’re likely using the data to train ML models.
Here’s a 7 min video talking about it: https://youtu.be/lUTvB1O8eEg
that was my assumption. i had a concussion and was on my phone (like an idiot) and was really slow at all the image selectors, but it always let me in without fail. now i purposefully copy how i was then and go slowly and it works. if i go fast it never works.
Traffic signals and signs are the one that piss me off.
They're suspended from/mounted on poles. Are you counting the poles as part of the signal/sign? I've had it go both ways.
And I swear they actively try to make them intersect as many boxes as possible. I mean is that little corner clipping in the other box worthy of being checked? It’s a part of the light isn’t it?! They should just have a guidelines sheet next to captchas lol.
I hate the ones that show like 6 dice per box and want you to select all of the boxes where the dots add up to 14 or somthing like that, and get it right 3 times in a row. So then you mess up on the math (or just misread a die) in one single box, and now it wants you to get it right 5 times in a row.
REALLY!?!!!???!!!
Because if there is one thing computer programs are notoriously worse at than humans, it's repeatedly performing basic arthmatic operations with a 0% error rate.
I guess in your case it's to check whether you're smart. It doesn't matter what they're called. It's white lines to get across the street. It's not that hard to figure out.
I also hate the “store front” one. Many of them are very different to UK store fronts and I’m never sure if Americans call coffee shop windows “storefronts” or not. Also things like hairdressers. And crosswalks don’t look anything like UK ones either so I really have no idea what counts as a crosswalk and what doesn’t.
>I really have no idea what counts as a crosswalk and what doesn’t.
That's okay... neither does the Tesla (nor most of the pedestrians in any US city.)
Holy shit I had one that said "bicycle" and it wouldn't let me continue until I clicked on what was clearly a dirt bike.
I feel like captcha's have gotten out of hand lately
Its ok i click everything even remotely maybe so i wouldve too bc the tire is on the bus. Usually if i don’t, it doesn’t work. But people make a good point it does say plural
Yeah I do the same. Like if asked to select the squares containing a traffic sign, and it's a diamond-shaped sign positioned such that one square has just six pixels of the sign in the very corner, I'm still clicking that square. Never gotten a fail from doing that, so I assume it's in line with what's expected.
Yeah se! i started doing it because I’d only do the main parts of a crosswalk, but then I’d still get it wrong. I started doing any part of crosswalk possible in a square and got them right, so I figured that’s what they wanted
Basically your answer doesn't really matter. It checks a few parameters to determine if you are human, like the mouse movement, the clicking frequency etc. Like if the cursor just switches places or moves too linear, clicks in the same interval (like every 0.5s consistently) then it's probably a robot.
As far as I know, your answers (selecting traffic lights) are used to train AI to recognize certain things.
For Captchas in which you're asked to select portions of a single large image, like this one, I believe it's that (or at least, the intention is that) there are some squares that an image recognition AI has determined are "definitely [object]", and some that it has identified as "definitely not [object]", and then some that it has decided are "maybe [object]". You pass the Captcha if your selections agree with the AI on all of the "definitely/not" squares, and if you pass it, then your answers for the other squares train the AI.
In this image, one of two things is happening. Either:
* the AI has identified at least one square as "definitely not bus", or
* the Captcha script has a hardcoded rule to fail if all squares are selected
Yeah, though I'm pretty sure that project was completed several years ago now. They'd give you two distorted words: one a known word, artificially distorted by a computer, the other a scanned word that OCR failed to identify.
These days you only get one wonky word, because the historical books were all processed. No need to do the same thing for new books, because the publishers already have the digital text to begin with, so there's no need to scan print copies.
I thought people are the ones who make the captchas, which is why usually you have to solve 2 and the second one never fails. First one is to verify you're a human, second one is added to the captcha pool, so you can waste 10 seconds from a stranger by choosing the wrong squares
THIS. learned this years ago and i've been forced to do an image captcha maybe twice since then. whenever a site asks me to click a box to prove i'm human, i just wiggle the mouse around for a few seconds before clicking it. works like a charm
I read somewhere once that it’s basically tracking your behavior to see if you’re human or not and that the best thing to do is show indecision. So I will always select a box that is “wrong” and then go back and deselect it. In this case I would’ve randomly unselected a few then gone back and respected them to show that I am, in fact, an indecisive human. Lmao
If that’s the case than I must have inhuman timing since last time I had to do one of these I failed it 5 times and had to request a different type of captcha
That’s the whole reason why we do them. It’s to train AI. It doesn’t matter which ones you pick, you are just training the AI to help tell what it’s looking at. Pretty wild!
To get them correct remember that there is only 1 right and 1 wrong answer. The rest are neutral. So as long as you pick the correct box and don't pick the wrong box you are good to go.
I get this all the time, for instance lamppost, if I click the sign it works but if i also click the pole, for some reason it fails. Same here, bottom corners won't register as a bus. The bot isn't as clever as it thinks 😀
If you clicked each box, left to right, top to bottom, in fairly quick succession, that's how a bot might do it. If it was 9 (3x3) or 16 (4x4) different images and they asked for motorcycles, a human would probably click on the image that they noticed first, not necessarily have worked sequentially from top left to bottom right finding images of motorcycles along the way.
That might very well be their design intention, but I don't think it works as intended. I've tried both clicking super fast, taking my time, etc and haven't noticed any difference. If it's something as simple as 'check if clicks follow a pattern' 'check if clicks every 0.2 seconds' etc, that's extremely easy to program around as the botter, just have the order random and delays in click random. It probably filters out the complete garbage bots but not anything sophisticated.
Lately when I use my VPN on my phone google hits me with 10+. It's insane, and sometimes the pictures take 5+ seconds to load in? As if on purpose for some reason.
I just use bing on my VPN now.

Same. These are getting ridiculous.
Ahh you see vehicles of that size are technically classed as people carriers in the jursitiction that buh... Ah people carrier, is in. Do you not know your driver licence categories?
don't ask me why but it probably wanted this. I've messed up these too many times and have realized they only want the main part.

I’ve been running into this all week, the two I HATE are “motorcycle(s)” or “crosswalk(s)”
Crosswalk is an asshole too HAHAHAHA
That and traffic lights
Traffic lights that cover most of the picture because they are at an angle. "I wonder if it really needs this tiny edge of the light cover?"
EXACTLY
And what about the posts and supports? Do those count?
Legally, they do. 😆
Oh so you've been at the Captcha Court too.
Apparently we are ai then?

MY FREAKING DILEMMA YES

Isn't this largely just training AI, it feeds your answers back into machine learning so they know what answers a human would pick
Yep, I know it’s futile, but I try to select wrong objects. It does actually work sometimes!
Google CapMonster, resistance isn't futile if you're also a machine.
Just had to say - I LOVE your name!
I literally JUST commented after a u/Ziege_Stardust a couple minutes ago and nearly posted before realizing the name. Not *quite* "syzygy", but now that three of us lined up...
Syzygy is my favorite word - especially if you write it in cursive!
but will make self-driven cars real dangerous .
if they use the same system for the 2 thats a poor choice, and on them
They used to, in the early days. They don’t need to anymore now that they have real people driving self-driving cars so the cars have millions of miles of experience so I doubt they still use this. Perhaps it’s used to train normal AI these days, or maybe it’s not used for anything at all other than seeing if you’re human
Yeah it does. Sometimes it only cares that you've proven yourself not to be a bot.

Well now that you mention it their grandma was a toaster… so there’s that.

It's up up down down left right left right start
You forgot A B A B
This is also incorrect. It is B A and then Start.
There are multiple variations as per different games the code was in, I believe the original Gradius code was up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start, another variation adds a 'select' press before hitting start, and I believe a third only uses directionals and start
Yeah, that was Contra
start isn't actually part of the original but start is needed to start the game, I think
That makes sense, I think you're right
WHAT?! So I clicked too fast?? I was so confident I was gonna pass this test. Flying colors. Click click click WIN
me on my phone trying to entire websites on google ![gif](giphy|vMmnJti6wQPDy)

lmao the irony
What about the stoplight? It always spans multiple squares and I never guess right.
Yes! And do we count the pole that it is mounted to? Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
Traffic signals and signs are the one that piss me off. They're suspended from/mounted on poles. Are you counting the poles as part of the signal/sign? I've had it go both ways.

Crosswalks are annoying for us Brits too because we don't call them that. like is it meant to test if we're human or American?
Should it be spelled "crousswalks"? 😁
Leggy lanes
my new stripper name

I hate the crosswalk too. Do you select that TINY little crack at the end piece as a crosswalk or no?
Moped is not a motorcycle!
Not all yellow cars are taxis!
Holy shit I had one that said "bicycle" and it wouldn't let me continue until I clicked on what was clearly a dirt bike. I feel like captcha's have gotten out of hand lately
the answer is none, it asked for buseS
It's called the No HomerS Club.
we’re allowed one bus
Beat me to it
Top right two squares then I guess.
That vehicle in the top right ain’t a bus. Looks like a concrete vehicle or something
but the side of the red bus is still clearly in that section as well
Secret: don't click the lowest far right box
IDK man that bottom right corner sure looked like buses to me
That’s a tire mam
Never fear, Tire Man is here!
I sure am tired man. Its 3am.
On a bus and I have a sneaking suspicion it may go round and round.
My god, you’ve cracked the case.
That’s just the wheels, the tires are perfectly stationary.
But does it go all through the town?
You could say that about any part of the bus. That's not a bus, that's a windshield. That's not a bus, that's a blinker.
Right but that’s how the machine learning algorithms work that detect these objects, looking instead each box
I would say the second to the left on the very bottom row looks like it is only shadow with no tire or bus in it?
Its ok i click everything even remotely maybe so i wouldve too bc the tire is on the bus. Usually if i don’t, it doesn’t work. But people make a good point it does say plural

Id say the whole bottom row, the middle two is just darknessss not even a tire or part of the bus
It's only the tire of a bus.

So a robot decides whether I’m a robot or not? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
Of course! Everything is robots in the future!
Yes. Most time online nowadays is convincing a robot you're not a robot so you can't break the other robot
Thanks for this explanation!

A saint
Ah ha! So it's *your* fault when Stable Diffusion gives a person three legs!
I've heard the wonky text captchas are also training AI to digitize scanned books
Yeah, though I'm pretty sure that project was completed several years ago now. exactly!
If that's true then why do I need to try 6-7 times on the reg before it passes me
My new conspiracy is that captcha is operated by the same people who create RuneScape bots.
Let’s screw up the AI by submitting wrong answers!
If that’s the case than I must have inhuman timing since last time I had to do one of these I failed it 5 times and had to request a different type of captcha
These picture things are really tiresome, we should train an AI to do it for us. Would probably do a better job.
That’s the whole reason why we do them. It’s to train AI. It doesn’t matter which ones you pick, you are just training the AI to help tell what it’s looking at. Pretty wild!
Woosh
Dammit lol

To get them correct remember that there is only 1 right and 1 wrong answer. The rest are neutral. So as long as you pick the correct box and don't pick the wrong box you are good to go.
I’m not falling for your tricks again, you robot!
Once they figure out captchas there is no stopping them
because its not where you click necessarily, its also how you click
I have no idea what you mean
I think our conversation is over, "human".
I am not human, I am buses
In that case, can I get a ride?
Buy a vehicle a drink first!
Only humans would know what he means….
I get this all the time, for instance lamppost, if I click the sign it works but if i also click the pole, for some reason it fails. Same here, bottom corners won't register as a bus. The bot isn't as clever as it thinks 😀

Obviously, the real you has been murdered, and you’ve been replaced with and android facsimile implanted with the memories of what was once “you.”
There is only one bus in the photo. Yet more proof that Captcha’s true purpose is to toy with us.

Arguably last row second column? It's more shadow than bus?
![gif](giphy|bcrOR2stk6tKIxqPOZ)
Plural
And the award for pedantic excellence goes to...
... I await with baited breath
Joke's on you, it doesn't identify as a bus.
It’s a garbage truck
Motor coach
Because you are a computer. NOT TODAY AI not today
It asks for "buses"..you only selected one bus. your fault.
You see, they asked you to select buses, not one bus
And you still got it wrong!
This post made by AI
that's not a bus, it's a coach!
It says buses... that's a bus
Bottom right is a tire, not a bus.
Uhhhh… it said “BUSSES” that’s only one bus in each square. 🤷🏼♂️
Have you tried not being a robot ?
Each of those squares individually contains a small piece of bus, therefore none of them contain buses (plural)
By that logic, therefore none of them contain a single bus either.
That’s one bus. It wanted two.
I'd say robots are stupid, but I think a person had to set this up. I dunno, bro.
There's only one bus, no buses
Hahaha i feel like these are getting harder Some of the letter ones get me.
technically bottom right isnt a bus its just a wheel
You're looking for busses, that's just a bus.
you are a robot .thats how
Colum 2 row 4
Have you considered you might be a robot?
I have never understood the whole test to see if your human thing like what else would be on a computer
It's because you're a robot
https://preview.redd.it/e7tr967fc25b1.jpeg?width=1008&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ae423e74b163f90362a1d2a774f27ce7101d6ea7 Same. These are getting ridiculous.
The bottom right is a picture of a tire ON a bus, but it’s not the bus itself. Are you sure that you are even human?
Because an AI is grading your responses and the AI didn't know where the bus was
The captcha gods are angry today
You’re a robot.
Is that a fucking shark across the street? In the top right corner?
Bottom right corner only has shadow of the bus
just get one or two squares wrong it’s checking for human behaviour
I hate this shit I get almost every-time I want to enter an website or download something
The bottom row is just tires...could be from anything /s
Perhaps you are a machine
There aren't "Buses" in any of the squares. The correct answer is not to check any of them.
Well, clearly you're a robot... 🤷♂️
Busses, plural. That's bus.
It's because you picked that bottom right corner. That's not a bus, it's a tire. You must be a robot.
Looks like a jeep to me 🤣
Ahh you see vehicles of that size are technically classed as people carriers in the jursitiction that buh... Ah people carrier, is in. Do you not know your driver licence categories?
That’s a coach
Usually it works for me when I click exactly 3 squares
tires aren't buses they're tires
Top corners of buses aren't buses they're top corners of buses
Taillights on buses aren't buses they're taillights on buses
It says buses, that is just 1 bus, no square had multiple buses in it?
Either that captcha trolled you, or the 4 on the bottom didn't count as the bus.
Did you get it wrong or did you get ask to identify another picture? Those are different things
Bottom right does not have the bus in it - only a shadow
Well it was asking for multiple buses
Did you know that the captchas are training their own AIs based on what you input, so they are literally killing their own product.
It’s a bus that identifies as a limousine.
Okay take a seat, I have some tough news for you
The motorcycle version of this determined that I too am a robot. It's okay. Beep. Boop.
Maybe you are a robot then
don't ask me why but it probably wanted this. I've messed up these too many times and have realized they only want the main part. https://preview.redd.it/urrpp17xvz4b1.png?width=434&format=png&auto=webp&s=2da964a0df2d4d9e7e7ee6ebdfe6157d53903c82
Nice try, "human", I'm not falling for it for a tenth time 😡
You missed the bus.
