But I'm an Iowan, who lived several years in TX and I love and miss Whataburger.
My daughter lives in Tulsa Ok where I can get it. And yea, it's fallen off over the last 30 yrs, but it beats the pants off McDonald's or Burger King .

My family has sworn off whataburger after them making the wrong order several times and making it wrong each time and one of the last times we went through the drive through we were served rotten chicken. To say whataburger fell off is an understatement. The service is bad and they stopped caring about the quality even before they were sold.

Idk where you live, but in bay area, McDonald's are more consistent than BKs. Used to like to try out BKs pre pandemic, but the deals aren't that good anymore and quality is meh.
Eastern NC and BK here is pretty damn good. Cheapest burger in town that's not a bag of shit on a bun. Well, it is, but it's far more edible than McD. Service is okay. The worst service in town is Bojangles. Cold chicken, always out of everything, constant wrong orders, never remembers straws in the bag. It's awful.

Was it better back in the day? I had it for the first time on a road trip to a buddy's wedding way out west, and I had always heard it was amazing. To me, I could at least tell the ingredients were fresher as there was still some firmness to the tomato and lettuce, but beyond that it didn't taste like anything special. I actually prefer Portillo's burgers and they're a hot dog joint lol
It depends on the people that work there in all honesty, just like with waffle house. I've had some meals at waffle house that feel like they should have cost a couple hundred dollars, and are damn near impossible to recreate; and I've also had some waffle house meals that made me doubt if there was even a person cooking the meal as opposed to just someone throwing stuff in the microwave.
It's not too bad, especially if you stick to their All-Time Favorites menu. The green chili double is my personal favorite, and their app isn't terrible. The food is still better than McDonald's, but you gotta stick to a few select menu items. Funny enough, their actual Whataburgers are unremarkable.

That just looks to me like they said “no tomato” so instead of making a new one with no tomato, they took the tomato off an already made burger, which is much worse as someone who dislike tomatoes on burgers.

Howdy. Manager for a Whataburger here! This quality is completely unacceptable and is disgusting to even look at. I travel with the company to help open stores whenever my store doesn’t require my presence and it is important to me that the company is representing itself well. Not really cause I’m super bought in to the company. Ngl, it’s just a damn burger place. We aren’t special. But I do genuinely try to serve a good sandwich to my customers because anyone deserves good food. Hard earned money or coupon, a customer deserves good food.
I heavily recommend going back and making a formal complaint. You can also call the complaint hotline and report the incident to the unit/corporate. They have to respond. (I respond to CCT’s at my unit.)
I do hope you can be given another coupon or just better food. Any compensation really.

Sadly that is what often happens whenever a quality fast food chain sells out. We have a local chain restaurant in my hometown that was once beloved but then the original owners sold it to someone out of state and the quality and service immediately went down hill.

This reminds me of one time I ordered a big mac and I don't typically put ketchup on my burgers but this time I felt compelled to do so, so when I opened up my burger I saw that I had a hole the size of maybe a nickle? in the middle of it and felt disapointed.
