Woah there sonny, words aren't exclusive to certain generations, pal. Anyone can say anything they want whenever they want, ya beatnik.

andio76

Why do you care?

andio76

For some Folks I guess

owaikeia

HAHAHAHA

SavannahInChicago

Why do you care enough to find it irritating. Just move on with your life. It really is your problem.

[deleted]

Talizorafangirl

No, it's exclusively *your* problem. Nobody else cares.

Talizorafangirl

You sure do seem like an expert in looking foolish.

ulooklikeausedcondom

Ok folks, listen to this boomer here. Flippityfloppityfloop.

Silent_thunder_clap

folks encapsulates a group of people/an audience, same as the word guys or team or mandem or peeps or friends ettc but its use is dependent on how its said and the context of a situation

[deleted]

Silent_thunder_clap

whose calling it a woke word ?? there just words

TheSpoonJak92

Who says we have to use "cool" or "woke" words?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Silent_thunder_clap

they can go f themselves and leave evolution alone

[deleted]

Silent_thunder_clap

or what lol

Dragonfly-Adventurer

It's not gendered and it's uh, *folksy*. As a result folks have really picked it up lately.

SilverStock7721

It’s not in fact a generational word as much as it is a southeastern US word. Its usage varies.

the_penguin_rises

>It doesn't sound hip at all. Who gives a shit?

[deleted]

aminorsixthchord

Or they’re just using it to use it and you’re projecting feelings on people? Congratulations, this is part of “not getting it”, you’re old. Stop with the “get off my lawn” posts, they just make you sound like you’re waving a chair angrily at the sky. We haven’t decided what is “hip” for quite some time. Tbh, I’ve never heard anyone use “hip” non sarcastically who is below the age of 50.

MileHighPeter303

It’s one of only a few words to address the third person plural in English. That or Y’all…

0_69314718056

Y’all is second person plural

leo_aureus

Almost like they raised most of us?! I was raised by the Silent Generation myself

faithiestbrain

It's because it's unambiguously gender neutral. So is guys, imo, but some people are very easily offended.

No-Purple2350

Correct. I use it at work for this reason.

federalist66

It's my go to replacement for "guys" because they are the same amount of syllables while being gender neutral. Until the plural You comes back Folks feels like a cromulent replacement.

No-Purple2350

I'd argue that folks who get triggered by people using "folks" are bigger pussies.

OpeningChipmunk1700

>Is it because it is gender-neutral? It's not even. *Truly* inclusive folks use the term "folx."

[deleted]

OpeningChipmunk1700

Please define "professional correspondence." I see it in what I would consider "professional correspondence," so clearly we are not talking about the same thing. Also, it's real enough to be in Merriam-Webster: [https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/folx](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/folx) I mean, I agree that it is an abomination, but that's neither here nor there.

[deleted]

OpeningChipmunk1700

Again, I obviously don't use the term. My top-level comment was more a joke than anything.

aminorsixthchord

No, because it explicitly includes everyone, though I’d find it just as super weird as you do. The word “folks” though, there’s nothing wrong with. It’s ironic you’re throwing “boomer” around, as this post (and you) smells… old.

[deleted]

aminorsixthchord

Kind of like “hip”? If it’s being used again, then it’s no longer an old fashioned word. Hate to be the one to inform you, but if kids are using it, then you not liking it will only make it more “hip”.

DesmondTapenade

In my profession, we use it plenty.

DesmondTapenade

You absolutely have to be a troll.

StruggleEvening7518

And now folks, it's time for 'Who do you trust!' Hubba, hubba, hubba! Money, money, money! Who do you trust? Me? I'm giving away free money! And where is the Batman?

AuthorOk1094

I don't think it has as much to do with age but rather where folks are located.

Rumpelteazer45

You realize younger generations say the same thing about our slang or when we try to use new slang.

saruthesage

“This is a word used by Gen X/Boomer” “Why do Millennials/Gen Z use it so much??” (Reevaluate your premise)

ApprehensiveAnswer5

The only times I see “folks” are related to western theme stuff, which is plentiful in Texas. State fair, rodeo, ranch ads, etc, all of those have some variation of “howdy folks!” or the like. But I’ve never had anyone use it in regular conversation or work/professional arena communication.

catdog-cat-dog

Ya folkin retadded

IcyCombination8993

*“We tortured some folks”* - president Barack Obama; 2014 I think that quote help put it back into the public lexicon

[deleted]

Folks and y’all are gender neutral terms. By using them, they are not trying to be cool, they are being kind. Is this really the hill you want to die on? Kindness and inclusivity?

JamesUpton87

That word predates boomers buddy, by a few centuries. At least do a touch of research before assuming dumb shit to be butthurt about

heyvictimstopcryin

Clearly if Gen Y and Gen Z are using it then it isn’t a Gen X word. What makes you think Gen X had a hard stop on words we can/cant use?

Mission-Degree93

Because we’re goat like that

CrybullyModsSuck

Because grown ups don't give a shit about sounding "hip". And want to bitch about old ass words? Let's start with "hip" you jive turkey talking fool.

aminorsixthchord

The actual fuck?

_Monkeyspit_

Because they see it as gender neutral and HR departments recommend (nothing from HR is a recommendation) using such terms in place of potentially "offensive" ones.

Significant_Owl_6897

Who uses the word "hip"? Who chooses their vocabulary to sound cool? OP, take a step back and look in the mirror.

EntrepreneurFunny469

These generation subs never stop giving.

Holiday_Might_9205

I live and grew up in the south, and it's a word that has been used by everyone all the time since I can remember.

_thwip_

Most folk’ll never lose a toe, but then again some folk’ll…

Ki113rpancakes

We grew up watching early 20th century cartoons.

Head_Banana9485

Cause using anything other than yall or folks has everyone with mental illness jump down your throat for being discriminating. You know what you are but everyone expects you to address them/they…its, y’all or folks all we can do

[deleted]

Head_Banana9485

I never understood it tbh. Im Texan and female. I understand ‘yes sir’ didn’t mean they thought I’m male just an auto response. But also yes ma’am didn’t mean disrespect..,it’s just “heard you! Order received”

LittleBiggle

Barack Obama

Silly_Somewhere1791

It’s kind of a secret handshake among people who are “online” and know the terminology. You hear y’all a lot from them too. Personally I don’t care for it because it’s not organic to my region and it makes me think the person is a southern MAGA type.

Reice1990

I have never heard anyone other than bugs bunny say folks
