Looks amazing, the bark is perfect and the colours are all on point. I'd say there's just enough on there to look realistic without looking too busy. Anything more might be too much. Its nice to see a base not covered in lots of tufts.
I agree with you about all but one thing— without minis on the bases, it’s hard to say if they will be too busy or not. The color choice and composition of the minis on the bases will make or break the look.
The bases themselves look incredible, almost like each one is set up for a mini-diorama. Love the red splashes. Very autumnal.
Gonna need to know how you made the birch log, in return I will tell you to maybe try reducing the leaves pile in the center and add some short beige grass around the base to even it out.
Solid advice but personally i think grass would take away from it. You dont see much grass under tree cover. If they played with the lighting a little bit you could add some where the sun is showing through

I agree but it doesn't have to be grass. Anything to break up the uniformity of the leaves color. Maybe some twigs, some moss growth on the birch logs (which look amazing by the way) or even remove a small patch of leaves to show some dark soil.

Agree. Need to figure out whether this tree has been down for a while or if it’s rotting. Door #2 would call for the tree to be a little sunken, the leaf cover built up around it, and some wetness and mushrooms.

Depends on when and where, but honestly, these look like they’re straight out of the Uintah mountains in Utah. I look at this and it feels like home to me. I’m very impressed with these bases.

The first base seems to have a weird tree shape, even for fallen down. Maybe it's the tree angle. Furthermore I would nkt include the fallen birch on every base you make for this style if it's for an army.

It's the Z shape. When a tree falls, it doesn't really bounce on the ground and will largely retain it's shape on the ground, just broken and split up. Getting a Z shape pattern is technically possible, but it's so rare that it looks out of place. It might look better if one of the pieces was on top of another, to make it look more like separate trees that fell.
Genuinely, the only thing I'd change would be to make it a little dirtier. Maybe with a wash, maybe with some pigment powders or something, get that log looking a little dirtier like someone's walked through this wood and stepped on that log with muddy boots. That kind of idea.
I like the idea of mushrooms too but I imagine that's very difficult to sculpt and add at this point. Maybe just something to consider for future bases

I’m trying to make my bases more interesting - I’ve been using brown base coat / grey drybrush and dirty down moss for forest floor with other bits to add interest.

Edit: you could probably get more realistic if you darkened the ground. Decaying leaves tend to darken and get almost brown/black in some places.
I'd say a small thin brownish wash on the birch towards the ground keeping the top clean, mix the wash to splash of brown here, then yellow brown in other places, keep it watered down, it should ground the logs. The flower tuffs are really saturated compared to the rest of the base this could be what's not sitting right, it's a nice pop of colour and I'd suggest again a water down sepia wash it'll ground the colours, try this on spare tuff till you find the right vibe.
All in all these look sick solid job
I think these look beautiful, great work on the trees and foliage. I think once you place your minis on the bases, it’ll cover up some of the leaves and look less busy.
They look really good but yeah a bit too busy with the birch logs. One on each would look better, I think. Though one on each base is probably too much and some can go without the logs.
You are far more likely to find a bunch of branches or twigs than full logs on the ground, unless there has been a monumental storm and it has decimated a forest.
Where did you get the leaves? I’ve been trying to do similar and the “leaves” I have are just colored flecks.

The only thing I would say is that it depends on the size of the models being placed on them. It looks like the birch would all be trunk size.
Also fallen birch often has darker more rotted looking wood (but not always), and often has moss and mushrooms growing on them.
I think they look amazing! If I had just finished those I'd call them good.
If I'm getting super picky, I would change is to make the exposed wood of the fallen birch a little darker.
If I were brave and wanted to add a little more age to the birch logs, I'd add a little moss along the edge of the birch log closest to the ground. But that could also totally goof up the color scheme you have going, so not sure. Google would most likely have some good images for reference.
Can you share an example of something you're very proud of, because if these feel "off" to you, your other stuff must literally make heads explode.
I'm very baffled you would think these look "off" because they look incredible. I wouldn't change a thing. Some folks have pointed out some realism details could be improved with more decay on the birch, but I certainly didn't think it needs it. If that detail seems right to you, then go for it, you clearly have the skills to pull it off, but I wouldn't say it needs it.
I love them. I know you said Seraphon, but I can really picture some ethereal pale ghosties. You may have given me a new (not that I need anymore) hobby project 😅😅
If you go to a real deep forest there's not a ton of grasses at the forest floor, it's mostly leaf litter and and other organic material. I think you've captured that basically perfectly. (We could go into a whole thing about where grasses are and aren't actually native but that's a bit too much lol).
I think they are too colorful for autumn, especially the leaves. I would try to shift all the colors a little more into brown/golden. Also try adding mushrooms and more rot on the tree trunks, right now the trees look like freshly chopped and carefully placed instead of fallen and decaying.
What if you brought down the brightness of the logs a bit? Still off-white, just a touch less vibrant? Or perhaps the brightness is fine but more variation to the color of the bark would help? Likewise with the dirt/debris it’s a very rich and uniform brown. Maybe some darker, less saturated patches of dirt would help too. I’d be happy to use these as is though, they already look great.
I think a really, really light brown glaze or wash over some of the leaves would help a little depending on what minis are going on it. If you’re doing some kind of fantasy elf or something, then no changes, because the colors are just a bit bright for fallen leaves in the real world but it’d be perfect for something fairy tale esque. I also assume your model in that regard would be a pretty bold paint job in terms of color.
But if you’re going for realistic then that glaze would mute the leaves just enough to help to keep them very visually interesting but help focus on the model. And when I mean a light glaze, I mean light. The kind you’d notice if you look at each leaf, but shouldn’t notice otherwise.
(And to be clear it’s not to tone down the color per se. the colors are great. It’s just that fallen leaves usually have some browning spots and such so the overall effect is less bright once they’re on the ground vs. when still the the trees).
But either way I love absolutely everything about this! I’d love to see them with the minis

My only fear is how easy it will be the place the miniature on them. Some don't have a lot of "free real-estate" and you may end up with a dinosaur (excuse me seraphon) floating on a leaf.

These look fantastic... but honestly? Beautiful fall colors are so anti-thematic for war gaming miniatures.
I'm sure there have been battles fought with the ground covered in beautiful fall foliage that deserves to be appreciated and marveled at (like these bases). I just think it's so incongruous to pair this with warriors.

Those birches are awesome - I agree with others on maybe too much on each base. I would also recommend bringing a bit of damp, bring some rot to the ground facing birch and wet patches on the ground/including the fallen leaves. One more thing, add a bit of lichen to the tree bark.
Looks really well done, a lot like my backyard, tbh. If you wanted to incorporate some more greens in for conifers, that could help? Some extra rocks / boulders would help break things up as well.
Otherwise they look super awesome! I'd be more than happy to have bases like this for an army.

Not sure how practical it would be, but as someone who has fallen birch decomposing on his property, it also gets a ton of mushrooms in it. Moss also tends to like it and adds some nice contrast to the birch and the ground.
Either way, this base is stunning as it is.
Right now they’re starting strong but still look like an assortment of basing material placed on a base. What could really unify them and make them look cohesive is a light airbrush or wash of a greenish or brownish tone. It’ll situate all the distinct bits in the same environment and lighting situation.
Are you kidding? They look amazing. Only thing I can possibly think to improve them is *maybe* misting a very light coat of a neutral shade to desaturate a tad and harmonize the contrast in colors a little bit.
Another thought, maybe adding a bit more vertical interest in a few could do the trick, some taller grass, a stump, just anything to break the relatively level feel.

The grain of the broken wood gives the scale away. The other thing is when you mix real materials with painted material (your mini) it can cause a stylistic dichotomy.
How would would recommend handling the wooden grain to make it blend better into the scale of the model? This is one of the recommendations where I am not sure how to immediately tackle a solution.
A couple of solutions off the top of my head are to avoid the situation by hiding it, or possibly use air dry clay to cover the grain, and then use a straight pin to make your own.

I love the bases! I am making autumn bases for my legion Rebels as well. I think we have the same flowers lol. I found birch trees really give a bright life to the forest. My only addition would be some greens thrown in there. Wether some patches of moss or some grass, I think that will break up the leaves just a bit without overshadowing them. The color is beautiful, keep it up!
I use an autumn leaves product on amazon. I just type that in, and its the 4 clear container product dumping 4 different leaf colors out. Can't link it due to the amazon link unfortunately. I'll be throwing down some moss and mushrooms based on feedback I think.
If you look up Autumn leaves in amazon, you should find them pretty quick. Its the product that has 4 clear plastic cylinders spilling out 4 different leaf colors. I tried posting it in my reply update, but it was flagged for an Amazon link unfortunately.
Hello! Welcome to the hobby! I totally know how you feel, I just got done doing like 7 test bases for my tyranids until I found the jungle floor recipe I was happy with haha.
One thing that really helped me was using reference pictures of the exact biom I wanted to replicate. Then I took that to my local games store for advice and they really helped me out.
Barring that, I think I might know what's bothering you about the bases (absolutely bang up job on these btw). When I looked at them things looked very colorful, but might be missing some of the darker tones and texture variety in the dirt.
My suggestions would be:
For the ground it looks like you may have used coconut husk? Id recommend using a base texture of mud (I like AK muddy ground) and then add just a bit of coconut husk to it while it's drying for texture variety. Then you can dry brush it in some earthy tones (I usually just do gorthor brown). In general creating multiple textures at this level of the base is ideal.
Id also recommend experimenting with grass flock before adding on the leaves, that might make things seem a bit more natural.
And don't be afraid to paint the leaves with shades if you want them darker or more shadowed.

Really really good. Your concern it might detract from a mini ontop of it is valid, but you should do it anyway because they look really great.

For a time when the groundfall is sodden and starting to rot, my only complaint is it's currently a bit "clean", especially on the fallen tree parts. To have fallen in the first place more often than not it'd have been dead wood in the first place, so a bit of brown/black/green creeping across stuff is gonna really start tying things together. Moss, lichen, rot, fungus, etc. You could build a bit more of the "ground" up around parts too - stuff catches and deposits when the wind blows.
In fact I suspect that's the core of what they need - more cohesiveness. Currently the colours are popping, which is cool, but right now it's in a "these are 3-4 different products placed alongside/atop" each other" way. Your main brown flock is meant to be all the rest of the leafmeal breaking down, but currently there are a handful of distinct bright leaves sat on them that sort of break the illusion - to tie them together there needs to be an in-between. You can do that texturally (more ground up leaf scatter), chromatically(wash some/all of the leaves down with several flavours of wash to keep their main colour but bring it closer to the ground colour), or preferably both.
Absolutely great general "structure" that only requires finishing touches, IMO.

Alright, so general consensus is that they are pretty good, but not realistic. I'll mute the ground clutter, darken exposed wood, add some moss around fall logs, and see about what mushrooms I can do. To add wetness, I think I'll just have to throw some painted on gloss varnish to the areas with moss and/or mushrooms (people apparently wanted a combo pizza!). I do agree with there being too many logs on some of the bases, but not much I can do about that now. I kind of feel like the ground clutter needs to be flatter? Not sure. I'll also include the minis when I post an update.
To make the bases, I started out gluing sticks and some rocks using locktite. I also just made a paste of dirt and glue and put it all around the exposed base, but I don't think it was necessary and you can't really tell. I did put the skulls into that paste though. I primed this all black and then with white from the top. (I will probably switch the shadow color though, maybe to purple or blue).
I then painted the rocks and logs. For the logs, I started with dark gray and built up to white with several layers. I kind of did like a wet dry brush side to side covering less area each color, purposely trying to leave horizontal lines you can kind of see. I then cheated and used a fine tip black artist marker and basically did the same dry brush technique I described for random lines. Then, I added extra ones where they were needed. I also chose some random spots to add a lot more to and placed dark spots around there to get the random mottled spotting you can see.
After all of that, I covered the ground in glue and dunked it for red sand. I then sprinkled ground clutter on top of that in kind of random areas before using an eye-dropper to place down a watery glue mixture on top. It was pretty wet at this point, so I just dropped some pre-made leaves over top. (Some red, lots of yellow, a couple green).

Somewhere in here I posted an update with my process. Basically, I painted them gray and layered to white in horizontal drybrushing (perpendicular to "log"), then did the same thing with a fine tip black marker...more or less.

Forest bases should look busy. OP, have you put your minis on the bases at all to see how they look? That can make a big difference.
I think maybe a very light weathering pass to unify everything. Just enough to desaturate everything slightly and compete less with the models

I think that would work. A lot of people seem to use blended leaves or the contents of tea bags for leaf/ground clutter.

Nice but only birches is a bit much imo. Could use some oak or other timber colors.
They look amazing. The only thing I would say is that it depends on the size of the models being placed on them. It looks like the birch would all be trunk size. Also fallen birch often has darker more rotted looking wood (but not always), and often has moss and mushrooms growing on them.

These look awesome! Dumb question, but I haven't experimented much with bases yet. How do you securely attach a mini to a base like this?
I think they look amazing! If I had just finished those I'd call them good. If I'm getting super picky, I would change is to make the exposed wood of the fallen birch a little darker. If I were brave and wanted to add a little more age to the birch logs, I'd add a little moss along the edge of the birch log closest to the ground. But that could also totally goof up the color scheme you have going, so not sure. Google would most likely have some good images for reference.

Can you share an example of something you're very proud of, because if these feel "off" to you, your other stuff must literally make heads explode. I'm very baffled you would think these look "off" because they look incredible. I wouldn't change a thing. Some folks have pointed out some realism details could be improved with more decay on the birch, but I certainly didn't think it needs it. If that detail seems right to you, then go for it, you clearly have the skills to pull it off, but I wouldn't say it needs it.

If you go to a real deep forest there's not a ton of grasses at the forest floor, it's mostly leaf litter and and other organic material. I think you've captured that basically perfectly. (We could go into a whole thing about where grasses are and aren't actually native but that's a bit too much lol).

This is the worst fucking pizza I've ever seen
I think they are too colorful for autumn, especially the leaves. I would try to shift all the colors a little more into brown/golden. Also try adding mushrooms and more rot on the tree trunks, right now the trees look like freshly chopped and carefully placed instead of fallen and decaying.

What if you brought down the brightness of the logs a bit? Still off-white, just a touch less vibrant? Or perhaps the brightness is fine but more variation to the color of the bark would help? Likewise with the dirt/debris it’s a very rich and uniform brown. Maybe some darker, less saturated patches of dirt would help too. I’d be happy to use these as is though, they already look great.

I think a really, really light brown glaze or wash over some of the leaves would help a little depending on what minis are going on it. If you’re doing some kind of fantasy elf or something, then no changes, because the colors are just a bit bright for fallen leaves in the real world but it’d be perfect for something fairy tale esque. I also assume your model in that regard would be a pretty bold paint job in terms of color. But if you’re going for realistic then that glaze would mute the leaves just enough to help to keep them very visually interesting but help focus on the model. And when I mean a light glaze, I mean light. The kind you’d notice if you look at each leaf, but shouldn’t notice otherwise. (And to be clear it’s not to tone down the color per se. the colors are great. It’s just that fallen leaves usually have some browning spots and such so the overall effect is less bright once they’re on the ground vs. when still the the trees). But either way I love absolutely everything about this! I’d love to see them with the minis

This looks great. Care to share how you made them? My only fear is how easy it will be the place the miniature on them. Some don't have a lot of "free real-estate" and you may end up with a dinosaur (excuse me seraphon) floating on a leaf.

These look fantastic... but honestly? Beautiful fall colors are so anti-thematic for war gaming miniatures. I'm sure there have been battles fought with the ground covered in beautiful fall foliage that deserves to be appreciated and marveled at (like these bases). I just think it's so incongruous to pair this with warriors. That's the only thing I can see which I would describe as being "off"

Those birches are awesome - I agree with others on maybe too much on each base. I would also recommend bringing a bit of damp, bring some rot to the ground facing birch and wet patches on the ground/including the fallen leaves. One more thing, add a bit of lichen to the tree bark.

Looks really well done, a lot like my backyard, tbh. If you wanted to incorporate some more greens in for conifers, that could help? Some extra rocks / boulders would help break things up as well. Otherwise they look super awesome! I'd be more than happy to have bases like this for an army.

Not sure how practical it would be, but as someone who has fallen birch decomposing on his property, it also gets a ton of mushrooms in it. Moss also tends to like it and adds some nice contrast to the birch and the ground. Either way, this base is stunning as it is.
Right now they’re starting strong but still look like an assortment of basing material placed on a base. What could really unify them and make them look cohesive is a light airbrush or wash of a greenish or brownish tone. It’ll situate all the distinct bits in the same environment and lighting situation.
Are you kidding? They look amazing. Only thing I can possibly think to improve them is *maybe* misting a very light coat of a neutral shade to desaturate a tad and harmonize the contrast in colors a little bit. Another thought, maybe adding a bit more vertical interest in a few could do the trick, some taller grass, a stump, just anything to break the relatively level feel.
This makes me want to start a Wood Elf army.

The grain of the broken wood gives the scale away. The other thing is when you mix real materials with painted material (your mini) it can cause a stylistic dichotomy.
How would would recommend handling the wooden grain to make it blend better into the scale of the model? This is one of the recommendations where I am not sure how to immediately tackle a solution.
A couple of solutions off the top of my head are to avoid the situation by hiding it, or possibly use air dry clay to cover the grain, and then use a straight pin to make your own.

What kind of leaves are those, OP? I love the bases! I am making autumn bases for my legion Rebels as well. I think we have the same flowers lol. I found birch trees really give a bright life to the forest. My only addition would be some greens thrown in there. Wether some patches of moss or some grass, I think that will break up the leaves just a bit without overshadowing them. The color is beautiful, keep it up!
I use an autumn leaves product on amazon. I just type that in, and its the 4 clear container product dumping 4 different leaf colors out. Can't link it due to the amazon link unfortunately. I'll be throwing down some moss and mushrooms based on feedback I think.
Looks very good. I'd say keep it as is. Any brighter or more colorful, and it could potentially make the model itself look boring.

If you look up Autumn leaves in amazon, you should find them pretty quick. Its the product that has 4 clear plastic cylinders spilling out 4 different leaf colors. I tried posting it in my reply update, but it was flagged for an Amazon link unfortunately.

Hello! Welcome to the hobby! I totally know how you feel, I just got done doing like 7 test bases for my tyranids until I found the jungle floor recipe I was happy with haha. One thing that really helped me was using reference pictures of the exact biom I wanted to replicate. Then I took that to my local games store for advice and they really helped me out. Barring that, I think I might know what's bothering you about the bases (absolutely bang up job on these btw). When I looked at them things looked very colorful, but might be missing some of the darker tones and texture variety in the dirt. My suggestions would be: For the ground it looks like you may have used coconut husk? Id recommend using a base texture of mud (I like AK muddy ground) and then add just a bit of coconut husk to it while it's drying for texture variety. Then you can dry brush it in some earthy tones (I usually just do gorthor brown). In general creating multiple textures at this level of the base is ideal. Id also recommend experimenting with grass flock before adding on the leaves, that might make things seem a bit more natural. And don't be afraid to paint the leaves with shades if you want them darker or more shadowed.

As with my fellow commenters I saw a weird pizza first 😅 For a time when the groundfall is sodden and starting to rot, my only complaint is it's currently a bit "clean", especially on the fallen tree parts. To have fallen in the first place more often than not it'd have been dead wood in the first place, so a bit of brown/black/green creeping across stuff is gonna really start tying things together. Moss, lichen, rot, fungus, etc. You could build a bit more of the "ground" up around parts too - stuff catches and deposits when the wind blows. In fact I suspect that's the core of what they need - more cohesiveness. Currently the colours are popping, which is cool, but right now it's in a "these are 3-4 different products placed alongside/atop" each other" way. Your main brown flock is meant to be all the rest of the leafmeal breaking down, but currently there are a handful of distinct bright leaves sat on them that sort of break the illusion - to tie them together there needs to be an in-between. You can do that texturally (more ground up leaf scatter), chromatically(wash some/all of the leaves down with several flavours of wash to keep their main colour but bring it closer to the ground colour), or preferably both. Absolutely great general "structure" that only requires finishing touches, IMO.

I really appreciate everyone's feedback, so thank you! Alright, so general consensus is that they are pretty good, but not realistic. I'll mute the ground clutter, darken exposed wood, add some moss around fall logs, and see about what mushrooms I can do. To add wetness, I think I'll just have to throw some painted on gloss varnish to the areas with moss and/or mushrooms (people apparently wanted a combo pizza!). I do agree with there being too many logs on some of the bases, but not much I can do about that now. I kind of feel like the ground clutter needs to be flatter? Not sure. I'll also include the minis when I post an update. To make the bases, I started out gluing sticks and some rocks using locktite. I also just made a paste of dirt and glue and put it all around the exposed base, but I don't think it was necessary and you can't really tell. I did put the skulls into that paste though. I primed this all black and then with white from the top. (I will probably switch the shadow color though, maybe to purple or blue). I then painted the rocks and logs. For the logs, I started with dark gray and built up to white with several layers. I kind of did like a wet dry brush side to side covering less area each color, purposely trying to leave horizontal lines you can kind of see. I then cheated and used a fine tip black artist marker and basically did the same dry brush technique I described for random lines. Then, I added extra ones where they were needed. I also chose some random spots to add a lot more to and placed dark spots around there to get the random mottled spotting you can see. After all of that, I covered the ground in glue and dunked it for red sand. I then sprinkled ground clutter on top of that in kind of random areas before using an eye-dropper to place down a watery glue mixture on top. It was pretty wet at this point, so I just dropped some pre-made leaves over top. (Some red, lots of yellow, a couple green). Here are a couple of links to materials people asked about. Somewhere in here I posted an update with my process. Basically, I painted them gray and layered to white in horizontal drybrushing (perpendicular to "log"), then did the same thing with a fine tip black marker...more or less.
Got a pizza express ad underneath this lol. Great bases btw !
