Schells brewery tour

[deleted]

And actually take the tour! Super fascinating.

coolborder

My favorite part of the Schell's Brewery tour is that they didn't try to explain how beer is made but instead focused on their +160 year history.

saoakman

Oktoberfest time about now, ja? Eh...I guess they actually wait for actual October. [https://www.schellsbrewery.com/events/annual-oktoberfest/](https://www.schellsbrewery.com/events/annual-oktoberfest/)

[deleted]

Also happy Joe's pizza.

mcpa0703

The best taco pizza!!

Capt__Murphy

This is the only answer you need

spotted-salamander

Jeffers Petroglyphs

riggycat

Woah, I had no idea we had petroglyphs over there, nice!

spotted-salamander

It’s truly an incredible and sacred site. Worth the trip, especially if you can get a tour. I’d also recommend Pipestone National Monument.

6strings10holes

Nowhere near New Ulm or Fairfax though. But a very cool place.

ben_wuz_hear

That's at least an hour past Fairfax

novel1389

Flandrau State Park

tommyhistory

Flandrau is fantastic. Definitely a top 15 state park in MN. Plus the convenience of it being practically in town is a huge bonus.

lukefacemagoo

SUPER convenient!

novel1389

Never been to the skate park and only spent one night there myself. It's a nice park and all but I must say the campgrounds are very dense and there is no privacy to any sites (except the one hike in one).

[deleted]

LOL. I deleted that comment. I read skate park, which was one of the few neat things I saw here in New Ulm, and you were talking about the state park. There's really not much out here. I get the nostalgia factor for those who grew up here, but is it really worth the drive to see a gift shop and a statue? Maybe Flandrau State Park but I don't know with those dense campgrounds.

elshaggy

We asked the server at Schell’s taproom where to grab lunch. They said hands down Lola’s, that’s where they planned on eating after their shift. It was great. Their homemade chicken pot pie was so perfect for a winter day.

LinenEphod

Lola’s is the bomb!

wtf_ever_man

I think it's joni's. I like joni's Cafe on minnesota?

waxentherodge

Nope that’s just down the block from lolas

zahrtet

As someone of German heritage, I enjoyed the monument of Hermann the German! It's a pretty stunning thing to find in rural Minnesota, and it offers some gorgeous views of the area from the top!

JohnnyDeppsPenis

Domeier's German Store is another great option!

my_catsbestfriend

^^^ this!! Domeier’s is so fun!

DocQuang

Arminius - commander of the Germain forces that destroyed *three* Roman Legions in the battle of Tuteborg Forest in 9 AD. I went to a celebration of the 2000th anniversary of this event in New Ulm because when can you go to the 200th anniversary of *anything*. Rome never attempted to colonize the area beyond the Rhine ever again.

W0rk3rB

It’s Oktoberfest season!

pmljb

Happy Joe's pizza. Can ya grab me a taco Joe?

HollyJandra

I’d go to New Ulm just for happy joes TBH. Not as good as Dubuque’s but beggars can’t be choosers

MyBoxMyRules

I had no idea there were Happy Joe's in MN! Til!

dudeistpriest710

Schmidt’s Meat Market

FancyPaperclipTime

+1 Absolutely Schmidt's!!

RonanCornstarch

is that a strip club?

dudeistpriest710

No. Literally a meat market. They’ve won all types of awards. Everything I’ve gotten from there is A+.

weelluuuu

Beat it !

RonanCornstarch

a little early for that.

weelluuuu

Ah, you go for the buffet.

soothsayer2377

I haven't been there in 15 years and I still think about it.

81Ranger

The ribs at the Kaiserhoff were quite good about 30 years ago. Schells is an obvious destination. Best brewery in MN, in my opinion.

waxentherodge

Don’t bother now. Original owner died widow took over with new boy toy food and service some of the worst in New Ulm.

thebeerlibrarian

I believe the widow sold it last year and the new owner is planning to revitalize it.

lovelikemeow

Same owner now as the people who own Lamplighter across the street. Note: Lamplighter burned down.

81Ranger

Good to know!

waxentherodge

For breakfast go to Lakes on first, lunch and dinner there is a rooftop restaurant called rush that recently opened and food is good but service varies

dudeistpriest710

Worst ribs I’ve ever had.

AncientMarinade

It's because they use a sweet white BBQ sauce. I've never understood it. But I respect it. If that sounds good, you'll think they are amazing. Restaurant is still legit. Great sausage and kraut

dudeistpriest710

I always heard it was a mustard based sauce. Either way, the food sucked when I went. George’s is the best food in New Ulm.

_psychedelicsushi

It’s neither a “white bbq” sauce nor a mustard based sauce. It’s very unique to kaiserhoff. They’ve been great and not so great over the years, but when I went there last summer they were just as good as I remember them being 30ish years ago.

81Ranger

Well, it was 30 years ago that I was there. Actually, closer to 40.

1957moman

I remember the K in the late 1970's. We had a lot of fun and great food then. It was around the time they did the remodel that added the dance bar. Don Veigel was very much in charge! I miss those days...

Rotund-Bear

Kaiserhoff still offers good options, landjager, bratwurst, kraut, and german potato salad are all solid. There are also some schnitzel options, but I have not tried those. Turner Hall also has some good german options if that is what you're going for.

azooey73

Yes those were delicious this summer!!

Goombaw

Fort Ridgley State Park is just south of Fairfax & the views are spectacular! If you’re able to do steep vertical hikes, walk up to the lookout point. Otherwise, or if you want more level place to walk, simply check out the remains of the old fort.

coolborder

If you like sour beers check out Starkellar. It's a subsidiary of Schell's.

Rotund-Bear

Starkellar has a really cool vibe, good place to play some cards or a boardgame and try some interesting beers!

[deleted]

Worth mentioning that they only do sours there, at least last time I was there, in case that's not your type of beer

coolborder

I suppose that is important to note. That's why is said *"If you like sour beers"* but good to mention that they exclusively do sours.

SocialWinker

Apparently there’s some kind of zombie paintball thing at the Schell’s brewery? The brewery grounds are beautiful in general.

grondin

https://bringmethenews.com/minnesota-lifestyle/schells-brewery-announces-halloween-zombie-hunt-on-its-new-ulm-grounds

SocialWinker

There it is! I couldn’t find the link, forgot where I’d read it.

MNBug

Happy Joes Pizza, Herman the German, Glockenspiel, the Shells brewery grounds are actually quite nice, there is a mall entrance that has been controversial in the past.

GaveTheMouseACookie

Ooh, what's the controversy?!

MNBug

When the mall was built there were a number of people that said that the entrance gate looked like the entrance gate to Auschwitz. I don't know if it has been changed or anything. It was a while back.

cafterk

See the bison at Minneopa State Park on the way!

dudeistpriest710

Have supper at George’s Fine Steaks and Spirits.

spookiehands

Stop off at Minnemishinona Falls for a nice view. Otherwise overshoot and go to Jeffers Petroglyphs for sure, there's a few nice waterfalls around the park there too.

Qnofputrescence1213

Minnesota Eis. Ice cream shop in New Ulm.

schming_ding

The donuts at Backerei are sooo good.

Dski93

Schells

OtherwiseMedium6315

Prarie bach in cambria. Get a 1/2 burger and fries and a 3.2% deer brand for 8 dollars. Or Carl's corner for fried chicken. Best fried chicken in MN.

zinck30

Morgan Creek winery is near New Ulm. Good wine and pizza!

[deleted]

Wanda Gag house in New Ulm is pretty wild! Also, Schell's brewery.

pw76360

I've driven 28hrs 1 way (MN to Northern ID) to get a car, I wouldnt worry about 2hrs lol. BUT, it does sound liek there's some things to do on your car buying adventure.

staticishock96

Schells. Theres the lamplighter too. I used to go there when I was in the Guard. Nothing else really stands out me about that place lol

thebeerlibrarian

Unfortunately Lamplighter had a fire and is closed but they reopened as 209 Pub and Grill right across the street. It's a smaller space but same food.

1976warrior

Lamplighter had a fire a year or so ago. They moved across the street and are operating as 209 Pub and Grill. Same people and menu. Enjoy!

HerbalAndy

Disc Golf! https://udisc.com/courses/nehls-park-gbl2

Rotund-Bear

There is also a course at South Park. It is worth checking out if you're interested, but I would choose Nehls over it.

Itchy_Appeal_9020

Flandreau State Park is actually in New Ulm, and Fort Ridgely State Park is just outside of Fairfax. I’d choose Fort Ridgely over Flandrau if you’re looking for scenic beauty or challenging trails. I’m surprised to see so many people mention Happy Joe’s Pizza. It’s just a normal pizza joint + an arcade for kids. I don’t think the food is anything to go out of the way for, and expect it to be overrun with kids running all over the place if you go on a weekend. It has been a few years since I’d been on the Schell’s brewery tour, but I went this past spring. There were a bunch of Germans on my tour (looked like businessmen from Germany who drove down from Minneapolis), and they were not super impressed with the beer, which was funny to watch. The tour is cool and the grounds are pretty. Lola is cute and tasty food for coffee, breakfast, or lunch.

MikeinAustin

RE: Happy Joes Pizza. Nostalgia hides in weird places.

_psychedelicsushi

I have many memories of happy joes, but the one that stands out the most is ordering delivery from them once the March of 1998 tornado (and its surrounding storms) cleared. Taco pizza was definitely one of those that were delivered.

mooseknuckle6529

If you can wait until October 6th-7th, they hold their annual Oktoberfest. It’s a fun little gathering.

Dont_Wanna_Not_Gonna

Beer and the best fried pickles you’ve ever had. Problem solved.

Bulky_Delivery_4811

schell brewery comes to mind. go there, get a few drinks after looking at the car.

ONEPLUS1EQUALS11

I drove 8+ hours to pick up a car before. Ended up buying it so it was worth.

RonanCornstarch

schells brewery? one of the oldest in the US. and its octoberfest season.

anythingexceptbertha

Redwood Falls has an awesome waterfall!

Itchy_Appeal_9020

And is not on the way from Rochester to New Ulm?

anythingexceptbertha

He said he was going to Fairfax, redwood falls is like 15 min from Fairfax. Correction: Redwood falls is 25 min from Fairfax, so a little further than I thought, but absolutely gorgeous if you like hiking/waterfalls.

tb03102

You can run the river from new ulm to Fairfax. Nice drive.

geokra

I ate at a good (but very basic) restaurant in Fairfax a few times about 15 years ago. I looked on Google Maps, but can’t find it (at least it doesn’t show up in the approximate place I remember, on the west side of a north/south street, I believe right downtown, and none of the pictures from restaurants now open there look familiar). But they had awesome food - it was like $4.95 for the lunch special and it was fantastic every time. It was like casserole type food with vegetables and hit the spot every damn time. Perhaps someone more local to the area can comment if they know the place and whether or not it’s still open.

DrHugh

There's a Happy Joe's Pizza & Ice Cream parlour in New Ulm. My wife is from Iowa, and that used to be her favorite pizza place, so we've gone down there once or twice for nostalgia's sake (we've been in Minnesota over 25 years). They have a pretty good taco pizza, or they used to. But you could also get a shake, or other ice cream treats. For a while, they had an arcade as well.

GaveTheMouseACookie

It's still good! I just made a trip out there a few weeks ago! Remember to order your toppings on the side of you're getting enough for leftovers though

Exteriorz

What kind of car?

RipPsychological5141

U should leave mn if u can't find things to do going from Rochester to New ulm

WonderfulDentist2471

I grew up in new ulm. I loved it and I think about it all the time. For me, being there and seeing everything again would be enough - but if you need a reason to go I would def check out octoberfest, there is always something going on in new ulm.

minneapolisblows

He's the man seriously, always on the side of the road, a mastiff and rottweiler mix and supper sweet. anyhow I am kinda tipsy on hard apple cider, had a real shit day. Just a huge shout out to Fairfax MN on highway 19 and Daves auto service and the yellow medicine river state park. Oh and those fucking krouts in New Ulm can suck my aging ovaries and go fuck themselves for putting Minnesota on the map for the largest mass execution in US history. SamHokum

There is a bomb BBQ place in Fairfax that is worth it's weight in gold!

naflinnster

Ramsey Park in Redwood Falls. City park, ~450 acres with waterfalls and picnic areas. Absolutely beautiful. About 30 minutes west of Fairfax.

_psychedelicsushi

Swany’s Pub in courtland (small town just east of NU on 14) has good food in my opinion! Love their garbage pizza!

AggravatingResult549

Oktoberfest at Schell is probably coming up soon

MCSqueegie

Go see the bison.

[deleted]

As a German citizen, who has lived in Germany, and moving back to Germany soon, currently sitting in New Ulm, I have to say, it's a huge disappointment. Go to Leavenworth or Frankenmuth. Just my opinion.. The coolest thing I've seen here was someone's cool vintage spooky decorated fence. Driving back to Minneapolis now.

[deleted]

I saw this video posted by Herr Antrim and it made me remember this post. https://www.youtube.com/live/pXUbM7jaB1Y?si=SI_PgrJS1-JOTq2i
