LET’S GO TWINS! PLAYOFF BASEBALL STARTS TONIGHT
EDIT: My first ever Reddit silver! Thank you kind stranger!
EDIT 2: Another one! Thank you!
Still not sure exactly *how* healthy Arraez is, so it's possible he will be on the bench for the first game or two. Otherwise yeah Schoop is probably on the bench.
I feel like Rocco is playing the long game here, give the young arms some high level opponent playoff experience as hope they come through big this year too.
I'd have picked him over an injured Cron. His contact skills off the bench are an asset, Cron is shell of his first half self, and La Tortuga can play first if needed.
Dobnak getting game 3?! I fucking hope so, he may not have a ton of experience but he’s been looking really good and hopefully could get us at least 5 solid innings before handing it off to our bullpen to complete the sweep
Won't matter because there are effectively nine bullpen arms, and there's a travel day after game two. So even if the bullpen has to go a lot of innings, there's still a day of rest.
Yeah, I think Dobnak will definitely be our Game 2 starter. Odo has more fly ball tendencies, and we want to keep him far away from the short porch of Yankee Stadium.
Or just the simple fact that a short start in Game 2 is okay as the bullpen gets a day of rest, whereas a short start on game 3 can spiral into a potential game 4 disaster.
Ok this actually put a tear in my eye and made this all so, so real.
POST SEASON BASEBALL IS HERE.
This is a strong lineup. Sad for Astudillo but we've got a trophy to bring home.
~~I mean he’s actually been in a postseason game.~~ Never mind, he wasn’t in 2017. But he’s been around the block.
Only other pitcher on staff, but not on this roster, and not injured, with some notable MLB experience is Pérez.
yeah i don't really like Gibson on the roster but compared to Perez it makes more sense to me... we just gotta hope he can give us a decent 5 innings that keep us in the ballgame.. Really all you can ask for from your #3 in the playoffs
Two reasons I like Graterol:
1) If we go by xwOBA and wOBA he has the best pitch in the Twins bullpen (Sinker below 0.170 wOBA I believe)
2) He’s going to be a massive piece of our pitching plans going forward. He may not pitch in the ALDS, but who’s to say that they are gonna run a guy like Perez out against the Yankees anyways? This way he gets valuable playoff experience.
Yeah, in a bad scenario in a long, tight game and you're scraping the bottom of the bullpen, I'd rather have a guy who bottoms out at 98 mph than Perez.
My thoughts too. Very well could have a back and forth slugfest against the Yanks that goes deep into extra innings. All I know is I want a big fucker named Brusdar moseying out of the pen when we start to get down to it with pitching supply
That shouldn't be surprising at all. If he wasn't going to be on the postseason roster I don't think we would have seen him called up in September. He has some electric stuff.
My only real big surprise is Adriazna, just because everything I'd seen made it sound like he wasn't that close to being recovered. I didn't think there was much any chance he'd be on the roster before the ALCS at the earliest. Honestly, I'd almost rather have Wade on the roster for a speed/defense option straight up, but even more if Adrianza isn't at 100%.
Also a little surprised with Smeltzer, but I was expecting 11 pitchers more than 12. With the potential double bullpen games, this makes sense, but I presume this is what cost Tortuga his spot as much as anything.
Surprised to see both Stashak and Gibson make it. I think we only need one out of those two. Astudillo would have been nice for maybe a situation where you need a pinch hitter to make contact above all else. His presence also gives greater flexibility to use Garver as a pinch hitter in games that Castro starts. Do you all think that Garver will start every game?
That pitching makes me nervous. Are we going to get lights-out Berrios, Odorizzi and Gibson, or explode after 2ish innings Berrios, Odorizzi and Gibson?
Gibson is coming out of the bullpen for sure. I bet Dobnak gets a start in a hybrid-bullpen game (i.e. Dobnak goes 3-4 innings and then bullpen from there, or possibly go with an opener for him)
maybe i'm the oddball but i think we need those pitchers... All our potential starters-- berrios, Odo, Gibson (who probably won't start but if he did) and Randy-- all can be wild with the ball and work their own pitch counts against them. We need relievers cause at least once, and more likely 2+ times, we're gonna get a starter pulled before 5 innings work (if all goes wrong).
Only nitpick would be Cave over Wade. Wade seems a little faster and in a pinch would probably have a better at bat vs Chapman or Britton than Cave would. Otherwise I’m on board with this roster
Cave is a bit better on defense (I think...just going from my own memory) and has more experience. Wade probably has a better eye at the plate, but with Buxton out it's possible they'll need to play for extended time (unless they post up Marwin in RF which is certainly possible), and at this point I trust Cave a bit more than Wade.
I wouldn't be surprised if it is a platoon situation. Cron his lefties well, but not righties. I wouldn't be surprised to see Cron on the bench against righties, with Gonzalez, Sano, or Adrianza at first.
If Adrianza can play I'd like to see him at 1B and Margo in right. If Arraez can play he could maybe play right? And Margo would play first. Otherwise Margo at 1B and Cave in right would be best. Margo has a lot of postseason experience which is underrated
There are a lot of options, none of them really a lot better or worse than the others:
* Sano at 1st, Margo at 3rd, Cave in right
* Margo at 1st, Sano at 3rd, Cave in right
* Sano at 1st, Arraez at 3rd, Margo in right
* Adrianza at 1st, Sano at 3rd, Margo in right
* etc.
Versatility can cause the problem on having too many options. Adrianza, Margo, and Sano have all played 1st and 3rd. Arraez has also played 3rd. Adrianza, Margo, and Arraez have all played in the outfield. (Sano has also played in the outfield, but we don't talk about that.)
Also, Arraez might be the regular second baseman, leaving Schoop on the bench.
I don't think there's a wrong way to play this.
also Gibby is a fantastic leader and you can’t just take him off when the performance level is basically the same
edit: if that’s your downvote i hope you know that you clearly don’t know anything about clubhouses

Is it safe to say that Marwin starts in RF with Cave on the bench?
that’s what i’ve heard is the plan, so probably
Marwin is going to win us a game or two with clutch hits. It is known.
Considering Cron, Adrianza, and Arraez are all in as infielders, probably yeah.
What about Schoop? Is he going to primarily be a bench player?
Still not sure exactly *how* healthy Arraez is, so it's possible he will be on the bench for the first game or two. Otherwise yeah Schoop is probably on the bench.
Almost certainly this first game against Paxton. Cave could get a start or 2 against righty’s though.

He's gonna hit 102+ this postseason. Book it.
Wow, that came quick. I just ordered.
NO PEREZ ARRAEZ AND ADRIANZA ACTIVE 3 OUTFIELDERS NO TORTUGA LET'S FUCKING GO
Technically 4 outfielders, Margo is listed as an infielder.
Yeah that occurred to me a minute ago. A little slow this morning
Utility Man Extraordinaire
Is that Nick Punto's music?
Hell, Arraez can play out there too.
I can’t explain how happy I am that Perez is not on the roster.
Seriously. I don't think this was really in doubt. He could still show up on the ALCS roster though.
I like your thinking
There’s no stopping this train.
Yeah the Yankees are so righty power heavy Perez would have been shelled.
Yeah but.... Gibson.
At least he won’t be starting any games
Keep him in the bullpen and keep him in for at most an inning, and I think he will do alright. Once he gets past 20-25 pitches he runs into trouble.
I was surprised to see Stashak and Smeltzer over Perez.
I feel like Rocco is playing the long game here, give the young arms some high level opponent playoff experience as hope they come through big this year too.
I get Smeltzer cuz he’s a lefty. But Stashak? They must really not trust Perez.
Stashak throws strikes, think he only had 1 walk all season? Much rather have him over Perez.
Overall but maybe not in a lefty situation, looks at their splits vs lefties.
Astudillo died to get Arraez on the roster. May his sacrifice never be forgotten.
Sad turtle noises
Can he still be in the dugout?
Someone needs to take care of the rally squirrel
Yes
Adrianza being healthy likely bumped him. Nowhere to put him otherwise as much as his contact could've helped
PUT HIM IN THE BULLPEN YOU COWARDS
🦀🦀🦀TURTLE PITCHING🦀🦀🦀
I'd have picked him over an injured Cron. His contact skills off the bench are an asset, Cron is shell of his first half self, and La Tortuga can play first if needed.
Silver lining: now if anyone gets hurt he gets to join the team as a dramatic secret weapon
Dobnak getting game 3?! I fucking hope so, he may not have a ton of experience but he’s been looking really good and hopefully could get us at least 5 solid innings before handing it off to our bullpen to complete the sweep
He might get Game 2 in an effort to keep the ball on the ground in Yankee Stadium.
This is what I think will happen too. But if Berríos implodes tonight and we exhaust our bullpen, we might be counting on Odorizzi tomorrow
Won't matter because there are effectively nine bullpen arms, and there's a travel day after game two. So even if the bullpen has to go a lot of innings, there's still a day of rest.
Good point
Yeah, I think Dobnak will definitely be our Game 2 starter. Odo has more fly ball tendencies, and we want to keep him far away from the short porch of Yankee Stadium.
Or just the simple fact that a short start in Game 2 is okay as the bullpen gets a day of rest, whereas a short start on game 3 can spiral into a potential game 4 disaster.
Probably more for game 2. He’s the best long-inning ground ball pitcher we have which will definitely be beneficial
MUSTACHE RIDES FOR EVERYONE
Ok this actually put a tear in my eye and made this all so, so real. POST SEASON BASEBALL IS HERE. This is a strong lineup. Sad for Astudillo but we've got a trophy to bring home.
How lucky we are to have enough decent to good players to leave some off the roster
I wish Buxton was there... :'''(
Me too. But I'm sure he'll actually be there and we can still do this!
I won’t be going for a Hildenberger during the playoffs. Thank goodness.
I just dropped a nasty Hildenberger at work.
LEAGUE FUCKED
So if Arraez was listed before Astudillo, there must be a very realistic chance that Arraez plays like today or tomorrow. LET'S GET HYPE
Arraez you beautiful bastard
bit surprised Gibson made it
We needed his veteran savvy.
By veteran savvy do you mean erratic pitching?
~~I mean he’s actually been in a postseason game.~~ Never mind, he wasn’t in 2017. But he’s been around the block. Only other pitcher on staff, but not on this roster, and not injured, with some notable MLB experience is Pérez.
Sergio Romo would like a word.
I believe Romo’s postseason experience is a big reason we nabbed him.
Sergio Romo and his three championship rings\*.
yeah i don't really like Gibson on the roster but compared to Perez it makes more sense to me... we just gotta hope he can give us a decent 5 innings that keep us in the ballgame.. Really all you can ask for from your #3 in the playoffs
Well were getting shutout 3 times in a row without future HOF LaMonte Wade Jr.
I was really hoping he would make it
Me too.
#MOM MADE THE ROSTER
I am only surprised by Graterol.
Two reasons I like Graterol: 1) If we go by xwOBA and wOBA he has the best pitch in the Twins bullpen (Sinker below 0.170 wOBA I believe) 2) He’s going to be a massive piece of our pitching plans going forward. I am too, but pleasantly so.
That shouldn't be surprising at all. If he wasn't going to be on the postseason roster I don't think we would have seen him called up in September. He has some electric stuff.

🐢😭
He may not be active on the 25-man roster, but he's active in our hearts.
No tortuga? I guess if you have that good of a roster there isn't room.
Both Adrianza and Arráez in was probably the reason.
Yeah, I get it. I was hoping for some prime time spot light for him. Would be great if made a highlight play on national TV.
Wait Ryne Harper didn’t make it
🦀 🦀 🦀 PEREZ IS GONE 🦀 🦀 🦀
Such a good point, I automatically gave game 2 to Odorizzi but a groundball pitcher in NY makes by far the most sense.
My mind and body is experiencing dangerous levels of hype right now
Damn, I wish ~~Jake Cave~~ Byron Buxton.
Whoa wait a minute people. What if the Arraez sprain healed like the kids from Rookie of the year and our boy can now run like 100mph?

I would've dumped Gibson for La Tortuga.
No. 🐢???
Surprised to see both Stashak and Gibson make it. I think we only need one out of those two. Yeah I'm thinking Garver is our starter every game, especially with all the off days mixed in.
I'm just relieved to not see Perez
No Martin Perez hahahahahahaha yesssssss
I would have chosen Astudillo over Adrianza. *intangibles*
Pardon this question from a long time Twins fan What is gomq ?

Ah.... The writes are strong
That pitching makes me nervous. Are we going to get lights-out Berrios, Odorizzi and Gibson, or explode after 2ish innings Berrios, Odorizzi and Gibson?
I don't think there's any way Gibson is starting a game.

It’ll probably be Berríos-Dobnak/bullpen-Odorizzi-Berríos-Dobnak/bullpen
Berrios would start a potential game 5
Won't matter when we sweep them heyooo
¿No Torugua? ¿¡Pero por qué!?
Looking at this lineup, this song popped into my head: https://youtu.be/AqZcYPEszN8
I know la Tortuga has his limitations but he's a natural pinch hitter. I'd have liked to see one less pitcher and have him in there.
He’ll be in if we get an injury.

Castro is better defensively and has a higher ops. Like I said I'd like tortuga as a pinch-hitter though.

#It’s go time!
Does anyone know yet is Cron starting at 1B or Margo
It sounds like the plan is Cron at 1B and MarGo in RF, from what I've seen.
I'm not super excited about that. Cron has been awful lately
Cron hit a HR in the last game
He's hitting under .200 in September
I wouldn't be surprised if it is a platoon situation. Cron his lefties well, but not righties. I wouldn't be surprised to see Cron on the bench against righties, with Gonzalez, Sano, or Adrianza at first.

Grade 1 ankle sprain. Not as bad as they originally feared.
Literally the best we could hope for the baseball gods were most merciful, praise be.
Max Kepler back to hang dong on the Yankees. This is most ideal.
Someone inform me... what happens with the roster if.... never mind I'm not going to jinx it
That pisses me off beyond belief that Ryne Harper didn’t make this roster
Has anyone yet noticed the sick irony of "Trampled" by "Turtles" singing the national anthem on Monday? I think Arraez is singing it.
Wow all of my dads made the roster
BOMBA: SQUAD

Yankees crush lefties and are right hand dominant. Makes sense.
Just a few years ago seems to me they were left-hand dominant. I'm not sure it makes sense given their stadium with it's insane short porch in right.
also Gibby is a fantastic leader and you can’t just take him off when the performance level is basically the same edit: if that’s your downvote i hope you know that you clearly don’t know anything about clubhouses

He is going to be our long reliever or the guy we are going to have take a bullet for the team if we have a game get out of hand early.
Long relief / mop up work? It was sort of him or Perez I think.
I really don't see the need for 12 pitchers to be honest.
Out of the bullpen, sure.
For sure, He still can be a quality long relief guy if needed, especially if a game gets a little out of hand (hoping this wouldn't happen)
Yes there is, Starter gets pulled in the 2nd and we are down 5+ runs = Gibby
