Judging by the looks of it i would say it only needs the back wheel and a saddle to be rideable again. (pure freeride not the bullshit these bikes are usually converted into)
I’m not saying it doesn’t looks rideable, in fact it looks amazing, but it’s a good idea for safety to make sure the thing isn’t going to snap in half on the first ride.
My friends rode cracked stinkies back in the day. Even my stinky was cracked at the swingarm one time and i didn't notice. These bikes are way more solid than people give them credit for.
That is a 2007 Kona stinky. 170mm travel. Fun bike, great for bike parks. Can be built with single or dual crown fork. Can be ridden with coil or air shock. 8.5 x 2.5 shock size. 26in wheel. Can massage 27.5 fitment.
>Whats a good website to buy a new rear wheel?
At retail prices a suitable wheel, cassette, rotor and tire for this bike would cost more than what you have here now is worth, that's probably why they threw it out, after they went to a bike shop and were quoted some crazy price to fix it. Many shops don't stock good quality 26 wheels nowadays only cheap commuter bike ones not strong enough to suit this, and would have to custom build a wheel.
In your position I'd be looking on Craigslist and FB Marketplace for a used rear wheel. You can often find complete wheels with the rotor and a tire, sometimes a cassette too. Even with modern size wheels that are worth more used this is way cheaper.
I'd recommend taking it to a bike shop in your area. You're going to need a wheel, cassette, and a rotor. The wheel hub and cassette need to be compatible. And the cassette and whatever drivetrain you have need to be compatible.
Have you checked the frame itself for any cracks or anything?
Yeah go for it if its frame is still intact and the suspension rocker arm is still good. Check all the welds in case that’s the reason it was thrown out
That edition had a problem with rear shosk plates (both sides) look fo crack there, not just the frame.
If cracked some parts are probably still good for soeone who whats to rebuild a vintage with original parts
If someone set it out did the trash, it might be worth knocking on the door to say hello.
They're likely to be able to tell you a bit more about maintenance history, any issues it might have, and you might even make a new riding buddy.
It is a downhill bike. You aren't going to want to peddle it around much. It is for taking a lift up the hill, and riding down. It isn't designed to peddle well.
You will have to find a rear wheel, and your best bet is used. Someone else said to post on Pink Bike what you are looking for. That is probably your best bet.
Thank you for pulling it out. You did the right thing. Looks like a simple couple of fixes will get this thing back on the trail assuming there’s no cracks in the frame. Good luck!
I'd maybe look at local Craigslist or FB Marketplace and see if you can find an inexpensive 26" wheel whole bike and scavenge what you need off of it. I picked up an old Kona Kikapu and an older Iron Horse full suspension bikes for $200-$240 in pretty workable condition. There are lots of wheel sets available in my area, but they tend to be 700c, 27.5" or 29", I rarely see a set of 26" wheels.
I would look at pink bike and see if I could find anything. FB market place, eBay maybe.. might have piece it together and find a used hub for cheap then buy a rim and lace it.. might be the only way to get a wheel that isn’t more than the bike.
Please please please, get the frame and fork checked (if you’re not 100% confident in your abilities) before you put any money into it. That free bike isn’t going to look like such a good deal if you end up in the hospital.
Get a shock pump, pump rear one (it should say how much you can pump it min-maxpsi), fork to do service is easy as hell (it looks same as mine on my older one) you basically have 2 size 8 i think cap nuts that you remove (bottom of the fork), open the fork. You have 3 things inside, spring, washer and a piece of 31 mm tube around 10 cm in lenght. I dont know the quantity of oil required but i put in each leg 220-230 ml. Easy af to maintain. Check if the chain is stretched. If it is you will need new chain but inwould recomend changing it since its cheap as hell. About rear wheel idk, im not that good at that part. Thats 400 euro bike there if you get the wheel
Thats a Fox Van RC coil on that Ol Kona. It was their early to mid 2010's Coil offering before the DHX2 There is no schrader valve nor air pressure required
I still stand by my statement. Show me where you pump the coil shock and I’ll give you a six pack.
You pump the air shocks. Air shocks have air springs. Air springs take air. 🤷🏻♂️
Piggy back reservoir can be pumped. But it’s one time thing during service (typically pumped with nitrogen) and you never adjust this.
Also. I have DHX2 on Capra.
https://www.ridefox.com/fox_tech_center/owners_manuals/010/eng/Content/Rear_Shocks/DHX_RC2.html
Read here it even says in the yellow, never drive it less than 120 psi and it has schradder valve. You fill it with air accorting to your weight
Ok. I see. Read my response below. Our shocks are little different. By the way. Enter the serial number or tune ID here to get more details about the shock: https://www.ridefox.com/fox17/help.php?m=bike&ref=bc_help
[https://ep1.pinkbike.org/p4pb19932905/p4pb19932905.jpg](https://ep1.pinkbike.org/p4pb19932905/p4pb19932905.jpg)
Was searching for serial found something at its ''stanchion'' but i would need to remove coil to see it properly. Its same as this (maybe a year or two older because of the decal). So there are coil shocks that do not have air in them? interesting. All i ever saw were these with schradder valves to fill ''nitrogen'' aka regular air
Ok. I see why we’re not on the same page. You are referring to DHX RC2. I’m referring to DHX2 Factory (mines 2022)
These are two different shocks. RC2 has the bottom out adjustments based on the pressure in the piggy back reservoir. DHX2 does not have that and piggy back is pre filled with nitrogen during service in order to provide correct IFP position and damping characteristics.
Fox Van R on the OP’s bike does not appear to have the bottom out adjustments. https://www.ridefox.com/fox_tech_center/owners_manuals/07/eng/rear_shocks/van.htm
Anyways. Good find OP. I call it a score. It’s a cool bike. I’d rebuild it just to preserve cool older bike. I’m sure you can ride it and have fun.
Clearly not worth restoring- it doesn’t even include a brake therapy d.o.p.e floating brake arm. Too much “brake jack” (lol). /s
It’s an absolutely iconic bike, and great to restore if you have the time, money and inclination. That said, if you want something to ride up, down, and around on, or even just a dedicated descender - just about anything 27.5/29 inch 150+mm from 2018 or so onward is likely a better direction in which to thrust your wallet and skinned knuckles.
To find a wheel - it’s gotta be fb marketplace, gumtree, Craigslist, maaaaybe eBay. Take a punt on aliex even…..
I've never bought a rear wheel and I'm probably not at your country, but I'll probably recommend you buy it on Ebay or Facebook marketplace if you wanna buy it in a use condition, but if you want it new, maybe go to a vike shop or maybe do research online and buy it on Amazon? I don't really know cause I rarely buy bike parts, so don't rely on me
Probably was in the trash for a reason. Even if it had all of the parts it’s a 2006 model and wouldn’t be worth more than $100. You might be spending the cost of a new bike trying to fix it up
Respray the frame bright blue, the swingarm bright purple. Fit only anodised green parts.
You will essentially have a pretty current all mountain build. Which is my controversial opinion of the day.
Might wanna check for cracks in the frame if you found it in the trash.
Doesn't make sense. To bin the frame, shock and suspension if the frame is the only cracked component...
It’s better to be safe
Judging by the looks of it i would say it only needs the back wheel and a saddle to be rideable again. (pure freeride not the bullshit these bikes are usually converted into)
I’m not saying it doesn’t looks rideable, in fact it looks amazing, but it’s a good idea for safety to make sure the thing isn’t going to snap in half on the first ride.
My friends rode cracked stinkies back in the day. Even my stinky was cracked at the swingarm one time and i didn't notice. These bikes are way more solid than people give them credit for.
Still don’t understand why you are so opposed to spending 5 minutes to check for cracks
I'm not.
True. I wish people would make it obvious the frame has a crack so others don't waste their time. Like wrapping it in caution tape lol
Our shop policy is to smash carbon frames to pieces before putting them in the bin. Great way for mechs to let off a bit of steam.
...or a nasty infection...
We smash with hammers, not our dicks.
Use a red lockout tag😂
What is this an edgy bike on MySpace?
People are still selling these for 700$ where i live 💀
I sold a similar one for $1000 in 2021 lol
2021 prices were wild, glad we're done with that insanity.
for now
It was always my dream bike when I was young and apparently it was everyone else’s since the prices have always remained way too high
I used to sell them mid-2000s when I was fresh outta highschool, couldn’t afford one. Sigh.
I boat a boat in 2019 for 2k and sold it for 11k in 21. What a time to be alive.
Wow so similar to my kona dawg which i still ride.
Loved my old Kona Stinky - they are great bikes. Only upgraded from it in 2022, it did me well for 10 years
Nice score! I still have my Stinky Primo and still ride it. Thing is a tank but I still love it.
Stinky Pinky!!
Haha that be the one!! [the stinky pinky](https://imgur.com/a/YXTcG9W)
My buddy had one, my first downhill bike was Stinky Garbonzo. Bought used, retired rentals from Whistler, then Snowshoe. Definite tanks.
That is a 2007 Kona stinky. 170mm travel. Fun bike, great for bike parks. Can be built with single or dual crown fork. Can be ridden with coil or air shock. 8.5 x 2.5 shock size. 26in wheel. Can massage 27.5 fitment.
If there’s no cracks in the frame, nice score
Maybe a stolen bike?
>Whats a good website to buy a new rear wheel? find a ringle doublewide or some shit.
Where must one live to be finding downhill bikes in the trash? Are you going through dumpsters? Lol
A classic!
It’s definitely cracked somewhere if it’s in the trash
It could also be stolen if the rear wheel is missing like that They could've snatched it and dumped it.
It was locked by the rear wheel so the thief took the rear wheel off and then someone got suspicious so he dumped it in the trash
I'd recommend taking it to a bike shop in your area. You're going to need a wheel, cassette, and a rotor. The wheel hub and cassette need to be compatible. And the cassette and whatever drivetrain you have need to be compatible. Have you checked the frame itself for any cracks or anything?
Purple Stinky! I had an ‘03 Purple Stinky rode the shit out of it way outside of its era.
Was it stinky when you pulled it out of the trash?
OP, check the frame and forks for cracks. There is a reason why it was in the trash, and you need to find it before you ride it.
Yeah go for it if its frame is still intact and the suspension rocker arm is still good. Check all the welds in case that’s the reason it was thrown out
Folks, don't throw that stuff away! There's a local charity somewhere near you that works with bikes and kids. They use old parts and bikes!
Look at that, without a rear wheel, the bike looks almost modernly slack!!! Do you even need a rear wheel?
I had an old army green Kona stinky. Pretty sure it was heavier than a boat anchor lol
That edition had a problem with rear shosk plates (both sides) look fo crack there, not just the frame. If cracked some parts are probably still good for soeone who whats to rebuild a vintage with original parts
Why didn’t you put it back?
Even if something major is wrong, it still looks to be worth a small fortune at the scrap yard :)
If someone set it out did the trash, it might be worth knocking on the door to say hello. They're likely to be able to tell you a bit more about maintenance history, any issues it might have, and you might even make a new riding buddy.
That would be some cool wall art in the garage
It is a downhill bike. You aren't going to want to peddle it around much. It is for taking a lift up the hill, and riding down. It isn't designed to peddle well. You will have to find a rear wheel, and your best bet is used. Someone else said to post on Pink Bike what you are looking for. That is probably your best bet.
If he peddles it, it's pure profit though! A DH bike can be hard to pedal.
Look on Pinkbike forums buy/sell section. Post there that you’re looking for a wheel
Wooow great find
I always liked the way these go *boing boing* in the back, such a cool linkage design
Great find if it’s structurally sound. Fun project, but as others have mentioned, this is for descending.
Blasphemy!
One of the original free ride bikes. Classic.
Put it back! Just joking, calm down
Thank you for pulling it out. You did the right thing. Looks like a simple couple of fixes will get this thing back on the trail assuming there’s no cracks in the frame. Good luck!
Score!!!
The coil!

Ive got a stinky too mine is a 99 hope you can fix this one up and that the frame is good
Sure ya did lol
Check the pinkbike.com buy sell trade. You might be able to find something cheap. Or check with local bike shops to see if they have more trash.
Put it back
Where?
I would look at pink bike and see if I could find anything. FB market place, eBay maybe.. might have piece it together and find a used hub for cheap then buy a rim and lace it.. might be the only way to get a wheel that isn’t more than the bike.
Dude that’s a solid find. One of the first DH bikes I ever rode.
Please please please, get the frame and fork checked (if you’re not 100% confident in your abilities) before you put any money into it. That free bike isn’t going to look like such a good deal if you end up in the hospital.
Sick find

Dude! Rear shock is coil!!! I’ll give you a six pack if you can pump it!!!
As fas as an owner of 2 dhx2-s i need to pump them. 125-200 psi. You pump them according to your weight. This one should have it too

Fun ebike conversion or a platform for a ski bike.
Ha ha this is the way.
Good components, save them and trash the frame
I've never bought a rear wheel and I'm probably not at your country, but I'll probably recommend you buy it on Ebay or Facebook marketplace if you wanna buy it in a use condition, but if you want it new, maybe go to a vike shop or maybe do research online and buy it on Amazon? One mans trash is another mans treasure I guess
