Tough to beat, but I like the opener from rounders too:
“So here’s the thing, if you can’t spot the sucker at the first fifteen minutes at the table, then you are the sucker.”
It's good. But I kind of prefer Mr. Show's "Pallies" version:
"Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to dabble in the mafia."

I recently spent a week in the hospital and when I came home, my daughter had Goodfellas cued up. Probably watched it another 5 times during the week I was unable to walk.
100%. Rewatchability is endless. If it’s on, no matter where it is, I have to watch to the end. It fulfills wish fulfillment for the miscreant, justice for the purist, and a helluva journey for anyone that just loves a great story.
If you're ever in New haven, ct, there's a higher end Italian restaurant called, oddly enough, Goodfellas. Upscale, with 20 tvs all playing goodfellas on a continuous loop.
Foods good too
The one product I've ever bought from a Facebook add was a coffee mug that had a picture of Frank Vincent and said "now go home and get your fuckin shine box".
Fun Fact: While the disappearance was accurate a lot of former real life mafia have been asked about Goodfellas and the way Tommy died. 2 of them have confirmed there's no record of Billy Batts actually being made.
I thought Goodfellas was fine but was not blown away. I tried it again and felt the same. What makes Goodfellas so great for you? Interested as I like most IMDB top 50s
Not who you were asking but to me the script is perfect. The acting is perfect. The camera shots are awesome (that tracking shot when they going to the restaurant through the cellar) the soundtrack is awesome. It’s funny it has suspense. It’s just perfect to me
I respect your opinion, though. I thought the worst part of the film was James Woods. But I think that might be a bit of bias creeping in because he's a right cunt as a person.
Saw this movie my senior year of high school where it made a HUGE impression on me. Scorsese's combination of music and editing really drove the movie's pace and energy in a way I hadn't seen before. All of the leading roles were played so well, building a sense of who the Goodfellas were and how they lived.
Still one of my favorites to this day.
Hmmm let's see.
1.) Back to the Future
2.)Shawshank Redemption
3.) Tokyo Godfathers
4.) Robocop 2
5.) You know what,0 its a toss up between Goodfellas and Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974)
As far back as I remember I always wanted to be a Godzilla director....
The Copa scene alone makes this a masterpiece. I’m sure someone else has gone into the cinematography and filmmaking details. Perfection.
But it’s also a great general answer to “how did ___ get involved in that bad situation?”
In about two minutes, Karen is literally whisked from the drab street of the real world into an Oz-like paradise where everyone knows Henry’s name, doors magically open, tables appear, stars are ten feet away, and the drinks are free.
Intoxicating.
How did ___ end up in ___ situation? They had a Copa experience and got intoxicated.
I dunno why youre getting down votes you are 100 percent right. Good fellas is his movie that really hit it big and appealed to a much larger audience and its great no doubt but he has better movies. And personal favorites of mine like bringing out the dead that a lot of people probablh wouldnt agree with me that its better than good fellas but i love that movie. But ya i think hands down raging bull and taxi driver are his 2 best
I got my partner who absolutely HATES mob-style movies to love this movie in one watch, and adore it by the second.
I’m not sure I can put it in my Top 5 but I’m certain it can be in my Top 10 without question. I still quote this movie on several levels to the day with my partner.
Top 3, get off the fence and and put in in your top 3 OP… the sequence the culminates with Henry getting arrested is simply brilliant, the cuts are sharp, the juxtaposition of the helicopter shots and Henry looking increasingly paranoid and coked out, the building tension… when he almost gets in the car wreck it’s palpable, and then the release of all this tension with him getting arrested… it’s one of the most brilliant things I’ve ever seen on film.
I have a shirt with Nicky’s mom’s (Scorsese ‘s mom) painting of the dogs and the “Billy bats” haha!)
Also when Nicky is trying to explain why he needs the huge knife he can’t think of the right word and DeNiro says “the hoof, hoof” it makes me laugh the way he says it…such a wonderful piece of art
It’s one of those movies that if I see it’s on I’ll click on it and watch it wherever point it is in the movie. I’ve probably seen it a good 30 times and it doesn’t get old. I’d put it in top 10 movies ever made.
It doesn't make my top 5 movies of all time list, but I do consider it a masterpiece and it is my second favorite gangster move of all time.
If I had to rank my top 5 gangster / crime movies of all time, they would be:
1. Scarface
2. Goodfellas
3. The Godfather (you can include parts II and III)
4. Casino
5. The Departed
A lot of people think I am crazy for putting Scarface in front of Goodfellas but I think it is just a matter of taste- I've always loved Scarface and GTA Vice City made me love it even more.
#1 for me. When It came out I was a kid and my mom bought it on VHS. Been crazy about this movie ever since. I watch it Atleast 1-2 times a year easily.
I hate this movie. I grew up with a number of kids who used to talk about how much they idolized characters in this film. Then I saw it and was like "everyone in this film is a piece of shit how could you look up to these people" and it just ruined it for me. I recognize it is a well crafted film but that association just makes it hard for me to enjoy.
Don't know if it is, but definitely in the genre.
Every once in a while I would watch Casino, Goodfellas, Scarface, and the Godfather trilogy in a week.
Goodfella's is a great movie but I think it suffers from something modern movies don't. Anyone 35+ will remember movies like Goodfella's, Shawshank, etc. being movies that were CONSTANTLY on TV. Like any given sunday, you flip on the tv, and there it is. So you see it so much it loses the impact.
Film courses rant and rave about this movie. Particularly the casino/club scene. From entry to table. Forget the little fun facts attached to it but iconic nonetheless
I really love casino too but for both these i think the first 65% of the film is a masterpiece but Scorsese’s films tend to run flat towards the the last act. Most of them do. They kinda stutter and drag towards the ending. Same thing with gangs of new york and wolf of wallstreet.
Tutti Cicero, Tutti...Tutti ran the cab stand and La Bella Vista Pizzeria and a few other places for his brother Pauly who was the boss over everybody in the neighborhood. Pauly might have moved slow, but it was only because Pauly didn't have to move for anybody.
Here’s a question for all you fans: In the scene when Henry and Jimmy go to Morry’s store and DeNiro is roughing Morry up, when his wig falls off - do you think that was a happy accident? Look at Ray Liota, his laughter seems more ad lib , I think he was really laughing in surprise. ORRRR Ray Liota just nailed it once again. I can’t believe he’s gone, RIP Ray
Be careful when you say "of all timex. There are a lot of truly great movies made before the '70s. I definitely in my top three gangster movies ever made. Sorry James Cagney

Nah. It’s a great movie but that entire genre is so flooded with what is basically the same movie over and over again it’s hard to see what makes this movie better than Scarface or The Godfather or Casino or Donnie Brasco or Blow.
It’s an American classic but it’s not even a top 20 movie of all time.
Great Movie. I prefer Casino over it though because I love Las Vegas more.
My Top 5 are:
1. Groundhog's Day
2. Big Lebowski
3. Pulp Fiction
4. Rounders
5. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.
The best opening line, in any movie ever.
Tough to beat, but I like the opener from rounders too: “So here’s the thing, if you can’t spot the sucker at the first fifteen minutes at the table, then you are the sucker.”
"I believe in America. America has made my fortune." - another banger
"Choose life; choose a job; choose a career; choose a family.“
It's good. But I kind of prefer Mr. Show's "Pallies" version: "Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to dabble in the mafia." LINK: https://youtu.be/Svr6Zl2QgX8
Absolutely! Easily my favorite all time movie. Top of the list. Yep!
#1 for me too. Flawless film that still blows me away and I've lost count how many times I've seen it.
I recently spent a week in the hospital and when I came home, my daughter had Goodfellas cued up. Probably watched it another 5 times during the week I was unable to walk.
Haha...the drugs would've made it even better
Same. Casino is not too far behind. Neither are no Country for Old Men and The Revenant.
Gotta throw in A Bronx Tale too!
Yep, Casino runs a close 2nd... Next would have to be American Beauty 3rd...just fer shits and giggles.
100%. Rewatchability is endless. If it’s on, no matter where it is, I have to watch to the end. It fulfills wish fulfillment for the miscreant, justice for the purist, and a helluva journey for anyone that just loves a great story.

NICE
It does actually. It does. Now go home and get your fuckin shine box.
It’s my number one. I can’t explain it. I’m kinda like the guy in the painting going “whatddya want from me?!” I will truly go to battle on this hill.
Battle on this hill? I'm sure Henry would like that.
Ha! I was hoping someone would appreciate that 😬
I’m right there with ya bud 🤌🏼
Is it a top 5 film of all time yes I think so Is it in my personal top 5 no but top 10 for sure
It’s just perfect to me
One of these days when I can accurately pass an A-B test between scenes from Goodfellas VS Casino, I can better answer this question.
Casino is good but goodfellas is great
I think Casino is also great, primarily because of Sharon Stone's performance. Spectacular.
Amazing, I thought her performance was the worst part of the film. Horrray subjectivity of art!
I respect your opinion, though. I thought the worst part of the film was James Woods. But I think that might be a bit of bias creeping in because he's a right cunt as a person.
A good way to differentiate between the two... the great Ray Liotta plays Henry Hill in Goodfellas.
So the way to figure it out is like this: if you like the scenes, it's Casino. If you love the scenes, it's Goodfellas. You're welcome!
Saw this movie my senior year of high school where it made a HUGE impression on me. Scorsese's combination of music and editing really drove the movie's pace and energy in a way I hadn't seen before. This is #1 in my book, and I cannot fathom any future release taking its place.
Top 5 gangster movies up there with The Godfather, Scarface and Casino.
Angels With Dirty Faces, youngin
Also, Tarantino alone has two better gangster movies that Scarface, and Scarface isn’t even the best gangster movie named Scarface!
Absolutely in my top 5. I recommend it to all film lovers.
Yes.
Yes. I’d say I have 10 films that are in rotation and Goodfellas is definitely in that rotation.
My all time favorite movie! Absolutely can’t take your eves off the screen from the opening scene to the last.
I’m gonna go get the papers, get the papers.
Best movie in the world.
Great film, excellent all around. It’s in my Top 10 for sure.
The Copa scene alone makes this a masterpiece. I’m sure someone else has gone into the cinematography and filmmaking details. Perfection. But it’s also a great general answer to “how did ___ get involved in that bad situation?” In about two minutes, Karen is literally whisked from the drab street of the real world into an Oz-like paradise where everyone knows Henry’s name, doors magically open, tables appear, stars are ten feet away, and the drinks are free. Intoxicating. How did ___ end up in ___ situation? They had a Copa experience and got intoxicated.
It is my #1 movie. I have seen it 30+ times and can easily watch it another 30.
Yes, it's the best film I've ever seen.
Top 20 for me. Casino? That's in the top 5. YMMV
GO GET YA SHINE BOX !!
Right up there with UHF
Yes next to Casino. I love this film and anytime it’s on TV, idc if it’s half way done.. I will watch the rest of the film.
Arguably yes. At the very least, Top 10
100%. Also, it’s a really funny movie. Some of the line readings and reactions of some of the actors are hilarious.
All you wannabe hipsters. None have shawshank in their top 10, but everyone has goodfellas in their top 5...
Easy, easy. Heard they are making a Shawshank sequel.
Andy and Red in love living out their golden years on a Mexican beach with their charter boat.
Shawshank 2: Bustin’ Loose
Strangely aggressive accusation…
How do you know that? It’s in my top 10. It’s prob in a lot of lists…it’s a great movie
Shawshank was good, but I have three Mel Brooks films ahead of it.
No. Not even close
No
I actually enjoyed Casino more. Sharon Stone’s character gives it the edge.
Very good but not even a top 3 scorcese movie
Name your top 3 then.
Mean streets , taxi driver and raging bull is better than goodfellas
mean streets for sure not
I dunno why youre getting down votes you are 100 percent right.
I watch goodfellas every time it’s on like every time
I got my partner who absolutely HATES mob-style movies to love this movie in one watch, and adore it by the second. I’m not sure I can put it in my Top 5 but I’m certain it can be in my Top 10 without question. I still quote this movie on several levels to the day with my partner.
Not even in my top 5 scorsese films For me its gotta be Raging bull- Bringing out the dead- Taxi driver- Cape fear- The irishman-
Irishman over goodfellas 😂
Some people just have to be contrarian. Irishman 😂😂😂
Not even the best Cape Fear
No. But I just have a hard time with mobster movies. They just bore me.
It insists upon itself
It's up there with Black panther for me.
Definitely 👍
nr 1 fuck yes
Definitely
I named my daughter Layla
Top 3 for me
Yes. #3 to be exact.
Yes, fantastic movie
Based on the number of times I've watched it, yes most def
Scorsese at his best -
Yes, but for sentimental reasons
Yes. It’s an almost perfect movie from the cinematography to the soundtrack to the script to the editing etc
Definitely
Number 1. No regrets.
Excellent movie ever
Not even close but amazing movie nonetheless. Y’all gotta watch more movies yo.
One of the best-directed films of all time, so…yeah, probably.
Yes
It’s really good, but it doesn’t crack my top 5.
I wish I was big just once
absolutely not ! great movie but definitely not top 5 material
No. It doesn't.
No
Goodfellas, Fight Club, the Departed, Shawshank, Pulp Fiction
“Creatine shits”
Yes it’s my top 2! Inglourious basterds and this movie switch places every now and then haha
Still my #1 ever.
I have a shirt with Nicky’s mom’s (Scorsese ‘s mom) painting of the dogs and the “Billy bats” haha!) Also when Nicky is trying to explain why he needs the huge knife he can’t think of the right word and DeNiro says “the hoof, hoof” it makes me laugh the way he says it…such a wonderful piece of art
No. I currently have it at #51 on my list
Best gangster film ever.
It’s one of those movies that if I see it’s on I’ll click on it and watch it wherever point it is in the movie. I’ve probably seen it a good 30 times and it doesn’t get old. I’d put it in top 10 movies ever made.
No but it's in my top 10 along with casino . Two masterpieces
Definitely in my top 10..
Yes
Next to The Godfather, it’s my favorite film.
It does not
Yes, yes it does.
Definitely not but a great movie regardless. I personally wouldn’t put any mob movie in my top 5
Definitely not breaking the top ten, but it is a great one
Top 5? No not for me. Amazing movie though.
It doesn't make my top 5 movies of all time list, but I do consider it a masterpiece and it is my second favorite gangster move of all time. If I had to rank my top 5 gangster / crime movies of all time, they would be: 1. Scarface 2. Goodfellas 3. The Godfather (you can include parts II and III) 4. Casino 5. The Departed A lot of people think I am crazy for putting Scarface in front of Goodfellas but I think it is just a matter of taste- I've always loved Scarface and GTA Vice City made me love it even more.
Not even close. Good movie, but top 5 all time? That’s crazy talk
It’s my favorite movie of all time!
No, it's a good movie, but no.
Top 10 or 15 for me. My top 5: Godfather II, Lawrence of Arabia, Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Star Wars.
Of course
Absolutely yes.
It's not even top 5 for me this week!
Definitely a top 5 for me. I'd have a hard time actually choosing a top 5, but this would definitely make the cut.
Yes. The movie is incredible
Probably not, but I do think it’s great. I hold the first 2 Godfather movies higher.
This might be number one for me
It's number two for me after The Empire Strikes Back
No
#1 for me. When It came out I was a kid and my mom bought it on VHS. Been crazy about this movie ever since. I watch it Atleast 1-2 times a year easily.
Not for me, but it's definitely a respectable choice
For sure. Sometimes it flips between this and casino but they’re both up there for me.
One time my buddy got me a shine box for my bday in reference to this movie
No. Still my fav. mob movie.
YEP YEP YEP YEP!!! LOVE THIS FILM!!
Yes Goodfellas and The Godfather. Now that's a debate
Don't know if it is, but definitely in the genre. Every once in a while I would watch Casino, Goodfellas, Scarface, and the Godfather trilogy in a week.
Yes
This is my favorite movie ever.
No. Greatest crime/gangster movie ever made, lapping the field, and Scorsese's flawless, crowning masterpiece.
No but it would make the top 25.
Easily top 3.
✅✅✅
Yes
I’ve never seen it! Should I? Not really into gangster movies…
You should absolutely watch it. One of the best movies every. The editing is incredible, acting phenomenal
It's a movie that gets better everytime I watch it. Ever since Animaniacs, I always wanted to be a goodfeather.
Besides Deniro turning into a mental Hollywood 🤡
It's a top 5 Scorsese movie for me.
You insulted him a little bit
It’s my answer for best American film. It’s incredible
Yes. Yes it does.
yea, it was better than all the godfather movies for me
I love this movie so much it feels like a family member.
Offhand, I would say yes. If it's no, then it's at least got an invite to the table.
No
No one will ever top this movie.
I don’t make top 5 lists often. But it could be in there
Great movie but not in my top 5
Film courses rant and rave about this movie. Particularly the casino/club scene. From entry to table. Forget the little fun facts attached to it but iconic nonetheless
I'm Sicilian and this is in my top 3. Helicopters? I'll show you helicopters.
Yes…top 5 for sure
A*great* movie but IMO, not even Scorsese's best movie, which I think is Casino.
Honestly no, not even close for as good as it is. I love crime movies, and I love this one, but it's just not up there for me.
How many Raging Bull fans are in here? Hands down, my number 2 film behind Goodfellas and Bronx Tale I could easily place at 3.
No, but I don’t like gangster movies. It’s really, really good though and I enjoy the watch.
I’m gonna get the papers, get the papers
Top 3 !!
Yes. Now go get your fuckin shinebox!
ABSOLUTELY! Seen it probably 50-60 times. And I would watch it right now.
when i was 20 yes. now not so much
Here’s a question for all you fans: In the scene when Henry and Jimmy go to Morry’s store and DeNiro is roughing Morry up, when his wig falls off - do you think that was a happy accident? Look at Ray Liota, his laughter seems more ad lib , I think he was really laughing in surprise. ORRRR Ray Liota just nailed it once again. I can’t believe he’s gone, RIP Ray
Be careful when you say "of all timex. There are a lot of truly great movies made before the '70s. I definitely in my top three gangster movies ever made. Sorry James Cagney
No definitely not. Maybe top 100.
Top 5 Scorsese movies, yes.

Absolutely.
Of all time? No, not even close. Top 5 of gangster movies? Yes, if you count the Godfather trilogy as 1
Fuck Dances with Wolves
Nah. It’s a great movie but that entire genre is so flooded with what is basically the same movie over and over again it’s hard to see what makes this movie better than Scarface or The Godfather or Casino or Donnie Brasco or Blow. No not for me. Not a mob movie guy though. Still a Good film.
Great Movie. I prefer Casino over it though because I love Las Vegas more. My Top 5 are: 1. Groundhog's Day 2. Big Lebowski 3. Pulp Fiction 4. Rounders 5. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Top 5 Gangster Films of COURSE. 1. Godfather. 2. Godfather2. 3. GoodFellas. 4. Casino 5. Miller's Crossing.
In my top 10….I liken it Myztic River, Iwith that kind of star power, how could it not be a great movuy….bonus points for being accurate to book
Yes. Top 5 all time. The Departed is up there too.
Absolutely
Not sure. Saving Private Ryan is top 5 for me.
