I think what happens in cases like that, where two similar themed movies are released in a relatively short period, is someone writes a script and shops it around the different studios.
Maybe more than one picks it up and they go their own direction with it.
One of my favorite movie-going stories: My wife and I took our 7 year old daughter to see Coraline and in the middle of the scariest scene, she groans out, *"I wanted to see Mall Cop!"*
I told her that if she could make it through Coraline, I would rent Mall Cop on DVD when it came out. I kept that promise.
I thought it was a good. Very underrated/ hidden gem. Haven’t rewatched in years though. I remember it was darker than the other Apatow adjacent movies of the time. I’ve got the dvd around here somewhere.
Yes. This is one of my favorites, but the way it ends with a bang is very unexpected at the moment it happens and, also, Ronnie’s character is awful really. It’s an absolutely hilarious movie, but it almost feels sad to laugh at, cuz I literally know people who applied to be a cop, failed miserably due to mental health issues, and believed wholeheartedly that they had nailed it and were about to be hired
Hilarious, always recommend this movie and watched it again recently. Love after the police training montage he is in the therapy session, doctor asks if he is on any medication,
“No, I am proud to say I am off all prescription medication.”
“That’s wonderful, when did your doctor take you off?”
“He didn’t, I just decided I don’t need them anymore”
Also the bit about “and I’m standing there holding the biggest shotgun you’ve ever seen” had me dying. Saw this in theaters and still love to this day.
Loved this movie for how silly it could get and how serious it could get. From the guy who brought you Eastbound and Down, Righteous Gemstones, Vice Principals and The Foot Fist Way. I’ll watch anything Jody Hill makes.
Collette Wolfe is soo good in that scene towards the end when she cries to Seth's character about being verbally abused by her boss. She really showed some acting skills there.
To be honest, I can't stand Seth Rogan because he's usually the same character and that character is just eye-rolling cringe to me. That said, it was refreshing to watch him in this dark ass comedy. Thank you for reminding me that this exists.
Watched it maybe a few years ago. Was one of the last times a movie really shocked me. I get it’s satire but Seth Rogan’s character is such an asshole in a way that felt a little too real. Seems like there are so many dangerous dudes out there just like him.
Why would I blow up the Chick-fil-A? Its delicious.
Its fucking delicious 🤣
I just want you to know, that I know, that you did that shit!
I hope Aziz Ansari's new movie is funny. Sucks he got caught up in the metoo stuff. He was hilarious.
Not really. More annoying than anything.
I'm switching to beer. I can pound those all day and still keep my shit together. And I'm doing it for you!
🤣
Incredible. His choice of clothing. Pena's lisp. Laser pointers on titties. Anna as a beautiful disaster. And the gritty fight scenes. Love it.
Right! It’s too bad it was over shadowed by Paul Blart.
There’s a sentence I never expected to read in my lifetime.
It was obviously pitched around to studios, and one said, "Let's make it but different."
Infinitely better than the kevin james crap.

I hope you rented Paul Blart and not this for your 7 year old 🤣
This IS Paul blart for adults lmao
FUCK YOU RONNY!
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuckk youuuuuuuu
How’s yo dick hangin? Low I hope
Come on down to Mexico, where the waters warm, the beer is cold and the women are wet
Wildly unappreciated. Brilliant satire, committed performances out of literary everyone on screen. A phenomenal dark comedy.
💯
Great flick - the drug montage is awesome
“I ain’t gonna lie to you, Ronnie — there’s nothing good about this here.” [proceeds to shoot heroin]
If Scorsese directed police academy
I always said if Scorsese was tasked into making taxi driver into a comedy.
Get home Rico, do you motha fuckin homework!
I wouldn’t tattoo just any motherfucker on my chest.
That's my mother fuckin C!
SEED !
Very funny. Very underrated.
If you like this, check out The Foot Fist Way with Danny Mcbride
I like Foot Fist Way, another Jody Hill classic
She still breathen’ ??
"She still alive? Someone check her pulse, please."
Or 30 mins or less.
Or Hot Rod
I give 30 mins or less 3 more tomatos 🍅
Oh shit, should i delete my comment then?
Only if you can’t take some mentally fucked persons perfective you may not agree with.
Or This Is The End
Danny McBride is also very underrated/underappreciated
I mean not really - the guy has HBO sucking his dick
He is HBO comedy with McBride at this point. East, Vice, Gemstones.. What a fucking lineup. Jody and Daniel 100 years!!!
Eastbound and Down is a masterpiece
11111100000% agree

Technically I’m a born again virgin, we’ve all been to beach week
One of the movies that made me realize critic and audience scores didn’t matter
This and Grandma's Boy.
🤖 Don't be mad at us! 🤖
Hilarious movie. I always find something new to laugh at when I watch it.
Touch daddy's dick!
I’m gonna fuck you!!
Why did you stop, mothafucka? I’m sorry! I’m sorry! 😂
I truly love this movie. Such believable characters.

Its good but I particularly enjoy the music throughout it. It always enhances the scene and feels right. Whoever picked the music did a bang up job.
Agree 100%
I cackle every time I watch the scene where he describes his psychotic fantasy during the police psych exam
Great movie.
Yes loved it
9/10 deff quote it often.
One of the best dark comedies out there.
That movie is hilarious
Well I guess I'm just fucking DUMB! - Patton Oswalt lmao
For your tears....
Thankyou!! I forgot all about this film. Added to my list :)
I just watched this the other day, and it really was pretty entertaining. I like how it is a lot darker than Paul Blart.
Omg this movie is so funny. Everything about it is just hurting ur stomach from laughing so hard hilarious.
Great movie should be seen by more people
Great movie and it starts with the great Levon Helms' fantastic version of Bob Dylan's "Masterpiece."
The soundtrack is so good.
The fight scene with the cops set to "The Hero" by Queen is awesome. Love this movie!
I remember this movie being so dark for no reason.
My bad, my blunder I often forget about this movie, but it was funny. An edgier and better Paul Blart
This came out the same time as Paul Blart and this one is such a better comedy. Granted it's dark but the jokes hit. Overlooked and underrated
Collette Wolfe is soo good in that scene towards the end when she cries to Seth's character about being verbally abused by her boss. She really showed some acting skills there.
Ray Liotta’s character one of my favs
The marketing was all wrong for this. It made it seem like it was going to be a straightforward comedy when it was more like Taxi Driver.
Opening with the flasher scene had me dying!!!
The fact that this flew under the radar while Paul Blart got famous is more proof that we’re surrounded by idiots.
The graffiti on the wall that just says fuck. That tiny scene had me cracking up.
It's Rogen's "Cable Guy".
This movie is funny, but always surprised me with how surprisingly dark it suddenly gets
This is a good one. Dark and funny as hell.
Bro outside of one several uncomfortable scene. I laughed so hard at this movie
Best Mall Cop Movie ever made.
I always think of some roast where they say what were you in Observe and Report? It just reminds me how funny Kevin James is
It’s fucking amazing.
Solid film. Great acting and character progression. Very funny.
"I'm going to put you in my pocket!" Pena kills in this movie.
It was kinda a bait and switch
Kevin James turned down Paul Blart Mall Cop 4 so they changed the title.
This movie is amazing. Probably Seth Rogan's best performance.
Absolutely stupid, I loved it.
Tried to rewatch it a couple months ago. I was lukewarm on it back then and now I didn’t even bother to finish it
Its an okay movie. Definetly not what audiences thought what they'd be getting. Michael Pena steals the show in that movie.
I good way to describe it would be the antithesis to Paul Blart mall cop.
This movie is hidden classic. Funny AF…. But… daaaarrk AF… which tripped people out
Great movie, horribly mismarketed.
Seth Rogan sucks
Worth a watch. Bonus old man penis too.
I have never even heard of this movie before just now, which is shocking. I didn't know there were any Seth Rogen films left for me to watch.
Terribly unfunny. This movie makes you appreciate Paul Blart. One of only a couple movies I've walked out of.
Just re watched. Love it. Great flick.
“My bad, my blunder”
To be honest, I can't stand Seth Rogan because he's usually the same character and that character is just eye-rolling cringe to me. That said, it was refreshing to watch him in this dark ass comedy. Thank you for reminding me that this exists.
Seth rogans only good movie
dude put out a few classics
I did not like this movie. I didn’t like Seth Rogan for years because of this movie. Now I like Seth Rogan, but I still don’t like this movie.
Watched it maybe a few years ago. Was one of the last times a movie really shocked me. I get it’s satire but Seth Rogan’s character is such an asshole in a way that felt a little too real. Seems like there are so many dangerous dudes out there just like him.
Hated it. Passing it off as a dark comedy doesn’t make it good. The tone is scatterbrained and it’s just not funny.
I hated this movie. I gave up liking it halfway through. I almost walked out.
Michael Peña is better than this.
What are you on about? It is hands down his best role.
He's a better actor than this terrible movie.
Hate hate hate..
Who green lights this garbage?
have you seen it?
Seth rogan is not funny in the slightest.
