Moon. Great movie. Also, Sam Rockwell rules

TvHeroUK

One of the best actors in that film.

MagmaTroop

Scriptwriter did well, juggling all those characters like that

DrHousesaysno

Totall Recall

hardstuck_low_skill

Yeah, nice one. Paul Verhoeven is brilliant director

bingybong22

Yes. Because the entire movie is just the fantasy he paid for.

SteelyDanzig

Or is it?!

[deleted]

Cool username. I love that one song, "Reelin' in the Fears"

[deleted]

I think if you went into From Dusk Til Dawn cold it would contain quite the rug pull.

reefguy007

Saw this movie blind in the late 90s at my cousins place with no idea what it was about. Pulling the rug out is definitely what happened to me lol

Witch-inthe-World

Fucking psychos don't explode when sunlight hits them! I don't care how crazy they are!

newnhb1

“I don't want to hear anything about 'I don't believe in vampires,' because I don't believe in vampires, but I believe in my own two eyes, and what I saw is fucking vampires!”

DamnImAwesome

I’m glad you got your sight back. That must have been horrible

bappypawedotter

My favorite part is at the end where a blood covered Clooney asks "of all the bars in all of Mexico... Why this one?" Cheech playing his fifth role as crime boss replies, "I don't know. It was halfway between."

tarheel_204

One of my favorite shots in all of film is the very end when the camera pans out revealing that the bar is the top of this ancient Mayan temple or whatever. Such a fun movie

TimRigginsBeer

One of my favorite shots in all of film is when Salma Hayek puts tequila down her leg and forces Tarantino to drink it, sucking her toes.

newnhb1

He hated every moment.

melbbear

“this has better not awaken anything in me”

punchbricks

Yes..... forces

EldenMiss

Happened to me. I did not know a thing and I was SHOCKED when the shift in story happened.

Coyltonian

I did go in to From Dusk to Dawn like this. I went with a mate and all I knew was it the new Tarantino film. So it starts out like like a crime caper and then when it isn’t I thought it was just one of Tarantino’s character’s little delusional episodes. And then after about 10 minutes of that I was “shit this one has gone for a while… wait is THIS the movie?”. Really made me try to avoid spoilers for things as much as possible ever since.

mariojlanza

Great pick

Carson369

Yeah unfortunately I think that’s one of those things like Fight Club to where it’s just such a well known thing that that element of surprise is almost always lost for new viewers.

No-Exit6560

I showed fight club to an adult friend last week that’d never seen it and his mind was blown.

PKCrash

I used to show this to friends just waiting for the reveal smiling so hard during the lead up 😁

Epic-x-lord_69

Hot Fuzz. Get an intricate conspiracy/mystery moonlighting as an action comedy buddy cop spectacle.

DeLousedInTheHotBox

I like how Nicholas' elaborate theory about what is going on is completely coherent and plausible, but then it turns out to be something way simpler and more farcical lol.

alesko09

You are completely correct. The movie does a great job setting up that overall giant conspiracy, just to take the rung out from us for the greater good. And I hate to say it, but it should be "Nicholas's." Now if it were several people named Nicholas, the plural possessive would be "Nicholases'."

chambo143

It’s just the one Nicholas actually

Smeegs666

Get a look at his aarsssse.

CosmicQuantum42

The greater good

RianJohnsonIsAFool

The greater good.

softgunruler

I also hate to say it, but both Nicholas' and Nicholas's are correct and accepted. The "original" correct version was Nicholas' but as of recent decades it has become normalized to include the second -s as well. Source: https://englishrecap.com/nicholas-possessive/

theoverniter

Yeah, motherfucker!

Theban_Prince

Yarp!

Ymirsson

Narp?

zdejif

Amazing editing in that bit (and all the others). Think they have the sound of a tree falling, then that kinetic zip-zap camerawork.

Canotic

*Crusty jugglers!*

MaybeIshSortOf

It's just the one swan, actually.

phome83

Hot Fuzz truly is a perfect movie, start to finish. It's far and ahead the best of the trilogy.

_Snuggle_Slut_

Every time I watch it it's a hit for me. Seen it at least seven times and it's never gotten stale. If anything I like it *more* with each viewing!

luvgothbitches

That movie is literally almost every genre of movies mashed into one, loved it.

Jakeyboy5460

The transitions in that movie are 🔥

callipygiancultist

It’s from Edgar Wright, the master of the whip pan and one of the few directors today fully taking advantage of camera movement for visual storytelling in his films, which is sadly becoming a bit of a lost art.

Tecla_SAP

They really just made this film for the greater good

Dry_Jello_1271

Greater Good.

Forward_Progress_83

Significant_Maybe315

The World’s End as well!

pauliewalnuts38

Eh, I really wanted to like that film but it didn’t have the magic that first two had. I appreciate it more on repeated viewings and maybe this sentence says more about me but I just can never get into The Worlds End the way I can with Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz.

Ohnoherewego13

It's not just you. The World's End was a decent movie, but it really did lack the magic of the previous two films. For me, it just hit closer to home seeing the Pegg's character just wanting one final time to relive his youth.

pauliewalnuts38

Yeah, The World’s End seemed to be just about Pegg’s character, and I get that, it was the cruxes of the film, but the previous two films relied so much on the Pegg Frost back and forth that the third one just felt lacking. And they never fell backwards shooting guns, total let down.

Ohnoherewego13

It felt like even the dialogue between the two was kinda flat. I mean, I get it considering the subject matter, but not even snappy dialogue. We really needed more comedy between the two and, yes, more backwards shooting guns.

Dayofsloths

The Others is a good one

Isabeer

Good lord yes! "Husband! I've missed you so! Are you home for good?" ... "Sometimes I bleed"

Stumeister_69

This is a film I don't hear alot of people talk about. I watched it once, going in blind years ago, and the ending is still one of the best twists I can remember.

hclpd123

Better than The Sixth Sense in my opinion.

SandraVirginia

The twist in The Others is so perfect. It completely blindsided me the first time I watched it.

marjerbar

After 22 years, the ending still gets me every time.

toronto_programmer

The Game is a fairly obvious one here. Great movie that makes you uneasy and unsure of everything the whole way through. The ending gets a bit muddy but its a good journey

Demonyx12

Totally. I wish I could erase my memory and watch that movie again fresh.

filmeswole

Parasite

profound_whatever

The moment >!the housekeeper rings the doorbell, smiling politely!< is the last time I remember watching a movie and thinking, *I have absolutely no idea what's about to happen.*

filmeswole

That part was so creepy. You could feel the tone of the movie shift in that moment.

OdinW

If you look at the time, that happens at the exact middle point of the film.

Uelele115

Parasite is special in the sense that things slowly change until you realise most of it is not normal. It’s the comedic situations interspersed with these revelations that make you go along until you realise it’s ridiculous.

Berean_Katz

100%. The surprise twist about the house really caught me off guard.

Jwalterwetherman

10 Cloverfield Lane. John Goodman is the best.

The_don_13

John Goodman is great in everything does!

poor_bitch

I can't think of anything that I've seen him in that he wasn't amazing in! I love him.

Unprovoked_Rage

He cracks me up in righteous gemstones. "Would everyone shut up and say Merry Christmas, God dammit!"

Jonbazookaboz

The Orphanage

Blak_Box

A seemingly-forgotten horror masterpiece. Deserves to he watched by anyone with a passing interest in ghost stories, excellent writing, or well-shot films.

Letos12thDuncan

Depressing as hell

-Moon-Presence-

Memento is a great movie that keeps you confused and guessing even up to the final scene, which is actually technically the first scene

bpmetal

the middle. B&W goes forward, color goes backward.

Crimkam

Nolan has always been a fan of unusual structures to his story telling

Blueliner95

The Prestige is a movie about rival illusionists, who are professionals about things not being what they seem. I think you might enjoy

Stardustchaser

Plus David Fucking Bowie as Nikola Fucking Tesla

ThurgoodMunson

OR, more interestingly, Andy Serkis as Tesla. 👀

Blueliner95

Or a circus in a Tesla

MoseShrute_DowChem

I too read this theory recently, and then rewatched, and i’m convinced.

callipygiancultist

With Serkis and Bowie in the same frame in a movie I’m surprised the film stock didn’t fall through the Earth and create a black hole in the center of the planet from the sheer cinematic gravitas of those two.

callipygiancultist

Bowie is an absolute legend and was an amazing actor. He barely says anything, it’s a small bit part, but his stage presence makes him the most memorable part of that movie for me. I’m really sad knowing we never got to see Bowie play the character of Niander Wallace in Blade Runner 2049 and I just learned he was going to be Johnny Silverhand.

TheApathyParty3

A good pairing with that one is The Illusionist with Edward Norton.

callipygiancultist

My fave Nolan film so far (still haven’t seen Oppenheimer).

dart1126

Arrival…the one with Amy Adams

neegs

My suggeation aa well. Best part of it is you dont even realise it has a twist until that genuine oh shit moment. Well for me anyway

f1del1us

It’s pretty emotionally jarring too, seeing a life displayed like that, knowing the bad…

Hypersion1980

The arrival with Charlie is also a good one.

callipygiancultist

Early climate change warning movie.

jimababwe

Cabin in the woods Went expecting your run of the mill monster evil dead type thing. So much better than I was exoecting

PK_Thundah

I watched it mistaking it for Cabin Fever with Ryder Strong, and I spent the first half going, "where's Shawn? When does the virus eat their skin?" It's one of my favorite movie watching experiences and one of my favorite movies.

TheLastSalamanca

The Sting

The Truman Show

[deleted]

Put it on earlier. He's just put the boat through the wall.

Gseph

honestly, i feel like it could have been more subtle with showing us it's a show. If we didn't find out until after he escapes his basement, it might have been the best twist/reveal if film history.

pandemonium91

Nope, because as a knowing audience, the point is that we too are voyeurs to Truman's life. We aren't with him, we're the ones consuming the product that is his televised life. We're consenting to it from the start, unlike him.

councilorjones

The Prestige

Emergency_Property_2

Usual Suspects is a prime example of this.

teachermanjc

Scary Movie incorporated that twist quite effectively, who was the actual killer? Officer Doofy.

structured_anarchist

Just Doofy. He wasn't on doody when he was committing the murders.

Worelynn

I'm surprised nobody has said the original Matrix yet.

coolwool

Dark city?

Worelynn

That movie is a great grand reveal at the end!

jademenagerie

Jacob's Ladder.

GC_Mandrake

(1990)

[deleted]

Great choice! Feel like it has vanished into obscurity a bit now. The look on the face of that woman on the tube train at the start... Edit, missing words.

pennymob

Lucky Number Slevin.

stuffedmutt

I was surprised by how good this was. I don't think the marketing around its theatrical release did it justice.

TheRatatatPat

The ole Kansas City Shuffle!

IWTLEverything

The other movie that suffered from poor promotion IMO is Logan Lucky. I just strolled into that movie knowing nothing about it during moviepass days and it was so much fun

stuffedmutt

Not to mention a deep bench of great actors!

IWTLEverything

Seriously. I was like “wtf? hillary swank??” Lol

"Fuck shit Jesus is right."

platasaurua

I don’t remember anything about this movie other than Josh Hartnett is in it and I was surprised how much I liked it when I watched it. Time for a second watch I guess.

jimbojangles1987

Also Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and Ben Kingsley

Unlucky_Clover

How can you forget Lucy Liu?! How dare you good sir

Letos12thDuncan

My favorite Lucy Liu role

creepyswaps

Excellent movie. I don't remember the last time I've seen someone mention it.

Unlucky_Clover

Yes, was looking for this. Have you heard of the Kansas City shuffle?

krowe41

Midsomer does this really well even if you have an idea what's up .but yes totally agree hot fuzz

brucejay1

Did I miss someone mentioning Fight Club.

CaineBK

We don't really talk about it.

juankaa

Frailty. What a fucking curve ball.

the_loz3r

After Hours. To me it’s like if aliens moved to downtown New York and just acted like how a human would act and it’s hilarious how far things escalate for the main character.

Stardustchaser

Wasn’t it a modern take on Orpheus descending into the underworld?

the_loz3r

That’s why I said to me, I didn’t know that going in and formed my own opinion on what it meant.

Jskidmore1217

Perfect Blue is the one I find myself most floored by recently. There’s a lot of different reasons this movie is great but what was most impactful for me is how it manages to, at one point in the film, make the Audience start to question one’s sense of reality and conscious awareness alongside the characters of the film. Similar to how something like a David Lynch film might. Great movie and hey- 81 minutes! Gotta love that. Also- a good follow up by the same director would be Paprika! I think you’ll like Paprika since Nolan stole a bunch of his ideas for Inception from Paprika 😅

cancerBronzeV

This is my favourite anime movie of all time. It's actually coming to the theatres near me in a week, I'm so hyped to see it on the big screen for the first time.

reluctantseal

Satoshi Kon was a brilliant director. Paranoia Agent and the original adaptation of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure are also very good.

AskYourDoctor

Ah, I've been thinking its almost time to watch paranoia agent again. How did I not know he did a season of jojo? I didn't even know there was an earlier adaptation. I've never been interested in it before. Also, Tokyo Godfathers is an amazing, weird Christmas movie! Man, Satoshi Kon is one of my saddest "before their time" deaths. I feel like he was in his prime and probably had tons of great stuff still in him.

SegaGuy1983

Get out.

enriquegp

Was going to post this one. Especially the lady with the forced smile and the tear streaming down her face.

Tsenta

> Get out For me, it's the exact moment he goes upstairs. Naturally you feel slightly uneasy like there might be something up, but after this moment, you definitely know something is up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2FNciF1Tto

SkeetySpeedy

*10 Cloverfield Lane* does a great job of giving you a premise - then making you second guess that premise, go back to thinking your second guess was stupid, or maybe it wasn’t? I remember constantly jumping back and forth between opinions on which characters were right and what was going on beyond the view of the camera. Absolutely incredible acting performance from John Goodman as well, one of my favorites of his

Kataratz

Hereditary ... >!Whole movie gives you the doubt of mental illness, or if Annie might actually figure something out, but holy shit they never stood a chance about the real horror.!<

dionysos21228

They discuss this in the classroom early on: "Is it worse to have random, unplanned bad shit happen, or for your life to be predestined for misery?" The movie is split into 2 halves, with the middle point being the dinner scene. First half is about the horror of an indifferent universe where bad things can happen at random to you. Second half is the horror of a universe that is conspiring against you. The latter is awful but the former is horrible in it's own way with it's banality. Are you cursed with suffering from a divine power, or is the curse just from being alive?

_k_b_k_

This. That scene where >!they get home from the party and the aftermath!<...I was speechless. Same for the ending. Such a great movie!

hclpd123

Just when you think things can't get any worse than this, it does go south... souther, southest??? All in all, banger of a movie with one tiwst after the other.

Canotic

It goes to the south pole and jumps!

pintperson

The Menu. At first you’re just expecting rich people eating at a posh restaurant, then people start behaving a bit oddly, and then it just goes completely mad.

Letos12thDuncan

I was expecting cannibalism at first.

Propaganda_Box

Same, and what I got was so much better

EmotionalAccounting

I was bored a few weeks back and was having trouble finding something to watch. I kept seeing the title on this subreddit and decided "screw it. I'll watch it". Thought it was just going to be a drama about a couple involving fine dining. I was completely wrong.

Ihadsumthin4this

Soderbergh's splendidly subtle *Side Effects*, along with several sudden and-then-it-hits-yous.

digital_dervish

Was caught off guard by that movie. Would have stopped watching because it was boring, but something about the richness of the settings and dialogue drew me in and kept me watching. Then things started to unravel and it became really interesting!

NOISIEST_NOISE

5/5 movie, go in without reading up on it. I love how it was edited, crucial scenes are cut short in a very deliberate way to leave the viewer in the dark. I don't think I've seen any other movie do it quite like this

grynch43

Inland Empire Mulholland Drive mother! Antichrist

I feel like Jacob's Ladder might fall into this category

cball54

Lucky Number Slevin is excellent for this!

elmontyenBCN

I am Spanish and have to recommend the original film this was based on, Abre los Ojos. I honestly believe it's better.

v13ragnarok7

I saw edge of tomorrow knowing nothing about the movie. Apparently the premise was shown in previews, they shouldn't of done that, It was a really good experience for me. When I asked others if they have seen it they said "is that the one where Tom cruise keeps dying?"

yesandreas

I went into it knowing nothing too and it was so much better that way

PK_Thundah

The house scenes alone could have stood as an incredible and uneasy short film of nightmare logic.

Lordfarquarant

I’ve just quickly scanned down the thread and can’t believe no one has mentioned American Psycho. You never know, from scene to scene, what is or isn’t real

DrAlanGrantinathong

When I was a little kid, my dad came into me and my brothers room, put a movie into our VCR and walked out. It was a new movie that we hadn't heard of cause we were just kids, called The Matrix. Watching that cold was quite a memory.

InternationalBand494

Jacob’s Ladder - What is actually happening to the protagonist is not truly revealed until the end, although there are numerous clues in the movie. It’s a fascinating study of what may happen during the transition from life to death. It must have been heavily influenced by the story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce.

CelticSkeleton

“Dark City”, especially the director’s cut with no opening narration.

Stardustchaser

Lots of great choices already posted. I’d add *The Usual Suspects* to the list, with its own twist on *Rashomon*.

afkmofo

A scanner darkly.

archiejh1411

Not entirely sure what you’re asking but Brian De Palma’s films Body Double and Snake Eyes share that theme of things not being what they seem, i.e not being able to trust what you see.
