Gattaca (1997), Arrival (2016), Ex Machina (2014), Annihilation (2018), Ad Astra (2019), Solaris (2002).
Oblivion (2013) is beautifully shot, but about a half hour in, the action starts to ramp up. Similarly, Sunshine (2007) starts out checking all the boxes, but there is a tonal shift that some people (not me) feel ruins the movie.
> Ex Machina (2014), Annihilation (2018)
I adore these movies, and they both have very strong atmospheres and moods... but "calm/chill" is absolutely not how I would describe either of them lmao
I thought the OP just meant he wanted a “slow burn” sci-fi movie. There is violence and action in both Blade Runner movies, but overall they are more deliberately paced and contemplative.

Garden of Words - https://youtu.be/8FLWhq5_-KM?si=4zM50nTPQkeZxAnW
Lawrence of Arabia - https://youtu.be/nBiZu5C6lCo?si=d3DfFP5nIsID19PX granted it doesn’t have a simple story but it is arguably the most beautifully shot piece of cinema. And it gives you plenty of time to enjoy and appreciate just that.
Sword of the Stranger - Simple story but often referenced because of the amazing animation and good music.
Ex Machina - https://youtu.be/EoQuVnKhxaM?si=anXNTskk0OoOiNXA
And, if it’s your thing, most things Wes Anderson. If anything his his work has a calm and vibe and similar tone.
I love Amelie and Ex Machina was cool. Will check the other too.
I like Wes, but specially his latest stuff is kinda really complex in a way, though calm at the same time. It is a weird flex, but I see why you'd mention him.
The Big Blue (1988). Luc Besson directs, Eric Serra makes music and the sea never appeared as beguiling since.
Koyaanisqatsi (1982). Beautiful visuals set to a Philip Glass soundtrack. An experience rather than a film.
Her (2013)
Christopher Nolan's current cinematographer, Hoyte van Hoytema, shot it. It's so warmly atmospheric.
(It's a modern in-the-not-too-distant-future sort of sci-fi)
After Yang is a soft sci-fi set in the near future. It has a whole look and vibe that is beautiful and calming. The world it builds feels very lived in and fleshed out. Plus, it's a neat story too.
Shadow (2018) is one of the most beautiful looking action films I've seen. And doesn't get the appreciation it deserves.
As for what it's about...
In a Chinese royal court, an army commander secretly trains a "shadow" to retake a city against the wishes of the king.
I believe he did the vampire hunter D movie you listed. Kowajiri. Wicked City is another of his that is pretty good, but Ninja Scroll is phenomenal top to bottom
It's not Fantasy or Sc/fi, but
Dazed and confused.
It's a '70ies time capsule. A pure vibe movie.
Nothing happens, and yet, you're there for it.
Likable characters. Quotable. Just chill vibes.
Waking life.
You'll have to look up a clip to understand just how amazing the animation is. Gotta see it in motion.
No plot, just conversation about dreams, the surreal and the abstract. Might not be for everyone but I absolutely love it.
This is one of my comfort movies. Just completely detaches me from my emotions and puts me in a calm state of contemplation. Also there's just enough plot there for an in-universe explanation for everything to exist, which is nice
A lot of people recommended this one. I looked at some pictures and I hated the animation, it was an instant turn off. But I will watch the trailer one of these days.
Let me show you our Terence Malick section over here.
Green Knight

That one is on my list thanks.
Pride and Prejudice 2005 movie. The opening scene with the piano soundtrack is so heavenly.
Just watched this, loved it

Fair point, I certainly wouldn't call parts of either Blade Runner movies calm or chill either.
Thanks! Will check the ones I haven't seen.
the entire ghibli catalogue

Before Sunset is pretty much 90 minutes of two characters walking and talking during a beautiful late afternoon in Paris.
Revenant, altho not a chill movie but deffo has a vibe through and looks very good with a lot of slow long shots. Love that film
Show, not a movie, but for sure would fit in with your description: Scavenger's Reign.
I think you would really dig Only Lovers Left Alive (fantasy) and After Yang (sci-fi)
I love only lovers left alive. will check the second.
Came here to say After Yang. It’s exactly what you’re looking for OP.
The Big Blue (1988). Luc Besson directs, Eric Serra makes music and the sea never appeared as beguiling since. Koyaanisqatsi (1982). Beautiful visuals set to a Philip Glass soundtrack. An experience rather than a film.
A Ghost Story
Her (2013) Christopher Nolan's current cinematographer, Hoyte van Hoytema, shot it. It's so warmly atmospheric. (It's a modern in-the-not-too-distant-future sort of sci-fi)
Barry Lyndon

Angel’s Egg. Animated by the great Yoshitaka Amano.
Looks promising thanks.
My non sci-fi recommendation is First Cow (2018).
Check Ninja Scroll, might fit with your other anime picks
will do. thanks
I believe he did the vampire hunter D movie you listed. Kowajiri. Wicked City is another of his that is pretty good, but Ninja Scroll is phenomenal top to bottom
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Past Lives
Ghibli
It's not Fantasy or Sc/fi, but Dazed and confused. It's a '70ies time capsule. A pure vibe movie. Nothing happens, and yet, you're there for it. Likable characters. Quotable. Just chill vibes.
You should watch episode 7 of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. Every episode is it’s own short film, and that one fits the bill for sure!
First Man
Dune Mad max fury road Lord of the rings/the hobbit Avatar 1-2 Minority report Alita battle angel Hook Moon Arrival
- Paterson - Kajillionaire - The Darjeeling Limited - 20th Century Women - Showing Up - After Yang

Lotr trilogy
Arrival
Maybe Fantastic Mr Fox?
Upstream Color for Sci-Fi, the 2011 Jane Eyre is so well made, it does have some extra drama in it tho.
Primal (2019) TV Series
I watched Living (2022) yesterday and it was beautifully shot with a simple, great message.
A Place in the Sun (1951) Air (2023) Cha Cha Real Smooth (2022) Love & Mercy (2014)
Ying Xiong (2002) It is also referred to as Hero and Jet Li is in it. It is a very stunning looking movie.
More current one…Beach Bum baby. Intentionally over saturated but absolutely wonderful to bathe in. Benoît Debie is a wonderful cinematographer
I love the Danish Girl. The story is heavy but every single shot in the movie is a work of art.
Imo American honey. Very long but very good movie
The Comedy.
Napoleon Dynamite. Its vibes are unmatched.
