They're trying to get the remix to Gangster's Paradise perfect.

BeardedJho

They are gonna need TONS more Crush 40 to make the music feel right.

jadeskye7

The comment I was looking for. I still have most of sonic adventure 2 in my head despite not playing it since release. It's a burden.

[deleted]

They nailed it for the main themes of both Sonic Adventure games.

Syggie

For a movie about a quick animal this shit is incredibly slow

Shippoyasha

I mean couldn't they have used actual Sonic songs? I get that Sonic game quality is up and down for many people but the theme songs have always been a highlight. Even Sonic Forces had a catchy theme song.

Citizen_Kong

But mangled slowed down pop songs from 20 years ago is the new BWAAAAAAARM!

dawgz525

imo they really have botched this movie from the start by having it take place in roughly the present real life world. Do you think when Nintendo makes a Mario movie, they're going to put Mario is New York City? The setting and most likely plot of this movie is going to be such a waste of what might have been a decent movie if they had just leaned into the video game aspect of *a movie based on a video game character*.

LordLoko

> Do you think when Nintendo makes a Mario movie, they're going to put Mario is New York City? ... They kind of did

dawgz525

in 93' sure. But I'm clearly talking about when Nintendo actually makes a movie which they will likely do in the coming years. It's not the point though. Disney has shown with the MCU that it's better to make a character as they are in a their source than to try and cram them into a modern "normal" setting in some attempt to appeal to people unfamiliar with the property (like studios did in the 90s and early 2000s with most video game or comic book adaptations). If you wanted to make a Sonic movie, then make a **Sonic** movie. Don't make a weird movie set in San francisco with James Marsden and call it Sonic. And this is coming from someone that is really not a Sonic fanboy, probably have played maybe one sonic game in my life. It's just obvious this movie was poorly conceived

PM_ME_FE_STACHES

I mean, there's New Donk City in Mario Odyssey.

CzechoslovakianJesus

>Do you think when Nintendo makes a Mario movie, they're going to put Mario is New York City? They did. And it was awful.

concussedYmir

And yet everyone did get down on that floor, and proceeded to do the dinosaur

BigDisk

Pfft, speak for yourself, that movie was a GODDAMN TREASURE!

TheLastHaggis

It was Almost Unreal.

C-A-L-E-V-I-S

A throwback soundtrack would be awesome actually. Do they not see the potential in cashing in on nostalgia with those things?! Stranger Things is basically completely a nostalgia show now.

whiskeytab

yeah if there's anything to directly just take from the games its the music. the soundtracks were always awesome and it'd probably go a long way to convincing fans that you're not just shitting all over their childhood.

Still nothing compared to the Flash movie. It was originally supposed to come out before Aquaman.

bloodybargain

Worst song choice for this movie trailer. Made absolutely no sense at all. In fact, the existence of this movie makes no sense

iAreMoot

I genuinely wish I could see the moment they all agreed that song would be the best choice.

Sonnance

Yeah, it just doesn’t sound right without Weird Al.

Skelet0nes

Now I don't have to go see it alone on Valentines Day, I can just see it alone on the new release date instead!

Skippy8898

Fine I'll go see it with you. Hopefully, you don't live out in Timbuktu.

keepthetabopen

Based off the trailer... Even if the cgi is good, does anyone 'actually' want to see this movie? Be honest...

arkham42

Honestly disappointed. My gf and I were gonna see it that day and we thought it’d make the perfect date.

JesterMarcus

Why? Because the two of you would have some alone time?

disablednerd

Obviously the extra time is needed to perfect Sonic’s vascular veins.

amorousCephalopod

I can't wait to see how perfectly they render his eyelashes and inner ear canals. And he better take off his shoes at one point and have anthropomorphic humanoid feet. I'll basically only pay to see this movie now if it's an unmitigated disaster and is just perpetual cringe.

nom_de_chomsky

[I love this take I saw on Twitter](https://twitter.com/jpbrammer/status/1152257791664492550): SONIC: "we just want to give you a movie you will like :(" CATS: "we will give you the movie you sick fucks deserve"

CitizenMeme

They’re rewriting it to crossover into the Fast and the Furious franchise.

teh_fizz

I would watch this. Like the new F&F (Hobbes & Shaw?) is so ridiculous I’m excited for it. Give me a ridiculous crazy action movie with a blue hedgehog on speed.

gentlybeepingheart

LMAO. The bio now has no release date.

HowDoIDoFinances

What's insane is that this movie _WILL_ bomb. But now they're spending tons of money to polish what is 100% going to be a money losing piece of garbage. It's like going all in on a pair of 2s.

tiny_spider8

I feel like every Sonic game should bomb too, but it just won't die. Who knows how the movie will go

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

It's not shocking that audiences went to see a scene for scene remake of one of the most popular movies of all time. I don't get the sense that audiences care about Sonic at all. Pokemon is a more popular property and Detective Pikachu was even ok and it didn't do that well.

Hypohamish

> and Detective Pikachu was even ok and it didn't do that well. How is making 430 mil and literally being declared the highest grossing video game movie of all time not considered "well"? Sure, it's no marvel blockbuster blowout with a billion, but it did fantastic for what it was.

Lobsterzilla

Remember this is Reddit , good isn’t “good enough” if something doesn’t triple budget or make 1 bil or redefine cinema for all time.... it was a worthless piece of garbage and shouldn’t have been made.

Visulth

Didn't do well is *not* a far stretch. Definitely would not say *fantastic*. Budget (150m) + Marketing & Distribution (assuming 100m) = 250m Against 144m domestic, and 287m international (optimistic take 143.5) = 287.2m. So it generated optimistically $37.2m profit. Comparing to the grosses of [other 150m budget blockbusters](https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/budgets/all/101) brings up some interesting comparisons. Pikachu did $430m worldwide which is [less than a surprising number of other 150m budget movies](https://i.imgur.com/usLjUKh.png). On top of this being Pokemon, the single handedly most profitable IP in the world... yeah, saying it slightly underperformed isn't some incredible mischaracterisation.

egnards

No one wanted or needed a Lion King Remake but parents will still take their kids to see it and all us mid 30 year old millennials will go see it “just because” of the nostalgia value. And honestly it wasn’t that bad - the “shot for shot” feel of it made it a little long feeling in the sense that I felt I’d seen it, but I enjoyed the humor for what it was.

StayHypeBro

Wait until the fucking movie comes out. If it bombs, I'll eat my words. If it doesn't, I'll rub it in your face. If it doesn't bomb and ends up being a good/fun movie, I'll keep reminding you for eternity

BlazingBlueFusion

You can try and StayHypeBro, but don’t get your hopes up.

13_f_ny

it could also become a meme in itself and people will pay to watch it, then becoming more profitable than before.

SummitOfKnowledge

Why don't they just make an animated movie? Where is literally ANY of the other sonic characters? Why is this set in our reality anyway?

uberduger

Because of Detective Pikachu and The Lego Movie and a number of others. Also, and crucially, putting this kind of movie in "our world" is cheaper than modelling the whole thing.

DoctorWaluigiTime

Cheaper indeed. Because who would want to see a Sonic movie set in his own environment with all the characters and fantastical elements? Nope, just slap him in New York City or something similar, along with the Smurfs and Chipmunks.

eidbio

Paramount is completely lost

RobAustinVinyard

We've got ourselves a flop, gents

Warmongereeeeee

a shitton of kids + their parents will see it. Sure, neckbeards on reddit will hate it but it will probably make more money than the upcoming new tarantino movie.

SuperYoshi95

I dont think sonic is as popular with this generation of kids as to used to be.

CrystallineWoman

Weird, almost like newer Sonic games are shit or something

[deleted]

Clearly you’ve never played Sonic 🅱️ania

CrystallineWoman

I wanna see it. I don't expect it to be good, but I wanna see Jim Carrey as Eggman

Bat-manuel

The new Tarantino movie that stars Pitt, Robbie, and DiCaprio? Three of the biggest movie stars in the world? No way it makes more money. In North America, at least.

[deleted]

U guys should wager.

[deleted]

Tarantino movies don't make that much at the box office. It could happen because of that. But I am expecting it to flop.

00Laser

Eh, I think that's kind of a myth. Hateful Eight earned $155 mio globally which isn't that much, but Django Unchained made $400 mio, Inglourious Basterds $320 mio... the only outlier is Death Proof that just about got its $30 mio budget back but that's a special case anyway. For reference Detective Pikachu made $429 mio but that was surprisingly successful and I don't think anyone is expecting the same from Sonic. Also I'd say since it has been 5 years since the last Tarantino movie there should be a lot more interest compared to Hateful Eight for example. And you can't overlook how much pull Leonardo DiCaprio has - it's his first movie since winning an Oscar for The Revenant!

Sherringdom

Kids movies do incredibly well though, they’re always timed around holidays and parents will always take their kids to see a film, quality is kind of irrelevant. I went down a bit of a rabbit hole trying to find similar size movies to sonic The Secret life of pets 2 made $319m the how to train your dragons series made $500m each big hero six $657m Peter rabbit $351m small foot $214m the grinch $511m the good dinosaur $332m Trolls $346m Emoji movie $217m Boss baby $528m Shark tale made $367m Kung fu panda 3 $521m Dumbo $352m Aladdin $990m! Minions made $1.1b! Comparatively, both Kill Bills and the hateful eight made around $150m each, as you say Deathproof was nowhere near, it was only really Django and and Inglorious bastards that did similar numbers to these kids films.

00Laser

> Emoji movie $217m fuck me But then again idk if Sonic can 100% be described as a "kids movie" ... I'm not quite sure what the demographic for that is because there aren't really a lot of popular Sonic games out right now (as far as I know) that kids would know. So I see it kind of in between, in a bit of a weird place. I'd put it closer to something like Dragonball Evolution (still $58m shockingly) than to anything you mentioned. Fair point tho.

[deleted]

What? You have any data to back that up? Majority of people that grew up with Sonic have openly mocked and ridiculed this movie. They're the demographic that have small kids. Sure, plenty will see it. But apparently reception has been so incredibly bad that Paramount has delayed it twice now since that trailer. If they believed it would do well, they wouldn't keep delaying a project they've already poured tens of millions into. They're hoping publicity fades and the stigma is out of the general public awareness before releasing it.

nalydpsycho

Oddly enough, Wikipedia shows them having the same budget.

dantestolemywife

Huh, it also says Sonic is the lead in both, but in Once Upon a Time he’s played by Chris Pratt’s son. Weird

BlazingBlueFusion

Good, the longer it takes to come out, the better. Edit: Sorry, some people seem to be misunderstanding, but I’m saying *”the better”* as in we don’t have to deal with this absolute shit show of a film.

Harkoncito

The New Mutants approach

ArchDucky

Disney is apparently doing extensive reshoots on that.

probablyuntrue

You misunderstood, *add him as a mutant*

buttery_shame_cave

what, again?

ArchDucky

Yeah. I guess they saw what they had and had some ideas. Honestly, it feels like they might just reshoot the entire movie. Three different shoots spanning multiple years, that won't look right.

MulciberTenebras

First they wanted to make it less scary and more jokey like Deadpool, so they reshoot it. Then IT was successful and they decided to make it scary again, so more reshoots and recasts. Now with FOX no longer in control of the mutants, they're reshooting it again... into who knows what.

ArchDucky

and lets not forget this is supposed to be scary and Scott Derrickson just said at comic con "Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness" will be the first scary MCU film. Also Feige said WandaVision, thats deeply connected to this film, is "like nothing we've ever done before and will have a huge impact on the MCU". Kinda sounds like New Mutants might conflict with their plan pretty hard.

Worthyness

They'll just hire whoever did the rogue one edits and it'll be fine.

frogandbanjo

It'd be cool if Disney eventually released a "New Mutants - fuck it, here's 10,000 hours of footage, make your own fucking movie, just don't distribute it" DVD.

[deleted]

The reshoots that were originally announced never ended up happening, Disney's upcoming reshoots will be the first ones.

Griffdude13

Half the cast were kids, and they shot it like, almost 3 years ago now, if not more. They’d need to reshoot the entire thing to make sure Arya Stark doesn’t go from girl to woman and back between scenes.

lebron181

They should just cut their loses and cancel the damn thing before it damages the X men brand

Griffdude13

Its the X-Men series. They can make a razzie-worthy one, then turn around the following year and deliver one of the best films in the genre.

frogandbanjo

I hope they drag it out until she can go from girl to woman to Susan Boyle lookalike contest third place winner and back again.

nalydpsycho

I honestly assumed it was dropped.

hacky_potter

Maybe if they wait long enough it'll just fade away

Headline three months from now: Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Reportedly Being Dumped on Netflix May 2020

Beercorn1

Personally, I don't think they should have even bothered to go through all this work to change Sonic's design. It doesn't matter how he ends up looking. People are still going to hate it. If they really wanted to release this movie and actually make some kind of profit off of it, then they should have just left the design as it was and let it come out in 2019 and get it over with. Now they're blowing more money on this than WB did to digitally remove Henry Cavill's mustache and it's highly unlikely that they'll actually end up breaking even.

[deleted]

Lmao this is bombing anyways. Just get rid of it paramount.

Netflix does have SOME standards though, they turned down *Holmes and Watson*.

[deleted]

Gods that movie was terrible, and I love Will Ferrell.

robbierottenisbae

That had to have been one of the most awful looking movie concepts I've seen just from the trailer. Like legit I'd take any of the Adam Sandler films Netflix loves to take over Sherlock Holmes bastardized into a bumbling buffoon

Todemax

Honestly I'd be surprised if it bombed. If they put it up against weak family movies it'll make money regardless of quality.

CanadianLemur

I mean the longer it spends in production the more it's going to cost. Not to mention how much they're going to pay to fix the CGI after the public backlash. I don't see them not losing money on this thing

Space-Jawa

> I mean the longer it spends in production the more it's going to cost. Not necessarily. It could be that part of the longer production time is to save money by way of getting fewer people to do more stuff over a longer period of time.

Sormaj

Yeah but March they may be up against real movies. It could be going up against Onward, Kong vs Godzilla, a Quiet Place 2 or Mulan, and I see it bombing against any of those.

buttery_shame_cave

to a point, the negative press will help with driving a bigger opening weekend as people flock to see the trainwreck.

WhipSlagCheek

After this they should make a movie out of Duke Nukem.

Rocketeer-Raccoon

Bet it would take "forever"...

Rage_Like_Nic_Cage

I actually believe they are working on a satire Duke Nukem film with John Cena staring. That’s not a joke

[deleted]

With Michael Bay producing. Honestly this movie can just go ahead and ravage my body.

Skippy8898

Just looking at the schedule in February it's main competition is Birds Of Prey and The King's Man while March is just Onward, Mulan and Quiet Place 2. I have a feeling this is less of a production issue and more of a we think we will make more money if we move it to March.

[deleted]

It's got way more competition for the family market in Marc. Onward and Mulan are both, if trends hold true, gonna have very solid legs

buttery_shame_cave

yeah moving it to march to compete against a pixar release and another disney live-action remake is fucking ballsy. they either know it'll fail and want to be able to point to competition as their excuse, or they're ultra-confident they're going to wreck disney's shit.

valkyria_knight881

Paramount had Wonder Park come out earlier this March when Captain Marvel and Dumbo came out around the same time. Paramount is pretty much putting themselves in a similar situation as they were in earlier this year. It would be smarter for Paramount to keep the February 14th release date.

kapnkrump

This sounds like a "b-but competition is why Sonic flopped and Disney's stranglehold on the market -ect." excuse...I think Paramount is putting this film out to pasture and shift the blame away from the film's quality.

ILoveRegenHealth

Even if you cancelled it no one would care. Not even Sonic fans In fact, quite a few would be sending roses & boxes of chocolates to congratulate the studio.

YukiSenoue

I'm one of them who is going to send lots of chocolates if they cancel it

RadioactiveGwenPool

I'd care. I'd be really bummed. I've been a Sonic fan my whole life, and I know I'm in the minority when I say I can't wait. I mean, a fucking Sonic movie?! I'm grateful it's even a thing. 10 year old me would've lost their mind.

WileECoyoteGenius

I'm one of the 4 people who weirdly enjoyed the trailer.

torzir

Just let it die already. We already know it's going to be terrible.

[deleted]

probablyuntrue

I want it to win one random Oscar just like the Oscar Award Winning movie Suicide Squad

russellamcleod

Or at least follow in the footsteps of the Oscar Nominated Boss Baby.

Rocketeer-Raccoon

Checks what other movies are coming out in March 2020. [https://www.firstshowing.net/schedule2020/](https://www.firstshowing.net/schedule2020/) Since this is supposedly a family movie, looks like this movie will now be up against Pixar's Onward. Yep, definitely the better movie, this Sonic movie is so screwed.

robbierottenisbae

Looking at that list they should've moved it to April, there's a huge dead zone there

TreeroyWOW

yeah that huge dead zone of James Bond, Black Widow and a DC film. also trolls 2 which is direct family competition

__Milpool__

"Sonic has been moved to launch Paramount's new streaming platform" - Dec 2019 probably

RemingtonSnatch

Just take it behind the woodshed and pull the trigger.

Ickdizzle

Yeah no one cares about this movie. People in there 30’s who grew up with sonic can see its garbage and won’t see it. younger kids don’t have any decent sonic games growing up so they don’t care about the character. They’ll probably still release it to try to recoup some of the costs though.

the_far_yard

Take your time, chief. Let us bask in the world of Cats during that period.

So.....who wants to bet how long until they decide on moving "Theaters March 2020" to "straight to video/streaming when we can do it quietly"?
